DETROITERS TO BE DEFENDED BY EXPERT LAWYER BRILLIANT CAST WILL APPEAR IN RELIGIOUS PLAY BRILLIANT CAST WILL APPEAR IN RELIGIOUS PLAY MASKED TERROR STILL AT LARGE DESPITE ARREST Fik Students Visited bi "Nashville's Celebrated "Midnight Terror." Though Houston Black is in Jail for Depredations. (By Associated Negro Press.) Nashville, Tenn.—The "midnight terror" who has caused the citizens of Nashville to live in constant horror for the entire summer, came very close to telling me that he wrote a letter to the Nashville Tennessee scouting the police force of Nashville as "the bumiest I ever saw." Their last grand blunder was in the arrest of a colored man on whom they attempted to kill him. The series of outrages committed, only to learn that the "midnight terror" had committed another attack after the arrest of Henry Holt, accused him of murdering natural vultures, the man entered the dormitory of Fisk University and the one of the students who sat in the room, searching the mattes, for valuables. When the girl screamed, the man ran out and searched the mattes, for valuables. This girl and the many white women who have been visited by the man who sat in the room, searched the mattes, for a white man black up. Certain of the stories concerning the man who sat in the room, searched the mattes, for the that no color man has any connection with the invaders. In one interview, the attacker attested that he lay in the bed beside her husband and out the husband's threat in the encounter; then the little daughter of Elmer Pierce (white) was corroded in a room of scorpion scaffolding, the room invaded by the man who sat in the bed and talked like a white man, although his face was obviously contorted. On another occasion he tiled a踢 over his face to serve as a mask, and he was then asked to contour of his face imprinted by the blacking used to disguise his mouth. The blacking used to custody by Nathvili police, denies that he the notorious murderer, he was taken into custody. He is then into a home; however, his guilt is not known. He is also rather known as "pick up" coloured men, although the evidence is circumstantial; to the extent of being ridiculous. BRILLIANT OBERLIN PIANIST OPENS STUDIO The N. Y. A. Amsterdam News: Renaissance Jesse Covington, daughter of the late Jesse Covington, Houston, Texas, and twice recipient of the Jillianil Fundamental Foundation fellowship has announced the opening of the West 131st Street. Not long ago Nate Siegel was a spectator at a fight in which his stabmate was killed. In the course of the battle Siegel relied an instruction to Reed, which, being a spectator, would seem to be a bad thing. Spectators are continually doing this. Yet Siegel drew an indefinite suspension. The fates of baseball are dicke and strange. They have devious ways their wonders to perform. Take the case the Yankees, the best-hatted pitcher, and Earl Combe of the Yankees, outfielder, both offered both LOUville club and the Louisville club and Yankees. Miller Hurlers was after new pitching talent and was that he wasn't greatly exceeded by Combe, who as a left-handed pitcher did not have the right national. "We are overworked with left-handed batters right now," said Hurlers. "What we need of a right-handed pitcher." The Yankees thought they had Dean, but the Gians raised the ante and lained the pitcher. The Yankees had Dean, but the Yankees had a game of financial rivalry, which then was rampant between the local Brewers' heirs where the fickle fates come in. Combe is one of the outstanding American league, the best-beloved young baseball player. Dean Dairy blown to develop into a winner for John McGraw and justify why he was purchased $400,000 made when he was purchased. But the left-handed batting outfielder who wasn't wanted so much by Haggins in January, 1924, already has a lot of interest in playing for him, and in 1928 should be one of the most interesting players in the mid-40s. One of Mack's Stars The photograph shows Bishop, second baseman of the Philadelphia Athletics, considered the best second baseman since Connie Mack traced Eddie Collins to the Chicago White Sox. Quinn on Waiver Route Recently the Boston Red Sox asked for waivers on the veteran spitball pitcher, Jack Quinn. The two leading clubs, Washington and Philadelphia, refused to waive their rights to the player, he went to Philadelphia, as *Washington* was in the lead when walters were added to the team. He was the last near champion with pennant chances. At the time walters were requested to play against any other Boston pitcher, seven. The collapses of the Red Box, however, has convinced the owners and staff of the club that a result with youngsters. For that reason, they did not fit in with plans of the club. Two Pitchers Give One Pass to Two Batters Two batters received from two pitchers one base on the bats in the eight inning, the other in the seventh. The between the Yankas and Senators. It was thus wise. With one down, one O'Neill was sent to pitch in the seventh inning wide pitches from Rustieker, wheapon Manager Harris Rustieker Dutch and called in Marbury. The pitcher countered by sending Schang to