CHICAGO COLORED POSTAL WORKERS GET PROMOTIONS
(By the Associated Negro Press.)
Chicago, III—Word received from Congressman Madden's office in Washington on Friday brought gladness to the hearts of local postal workers when the announcement was made that three Negro clerks had been appointed to the office of the president of the Appomattox Club; Howard Cornwell, a also member, and Henry F. Wilson, president of the local branch of the National Postal Alliance, were the men selected. Their appointment was somewhat in the nature of a nomination. For several years the postal employees have been urging promotion for some few of our workers as a proof that there was no limit on ability when demonstrated and that the government placed all its servants upon the appointment to administration when Leader Edward H. Wright, with the support of Congressman Madden, entered the fray. A supporter of the appointment to administration and the names of the three men now appointed were mentioned in connection with that position. The result of all three who had the endorsement of all of the local postal organizations, the Phalarope Negro branch of the National Postal Alliance, the railway mall branch of the Postal XII Alliance, and the Chicago Postoffice Gris' Club.

ELMER WILLIAMS ORDERED TO BEAT WAY ON FREIGHT
Negro Youth in Maringo Murder Case, Arrested on Lunacy Charge After Proving Perfect Alibi, Relates Recent Experience—Says Harris County Sheriff Drove Him to Eureka Pines and Ordered Him to "Catch First Rattler Out of Town and Never Show Up in Houston Again"—Put Off Two Freights, Freed-Minded Youth Returns to Houston and Narrates His Story—Says Officers Used Violence to Force Original Confession to Lakin Street Murder.
Elmer Williams, the mentally defective young man who was brought here from Ohio and indicted for slaying an Italian woman on Lakin street during the winter, and who later proved an alibi when Dr. Sidwell came from Beatrice, Neb., and testified that the young man was in his institution for the feeble-minded at the time the crime was committed here, called the Inferior office since last issue and narrated some of his recent experiences in Houston.
He told of his arrest at Bryan, Ohio; how he had called at the postoffice at Ekhart, Indiana, for mail he was expecting from Kansas City, after leaving the Bentrice institution, and that a letter was given him which he did not open until he reached the Ohio town. Opposed to the murder, the alibi ten to Earl Williams, and while he was reading it, standing in the railroad yards, the railroad detective and sheriff of that county intercepted him, took the letter to see what it contained, and then arrested him, after reading its contents, and held him.
Williams, remained in the Harriet County jail until Thursday night of last week, when the sheriff, Will Williams, arrived with the cellar, with the instructions to get all

Williams says he was nervous, not knowing what trend affair had taken place, and he was violence was going to be done him by sympathizers of the Italian famine, even though he had been trumped against him by local officials. He reached the outside but was shown the sheriff's automobile according to Williams' statement and proceeded to the car, stating at the time that the sheriff) was going to release Williams' catch a rattler, get out of town and seen here any more. He was deputy accompanying him, drove his car out to signal tower near Kurela. Pine Street had been told the man admiring him to "catch the first rattler that passes by and stay away." He (Williams) went up into the same tower, a informant told the man what the sheriff had advised him to do. The tower man said such events were not told to Williams who to stand to catch a paired freight train. He was the first freight train came along about one hour after the sheriff turned to the city with two men who, apparently, did not notice the sheriff was delivering his valedictory to Williams, and he boarded the same. A brakeman had been there.

DESERVING PUPILS TO GET AWARDS OF SCHOLARSHIP
Taking the position that our people have reached that stage in civilization, we need to help them to help themselves and not depend so much upon the philanthropy that we have. E. Sunday School has started a midsummer drive in the form of a series of lectures on the nucleus of a fund to be used unselfilly to reach deserving youth, who excel in certain crafts or studies. The movement aims to accomplish the purpose of something tangible for the betterment and development. Already the movement is receiving substantial support, from the business community and Sunday schools of all denominations are being asked to co-operate, as made possible by the support of young people without regard to their religious affiliation. The committee is charged of the work of the school, Leward, Edward W. Mitchell W. Missila Harrison, Miss Althea McMorris and
Mr. Lery, who is devoting much of his movement, said this week: "We are moving to General Armstrong; Paul Lawrence Dunbar his William Tank Howell, and his brother, the all white men of gold, so some little urchin of the Negro race will be able to help for his achievement to the philanthropist, and the appeal is made to those of our own whose circumstances render them fortunate enough to help the deserving. The sponsors of the movement say no spoon should be made to the white man, nor the claiming for every little need and asking the white man to help in movement, to place us in a state of utter dependence from which it is hard to
St. Peter Sunday School, besides starting this movement, plan to have a model school whose influence will felt all over the city of New Orleans.

LG -The Council at Jerusalem.
1. The Controversy in the Church at
Antichip (xv, 143).
This difficulty was a most serious one for it threatened the disruption of the church into a Jewish and a Muslim community, and of the admission of the Gentiles into the church. That had been settled some years ago, and the Gentiles had nudus and his household. The question now was, on what ground could they be received? Should Gentile consent be accepted? Should the law as a condition of salvation? This issue was brought on by the coming of certain men from Jerusalem, who had been after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved (v. 1). The question was so grave that it was unable to put the men to silence. These Jewish律法 had the letter of the Scripture on their side. They were unable to be saved. This was enjoined upon believers (Gen. 17:14). Paul could not point to any Scripture where it had been abolished, but the Scripture was justified before he was curedized, his antagonists could answer. "Tee, but after justification the matter was justified before he brethren at Antioch referred to refer the matter to the mother church at Barbans and others were sent as a deputation to Jerusalem. At an informal reception by the church at Barbans and others were sent as things which God had done for them.
II. The Deliberations of the Council (vy. 6-21).
1. Peter's Speech (yy. 6-11).
(3) Following this will be the conversion of the world through the agency of convened krews (v. 14, cf. 11). No he is not. He who is no conflict with the Scriptures are rightly divided. His judgment was that the Gentiles should be troubled with things that are Jewish, but should be warned against the pestils of heathenism, such as meant offered to idols, fornication and witchcraft. [II]. The Decision (v. 22-20)
The Mother church came to unanimous agreement and accepted the resolution offered by James. The apostles and elders not only sent a letter to the church, but took the wise precaution to send influential men with Paul and Barnabas to bear the same testimony in the church, the authority of the Judahish teachers (v. 24), and stated the method by which this decision had been reached (v. 25-27). They put the Holy Spirit first. IV. The Decision to the Church (v. 30-35). The church was called together to hear its reading brought rebelting. They proceeded the great missionary work.

The Sower, in the parable, cast his seed to the winds of heaven.

Only the seeds which reached the good ground had a chance to grow.
The modern advertiser does not strew his seed of salesmanship to the winds.
He plants it carefully in the "good ground"—in the places where because of favorable conditions it has a chance to bear a harvest of consumer results.
He uses newspaper advertising because through the newspapers he covers completely the markets which he knows, upon careful investigation, to be right places for his product to flourish.
