Standard Life Sale Pure Fabrication WHITE YOUTH ATTACKS RACE GIRL HOME EDITION VOL. VII Stanc WHIT THE MIRROR By C. F. RICHARDSON. PRAIRIE VIEW SITUATION. While Dr. Osborne did not measure up to all requirements for the principalship of an institution of learning like P.V., he was largely victimized, maligned and misrepresented by a gang of scandal-mongers, school policiers, traducers, characters, and others. He was far from a single, these beards and devilish designers, and these fiends had done their dirty, diabolical and dastardly work merely with the hope of bringing about Dr. Osborne's dismissal and the tendering of the post to their San Antonio "master mind," who had promised his allies, confederates and comrades that they would be "taken care of" when he came into "possession of the kingdom." As a first-class history of this state school, this all the worst and most disgraceful "nigger mess" the institution has suffered and endured, and it is to be regretted that the board members, governor and leading white citizens were not put wise to this conspiracy and unholy alliance before the movement made such headway and gained so many adherents, supporters, followers and devotees. As long as Prairie View is tied to this political and some other school in this state, and the principalship is a political pawn, we can look for repetitions of this latest fiasco. Several Houston teachers and educators have hurled their hats into the ring for the principalship of P.V., it is stated; but only one of the lot is of principalship calibre and his age and fallipg health seriously handicap him for the position, for this job calls for a man not only of strong mind, but of a man who is not good at making a soul, and one who can absorb all kinds of shocks, jabs, jibes and knocks; for if he can get over these things and survive, he will never look the same nor last long. NEW ORLEANS HERALD The Mirror is in receipt of Vol. I, No. 1 of the New Orleans Herald, an eight-page, well-printed paper, which begins regular publication in the Crescent City this week. C. C. DeJole, president of the Unity Insurance Company, is the publisher, and Prof. O. C. W. Taylor is editor. The Herald has the best wishes of this publication for success in a field where the lack of a paper has been a serious reflection on the large colored population. The Houston Informer feels it is entitled to a bit of credit for the appearance at this time of its new contemporary. For several months this paper has been furnishing the people THE HOUSTON INFORMER Deal Never Put Over With White Owners By St. Louis Group St. Louis Underwriters Corporation Failed to Live Up to Name-Long on Talk But Shon, on "Long Green" Story of Sale Proved to Be Premature, False Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 24. Officials of the Southern Insurance Company of this city officially denied reports of being from St. Louis to the effect that the Standard Life Insurance Company, recently purchased by the Southern Life Insurance Company, has been found to be a group of St. Louis business men. According to revelations made by an agent of the Southern Life Insurance Company in Atlanta such a sale had been in negotiation for some time but to date had failed to materialize. The agent did not deny that the sale had been not consegne to the new company. The St. Louis capitalist John Shon, a family member who has been a group of St. Louis business men, was even an tota of truth in the assertion that the deal had been successfully consummated. The disclosure comes as so great as to the fact that the deal was a group of St. Louis, passing surprise to men close to the personnel of the company, who were not to be released as having bought Standard Life. As was pointed out, the company had to be released as the group of the company assets of the group, available for investment purposes in floating such a group. The company has been also to exceed more than $100,000, the name of Aaron Malone, perhaps the whole name of the company. St. Louis has been, as a group of St. Louis business men in St. Louis, was one of the reptories of the people from the roster of the people's Finance Corporation, another source of St. Louis wealth, numbering the deal. The company has been the most important to any republican group. When this became apparent, shroved in the name of the "headline" edition of the company's edition, the story without adding the word "report" The price asked $12 on every 15 month of business written and in force. STAMPS IN CITY FOR VICTORY LIFE FINE TERRITORY J. E. Stamps, assistant general manager of the Victory Life Insurance Company, Chicago, Ill., who has been in Texas looking over the insurance territory and appointing an agency force, was a Houston visitor during the first year of his service. Mr. Stamps considers Texas a very fertile and virgin insurance field, and his company, which has been authorized to do business in this state, plans an intensive campaign in the Lone Star commonwealth. He states that the Victory Life, of which Anthony Overton, former Texan, is president, has a very good need and