the plate to finish O'Neill's turn at bat. Schang drew two had one, which made four balls in the ninth inning. Marbury, being the pitcher to finish this act of generosity, was charged with the issuance of the free pitching fee for 25 per cent responsible for it. If-you are planning to send yout boy oF girl through college, oF through ‘one of the professional schools, your best chance to assure yourself of at- taining this end Is to insure thelr lives with our endowment policies. ‘The younger the child, the better is your opportunity, We insure children from birth and onward. When the child is insured before school days begin, the premium is lower and the poliey matures earlier. You will find our rates for these policies particularly attractive. ‘The parent who invests heatly, as is now necessary, in the edueation of his children, snes good Judgment to protect himself’ andthe child ‘against the risk involved in this investment. PUBLIC FORUM However, the board should endower to get a man possessing the necessary skills to perform the duties, either of these three educators, diplinarians, administrators, executives and schoolmen; for it is going to require a man of their calibre and range to successfully direct affairs at Prairie IMPROVEMENTS IN OUR SCHOOLS The Dallas Express: Entered as second-class matter May 28, 1919, at the postoffice at Houston, Texas, under the Act of March 3, 1879 The Express along with all of the other institutions of Dallas, is granted the right to administer the school system of Dallas, and especially with those which directly affect the health of the children, to which for many years has been a variable death trap, is to be remodeled. The school is also seeking training in it; a nurse to look after the health of Newborn children has been trained, and the direction of the health office of the system; the minor improves the health of the teachers in the salaries of teachers and the addition of several teachers have been The board should see to it that no peanut politician or pseudo-educator is selected and elected as the titular head of this state school; for the elevation of any such man to the principalship will prove a calamity to this institution of learning and seriously retard the progress of negro education in the Lone Star state for generations to come. The Informer still hold to its original position as expressed in last week's issue, that the colored citizens of Texas, in some concerted manner, should confer with the board, either collectively or individually, and make known to these men the race of the people of Texas. The Informer will View State College; but this paper fears that the board is going to experience some difficulty in getting the right kind of a man for the post, due to the political complexion of the situation. However. The Informer is very anxious that the next principal of Prairie View be a man that will reflect credit upon the institution. The Informer will seek the deacers; and to this end it is hoped that the board will take ample time before making a final decision in the matter. Some of these improvements, the Express fees, are the direct result of the school's efforts to improve the care early last year by a group of interested citizens. That petition set forth in detail the actual conditions required to recommend certain improvements which seemed necessary. The school also asked the Darrell school were among the things recommended. This is as it is, and the school is just such interest in their schools and they should present their cases in such confidence. The history of Dallas proves that its directing heads, in the early 1980s, were interested in the improvement of conditions as they affect the whole public for needed things. IT IS ENTIRELY DIFFERENT IN HOUSTON! Elsewhere in this issue of The Informer appears an editorial from last week's issue of the Dallas Express, which discusses recent improvements made in the public schools of Dallas, and the part the colored citizens of that city played in petitioning the board for these and other considerations and improvements. The attitude of the colored citizens of Dallas in this respect is entirely different from the position assumed by the colored citizens of Houston, as our people seem to think it a wanton and matricious criminal act to ask the school board or city council for anything, notwithstanding the crying need and the fact that all of us are taxpaying citizens of this school district and municipality. ANY MAN WHO IS GOOD ENOUGH TO SHEID HIS BLOOD FOR HIS COUNTRY IS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE GIVEN A SQUARE DEAL AFTERWARDS, NO MAN IS ENTITLED TO MORE AND NO MAN @HOULD RECEIVE LESS. ROOSEVELT. The success of this petition as far as the improvements are indicated can be seen by the continuation of the efforts of the group of interested citizens and if the group is active, the active interest of those who had no part in the framing and presentation of the petition will also the efforts of these citizens should not cease until all of the efforts are made. Only once in the last two decades have the colored citizens of Houston ever sent a