SHOWS NEGRO RACE'S ABILITY TO MANAGE BIG VENTURES THE FIRST WORKING CLASS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA. ANOTHER PLEASING GIFT: THE HOUSTON INFORMER A.K.F. BATTLE JOSEPH H. WARD COLERIDGE-TAYLOR CHORAL CLUB WILL RENDER PROGRAMS See "Black Tank," the pitting marshal of all time, when the Austin Baldwin team played against the urdy, Sunday and Monday, July 18-20 The AUTHIFIES have a real clash club (By The Associated Negro Press.) Tuskegee, Ala. —The United States Army Institute of the colored people of the country an interesting and worthwhile institution that offers the colored people of the country an interesting and worthwhile experience in the caring for our disabled service men to demonstrate the qualifications and attainments of Negro profesors. The institute has a large mammoth institution, the best which the government has yet built, the best training for the race to conduct in executive capacity, a big institution. The eyes of the government are applauding and the reactions resulting and the opinions formed are likely to influence many interests affecting the Coolidge Expresses interest. "The official at the Veteran's Bureau insure that they are grateful for the services of the manner in which Tuskegee Hospital is being handled." It was President Calvin Coolidge speaking in his SCHOLARSHIP TO BE AWARDED BY SOUTHERN LIFE In order to stimulate higher education among the graduates of the Houston Colored High and to encourage these young people to advance them, the Houston Office of the Southern Life Insurance Company (formerly Mississippi Life), 419-420 Old Temple, has launched a scholarship contest among 25 of the graduate students. This contest, which will terminate on Monday night, August 13, 2015, will afford some boy or girl of the race an opportunity to win a cash scholarship价 in the contest that this insurance company will formally launch Monday. Already District Manager C. C. Sturt has been successful in lining up about 25 boys and girls—all graduate of the Houston high—in this contest. The district specifically stipulates that only high school graduates are eligible to enter the name. The manager of the Southern Insurance Company deserves to be complimented for inaugurating such educational endeavors, and the In Education endeavors, to encourage the young people of our race in educational endeavors, and the In Education endeavors, to the standards of these contestants and help make the contest a huge success. Lesson for July 19 THE GOSPEL IN LYSTRA LESSON TEXT - 4018, 1411-88 GOLDEN TEXT—Blessed are they which are prefected for righteousness and righteousness for the kingdom of heaven—Matt. 5:18 TOPO-PIAL—Heilus a Heilus —TOPO-PIAL JUNIOR TOPIC—Paul Stoned at Lystra. INTERMEDIATE AND NENOR TOPIC- Going Forward in the Face of Difficult Young People and Adult Problems and Triumphs of Missionaries. 1. Paul and Barbahas Preaching at necium (v. 1, 7). 2. Their experience here was similar to what they experienced in Jesus synagogue and preaching, causing a multitude of Jews and Gentiles to believe. The unbelieving Jews joined Jesus to the most bitter opposition. 3. Their Manner of Preaching (v. 1). This is suggested by the little word "so" in verse one. They so spake that a great multitude believed. They were true preachers. Only that which brings them to preach is for Christ can be truly called preaching in the Biblical sense. It is not enough to merely bring the truth to the people. It is necessary such a way that men and women will respond for Christ. This is also true of the Sunday school teacher. Attitude Towards opposition (v. 3). 8. By the word "therefore." Long time therefore they have preached to the people, vent their preaching, but incited them to continue preaching. 9. The Lord Accepted Their Preaching (v. 3). Since the opposition was so fierce, the Lord granted special help which was needed. The An Effect of Their Praeching (v. 4). The multitude of the city was divided. Where men faithfully praethed 5. Paul and Barabbas Assumed (v. 5-7). The Jews and the Gentiles united in their belief. They appointed of their effort, they fed to Lysias and Derbe. 11. An Attempt to Worship Paul and Barabbas as Gods (v. 8-18). 1. The Occasion (v. 30-31). 1. The Occasion (v. 30-31). 1. God's gracious power shown in healing this lame man occasioned a new difficulty. That which ought to have been a gracious power in hindrance. This was a notable miracle. The man was a confirmed cripple. He had never walked On his way to Jerusalem in his heart (Rom. 10-17). When Paul perceived that he trusted Christ, he called with a loud voice that all could hear. The cure was instantaneous for he leaped up and walked (v. 10). Barnabas they called Jupiter and Paul, Mercurius because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Jupiter offered sacrifice unto these men (v. 13). 