Nashville, Tenn.—The "midnight terror" who has caused the citizens of Nashville to live in constant horror for the entire summer, came very close to telling me that he wrote a letter to the Nashville Tennessee scouting the police force of Nashville as "the bumiest I ever saw." Their last grand blunder was in the arrest of a colored man on whom they attempted to kill him. The series of outrages committed, only to learn that the "midnight terror" had committed another attack after the arrest of Henry Holt, accused him of murdering natural vultures, the man entered the dormitory of Fisk University and the one of the students who sat in the room, searching the mattes, for valuables. PUBLIC FORUM However, the board should endower to get a man possessing the necessary skills to perform the duties, either of these three educators, diplinarians, administrators, executives and schoolmen; for it is going to require a man of their calibre and range to successfully direct affairs at Prairie IMPROVEMENTS IN OUR SCHOOLS The Dallas Express: Entered as second-class matter May 28, 1919, at the postoffice at Houston, Texas, under the Act of March 3, 1879 The Express along with all of the other institutions of Dallas, is granted the right to administer the school system of Dallas, and especially with those which directly affect the health of the children, to which for many years has been a variable death trap, is to be remodeled. The school is also seeking training in it; a nurse to look after the health of Newborn children has been trained, and the direction of the health office of the system; the minor improves the health of the teachers in the salaries of teachers and the addition of several teachers have been The board should see to it that no peanut politician or pseudo-educator is selected and elected as the titular head of this state school; for the elevation of any such man to the principalship will prove a calamity to this institution of learning and seriously retard the progress of negro education in the Lone Star state for generations to come. The Informer still hold to its original position as expressed in last week's issue, that the colored citizens of Texas, in some concerted manner, should confer with the board, either collectively or individually, and make known to these men the race of the people of Texas. The Informer will View State College; but this paper fears that the board is going to experience some difficulty in getting the right kind of a man for the post, due to the political complexion of the situation. However. The Informer is very anxious that the next principal of Prairie View be a man that will reflect credit upon the institution. The Informer will seek the deacers; and to this end it is hoped that the board will take ample time before making a final decision in the matter. Some of these improvements, the Express fees, are the direct result of the school's efforts to improve the care early last year by a group of interested citizens. That petition set forth in detail the actual conditions required to recommend certain improvements which seemed necessary. The school also asked the Darrell school were among the things recommended. This is as it is, and the school is just such interest in their schools and they should present their cases in such confidence. The history of Dallas proves that its directing heads, in the early 1980s, were interested in the improvement of conditions as they affect the whole public for needed things. IT IS ENTIRELY DIFFERENT IN HOUSTON! Elsewhere in this issue of The Informer appears an editorial from last week's issue of the Dallas Express, which discusses recent improvements made in the public schools of Dallas, and the part the colored citizens of that city played in petitioning the board for these and other considerations and improvements. The attitude of the colored citizens of Dallas in this respect is entirely different from the position assumed by the colored citizens of Houston, as our people seem to think it a wanton and matricious criminal act to ask the school board or city council for anything, notwithstanding the crying need and the fact that all of us are taxpaying citizens of this school district and municipality. ANY MAN WHO IS GOOD ENOUGH TO SHEID HIS BLOOD FOR HIS COUNTRY IS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE GIVEN A SQUARE DEAL AFTERWARDS, NO MAN IS ENTITLED TO MORE AND NO MAN @HOULD RECEIVE LESS. ROOSEVELT. The success of this petition as far as the improvements are indicated can be seen by the continuation of the efforts of the group of interested citizens and if the group is active, the active interest of those who had no part in the framing and presentation of the petition will also the efforts of these citizens should not cease until all of the efforts are made. Only once in the last two decades have the colored citizens of Houston ever sent a representative committee before the school board head, and, because they did not get what was anticipated (as the proposed bond issue at that time was defeated because of petty politics), it appears that they have decided to sit suplyen and by wait for the leavings and scrapings, or do without these and school buildings, sanitary conditions around the schools and other improvements so necessary in modern public school systems. In electing and selecting the new principal of Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College, the board of directors will do well to give the matter careful and deliberate consideration and endeavor to place at the head of this state institution of learning for colored youths, some outstanding and eminent educator who measures up fully to this high office and its requirements. For some reasons not made clear, the new school project for Oak Cliff was not made. That project is in a badly needed as are all other schools, not has not been made known. In other words, to select a man as principal of Prinie View merely because of his work in one particular branch of the educational field, is hardly calculated to place and maintain the school on the high standard of symmetrical education. We know plenty of "big Negroes" in Houston—men high in the educational, fraternal, religious, social and civic life of the community and state—who would go to any length to "do" or "receive the commendation and laudation from men of other races. In Texas two of the most outstanding educators, disciplinarians, executives and schoolmen, are Professors Holland and Rhoads, the latter being the younger of the lot; but both are capable and well-prepared men; intellectually, physically and morally qualified to increase the prestige and influence of Prairie and direct and guide its activities in an able and massive manner. These same cowardly and cringing colored Houstouhans—many of them men above want and some holding offices of trust, power and influence among their own people—will possibly criticise the Dallas Express, Editor Rice and Manager Starks for making any of their own decisions in the legislatures and the improvements they were able to get in their public school system by petitioning the school board of their city! For a number of years Prof. Holland taught at Bishop College the alma matter, as well as in the public schools of Texas; having served as principal of the high schools at Willis, Palestine and now at Wichita Falls. The question has often been推翻ed to The Informer, "when will the team in Houston get together and work together with the common good." Prof. Rhonda, who has done post-work at Yale University, where he won honors, is proving himself to be one of the most efficient and proficient disciplinarians, educators and school teachers. Rhonda is also an educator and is about the highest salaried colored principal in Texas. Our answer is, "The Negroes of Houston will get together and work together for their common good when we have had quite a number of funerals and have consigned most of these cowardly crying pimps, stool-pigeons, stool-pussytoes to their graves."[1] Prof. Rhoads is a native of Marshall, Texas, where he attended the public schools and later took his degree from Bishop College. He engaged in Y. M. C. A. a week at Tuskegee Institute during his time at the university and then back to Texas to take charge of the colored high school at Jalapene. The Informer again wishes to congratulate the colored citizens of Dallas, as well as the Dallas Express, for performing their holden duty in this respect; while this paper also desires to thank the board of education of that city for the interest manifested in the colored public schools and the recognition and appreciation of red-blooded and upstanding colored citizens of that metropolis.
