The main thing an advertiser wants to do is to tell you plainly how and why his goods are worthy of your money, and how much they cost, because many things you see advertised are the things you buy and use in your regular daily life. By reading the advertisements, you can learn the names and read descriptions of the things that are best and most attractive.
But advertising teachers more than that. All advertisers try to make their advertisements themselves valuable to you.
A good many people have learned a whole lot about good goods, good clothes, ways to keep healthy, ways to enjoy the environment, ways to ground and looks well—they've learned all these things and many other things just by reading advertisements.
Read the advertisements right along, and you will learn a lot and will be helpful and valuable to you as you go through life.

CONFORMING TO LOCAL CONDITIONS!
Apropos of The Informer's editorial of last week dealing with and discussing the recent outbreak of and outrage by a trio of Houston Huns upon Dr. Richard H. Ward, youthful colored dentist, we have been reliably informed that a few local backboneless, spineless and pussyfooting Senegambians are endeavoring to cement the dentist for his original attitude when maintaining offices on Milam Street, when he demanded that a white youth, hireling of local dental supply house, accord proper respect and decent courtesy to a female patient in the race dentist's private office. The white man will make the supreme sacrifice, unhesitating, in demanding respect for and protecting his women, and this is one of the characteristics that all sane, sensible and many people must admire; and, since the white man accuses our group of imitating and copying after him, and, since our men treat all women, more or less, civilly, why does the white man object to our men demanding that all men treat our women with becoming deform? The courts have repeatedly held that a man has a right to protect his home or his office; and any man is perplexed within his time when he insists upon any man respecting the people in his office. There may be some difference of opinion on the method to be pursued in begetting this respect from those who frequent one's office, either on business or pleasure; but all men whose sanity is not questioned nor courage under suspicion, will agree that a man is a very poor man, and that he is unable in his office or place of business.
Our people (some of them) are too strict conformists to local conditions; being moss-back conservatives and two-legged jackasses when it comes to going the line of least resistance and staying in the beaten path of the typical ante-bellum darley" (employed as a reformer must concede that, as peaceful and law-abiding citizens, it is our duty to obey and abide by the laws written on the statute books of the city, county, state and republic; even if these laws are repulsive, unfair, objectionable, undemocratic and un-American, particularly as they relate to and affect our racial and political identity, we must resist the prohibition and inhibition are aimed directly at colored Americans. If we are opposed to such class legislation (and all red-blooded men, regardless of race, creed or color, are opposed to discriminatory laws), it does not follow that we should even attempt to employ force or violence in evading, disregarding or nullifying such laws, and we should not use such legal means to test the constitutionality and legality of such class legislation, and as certain if same will stand the light of thorough investigation, legal analysis and pitiless publicity. But law must not be confused with custom, which (custom), we admit, is often stronger and more powerful than the written law, and can only be changed by an enlightened public conscience; and can only be brought, about by the press, pulpit and pedagogue.
But that man is foolish and silly, indeed, who insists that since his father lived in a swamp and never enjoyed any of the modern comforts and conveniences of modern urban life, it is his indispensable duty to spend his days in a swamp also and never condone for more than a idiotistic sanitary and wholesome environment surrounding him.
China is a living example of too much conservatism and standpatism, and today, despite that nation's age, it is a mere sleeping giant; an elephant unconscious of his mighty power—all because the Chinman does not believe in leaving the beaten paths; he does not believe in the power of the man; he can conform somewhat to local conditions without completely stultifying their manhood and making mollycoddling cowards out of themselves.
Another thing: As long as a person finds that he can put anything over you or do you as he pleases, you can just rest assured that he will work overtime in this pastime; but when you have this same person to understand that you are not going to be victimized and that you will be willing tool; he will not be so quick in his efforts to "do you."
Races, being composed of men (generically speaking), are just like men, and there comes a time in the history of every man and race when he or it must assert himself and itself, not with carnal weapons per se, but by showing displeasure at certain practices and customs and having the world to know that times change and the people are changing. However, as long as the South maintains a double standard of citizenship—one for white citizens and another for colored people—colored man is going to be at a great disadvantage when it receives and being accorded civil and courteous treatment that bestowed upon other racial units in our polygyny and that was much in seeking to get this consideration and recognition, just that much longer will the may be delayed when he receive shall come.
When any person frows upon and condemns existing conditions and practices, he is called a radical, agitator and trouble-breaker, and often he is excoriated, anathematized and persecuted; but when he is contending for righteous principles and has the courage of his convictions, even though he often stands alone in his contention, he is often more engaged in a hopeless undertaking, for right will ultimately triumph.
"Right is right; since God is God;
And right the day must win;
To doubt would be disloyalty,
To falter would be sin."

