CONDITION OF HOUSTON COLORED SCHOOLS
VOL. V.
As for the iniquity and unwhole lot of conditions that the lot of the residents of Houston that the unwritten law of Houston that colored residential sections are to be denied venues and appointments, and thus to assist amid such deplorable conditions, are responsible for the city's welfare and progress care a wilt about these people, consider that they can isolate, and segregate people, that but diseases and epidemics races? they may not care, now but before long they will see the error of their way, but, also! It may even in the South it is time to change the generally accepted opinion that the niggers"; for this may prove a booming city upon its entire citery, when men are forced to give up their work because of lack of employment and due to the failure of the community to provide decent and respectful and wholesome environments for all the residents. Do they care anyway? would not be far amiss nor overly. If Houston's Committee on Interracial Co-operation relief desires to set the virgin and sublime field to get better living conditions for the thousands of colored citizens of

BETHEL REVIVAL ADDS MANY TO CHURCH ROLL
Monster crowds are slightly attending the series of revivalial meetings held at the University of California, Andrews and Crosby street. Fourth ward, and many accessions have allowed the crowds to visit Rev. Alexander Wilbanks, Washington, D. C., superintendent of evangelism of the National Baptist Convention, and he stylish himself as in charge and he stylish himself as a "dwarf filibuster" and he seems to be in charge of the warstakes of his satanic mantle. The series will be conceived with Mr. B. Burdett and officials have extended a cordial invitation to sinners to hear his sermons and to listen to his sermons at Bebel.

HOWARD DEAN DEFENDS ACTION ANENT APPROPRIATION MATTER; FORCES ARRAYED IN BATTLE FRONT
(By the Associated Negro Press.)
Washington, D.C.—The tempest senate, is but a measurable slam compared with the tempest of H writing of a seemingly unoffensive of plain white paper to Senator pectely, thick and fast. The air explanations, denials, and repudiation administration of President Du of Howard University, have seized president's resignations; others, probably jealous because of the Sandhrien season, flamed into misleading statements concern Notwithstanding the fast that "All's well that ends, according to the Sandhrien has been terrific; and there will doubles be a large group of embittered senators in states before quiet is again restored.
Washington, D. C. — The tempest of Teapot Dome, United States senate, is but a measurable slant from this division of mankind, compared with the tempest of Howard University, caused by the writing of a seemingly unoffending note by Dean Miller, on a sheet of plain white paper to Senator Smorer. Events followed, unexpectedly, thick and fast. The air was charged and surcharged with explanations, denials, and repudiations. Some, unfriendly to the administration of President Durkee, a white man, at the head of Howard University, have seized the occasion to demand the president's resignation; others, unfriendly to Dean Miller, and probably jealous because of the tremendous success of the Negro movement, have blamed and misleading statements concerning just what happened.
Miller Explaina His Side.
Dean Miller explains his side of the question in an extended statement sent to the committee of the course of which he has declared: "I am serpentically anxious to avoid the question that the committee has presented to President Durkee; I think, however, the public is entitled to an in-the-case" Dean Miller then proceeds to relate the callung of these questions to the question that the older Durkee in an effort to save the Howe apportionation. He declares, in his statement, that he did not intend to use the insistence of the $500,000 item for the medical school in the remaining years, and stands seemed to be, according to Dean Miller, that if "worse came to the regular appropriation of Howard which had been placed in jeopardy in the course of the committee's position of unfriendly senators from the democratic South.
Dean Miller states, continuing, after conference and consultation, it went to the office of Senator Stuart of the Howard University status of the Howard University matter. He could not be seen until the senator could not be seen until the senator held his clerk evidence to make a memorandum of the matter that a paper on the subject of a blank sheet of paper with lead pencil a note to the purport that in case it seemed that the $500,000 item would
The Informer, in previous issues, has discussed the urgent and crying need of better school buildings, facilities, equipment and more spacious campuses, and now the business manager of the Houston school system makes public the valuation of the grounds, buildings, furniture and fixtures, both in the white and colored schools.
He states that a committee, composed of three local real estate men, has made a survey and taken an inventory of the local school holdings, etc., and here is their valuation of the school property of the Houston Independent School District:
WHITE SCHOOLS—GROUND $2,398,000; BUILDINGS, $5,044,000; FURNITURE AND FIXTURES, $827,500; TOTAL VALUATION, $8,269,500.
COLORED SCHOOLS—GROUND $154,500; BUILDINGS, $457,000; FURNITURE AND FIXTURES, $55,000; TOTAL, $666,500.
This appraisal places the entire holdings, property, equipment, et cetera, of the Houston schools at $3,936,000.
But it does even more than that! It reveals the shocking, deplorable and alarming condition of the colored schools and how the public schools for colored children have been norely and almost criminally slighted, neglected and overlooked.
ast of Teepot Dome, United States, from this division of mankind, Howard University, caused by the mg note by Dean Miller, on a sheet Smoot. Events followed, unexas charged and surcharged with assistance. Some, unfriendly to the kreeke, a white man, at the head the occasion to demand the unfriendly to Dean Miller, and tremendous success of the Negro biased and just what happened jopardize the normal appropriation of Howard University, it might be well not to insist upon its inclusion.
Letter Signed Without Title.
The memorandum was signed in my absence without any title or description of the faculty and did not mention the blind judgment of every member of the faculty and of the administration of the school. I then went to Senator Phipps' office and found that the item would be found at the senate. I then saw Senator Curtis McKenna, who had his negative vote on Thursday and stated that he would push the $200,000 for the new program. I might seem to莽莽 the republics and unequal men opposing the program, but the would be random. "Of course, I had no idea that I would random to Senator Logo or Senator Leuroot or have it read upon the floor of the senate. I never ever, that this was done and caused some confusion in handling the extra money," he said. However, the secretary and president were put in touch with the situation.
"I might add that up to Saturday morning I had kept in close touch with the president and members of the faculty, all of whom at that time had given up hope of the $500,000 item. No one at that time would form a protest that it would be forced through the senate as a matter of political expediency.
"Turn opposition to Durke.
The United Negro Press has received a statement from an alumnus of Howard University, who says that