representative committee before the school board head, and, because they did not get what was anticipated (as the proposed bond issue at that time was defeated because of petty politics), it appears that they have decided to sit suplyen and by wait for the leavings and scrapings, or do without these and school buildings, sanitary conditions around the schools and other improvements so necessary in modern public school systems. HQUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1925 SELECTING PRAIRIE VIEW'S NEXT PRINCIPAL! In electing and selecting the new principal of Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College, the board of directors will do well to give the matter careful and deliberate consideration and endeavor to place at the head of this state institution of learning for colored youths, some outstanding and eminent educator who measures up fully to this high office and its requirements. For some reasons not made clear, the new school project for Oak Cliff was not made. That project is in a badly needed as are all other schools, not has not been made known. That project is in a badly needed as are all other schools, not has not been made known. That project is in a badly needed as are all other schools, not has not been made known. Let the citizens still think in terms of their schools. Let them study their needs. Let them grow them. Let them grow them. Let that it is the duty of the state and civil governments to provide for them of him a profitable citizen. The best in education is the right of every New child along with all the others. Then, what is worse and more reprehensible in the Houston species Africanus, if any black man has the temerity, backbone, hardhair and nerve to make some demands for the race along this and other lines, these so-called race leaders—who are in real danger—have to be more aggressive, more typical "Uncle Toms," and who are too internally scared, cowardly, selfish, and self-centered to ask the school board or city council for anything—will run to "de white fokes" and endeavor to read manly, free-thinking and courageous black man out of the colored race, and to try to show their "white friends" that they are not a threat to the racial strife and is a constant menace to the community. It is quite natural that the woods will be full of aspirants and candidates, but the board should exercise extreme care and precaution to see that the wrong man does not get the principalship of this school. Prairie View is a composite institution of learning, belong to the colored race what the Agricultural and Mechanical College, University of Texas, the various normal and technological schools, and the white race what the state government, see in the white race of this state and section. The old idea that all pimps and stool-pigeons are of the so-called low type is erroneous, for in Houston most of our pimps, stool-pigeons, sycophants, lackeys and mannikins are members of the "upper-crust"(*?) and they will say anything about their race to a member of some other race or undertake to do anything to a member of their own race, (even if said person is a member of the same race) or to be a member of the tone and hifalting" pimp in various other capacities) just to be called a "good nigger" by some member of another race. In other words, to select a man as principal of Prinie View merely because of his work in one particular branch of the educational field, is hardly calculated to place and maintain the school on the high standard of symmetrical education. C. C. PENN TAKES OVER MIMS REALTY BUSINESS The Informer knows but few men in and of this state capable to fill this position, among whom are Dr. J. R. E. Lee, principal Agricultural and Mechanical College, Tallahassee, Florida; Prof A. E. Holland, principal colored high school at Wichita Falls, Texas; Prof J. J. Rhoads, principal Booker T. Washington high school, Dallas, Texas. We know plenty of "big Negroes" in Houston—men high in the educational, fraternal, religious, social and civic life of the community and state—who would go to any length to "do" or "receive the commendation and laudation from men of other races. Dr. Lee is a native Texan was educated at Bishop College, Dr. Lee is a native Texan was educated at Bishop College, relinquishing his work at Bishop to assume charge of the academic department of Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama, the late Dr. Booker T. Washington over a long stretch of years. It is this lik of human jackasses, who never take the initiative themselves in matters of racial and public weal—who are always in the minority and who are not able to have an opinion and give expression to same either by word or action—that is retarding our racial cause in Houston, and virtually making it well nigh impossible for the race to get its just deserts from the board of education, city fathers and other leading Leaving Tunkegue Dr. Lee was principal of the Lincoln high which became the field secretary, for the National Urban League, which (Signed) H. L. MIMS. 419 Odd Fellows Temple Responding to the call of his first love, education, he accepted the principalship