VENEREAL DISEASES: DESTROY YERS OF HEALTH AND WEALTH.
By the United States Public Health Service.
III—THE COST IN HEALTH.
It is hard to measure the cost of venereal diseases in money. It is even more difficult to give the right amount of money to do what damage is to be defined in terms of individual and family health. In a recent article of this series, it was said that the money cost of venereal diseases is much higher in the country than in the country for every man, woman and child in the country. Any attempt to explain the cost, however, is hampered by the absence of such definite units of measurement. The cost of venereal diseases is not yet may safely be said that injury to health is the worst effect of syphilis and chancroid, for it is from this ill-health that the economic burden of these

the usual "Welcome" sign on the outskirts we took fresh courage, and realised which had been prepared and packed in a neat little box by Dr Shadowwyns in a little room, the occasion for some very serious thoughts every since we made our way at Larkin, as at many of the other places, we found the people, both in fact and in fact, pleasant. Every white man took our age and really thought we were youthful for a little frock; we took our age and really thought we were youthful for a little frock; we took our age and really thought "Which way you boys going?" We forgot to mention that before we left, we gradually disappeared and we were not hitting that red hairway at about 10am, leaving the "bummy bumps", as it was we were leaving the "bummy bumps", as it was we wasn't using the real Sunday school emd, especially during the extra hard
After a short rest of about 40 minutes we stepped on the starter and hit the fall-off aid we say wildly. Well trail is what we meant, for we have now led the red highway, and are now set over a wilderness of tall oak and much taller pines. Of course we expended to get lost and as always we look for your army find; we proceeded to get lost six times in 60 minutes, and whereas we had been clipping off from 30 to 40 per

THE FIRST WOMEN TO BE ELECTED TO THE HOUSE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
The Informer is in receipt of a copy of a rectal number of the Amherst College in, which appears a program of the Amherst College, in which appears a program of a score of America's best colored sorran contest for grand opera. From the reading of the program one glooms that the Amherst News, a colored friend, proposes to do three colorful friends, proposes to do three colorful friends, proposes to do three colorful friends, one of which is the annual Negro, one of which is the organization of a grand opera company with this project. On the program applauded more than 200 people, whom Edward Ferrant-Fountain, the noted grand opera director, will present for this final audition. Each contest ant had his own accompanist, and it was his son, Lion's share of honors in this particular feature, in that Mies Ernestine Jescino Grant was the accompanist. hour it took in just 10 minutes so no one had decided to right about face and return to Milan street, we found the big long seeking, hiding down behind two big oak trees—the city was Gary—not too far from the city, we really don't know yet whether
We push on through the ruins to meet the one we once wished but now tamed Trinity river, on, on through the once wicked but now tamed log cabins surrounded by decaying buildings, about to meet the second Sunday in August, and we find the kirphein at home; we find no nobody at home; everybody at the church, of course, everywhere; everybody at the second Sunday in August, everybody from everywhere. We finally pulled out on our last lap, which we, after much inquiry, found about 8 o'clock. Here we found our old parents, our old brothers, our old parents in their youth. We open one night and part of next day's sleep had kid run rabbits, water stealments and a patch. We drank from the same old well that has supplied our ancestors to the cemetery where lay the members of the family who have passed over.
Monday morning we liked out for Wakim and Marshall; at both places we met a couple of students seen for a quarter of a century. At Marshall we put our feet on Bishop McKenna, who was a teacher of a 39 year. At Bishop we had a long chat with President Maxon—our first time—and were favorably invited to the Burch, Joe Johnson and Miss Eugene Cobb. Houstonians are students of the advantage of the opportunity to see the wonderful equipment of this great college and the joy of being a pupil is a thing of great beauty. After

Y. W. C. A. NOTES
The Y. M. C. A. ended a very successful year. Our August 14 meeting was impressive. We expressed our hope that we carried membership cards the past year, which are very anxious that we extend a hearty invitation to both old and young men to become members of both mental and physical recreation, and dominate, which offer mental development. We have punching bags, box sets, and other physical development. We endure the use of its recreation rooms at a meeting place. We endure the use of its recreation rooms at a meeting place.
