Some, unfriendly to the administration of President Durkee, a white man, at the head of Howard University, have seized the occasion to demand the president's resignation; others, unfriendly to Dean Miller, and probably jealous because of the tremendous success of the Negro movement, have blamed and misleading statements concerning just what happened. Miller Explaina His Side. Dean Miller explains his side of the question in an extended statement sent to the committee of the course of which he has declared: "I am serpentically anxious to avoid the question that the committee has presented to President Durkee; I think, however, the public is entitled to an in-the-case" Dean Miller then proceeds to relate the callung of these questions to the question that the older Durkee in an effort to save the Howe apportionation. He declares, in his statement, that he did not intend to use the insistence of the $500,000 item for the medical school in the remaining years, and stands seemed to be, according to Dean Miller, that if "worse came to the regular appropriation of Howard which had been placed in jeopardy in the course of the committee's position of unfriendly senators from the democratic South. COLORED SCHOOLS—GROUND $154,500; BUILDINGS, $457,000; FURNITURE AND FIXTURES, $55,000; TOTAL, $666,500. This appraisal places the entire holdings, property, equipment, et cetera, of the Houston schools at $3,936,000. But it does even more than that! Not only is the disparity in these figures startling and staggering, but the report did not disclose the fact that the majority of the colored schools are located in swamps, hog-wallows, sloughs, wetlands and secluded areas that is why it has been colored teachers and pupils to virtually swim to and from these school buildings! Insurance companies under the laws of most of the states, and certainly under the laws of New York, have their annual statements on file in the department of insurance not later than the 1st day of March each year. Standard Life Insurance company has already filed an annual statement. Exhibit 10.1.1 is being published in various columns. The sale of the business of the Mississippi Life has not yet been consumed. The company have not yet been liquidated and are among its stockholders for a distribution among its stockholders in a way that the Service Company, claimant to the right of the Mississippi Life Insurance Company, or Standard Life through Service Company, or Standard Life through Life is by participating in the liquidation of the company and, of course, this already too late to have been benefited by it to Standard Life, in meeting any impairment necessary for filling its annual statement with the insurance coverage business of the Mississippi Life at Company for profit and for profit only Here, to the layman, appears a curious fact; for the purchasing company of the Mississippi Life, actually receive a net of about $200,000, while at the same time coming into contact with the stockholders, if the sale could be consummated. If these assets would liquidate at their prices and distributed to $70; and right here is where Service Company and the stockholders fight, for if their title to the stock they claim is a valid one, they would participate in the sale, or about 78 per cent. Situated differently, Service Company agreed to "pay" share per share for the Cox stock. The Cox stock doubt hopes by selling the business to make the stock worth something like $100. OR RIGHTS FOR ALL The editor of the Galveston City Times, William H. Noble, Jr. takes The Informer to task for our recent editorial on "Cohen Politics and Race Rights;" wherein we assumed the position that the political leaders of our race should not merely concentrate and center their attack on a few federal offices, but should be more concerned and interested in the entire race enjoy and exercising all their inanable and constitutional rights, warranties and prerogatives. In his editorialette, the Island City serge pays his respects to The Informer in the following manner: Unjust political sentiment of The Houston Inferior has week along the line of hindering against the colored leaders of the republican party in Texas, and the party is not for high political recognition is not wise, because the thought is not forward, neutral, fair. In Texas hopes the Houston Inferior will have few words in the wrong direction. The political welfare of the colored people in Texas and all other states is jurist as essential to be satisfied with the political situation. We have new political positions of presidential size given the colored of the party in the South during the past twenty years have all been taken up by the Republican party. We keep the few Southern colored republicans out of office the South would go white republican, and all passing events have shown the Republican party's commitment to this nation to take action and set down upon it. The Times is glad to note that the Lincoln Republican party has been working on a new ring in the nation's republican equation for justice, etc, and that such distinguished leaders as Hon. Medellín McCarthy, Dr. John D. McCarthy, and Dr. John D. McCarthy chairman, showed a new ray of hope as to being justly broad towards our race. Why, the Times has information nearly a century of character, ability, etc., for leading positions. The editor of The Houston Inferior was hardly in the world and so he should give his opinion of such great subjects is out of