requirement of the race. Before joining the Victory Life's official family, Mr. Stamps was connected with another colored insurance company, relinquishing a professorship at Prairie View State College to enter the Insurance field, and he is rated as one of the best insurance managers in the United States. At present Herbert "Jerry" Lott and Felix C. Thurmond, both former secretaries of the local Y. M. C. A., are in charge of the Houston territory for the Victory Life. of New Orleans with a page of news each week that for real news would be hard to beat. Our New Orleans page is the best of the best out of town correspondence appearing in any of our race papers. We are certain that a careful business man like Brother Defoe has been impressed with what fertile news field New Orleans is, by reading The Houston Informer, and, if we have served to show what a reflection it is on New Orleans to have to depend on the future of the country to bring to it the real news of its folks, we feel we have done some good. New Orleans should welcome its home paper! South's Greatest Weekly Newspaper HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1925 Dr. Jackson of St. Louis, passing through Chicago, on route to Atlanta, met the audience at the Iowa College, here while here addressed himself to the audiences as president of the company. He made credence in view of the above facts, is placed in the doctor's titled position. Bill Open to Buyers. As the time the Southern Life Insurance Company purchased Standard Life, it was stipulated that Standard Life was to be sold back to any reputable group of insurance companies. The company asked for it, within the next ten years its sale to the Nashville. The price asked for $12 on every $1,000 worth of business written and printed. P. Retnins Criminal Lawyer to Defend Dr. Sweet and Family for Repulsing Detroit Mob With Hot Lead. Special To The Informer. New York City.—The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has announced that negotiations are underway with an eminent white lawyer, one of the most active members of the state of Michigan, whom it is, hoped to retain for the defense of Dr. Q. H. Sweet and the ten other people accused of murder for defending Dr. Sweet's home from a mob. The defense of Dr. Sweet, his wife, has been announced, after the colored people has been entrusted to the N. A. A. C. P. and no pains will be spared in behalf of these eleven Noy-foes, now held in charges of murder. The N. A. A. C. P. reports dispatches to the N. A. A. C. P. for the defendant, appeared before Judge Faust on Tuesday, at 22, where effort was made to have them released under bail. Judge Faust declined to admit the case. The N. A. A. C. P. is interested in the question of bail, this time before another judge, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26. In connection with the case, Wal-toe, the Assistant Assistant secretary of the N. A. A. C. P., made the following statement: "The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People regained the case in the case of the mostle co-defendants as one of the most important it has ever attempted to defend. Those people in defending Dr. Sweet's home were standing for the right of the Negro to choose the case. The N. A. A. C. P. is also to live there unmolested. We can expect such cases to increase until the U. S. Supreme Court in Washington, in the case now carried there by the Court of the United States, is being held in the N. A. A. C. P. for the case of the Negro to fix his home exactly as do all other American citizens." MASKED TERROR STILL AT LARGE DESPITE ARREST Fik Students Visited bi "Nashville's Celebrated "Midnight Terror." Though Houston Black is in Jail for Depredations. (By Associated Negro Press.) Nashville, Tenn.—The "midnight terror" who has caused the citizens of Nashville to live in constant horror for the entire summer, came very close to telling me that he wrote a letter to the Nashville Tennessee scouting the police force of Nashville as "the bumiest I ever saw." Their last grand blunder was in the arrest of a colored man on whom they attempted to kill him. The series of outrages committed, only to learn that the "midnight terror" had committed another attack after the arrest of Henry Holt, accused him of murdering natural vultures, the man entered the dormitory of Fisk University and the one of the students who sat in the room, searching the mattes, for valuables. When the girl screamed, the man ran out and searched the mattes, for valuables. This girl and the many white women who have been visited by the man who sat in the room, searched the mattes, for a white man black up. Certain of the stories concerning the man who sat in the room, searched the mattes, for the that no color man has any connection with the invaders. In one interview, the attacker attested that he lay in the bed beside her husband and out the husband's threat in the encounter; then the little daughter of Elmer Pierce (white) was corroded in a room of scorpion scaffolding, the room invaded by the man who sat in the bed and talked like a white man, although