The city council has been petitioned by a rising number of colored Houston to gravel several streets in the colored residential sections in the city, Pitch and Fath wards and to permanently pave Dowling street from Preston to Jasper Avenue. From General Joseph F. Wolters, chairman of the local committee, made an earnest and impassioned plan for more colored citizens, as not mere "colored people" but "colored people" here. Here are the streets the commission is asking the city fathers to build. Third Ward. Pigeon street, McKinney to Bell; Sampson street, Pierce to Holman avenue; Emile street, McKinney avenue; Emile street, Pierce to Holman avenue; Dowling street, Proton to Holman avenue; Dowling street, Proton to Holman avenue, S. A. & A. P. track to Dowling street; Tam avenue, S. A. & A. P. track to Scott street. Cleveland street, Street to Heson street; Bibrarian street, San Pellejo to Webster street; Bailey street, San Pellejo to McFennew street Fifth Ward Clark street, Nance to Odin ave. or Providence street, HIL to Charlotte street, Lorne to Quitanne street. This is a worthy appeal and if the cities are to be represented in the petition, comps as it does from several of the leading white and colored cities in Houston is practically hopeless. Too long have the various municipalities colored the colored cities in this and other colored white cities been in different and apathetic regarding the public-colored white cities been different and apathetic regarding the colored residents of this community. We sincerely trust that; the city council will not assume the significance taken by the state legislature of Mississaids. We are not aware of the fact is a demand for "social equality," and as such must be denied and refused. The doctrine that "any old thing is good enough for the 'niggers' is going to ultimately prove the South's right to be 'a good one' is proved to be, and horrible in the colored ghotton, the palfial and luxurious mansions in the exclusive white residential districts are not immune from the ravage of the social revolution. Atlanta, Ga., was born on March 16, fortnight, last Saturday night for his family. PRINCIPAL HONORED Governor Pat Pet Nef has appointed Dr. John Grassi Olsonbeer, principal of the University of Oklahoma's university College, a delegate to the Congo National Educational Congress, which visits Philadelphia. Stephen Pawton to Go And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of Jesus, sweet spice, that they might and endure him. He was Jesus and endure him. He is not here. He was garden, broken only by the mutilated sentients who chatted with them. We did not know what the disciples did on the Sabbath day. Probably they spent the day in the retirement room. Their thoughts were nailed to that Cross on Calvary, and their spirits were pall of that tragic of Good Friday. We can never understand the utter misery and desolation of those hours between Christ's death and His Resurrection. Our faith rests on the centuries; and when we read of the Crucifixion we have in mind the glory of Easter morning. But to the disciples, all their hopes had been shattered, all their plans frustrated, and all their love buried in Joseph's tomb. A resurrection did not enter into their thoughts at all, and therefore their testimony is the more valuable. True, they had heard Jesus say that He would rise again, but they had interpreted that in a sort of future and symbolic sense. Before dawn, the women mentioned in our text, perhaps with some others, started for the sepulcher bearing their spices and ointments with which they expected to finish the embalming of the blessed body of their Lord. A resurrection had no place in their thoughts. They came to a minister to the dead, not to rest the living. Their one great concern was: Who would help them to roll away the stone which sealed the tomb, and which was too great for their united strength? As they draw near they see that the stone is: I need away, and no little did they think of a resurrection, that the open tomb brought them only perplexity and grief. The Gospels were not written for the curious, but for the devout. They are most silent therefore, where myth and legend would be most garrulous. Here we are told nothing of the wondrum Resurrection. Did He awake alone? Or was He attended by the herarchy of heaven? We are told only what concerns mankind, viz., the sufficient manifestation of Jesus to His people. His Resurrection. We can reconstruct something of the events of that first Easter morning from the Gospel accounts. First the women come and find the tomb empty. Mary Magdalene immediately runs back to the city and tells Peter and John about it. They rush out to the garden of Joseph, John, the younger man, taking the lead. The women have left. Peter enters the tomb and sees the linen clothes which had covered the body of Jesus, and there begins to dawn upon them something of the meaning of the words of Jesus. "On the third day I shall rise again." Mary comes back and Peter and John have gone, and no one is there to explain what has taken place; so she stands by the sepulcher and pours out her distress in tears. N w comes the first revelation of the risen Christ. "Mary," He says, in his address, and in a moment her sorrow is turned into joy. It is always a life. The living Christ is the worst great joy-benger. Without Him, our thoughts can only be thoughts of death. With Him we enter into the vastness of which life is only the outer court. Life! Death! They seem to be the very antipodes of thought. We have the exclusive, but Jesus has taught us that out of life death is to arise. The Resurrection of Jesus is the ground in a day when men seek positive grounds of thought and action, and the ending power of the Resurrection is its fact. A sentiment has its day. The Easter Gospel is the Gospel of all comfort. "If Christ be not risen then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain." So says St. Paul, and then comes his triumphal about the certainty: "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them that slept." That is the Gospel of comfort which this world of sermon and death needs so much. That is the glad and glorious Gospel of Easter Day. Today we seek, not a dead Christ, but a living one, and then, may it soon be our bliss to see the Rhesus Savior face to face, as did Mary on that very first Easter morning. J. H. Kennard, was passed away on the 9th inst. after illness covering five years, was h from Bethel Baptist Church Sun afternoon. C.-Today) There are about 4,800,000 colored communicants in the Christian churches of America. Within forty years time, the number of black students literacy from 70 per cent to 22.9 per cent. Colleges and schools have not only been built and opened to millions of black students, but have standardized of these schools have been raised so that they have gained the white schools in the country. It is safe to say that a great majority of the black schools in the country have higher schools of learning. But what sort of ministers, once this big formation of ministers, can be given them for spiritual leaders. Each year the church is asking for 1,500 educated colored men to enter them. Of the 1600 called, only 100 have ever attended a divinity school; the rest have been recruited to be to be recruited from the salty. Eliza, Eiljah's Successor (I Kings 19:15-21; II Kings 2:2-15.) 