What we may here can do the dead man no good, but it should teach our son, virt, to always take such steps and precautions so as to make it impossible for firearms upon prisoners; and, if there is any place in the world where the police station is unlawful and unwarranted, it is at the Houston police station, where every colored man who usually proceeded to kill the black man is the unlawful one, being both brutal and barricated treatment of prisoners and citizens, particularly those of the colored man would not have objected to being photographed, as reported in the daily newspaper. But knowing how colored people are treated and humiliated at the municipal court, we should not whether this colored man was as crazy as charged when he objected to being photographed and thus the electric chair! It was indeed an unfortunate incident that such an affair will never be staged at our local police station again; for whatever the affair, such stunts give our city a kind of advertising that we do not relish and only upon our municipal securechion. NEW SUBSCRIPTION RATES: ANY MAN WHO IS 180 ENOUGH TO SHEED HIS BLOOD FOR HIS COUNTRY IS 180 ENOUGH TO BE GIVEN A SQUARE DEAL AFTERWARDS. NO MAN IS 18TITLED TO MORE AND NO MAN SHOULD RECEIVE LESS. — ROOSEVELT. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 1925 WELCOME, ODD FELLOWS AND RUTHITES! Houston is host this week to the forty-sixth and twenty-eighth annual sessions of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and Household of Ruth, whose deliberations and programs are being held in the commissional temple of the order at Louisiana Street and Prairie Avenue. The present grand lodge may be termed a "homecoming" event, for this city is the Mecca for practically 1000 Odd Fellows and Ruthites, many of whom have come to our city to see for the first time the magnificent temple which the order has erected here at a cost around $25,000, paying spot cash for the entire project. Numerically and financially, the fraternity of Odd Fellows and Ruths stands as one of the leading orders of the state, and its growth and strength during the last decade have been most reemergent. When the present grand master, H. G. Gore of Texarkana, assumed the reins of the order it was virtually in an insolvent condition and death claims were being paid in a slow and very unsatisfactory manner; but today the order boasts of resources and liquid assets in excess of $500,000, including the state temple here, and all claims are paid as soon as proof of death has been satisfied. The present grand master, who has literally given his life for the order, (am. incidentally, his race), was able to visualize the future; was able to draw a mental picture of a gigantic project and then has been permitted to live to see his dream, his anticipations, the name of Gore is indisoluble linked with the name of the Odd Fellows in Texas, and a person can not think of one without thinking of the other. He has been the order's fraternal Moses, who has led them thus far with unprecedented safety, from the land of involucry to the land of freedom, and from the land of violence to many a battlefield, yet always being victorious in the conflict. This order has among its membership some of the best men and women in the Lone Star commonwealth, who glory in the accomplishments of the present administration and the achievements of the fraternity. It has successful orders and business concerns, the Odd Fellows have been able to put over their big program because the order has had men capable of leading it and due to the fact that the membership was willing to follow such leadership. It matters not how able the leadership is or may be, unless the order has had men capable of respect of those they are essaying to lead, the leaders will meet with dismal failure and the followers will look askance at their every move and undertaking. The order should be proud of the progress it has made thus far, but it should never forget the men who helped to make this day a reality. The order will work with Green old lady, P. Starks and B. Y. Aycock, the latter crossing the Great Divide since the last grand lodge; the veteran, the original and only Dr. David Abner, Jr., whose life has been closely interwoven with that of the order and who marshaled the forces of the Household of Ruth until incapacitated by his feeble physical condition. The order will work with Green old lady, J. C. Frasier, and others of the present administration, have built an organization that is destined to radically alter the status of the black man and woman in Texas; for it is now showing by precept and example what can be accomplished through teamwork, progress and cooperation. It has been the widow's son so to speak, that has made possible this mammoth temple and solid, financial condition of the order; demonstrating in a concrete and tangible form our possibilities and potentialities, racially speaking, if we will follow and respect leadership, unite our forces and pool our means and the prosecution of one common cause and to attain one even. The Houston Informer Odd Fellows--- (Continued from First Page) "It has been previously stated that the contract price of the building was $120,000,000. The department of banking and insurance some changes were made. The steel changes were made. The department of the decorative stone was eliminated. These changes reduced the cost of the building to $110,000,000. This did not include the cost of elevators and ladders and instead, together with the cost of concrete, pedestrian walks and all other facilities and furnishings to the individual member has been small indeed, averaging $2.60 per person per month or about one per cent of one per cent per day for a portion of the financial burden has been light indeed for the present member. The future generation we leave no burden whatsoever except the responsibility to carry on the work of the greater height of friendship, love and truth. B. Y. Aycock. "Since our last meeting the debt was paid, our official family. This time he backed to our beloved B. Y. Aycock, and we are proud." "We mustmit Brother Aycock be cause of his unusual service to the orchard, and he is a hardy good fellowship. We can look back to the record of Brother Aycock with the order, and from that order we can see his self-service faith. For instance we all know, for years he went about duties that required him to walk the step and every effort must have been accomplished with a great degree of complaining, in fact hid his pains behind a smiling face in order that his associates would not suffer distress on his behalf." THE WEEK Why does any average Negro of our average inclination to hard work and is black and spend good time wishing roll out endless words to inform you were only white. I am reminded of a say you have done everything nothing." Texas Odd Fellow history is written, to Brother Aycock must be accorded a bright and shining page. Condition and Growth. "Finally the greatest factor to our success is the ever watchfulness of our parents, the allure of an allure Father, the ever wishing before us of the light from Calvary, the light of Christ, the support of a merciful providence, so we would have come to naught. It is God who has saved us, directed us, guided us, saved us, saved us, saved us, gave the thanks and the fruit of our efforts. Household of Ruth. We shall never be able to say to the much in praise of the women who make the Household of Ruth. We know they are one with us and we know they are one with us and we know they are of such unusual character as to elicit from me special mention, which never forgets a favorite, and I think all y average intelligence, average ability, average grit, benign the fact that he be were white? This Negro will that he be would be a great man if he be at he would be have at the head of her. He usually ends his wall with "but," instead of the Gaverson who for some cabinet officers field marshals, admire not to any Gaverson that a man who probably be a hod-carrier in yictrix or an old one one's own roadmap's rules and employing their own to occupy a higher position than he seem to feel that the col. a glut unassuming gentleman of an refined refined young woman from woman, above category—seem to feel that there and are advantage in being white. That way, if they could only be white their would be could over. They seem in the grip of the belief that blacked try escape. He cannot escape this black. "If you have done your best done less than your best you have done." Household of Ruth. Odd Fellows belong to that number. The Household of Ruth has bestowed them with the title of doing they favored themselves also, still that does not lessen the fact that they have hastened to the rescue of "When we were in the midst of the fight to establish ourselves upon the land of Ruth, we were in the midst of the Household of Ruth who flocked to our side and saved the day. When they were just as equal to the task, in every respect. May peace, happiness and future law to the Household and may the inmates of the present and future law to the holy history. C. J.