his face was obviously contorted. On another occasion he tiled a踢 over his face to serve as a mask, and he was then asked to contour of his face imprinted by the blacking used to disguise his mouth. The blacking used to custody by Nathvili police, denies that he the notorious murderer, he was taken into custody. He is then into a home; however, his guilt is not known. He is also rather known as "pick up" coloured men, although the evidence is circumstantial; to the extent of being ridiculous. BRILLIANT OBERLIN PIANIST OPENS STUDIO The N. Y. A. Not long ago Nate Siegel was a spectator at a fight in which his stabmate was killed. In the course of the battle Siegel relied an instruction to Reed, which, being a spectator, would seem to be a bad thing. Spectators are continually doing this. Yet Siegel drew an indefinite suspension. The fates of baseball are dicke and strange. They have devious ways their wonders to perform. Take the case the Yankees, the best-hatted pitcher, and Earl Combe of the Yankees, outfielder, both offered both LOUville club and the Louisville club and Yankees. Miller Hurlers was after new pitching talent and was that he wasn't greatly exceeded by Combe, who as a left-handed pitcher did not have the right national. "We are overworked with left-handed batters right now," said Hurlers. "What we need of a right-handed pitcher." The Yankees thought they had Dean, but the Gians raised the ante and lained the pitcher. The Yankees had Dean, but the Yankees had a game of financial rivalry, which then was rampant between the local Brewers' heirs where the fickle fates come in. Combe is one of the outstanding American league, the best-beloved young baseball player. Dean Dairy blown to develop into a winner for John McGraw and justify why he was purchased $400,000 made when he was purchased. But the left-handed batting outfielder who wasn't wanted so much by Haggins in January, 1924, already has a lot of interest in playing for him, and in 1928 should be one of the most interesting players in the mid-40s. One of Mack's Stars The photograph shows Bishop, second baseman of the Philadelphia Athletics, considered the best second baseman since Connie Mack traced Eddie Collins to the Chicago White Sox. Quinn on Waiver Route Recently the Boston Red Sox asked for waivers on the veteran spitball pitcher, Jack Quinn. The two leading clubs, Washington and Philadelphia, refused to waive their rights to the player, he went to Philadelphia, as *Washington* was in the lead when walters were added to the team. He was the last near champion with pennant chances. At the time walters were requested to play against any other Boston pitcher, seven. The collapses of the Red Box, however, has convinced the owners and staff of the club that a result with youngsters. For that reason, they did not fit in with plans of the club. Two Pitchers Give One Pass to Two Batters Two batters received from two pitchers one base on the bats in the eight inning, the other in the seventh. The between the Yankas and Senators. It was thus wise. With one down, one O'Neill was sent to pitch in the seventh inning wide pitches from Rustieker, wheapon Manager Harris Rustieker Dutch and called in Marbury. The pitcher countered by sending Schang to the plate to finish O'Neill's turn at bat. Schang drew two had one, which made four balls in the ninth inning. Marbury, being the pitcher to finish this act of generosity, was charged with the issuance of the free pitching fee for 25 per cent responsible for it. The better plan is to put aside any uncertainty—let us do the worrying—while you pay the premiums on one or more of our CHILDREN'S ENDOWMENT POLICIES. You can assure yourself of the necessary funds now, without more uncertainty, with which to start your boy or girl safely along through the critical days after school is over, into lives of usefulness, and happiness, by securing one of our endowment policies to mature about the time they will be needing the money most. If you are planning to send your boy or girl through college, or through one of the professional schools, your best chance to assure yourself of attaining this end is to insure their lives with our endowment policies. The younger the child, the better is your opportunity. We insure children from birth and onward. When the child is insured before school days begin, the premium is lower and the policy matures earlier. You will find our rates for these policies particularly attractive. The parent who invests heavily, as is now necessary, in the education of his children, uses good judgment to protect himself and the child against the risk involved in this investment. He secures life insurance on the individuals concerned. If the child is to be sent through college or a professional school, the parent uses good judgment only when he takes more life insurance on his boy to protect himself against the greater risk involved, on himself, to assure himself and the child that no chance happening can defeat the desired end. You may have heard the story of the boy who became interested in chemistry in High School. He