order and the City Times so rules. The Inferior does not care to enter into a journalistic controversy about the Cohen appointment, for this paper not only favors a colored citizen occupying a high federal office in New York, Chicago, New Orleans, but in even Houston and Galveston, if such man possesses the qualifications for the position he holds. Our esteemed Island City contemporary evidently did not read our editorial understanding, or else he did not have his "specks" in the said editorial, he undoubtedly only saw other things. Bren Noble, like so many old-timers of the race, seems to think that old age and long residence give him a monopoly on all the sense and that any person who dares to express an opinion that is not correct and unstinted approbation, is "out of order" and such unluckyyme. Every republican administration since Grant has appointed some colored man to high office or tendered him the position; yet succeeding administration finds the colored race enjoying and exercising less of its political rights and privileges, merely lay down a box barrage for a few federal plums and then catch a few of them, they have obtained their reward, received their compensation and attained their objective. This paper takes the position now, as it took in the editorial which the Galveston editor takes umbrage, that the right to hold a federal office should not and does not transcend the rights of all the people. Going a bit further, The Informer would much see any colored man and woman in America enjoying all his and her rights under the constitution (if it became necessary to forego all rights under the federal pie counter, while teeming millions of their racial brothers and sisters are belying on an existence on crumbs and huskings. If people can not exercise their elective franchise rights, how can they safeguard their political welfare? If the colored people in Louisiana and other Southern states believe that the federal government would not witness the睁眼 and sorrowful spectacle of Dixi senators opposing EDISON The Houston Informer SUN'S Greatest Weekly Newspaper Cohen or any other race man by invoking "senatorial courtesy" and raising the howl that said colored citizen is "personally objectionable" to them! Which would any same and race-loving man prefer: to see Cohen land a fat, juicy federal post in New Orleans, while thousands of his citizens have been denied the right to vote in New Orleans and denied refused virtually all of their guaranteed political, civic and economic rights; or to see all the colored people of Louisiana (and other Southern states, as for that matter) exercising and enjoying the same rights and privileges as other American citizens, even if it meant that men of Cohen's calibre must forego and relinquish their claims to such public offices? Given the colored race, or other race, the right to use the bible in the fifth amendment, have any fear about the offices—they are a natural consequence. In demanding that Cohen be confirmed or kept in office, the republican leaders are trying to play a shrewd and adroit game of politics, ostensibly manifesting and evincing so much concern and interest in the race; yet we have to hear or read about these same white leaders contending for the enforcement and observance of the fifth amendment of the federal constitution, which the South has treated as a "mere scrap of paper." The Informer contends and insists that, if these republican leaders and politicians are anxious to see the colored citizens of the South come into full possession of their constitutional and fundamental rights and guarantees, why do they not put forth some real efforts to remove from our racial ankles the shackles of the law? The carcass Jones-Jenkins may show, a real other injustices and inequalities? If this be political heresy—if this makes us "out of order," vea, if this be treason, then make the most of it! Selah! PRACTICE OF PYRAMIDING RENTS. And numbers of such cases might be cited here, and we learn that our people are pulling off this same stunt in the North and East, and that rents are becoming almost prohibitive. We should learn learn some sense between now and judgment day, for we will be doing our own work and when it comes to pulling off bonehead stairs and committing monumental blunders, we are past masters! Individually, it is an easy matter to boost rents, but it requires organized effort, such as the Chinese are doing in the Windy City, permit us to remark on our own wrenches and to permit us to remark in passing that our people should more and more enter the home owning class, and stop paying for places several times and then ultimately discover that all they have to show for the money expended is a pile of rent receipts. It is so easy to acquire a home nowadays that there is hardly any people who can afford it, and here and elsewhere; especially where they earn good wages and have such splendid chances to buy and pay for homes on the deferred payment plan. But let us stop this hellish and damnable practice of always trying to cut each other's throats, for in the end we are the greatest people in the world. Those who own this play have put out a lot of well-worried propaganda in favor of it. They have tried to force the audience to believe that it was all "for it" to sake. That it has nothing necessarily to do with false impressions, however. And evil influence is imputed by putting on a claw of "art." They are full of "art." Sieno was an artist.