of the state school of Florida last year, and is now serving his second term as head of the institution of learning for the colored youths of the Everglades state. The Informer has repeatedly suggested and advised our people in the past to be more vigilant in their committee to those in official authority and make known our needs and desires, instead of always sitting around and indulging in our chief pastime—singing the blues and hymns of lamenta- BACK ON JOB BACK ON JOB Dr. Lee is eminently qualified for the principalship of Prairie and the school, being a native son and one of the race's most distinguished educators, disciplinarians, and schoolmen, his appointment and acceptance of the position would meet almost universal approval. A. E. These spineless and backboneless Houston bipeds of color will be judged on the basis of their audacious as to presents a petition to the board of education of that city, and will even dare to contend that these improvements are not in the schools without resorting to such radical and "upplush" methods. In Texas two of the most outstanding educators, disciplinarians, executives and schoolmen, are Professors Holland and Rhoads, the latter being the younger of the lot; but both are capable and well-prepared men; intellectually, physically and morally qualified to increase the prestige and influence of Prairie and direct and guide its activities in an able and massive manner. These same cowardly and cringing colored Houstouhans—many of them men above want and some holding offices of trust, power and influence among their own people—will possibly criticise the Dallas Express, Editor Rice and Manager Starks for making any of their own decisions in the legislatures and the improvements they were able to get in their public school system by petitioning the school board of their city! For a number of years Prof. Holland taught at Bishop College the alma matter, as well as in the public schools of Texas; having served as principal of the high schools at Willis, Palestine and now at Wichita Falls. The question has often been推翻ed to The Informer, "when will the team in Houston get together and work together with the common good." Prof. Rhonda, who has done post-work at Yale University, where he won honors, is proving himself to be one of the most efficient and proficient disciplinarians, educators and school teachers. Rhonda is also an educator and is about the highest salaried colored principal in Texas. Our answer is, "The Negroes of Houston will get together and work together for their common good when we have had quite a number of funerals and have consigned most of these cowardly crying pimps, stool-pigeons, stool-pussytoes to their graves."[1] Prof. Rhoads is a native of Marshall, Texas, where he attended the public schools and later took his degree from Bishop College. He engaged in Y. M. C. A. a week at Tuskegee Institute during his time at the university and then back to Texas to take charge of the colored high school at Jalapene. The Informer again wishes to congratulate the colored citizens of Dallas, as well as the Dallas Express, for performing their holden duty in this respect; while this paper also desires to thank the board of education of that city for the interest manifested in the colored public schools and the recognition and appreciation of red-blooded and upstanding colored citizens of that metropolis. DR. L. M. MITCHELL, dentist, with D. R. L. M. MITCHELL, dentist, P. bilingual, has his dental practice after an absence from his of lice since August 4, to serious lice and is now back on the job, and cobly invites all former patients and his family to visit him a hivt. His office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and he offers telephone phone. Perhaps there is no member of our race in Texas or the South better qualified for the principalship of Prairie View than the governor of Texas, who is also the mayor, whether he or the other two men would consent, or even consider having their present posts for one where petty politics and designing politicians make the tenure of the principal uncertain, or having the governor make every change at state administration, often with nothing but a message. As for the so-called Negro leaders of Houston and their agitation and contention for improvements in our public schools—since "there ain't no sech animal"—let us look to the Lord and be dismissed. Selab. INFORMOGRAMS if mosquitoes will persist in attending all the church services, some way ought to be devised whereby they can be sprayed on all other members and all other attendants and let our ankles and those of the greater sex severely alone. Such men as the governor of Mississippi and others who have so scarcely denounced the lynchers of the South should be very careful or they could be treated with a "Niger Lover" tacked onto their cognomen, and "give a dog a bad name, etc." Men in high political positions should be very careful how they attack the established customs of their particular sections. The Pat M. Nefl merit penitentiary fame for the prison commission owing to a tendency of the honor inmate had to get returning to.