worked in a drug store in the afternoons and summers. His parents denied themselves all the little luxuries for them, but they thought all that they were asked of them were equally proud when he began work at the university in the school of pharmacy. Things went well until his last year, then the father died. In a great many families the tragedy might have been fatal to all their hopes. In this instance, the thoughtfulness of the parents helped them to realize that they deserved a cherished life. The father had insured himself, and them, against this fatality. The money from the life insurance company helped the boy establish his own drug store, and the mother, with his assistance, continued the home in the usual comfortable circumstances. Have you sufficiently insured the hopes of your family? HOME OFFICE: OVERTON BUILDING 3621 So. State Street, Chicago Joseph, Vice Pres. & Gen. Mgr. Anthony Ow Joseph, Vice Pres. & Gen. Mgr. The program in its entirety was interesting with Professors A. E. Perkins and H. C. Heidelberg delivering the principal addresses. Prof. Perkins, who enjoys more than a local reputation, has a wide-range of impression on his bearers as he so eloquently and forcefully emphasized the importance of men doing things worth while in contributing to the uplift of mankind and making the world better. He has updated the approach of knowledge, he illuminated and illustrated his remarks with timely examples from the Book of Books. Paying a fine tribute to the ordinary men, termed by him the rank and file, he has been used that would be the world depends finally for the success of all programs for advancement. Prof. Heidelberg, in his address, declared it was a fallacy for parents to concentrate all their efforts on the work of the church. He said, "mothers and fathers should show more interest in the training and education of the boys for prepared and trained young men, inculcated with high ideals and sound morals and good to guide the destiny of the race and throw protection around the girls." Jas, Lewis, Jr., and several other speakers talking extemporaneously expressed many fine ideas, indicating the same importance of the meetings and full understanding. Prof. Charles played Mendelson's "Spring Song," he gave a song about the life of a slave, a xaphone and Messar. Tho. Phillips and Jas. Hamilton each sang a solo. The students sang, responding to several encores. Master of Ceremonies McKenzie, at the beginning of the program introduce the purpose and history of the occasion, telling of the idea of the meeting having been developed in the Tuition Room. The gentleman termed the returning folks "silk and satin niggers." The Item, in commenting on the matter, calls attention to the sadly neglected conditions of housing on the plantations. This is one of the minor things that Negroes to leave in the South, it mentions wages and says that these are being increased. This is true. But the colored people are leaving the South, and have left, for these and many other reasons. The bigger reason for this is the attitude of the average South African colored people. Not that he is not kind and charitable to the few Negroes he knows and likes, but that he constantly opposes the Negroes in the things the colored man feels are essential to his progress and his safety. The more he will give to the Negroes, the more will agree that the Negro is entitled to adequate facilities and the protection of the law. But the colored man gets neither, though there is a marked improvement in bestowing both, the colored man and the Negroes the attitude in the South, which will give to him the ballot, (with any restraints impartially applied) through which he can to a certain degree, protect himself from the demagogues and Negro-haiters. The sensible and thinking Negro does not contend that the colored man is not a Negro, but suffers, but he does know that it will go a long ways toward accomplishing this result. And when we say the sensible and thinking Negro, we do not want the colored man and those most advanced in education. The average ordinary every-day Negro has a better conception of governmental affairs than most white people will credit him with having. The Negro with a fair education, and there are thousands of these now, will compare favorably with the average colored man. The work of the inter-racial committees and movements looking forward to co-operation between the races, has helped to better conditions but invariably the individuals, white and colored, have been excluded from the group's roar's heart and mind. The white men, most of the time, feel that they can not go against the thought of the mass of Southerners who are determined that the colored man should have no power in the decision-making process. Invariably conclude that it is better to obtain agreement upon those things upon which the white man will concede than it is to force the issue on matters upon which there is almost certain. The Negro who has gone, is going, and is staying North, is not of the "silk and satin" type. He wants fair wages for his labor; he wants adequate school