1. His Anolting (I Kings 19:15-21). In obedience to the Lord's command, Eiljah went forth from his hiding place in Horeb to anoint Elisha as prophet. While Elija was plowing with oxen Eiljah passed by and cast his mantle upon him. 2. His Training (II Kings 2:2-8). Eilsha came into the life of Eiljah in the field, where he called him forth from the plow, and there was thenceforth real friendship between them, such that Eilsha clung to his master to the very last, in spite of three urgent requests for him to remain behind. 3. Eilsha's Double Portion (II Kings 2:12-15). (1) Eilsha's cry (v. 12). “The chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.” This implies that Eiljah was the true national defense. (2) Eilsha takes his place (v. 13). The taking of Eiljah's mantle indicates his assumption of his place as a prophet. (3) Eiljah's spirit upon Eilsha (vv. 14, 15). This is proven by the use of his power to divide the Jordan. Also it is proven by the testimony of the sons of the prophets. II. Elisha's Ministry (II Kings 3:10). 1. The Trenches Filled With Water (Chap. 3:16-20). Jehoram, in alliance with the king of Judah, went against the Moabites. His army was in great straits for lack of water. When they appealed to Elisha, he bade them show their faith by digging trenches in desert soil. The Lord sent water to fill the trenches. 2. Increase of the Widow's Oil (Chap. 4:1-7). This woman's husband had died, leaving a debt, and the creditor was about to make bondmen of her two sons. Elisha caused the scant supply of the widow's oil to be so increased that she sold enough to pay the debt. 3. The Shunamite's Son Restored (Chap. 4:8-37). Because of hospitality shown Elisha, he sought to help his hostess by promising that the Lord would give her a child. The joy brought by the fulfillment of the prophet's announcement was short-lived, for while yet but a lad he was taken away by death. In her sorrow she went to Elisha and he restored the child's life. 4. Heals Deadly Pottage (Chap. 4:38-41). In time of famine they made a vegetable soup from whatever growing plants they could find. By mistake a poisonous plant had been gathered. By putting meal into the pot, the soup was made healthful. 5. Fed One Hundred Men (Chap 4-22)4. To the astonishment of his attack, the King sent twenty barky cake and aack of uncooked grain. 5. Received Nathan, the Leaper (Chap 5-1:1)4. At the instance of a captive Jewish maid, Nathan, the great Syrian general, was brought to Nathan, and he received from Nathan Eliah, through his servant, he dime him seven times in the Jordan. This message, coming from the angelic guardian of the sepulchre that early Sabbath morn, struck awe and consternation the hearts of Christ's followers who sought Him in the tomb. Though He foretold His triumph over death, the true import and significance of His statement and declaration had never been fully comprehended and realized by those who followed Him daily and such works, deeds and miracles as no other man had ever done. Though He came to die and expiate His life upon the Roman cross for the salvation and reclamation of man, the true purpose of His mission was misunderstood by those nearest and closest to Him. He was not the only one of His heights, the hope of His disciples was interred in Joseph's tomb. But the faithful women, in keeping with their custom, came early to the grave on the Sabbath morning to demonstrate their love and respect to One who had spoken as no other man spoke and the same as Jesus. To further remove their doubts and misgivings, the heavenly guardian at the tomb invited these early visitors to inspect the Master's erstwhile resting place—"Come, see the place where the heart was resting in the tomb that He had triumphed over the powers of earth, hell and the grave. The whole scheme of human redemption hinges upon faith and the dual personality of Jesus Christ, who, by offering Himself as a propitiation for man's sin, became the second Adam and reestablished connection between the Creator and the creature. With songs of victory and paens of thanksgiving, all Christendom celebrates Easter Sunday as the day of His mighty triumph—as the occasion when He arose from his deathly repose and marched triumphantly and majestically from the sepulchre, reuniting a sinful world with a sin-forgiving God and making the plan of salvation for the world. The Informer has previously cited our people's attention to the big bond election to be held on Saturday, April 26, and has endeavored to show the colored voters why they should get some definite and concrete assurances from the city fathers regarding the election. We have also made money for civic improvements in colored residential sections. The Informer stands firm in its original position that the colored voters should not vote for these propositions without some consideration being given to their sections by the city fathers. Officially such conditions, we certainly do not mean that we should not vote at all but that we should march to the polls en masse and register a negative vote against the several issues submitted on election day. If the bond issues are defeated, we know that we shall get absolutely nothing out of them; and if they are victorious, we are more than likely to be in the same predicament. So why vote for increasing your taxes and getting nothing in return but a tax receipt? The Informer is not opposed to civic progress and municipal growth, but this paper is tired of such progress and growth at the expense of our group, while we get nothing in return for our support and taxation—not even promises. Our colored population in Houston is so backwards, so indifferent and unconcerned about things that are so vital and essential to its well-being, welfare and perpetuity, and whenever an opportunity arises, we must take it little, little or almost is manifested in the matter or proposition. We need a movement here, similar to one now being launched in Galveston, to organize the colored voters and educate them in civic matters; so that the race can get some civic considerations from those in office. Without organization it is utterly impossible to accomplish much, either pro or con; and here is where we continually fall down on our job. If the city council can not designate what improvements will be made in colored residential sections out of the proposed bond issues, the city council should proceed to the polls on Saturday, April 28, and vote against all the propositions submitted on the ballot. The ballot is our only means of talking—say it with votes!