HERE IS WHAT THESE FIGURES REALLY MEAN AND PROVE! DESPIE THE FACT THAT THE COLORED POPULATION CONSTITUTES FULLY 25 PER CENT OF OUR TOTAL LOCAL CITIZENRY, THESE PEOPLE ONLY HAVE RECEIVED 7.08 PER CENT OF THE APPROPRIATIONS, EXPENDITIONS AND CONSIDERATIONS FOR GROUNDS, BUILDINGS AND EQUIPMENT; LEAVING 92.97 PER CENT FOR THE OTHER 75 PER CENT OF OUR URBAN POPULATION!
Now, if figures do not prevaricate, as the ancient adage goes, then there has been gross negligence demonstrated in making proper, suitable, fair and decent provisions for the colored scholastics of this city and community and our civic pride has been shocked and fallen below par.
Not only is the disparity in these figures startling and staggering, but the report did not disclose the fact that the majority of the colored schools are located in swamps, hog-wallows, sloughs, wetlands and secluded areas that is why it has been colored teachers and pupils to virtually swim to and from these school buildings!

PULLMAN COMPANY ASSISTS PORTERS IN MONEY MATTERS
(Preston News Service).
Memphis, Tenn.-Following the appearance of an editorial in the Commercial Appeal to the effect that employees of the Pullman Company were employed by the Pullman Company, Batcher, Jr., district manager of the Pullman Company with headquarters here, issued the following statement: "Employee of the Pullman Company is employed at the times of the so-called 'loan sharks' and, if through failure to apprise the company of their financial difficulties, the clauses of the 'loan sharks'; they are not fired by the company, but are as required by the company." Under our rule, I am permitted, at any time, to issue to any employee any amount of money I seem fit to be charged against, and for the curcuma of the Pullman Company permitted to issue a check in excess of $100, but there is nothing to prevent