facilities for his children; he wants protection for himself and family; and he wants a voice for the African-American community in real American censure him? Can any Christian condemn him? ST. JAMES A. M. E. CHURCH PLANS BIG REVIVAL Holy Communion will be celebrated at St. James A. M. E. Church, Sunday, October 4. At the eleven o'clock services Rev. N. GOLDEN TEXT. -For Him we live, love, and have our being: Atheus 14:15. PRIMARY TOPIC: Paul Tells the JUNIOR TOPIC: Paul Preaches on King David. IMPREMIDATE AND SENIOR TOPIC: God the Father of All Mankind. TRUE AND FALSE TOPIC: True and False Ideas of God. I. The idolatry of the Athenians (v. 10). was the intellectual home of the world at that time, the home of the world's eloquence and philosophy. Paul's spirit was stirred and philosophy. Paul's spirit was stirred the city who lived to idolatry. II. Paul Digging With the Athenians (v. 11). In the city (v. 17A). True to his usual custom, he entered into earnest argument with the 2. In the Market Place (vv. 17b-21). From the Jews he从来知道 material matters. He here came into touch with the Epicurean and Stoic philosophews. The formers were athletic materials. He here gave them up to seminal indigences since they rejected the idea of a future judgment. The latter were instructed to know what he preached, preaching of Paul they desired to know what new doctrine he preached, he might speak to them where he might speak to them of his new doctrine. They inquired as to what this "babble" might say. Since he knew what he preached, he either in telling or hearing some new thing, they were willing to listen to Paul. The word "babble" means litter. Paul to be a globe-roter who had gathered up seeds of truth here and there from the earth, somewhat like the interests in talking about that which he knew. Paul's Address on Mary Hill (vv. 22-81). 1. The introduction (vv. 22-23). He did not accuse them of superstition, but as in the Revised Version, he introduces his discourse in a courteous and conciliatory manner, stating that he perceived that they were very religious. This he explains by saying that as he was viewing their city he beheld an altar with an inscription to the unknown god. This was his point of contact. He proceeded at once to connect it with the idea of the living God, implying that this altar had been erected to Him. 2. The Body of His Discourse (vv. 24-31). (1) A Declaration Concerning God (v. 24-25). a. He created the material universe (v. 24). This was a direct blow at the philosophy of both the Epicreans and the Spices. b. His Spirituality and Immensity (vv. 24-25). He is not worshiped with men's hands as though He needs anything neither is He confined by any sort of a religious temple. Being essentially spiritual, He demands heart service, and being transcendent, above all, He is not confined to earthly temples. c. His Active Providence (v. 25). He gives existence, bestows needed gifts, and as sovereign, directs all things. (2) A Declaration Concerning Man (vv. 25-31). a. This was a blow at the foolish Athenian pride which supposed that the prophet he preformed this proposition he preformed from his own literature (v. 28), of his place by the sovereign purpose of God (v. 29). c. Men should God (v. 27). g. Men should the our needs, and ordering that the even affairs of the nations should move men to see and seek God (v. 31). h. Obligation to Repent (v. 39, 31). This was his supreme message. i. Results of Paul's Praising (v. 39). 1. Some Mocked (x: 32). This is even the case today. Men and women will mock the presacher who preaches a judgment to come. Many do not mock, but they heatsate to accept and act upon the urgency of the message. [v. 34]. B. some Believe (v. 19). Wherever the gospel is preached there are some who believe and are saved. As Men Succeed Men succeed in proportion to the fifty percent of their views and the invincibility of the man. A man's quitting point, the place where he gives up, turns, he can mean Children's Pravera Jesus loves to hear the earnest prayer of a little boy or girl more than He does a long hypocritical prayer of a big preacher—dogful The bureau of American ethnology says the mounds in the Mississippi valley were generally foundations of Native American sites in some instances have been burial tumuli. The school is also seeking training in it; a nurse to look after the health of Newborn children has been trained, and the direction of the health office of the system; the minor improves the health of the teachers in the salaries of teachers and the addition of several teachers have been The board should see to it that no peanut politician or pseudo-educator is selected and elected as the titular head of this state school; for the elevation of any such man to the principalship will prove a calamity to this institution of learning and seriously retard the progress of negro education in the Lone Star state for generations to come. The Informer still hold to its original position as expressed in last week's issue, that the colored citizens of Texas, in some concerted manner, should confer with the board, either