8. Their Eftaura Efforta (vv. 14). This foelit act was happily bracted by the tac of the apostles. (1) They denied that they were divine beings, and declared that to work with them passions to themselves was criminal. (2) They directed the people to turn away from these vain things unto God, and to leave the earth, and with left witness of Himself in that He has always done good, giving rain and fruitful seasons, and filling the earth with life. (3) The Stoning of Paul (vv. 12-22). Wicked Jews from Antioch and Jerusalem that intimate worship can harm him to hate this place where they stirred up the very people who were willing to worship them a little while before. This shows that intimate worship can harm a harried form in stoning Paul and dragged him out of the city for Paul and courage, he pressed on with his missionary duties, bearing the good tidings to the loot. (4) The Organization of Churches in Antioch (vv. 12-22). Vangelignation with Paul did not mean a haunt and supernatural preaching of the group, but the establishment of a church in which he was appointed in every church. The work of the missionary is not done until self-governing and self-propagating churches are established on the field. Seeing Christ in Men St. Vincent de Paul made it a rule of his life to be always looking for opportunities to be present. Don't fail to show on Wednesday and Thursday nights, July 25 and August 25, at the entertainment of Anilch, Trinity, Beth and East Trinity, Season 14. In a recent issue of The Informer we discussed the impossibility of erecting a decent, creditable and respectable brick school building for a sum of money not exceeding $7,500, to be employed in the school district for colored children; same being located in "deep" Third Ward. Mr. and Mrs. John Face, children and former mother, left this week overland for Kauaia City, where they plan to reside permanently. It remained for one of the white daily newspapers to term the colored high school, in 'an issue last week, as a "small affair", adding that when this building is completed it will not seat more than 300 pupils. See Sipley Co. for a good printing. Phones Preston 1969, 9852 8320 McKinney. Reasonable rates work called for and deliver prompt Mind you, the article did not say "accommodate 300," but "seat 300." We mention this because the local school authorities have a neat way of crowding two and three colored children into a seat at a table by one student in the public schools for other races in Houston. Ara. Allie Lee Anderson, Woldon, in whispering her sister, M. M. H. Mountain, M17 Live Oak, and other relatives. Remember those close and exciting games pulled off here during the last week of summer. Well, you in for another red hot series, beginning Saturday, J18 at West End Park and ending Monday. The school board has religiously avoided giving out any information about this proposed school structure, which made The Informer suspicious and dubious; the suspicion and doubt, apparently, being well founded since the announcement has been made that the building will be a "small affair"—a joke, a misnomer of the racial pride and a reflection upon the fair name of Miss Houston. Mr. McNeal and daughter Katherine, 933 Cleveland, left Sunday for Indiana, where she will spend weeks visiting friends and relatives. W. S. Knighton, 81 St. Charles, who has been suffering from a sprain back backed receive while on duty PRI. Here are the estimates of what the new colored high school building will cost: General contract, $70,900; plumbing, $10,848.50; electric, $3,800; heating, $9,265; architects, $4,740.67; site, $5,500; total cost, $13,454.17. Mrs. W. Jones, Lampasas, is spending several weeks in the city, the house-guest of her sister, Mrs. Frank Lee, 2005 Quitman, North Side. Notes the total costs in the erection of the following white high schools: Eastwood, $507,656.30; Northill, $471,700.17; South End (east of Main), $498,964.25; South End (west of Main), $501,849.12; South End, $148,917.15; Heights Senior, $604,290.29; North Side, $138,712.97 Bonds made in criminal cases; divorce matters attended to in speeding cases may appear in the Inland Revenue application in 11% 210% Fannin St., Preston 60886, (ttf) Of the $3,136,791.33 being spent by the board of education of the Houston Independent School District for junior, and senior high school sites and buildings, less than 1/25 is being invested in colored school buildings and sites; or rather we should say, in Mrs. Joe Sahino, Galveston, spent a low days in the city last week, the day before Oak; returned Oak; returned Monday, the Black Buffalo book after a week in Oklahoma and North Texas. She then in action at Sunday and Monday, July 13-20. Sunday and Monday, July 13-20. Now the board proposes another huge bond issue for financing a ward school building program, and notwithstanding the fact that our people have almost left out of the high school building program, we venture the assertion that the colored patrons of the school building program have more interest make any more demands than they made when the present $8,000,000 bond issue was submitted and carried.