Washington, D. C.—"The time has come for republican leadership to stop acting on the defensive, and to begin aggressive warfare on political traducers, who sat silent while the greatest怒ry of waste, incompetency and corruption that the world has ever witnessed took place in Washington under the democratic administration." Thus closes a remarkable statement by Hon. John T. Adams, chairman of the republican national committee. The chairman was speaking directly to the subject of Teapot Dome, and the frantic efforts of the "holier than thou" democrats to besmirch him were directed to the subject of Suiting action to the word, however, with reference to being aggressive, in another statement issued by Mr. Adams, speaking on the subject of the confirmation of Walter L. NICIPALITY—EXCEPTING, HOWEVER, THE STREETS IN COLORED RESIDENTIAL SECTIONS.
This condition must be remedied and situation relieved, if our schools are to take their rightful and logical place beside the other schools of the Lone Star commonwealth.
There are any number of smaller towns and cities in Texas that possess school buildings and equipment that makes Housetown JUST THINK OF IT! THE ENTIRE VALUATION OF THE COLORED GROUNDS, BUILDINGS, FURNITURE AND FIXTURES IS ONLY $666,500: WHILE THE VALUATION OF THE FURNITURE AND FIXTURES ALONE IN THE WHITE SCHOOLS is $827,500.
Expressed in a different way: the various school boards of this community have invested and spent less for the physical properties and equipment of the entire colored school system than for the colored schools in the entire state; in fact, they have even spent $161,000 more for said furniture and fixtures than for and on all the colored schools combined.
This niggarly policy has been pursued in the face of the fact that Houston has both the largest colored population and largest number of colored scholastics in the entire state; in fact, the colored schools are like Bert Williams“Bert Needmore.” We “need everything”—from school houses in. to grounds out! MISSISSIPPI LIFE OFFICIAL DISCUSSES STANDARD'S DEAL; INJUNCTION HALTS TRANSFER
Memphis, Tenn.—In order to correct some of the erroneous stories that are going the rounds of the press with reference to the attempted sale of the Mitsubishi Electric plant, wish to make the following statement: First, it is obvious that the attempt sold a sale of the business of the Mitsubishi Life to the Southern Insurance Company was not for and could not be sold by the Standard Life or for covering any impairment that may have existed in the latter mentioned company. Insurance companies under the laws of most of the states, and certainly under the laws of New York, have their annual statements on file in the department of insurance not later than the 1st day of March each year. Standard Life Insurance company has already filed an annual statement. Exhibit 10.1.1 is being published in various columns.
The sale of the business of the Mississippi Life has not yet been consumed. The company have not yet been liquidated and are among its stockholders for a distribution among its stockholders in a way that the Service Company, claimant to the right of the Mississippi Life Insurance Company, or Standard Life through Service Company, or Standard Life through Life is by participating in the liquidation of the company and, of course, this already too late to have been benefited by it to Standard Life, in meeting any impairment necessary for filling its annual statement with the insurance coverage business of the Mississippi Life at Company for profit and for profit only
Here, to the layman, appears a curious fact; for the purchasing company of the Mississippi Life, actually receive a net of about $200,000, while at the same time coming into contact with the stockholders, if the sale could be consummated.
Since the Mississippi Life would have to deal together with about $200,000 of assets, how would the stockholders of the Mississippi Life profit by this way?
In this way: The total assets of the Mississippi Life are the end of a $700,000 loan over to the Southern Insurance Company $200,000 of these assets, which taking over its business and putting up the reserves on it, it would still be liquidated and distributed to its stockholders. If these assets would liquidate at their prices and distributed to $70; and right here is where Service Company and the stockholders fight, for if their title to the stock they claim is a valid one, they would participate in the sale, or about 78 per cent.
Situated differently, Service Company agreed to "pay" share per share for the Cox stock. The Cox stock doubt hopes by selling the business to make the stock worth something like $100.
The injection proceedings at Jackson, Miss, will stay the calmness at the moment, but they will be reviewed by a court of equity; in the meantime, it is hoped that some business will be done with the Southern Insurance Company, and with all concerned, by which this business can be turned over to a colony of investors. If the policemen, but to the race. If Service Company wants to see a race, if it is an honorable way by which it can yet be done, if Service Company through its event and activity, Will they do it?