collectively or individually, and make known to these men the race of the people of Texas. The Informer will View State College; but this paper fears that the board is going to experience some difficulty in getting the right kind of a man for the post, due to the political complexion of the situation. However. The Informer is very anxious that the next principal of Prairie View be a man that will reflect credit upon the institution. The Informer will seek the deacers; and to this end it is hoped that the board will take ample time before making a final decision in the matter. Some of these improvements, the Express fees, are the direct result of the school's efforts to improve the care early last year by a group of interested citizens. That petition set forth in detail the actual conditions required to recommend certain improvements which seemed necessary. The school also asked the Darrell school were among the things recommended. This is as it is, and the school is just such interest in their schools and they should present their cases in such confidence. The history of Dallas proves that its directing heads, in the early 1980s, were interested in the improvement of conditions as they affect the whole public for needed things. IT IS ENTIRELY DIFFERENT IN HOUSTON! Elsewhere in this issue of The Informer appears an editorial from last week's issue of the Dallas Express, which discusses recent improvements made in the public schools of Dallas, and the part the colored citizens of that city played in petitioning the board for these and other considerations and improvements. The attitude of the colored citizens of Dallas in this respect is entirely different from the position assumed by the colored citizens of Houston, as our people seem to think it a wanton and matricious criminal act to ask the school board or city council for anything, notwithstanding the crying need and the fact that all of us are taxpaying citizens of this school district and municipality. ANY MAN WHO IS GOOD ENOUGH TO SHEID HIS BLOOD FOR HIS COUNTRY IS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE GIVEN A SQUARE DEAL AFTERWARDS, NO MAN IS ENTITLED TO MORE AND NO MAN @HOULD RECEIVE LESS. ROOSEVELT. The success of this petition as far as the improvements are indicated can be seen by the continuation of the efforts of the group of interested citizens and if the group is active, the active interest of those who had no part in the framing and presentation of the petition will also the efforts of these citizens should not cease until all of the efforts are made. Only once in the last two decades have the colored citizens of Houston ever sent a representative committee before the school board head, and, because they did not get what was anticipated (as the proposed bond issue at that time was defeated because of petty politics), it appears that they have decided to sit suplyen and by wait for the leavings and scrapings, or do without these and school buildings, sanitary conditions around the schools and other improvements so necessary in modern public school systems. HQUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1925 SELECTING PRAIRIE VIEW'S NEXT PRINCIPAL! In electing and selecting the new principal of Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College, the board of directors will do well to give the matter careful and deliberate consideration and endeavor to place at the head of this state institution of learning for colored youths, some outstanding and eminent educator who measures up fully to this high office and its requirements. For some reasons not made clear, the new school project for Oak Cliff was not made. That project is in a badly needed as are all other schools, not has not been made known. That project is in a badly needed as are all other schools, not has not been made known. That project is in a badly needed as are all other schools, not has not been made known. Let the citizens still think in terms of their schools. Let them study their needs. Let them grow them. Let them grow them. Let that it is the duty of the state and civil governments to provide for them of him a profitable citizen. The best in education is the right of every New child along with all the others. Then, what is worse and more reprehensible in the Houston species Africanus, if any black man has the temerity, backbone, hardhair and nerve to make some demands for the race along this and other lines, these so-called race leaders—who are in real danger—have to be more aggressive, more typical "Uncle Toms," and who are too internally scared, cowardly, selfish, and self-centered to ask the school board or city council for anything—will run to "de white fokes" and endeavor to read manly, free-thinking and courageous black man out of the colored race, and to try to show their "white friends" that they are not a threat to the racial strife and is a constant menace to the community. It is quite natural that the woods will be full of aspirants and candidates, but the board should exercise extreme care and precaution to see that the wrong man does not get the principalship of this school. Prairie View is a composite institution of learning, belong to the colored race what the Agricultural and Mechanical College, University of Texas, the various normal and technological schools, and the white race what the state government, see in the white race of this state and section. The old idea that all pimps and stool-pigeons are of the so-called low type is erroneous, for in Houston most of our pimps, stool-pigeons, sycophants, lackeys and mannikins are members of the "upper-crust"(*?) and they will say anything about their race to a member of some other race or undertake to do anything to a member of their own race, (even if said person is a member of the same race) or to be a member of the tone and hifalting" pimp in various other capacities) just to be called a "good nigger" by some member of another race. In other words, to select a man as principal of Prinie View merely because of his work in one particular branch of the educational field, is hardly calculated to place and maintain the school on the high standard of symmetrical education. C. C. PENN TAKES OVER MIMS REALTY BUSINESS On account of the growing business of the Retrieve Oil Corporation, with which I am connected, I have made an arrangement with Mr. C. C. Penn of this city, who has recently entered the real estate field, to take over all my real estate, loan and building activities. Mr. Penn is a young man of sterling ability and of known honesty and integrity, and I commend him to my friends, both white and colored. He is thoroughly trustworthy and will attend to any matter left to him with fidelity and diligence. Mr. Penn has moved his office from 221 Taborian building, 807 Prairie Avenue, to office space in our quarters at suite 419. Odd Fellows Temple, phone Preston 4312. He will also have my assistance and direction in every way possible. The Informer knows but few men in and of this state capable to fill this position, among whom are Dr. J. R. E. Lee, principal Agricultural and Mechanical College, Tallahassee, Florida; Prof A. E. Holland, principal colored high school at Wichita Falls, Texas; Prof J. J. Rhoads, principal Booker T. Washington high school, Dallas, Texas. We know plenty of "big Negroes" in Houston—men high in the educational, fraternal, religious, social and civic life of the community and state—who would go to any length to "do" or "receive the commendation and laudation from men of other races. Dr. Lee is a native Texan was educated at Bishop College, Dr. Lee is a native Texan was educated at Bishop College, relinquishing his work at Bishop to assume charge of the academic department of Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama, the late Dr. Booker T. Washington over a long stretch of years. It is this lik of human jackasses, who never take the initiative themselves in matters of racial and public weal—who are always in the minority and who are not able to have an opinion and give expression to same either by word or action—that is retarding our racial cause in Houston, and virtually making it well nigh impossible for the race to get its just deserts from the board of education, city fathers and other leading Leaving Tunkegue Dr. Lee was principal of the Lincoln high which became the field secretary, for the National Urban League, which (Signed) H. L. MIMS. 419 Odd Fellows Temple Responding to the call of his first love, education, he accepted the principalship of the state school of Florida last year, and is now serving his second term as head of the institution of learning for the colored youths of the Everglades state. The Informer has repeatedly suggested and advised our people in the past to be more vigilant in their committee to those in official authority and make known our needs and desires, instead of always sitting around and indulging in our chief pastime—singing the blues and hymns of lamenta- BACK ON JOB BACK ON JOB Dr. Lee is eminently qualified for the principalship of Prairie and the school, being a native son and one of the race's most distinguished educators, disciplinarians, and schoolmen, his appointment and acceptance of the position would meet almost universal approval. A. E. These spineless and backboneless Houston bipeds of color will be judged on the basis of their audacious as to presents a petition to the board of education of that city, and will even dare to contend that these improvements are not in the schools without resorting to such radical and "upplush" methods. In Texas two of the most outstanding educators, disciplinarians, executives and schoolmen, are Professors Holland and Rhoads, the latter being the younger of the lot; but both are capable and well-prepared men; intellectually, physically and morally qualified to increase the prestige and influence of Prairie and direct and guide its activities in an able and massive manner. These same cowardly and cringing colored Houstouhans—many of them men above want and some holding offices of trust, power and influence among their own people—will possibly criticise the Dallas Express, Editor Rice and Manager Starks for making any of