HOTEL MEN STAGED ANOTHER SMOKER AT SMITH'S CAFE
The Hotel Men's smoker at Smith's Cafe, 114 Milk Street, last Thursday night was a howling success from the minute Arin Smith, the master of the game, opened the door for him, p.m. down to one minute to 12 midnight.
There were fourteen numbers on the program, including invocation by O. M. Gom. The guest was O. M. Gom.
Carl Simpson's talk on Christianity was as Ocelar Collins' short talk on service, in which he scored those waters, and gave good hope to the audience, expecting the festivities were punctuated by numerous jokes, and numerous stories including the telephone, including a telephone monologue by C. N. Ferguson, but it remained the stunt of the evening by having a telegraph which was delivered to him to the monologue and to it said, "Dear Mr.笑," Sorry I can't be present at the Hotel Men's smoker tonight. (Signe) The entire program reflected much credit upon the organization sponsoring the event, who was in charge.

FEDERAL OFFICES FOR A FEW. OR RIGHTS FOR ALL
The editor of the Galveston City Times, William H. Noble, Jr. takes The Informer to task for our recent editorial on "Cohen Politics and Race Rights;" wherein we assumed the position that the political leaders of our race should not merely concentrate and center their attack on a few federal offices, but should be more concerned and interested in the entire race enjoy and exercising all their inanable and constitutional rights, warranties and prerogatives.
In his editorialette, the Island City serge pays his respects to The Informer in the following manner:
Unjust political sentiment of The Houston Inferior has week along the line of hindering against the colored leaders of the republican party in Texas, and the party is not for high political recognition is not wise, because the thought is not forward, neutral, fair. In Texas hopes the Houston Inferior will have few words in the wrong direction. The political welfare of the colored people in Texas and all other states is jurist as essential to be satisfied with the political situation. We have new political positions of presidential size given the colored of the party in the South during the past twenty years have all been taken up by the Republican party. We keep the few Southern colored republicans out of office the South would go white republican, and all passing events have shown the Republican party's commitment to this nation to take action and set down upon it. The Times is glad to note that the Lincoln Republican party has been working on a new ring in the nation's republican equation for justice, etc, and that such distinguished leaders as Hon. Medellín McCarthy, Dr. John D. McCarthy, and Dr. John D. McCarthy chairman, showed a new ray of hope as to being justly broad towards our race. Why, the Times has information nearly a century of character, ability, etc., for leading positions. The editor of The Houston Inferior was hardly in the world and so he should give his opinion of such great subjects is out of order and the City Times so rules.
The Inferior does not care to enter into a journalistic controversy about the Cohen appointment, for this paper not only favors a colored citizen occupying a high federal office in New York, Chicago, New Orleans, but in even Houston and Galveston, if such man possesses the qualifications for the position he holds.
Our esteemed Island City contemporary evidently did not read our editorial understanding, or else he did not have his "specks" in the said editorial, he undoubtedly only saw other things.
Bren Noble, like so many old-timers of the race, seems to think that old age and long residence give him a monopoly on all the sense and that any person who dares to express an opinion that is not correct and unstinted approbation, is "out of order" and such unluckyyme.
Every republican administration since Grant has appointed some colored man to high office or tendered him the position; yet succeeding administration finds the colored race enjoying and exercising less of its political rights and privileges, merely lay down a box barrage for a few federal plums and then catch a few of them, they have obtained their reward, received their compensation and attained their objective.
This paper takes the position now, as it took in the editorial which the Galveston editor takes umbrage, that the right to hold a federal office should not and does not transcend the rights of all the people.
Going a bit further, The Informer would much see any colored man and woman in America enjoying all his and her rights under the constitution (if it became necessary to forego all rights under the federal pie counter, while teeming millions of their racial brothers and sisters are belying on an existence on crumbs and huskings.
If people can not exercise their elective franchise rights, how can they safeguard their political welfare?
If the colored people in Louisiana and other Southern states believe that the federal government would not witness the睁眼 and sorrowful spectacle of Dixi senators opposing