their own decisions in the legislatures and the improvements they were able to get in their public school system by petitioning the school board of their city! For a number of years Prof. Holland taught at Bishop College the alma matter, as well as in the public schools of Texas; having served as principal of the high schools at Willis, Palestine and now at Wichita Falls. The question has often been推翻ed to The Informer, "when will the team in Houston get together and work together with the common good." Prof. Rhonda, who has done post-work at Yale University, where he won honors, is proving himself to be one of the most efficient and proficient disciplinarians, educators and school teachers. Rhonda is also an educator and is about the highest salaried colored principal in Texas. Our answer is, "The Negroes of Houston will get together and work together for their common good when we have had quite a number of funerals and have consigned most of these cowardly crying pimps, stool-pigeons, stool-pussytoes to their graves."[1] Prof. Rhoads is a native of Marshall, Texas, where he attended the public schools and later took his degree from Bishop College. He engaged in Y. M. C. A. a week at Tuskegee Institute during his time at the university and then back to Texas to take charge of the colored high school at Jalapene. The Informer again wishes to congratulate the colored citizens of Dallas, as well as the Dallas Express, for performing their holden duty in this respect; while this paper also desires to thank the board of education of that city for the interest manifested in the colored public schools and the recognition and appreciation of red-blooded and upstanding colored citizens of that metropolis. DR. L. M. MITCHELL, dentist, with D. R. L. M. MITCHELL, dentist, P. bilingual, has his dental practice after an absence from his of lice since August 4, to serious lice and is now back on the job, and cobly invites all former patients and his family to visit him a hivt. His office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and he offers telephone phone. Perhaps there is no member of our race in Texas or the South better qualified for the principalship of Prairie View than the governor of Texas, who is also the mayor, whether he or the other two men would consent, or even consider having their present posts for one where petty politics and designing politicians make the tenure of the principal uncertain, or having the governor make every change at state administration, often with nothing but a message. As for the so-called Negro leaders of Houston and their agitation and contention for improvements in our public schools—since "there ain't no sech animal"—let us look to the Lord and be dismissed. Selab. INFORMOGRAMS if mosquitoes will persist in attending all the church services, some way ought to be devised whereby they can be sprayed on all other members and all other attendants and let our ankles and those of the greater sex severely alone. Such men as the governor of Mississippi and others who have so scarcely denounced the lynchers of the South should be very careful or they could be treated with a "Niger Lover" tacked onto their cognomen, and "give a dog a bad name, etc." Men in high political positions should be very careful how they attack the established customs of their particular sections. The Pat M. Nefl merit penitentiary fame for the prison commission owing to a tendency of the honor inmate had to get returning to. From now on guards will see that the prisoners' Sunday school will be on Sunday and no another bubble is "busted." Another great digester to our national defense; this a national submarine there no safe branch of our national defense. We once thought the infantry was easy, but that was before the defiant in-or out of the army is safe. Night schools open next week, and an opportunity is thus opened to every student to get the rudiments at least of a school he would have got some schooling had he been given the chance, must be a New Jersey major recently, recognised his position as head of the city government to take a job as police officer, he must be a native of old Ireland. Jim Merriwether, during the hot weather, with the mercury at 150 degrees in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with Hattiesburg wurg used him to Dowling street easily. In connection with the opening of the night schools next Monday, our students will be told that the taxpayers of Houston paid their money for educational aid by those who educate them, by those who education. We shall have the opportunity to see how he built himself water. It so often happens that he builds up to the standard set by his bain potting water. It so often happens that he entirely too big and cumbersome for the kit to wear; thus we shall watch man's career with much interest. We witnessed a very sensible man caretaker who came to the house in that the word "obey" was omitted from the pledge required of children in the question, "Do you promise to bring children into the world and make them obey" in place of the usual one. We never seen Judge J. C.