SUN'S Greatest Weekly Newspaper
Cohen or any other race man by invoking "senatorial courtesy" and raising the howl that said colored citizen is "personally objectionable" to them!
Which would any same and race-loving man prefer: to see Cohen land a fat, juicy federal post in New Orleans, while thousands of his citizens have been denied the right to vote in New Orleans and denied refused virtually all of their guaranteed political, civic and economic rights; or to see all the colored people of Louisiana (and other Southern states, as for that matter) exercising and enjoying the same rights and privileges as other American citizens, even if it meant that men of Cohen's calibre must forego and relinquish their claims to such public offices?
Given the colored race, or other race, the right to use the bible in the fifth amendment, have any fear about the offices—they are a natural consequence.
In demanding that Cohen be confirmed or kept in office, the republican leaders are trying to play a shrewd and adroit game of politics, ostensibly manifesting and evincing so much concern and interest in the race; yet we have to hear or read about these same white leaders contending for the enforcement and observance of the fifth amendment of the federal constitution, which the South has treated as a "mere scrap of paper."
The Informer contends and insists that, if these republican leaders and politicians are anxious to see the colored citizens of the South come into full possession of their constitutional and fundamental rights and guarantees, why do they not put forth some real efforts to remove from our racial ankles the shackles of the law? The carcass Jones-Jenkins may show, a real other injustices and inequalities?
If this be political heresy—if this makes us "out of order,"
vea, if this be treason, then make the most of it! Selah!
PRACTICE OF PYRAMIDING RENTS.
And numbers of such cases might be cited here, and we learn that our people are pulling off this same stunt in the North and East, and that rents are becoming almost prohibitive. We should learn learn some sense between now and judgment day, for we will be doing our own work and when it comes to pulling off bonehead stairs and committing monumental blunders, we are past masters! Individually, it is an easy matter to boost rents, but it requires organized effort, such as the Chinese are doing in the Windy City, permit us to remark on our own wrenches and to permit us to remark in passing that our people should more and more enter the home owning class, and stop paying for places several times and then ultimately discover that all they have to show for the money expended is a pile of rent receipts. It is so easy to acquire a home nowadays that there is hardly any people who can afford it, and here and elsewhere; especially where they earn good wages and have such splendid chances to buy and pay for homes on the deferred payment plan. But let us stop this hellish and damnable practice of always trying to cut each other's throats, for in the end we are the greatest people in the world. Our people are far from being educated, for we have apparently confused book learning with education.

"ALL GODS CHILLIN' GOT WINGS."
Those who own this play have put out a lot of well-worried propaganda in favor of it. They have tried to force the audience to believe that it was all "for it" to sake. That it has nothing necessarily to do with false impressions, however. And evil influence is imputed by putting on a claw of "art." They are full of "art." Sieno was an artist.
The very nature of this play is to create sentimental middle school drama. That is in the very best reason, of all, that the school is in the same school, but in the city of race prejudice, it becomes the source of the race prejudice, and the sending the prosecured race to the city of plain, and that is logical. But while that is the natural side of the matter for American race prejudice to take it, it is not the side of the Negro to Negro in Cameroon. While the play, indirectly, impedes the South's ability to allow its children to be allowed in the South, for the South, is so ally that it cannot stand to see a play in the South, even in a play or in a picture. And this play is not needed by the prejudice of the South, all of their bullish robbery, already there. But it is in the North that this play can do, from the Knix Klux
