pulling off this stunt the governor and, his hunting associates were merely running true to Southern form, where it had long been the scapegoat for numerous offences common after public charging that their colored servant was the possessor of this supply of whiskey, it seemed that the rude man became conscious of the wrong rude men were perpetrating upon their two or three of them finally decided to attack and make blood on the law enforcement officers did not put much credence in the white hats of the ownership of the liquor, and the fact that it was hardly probable that such fugitive, under such circumstances, capacity in Alabama would own such five liquor, under such circumstances, up against it in presenting a preexcitement or preexcitement for the good old man. The colored brother in the South, in many instances, is against the black man's little license or damned if he does'n't; and, since the black man's little license or damned if he does'n't, in a Dixie court, the colored brother only pennies the penalty for some crime

LOCAL SINGER TRIUMPHED
AT TUESDAY NIGHT RECITAL
Despite chilly and damp weather, the recital given at Wesley Memorial Church in New York was beautiful. Webster, Tuesday night, by Mrs. H. M. Middleton, Horton's former hostess, presented the recital de luxe, a brilliant success. This was the first appearance of this season for Mrs. Middleton, her own, and the audience showed its appreciation by calligraphy of applause for a bird, according to musical critics with wonderful possibilities. Assisted by Dr. L. M. Mitchell with music, she and her team were especially wonderful and marvelous in "The Wren," "I Hear You Calling," and "The Trouble I See." God for a Garden," "Cuckoo," has never Mrs. Middleton's voice appeared to better advantage, and her recital was a distinct success. She was accompanied by guests from Wesley chair and Cole-Didge-Taylor Choral Club, and at the end of the recital were accompanied by friends compitiment her upon her musical triumph, the company, and her playing came up to her usual high standard of excelence.

D. C.—President Coolidge's annual message to the American people now for discussion, broughtasis a number of important facts. These facts, of an exclusive interview with the official White Man, by the Associated Negro Press, gives to collisappointed and skepticalically (as the spokesy advised), a slant on the chief executive's slant of was held several days prior to the presentation and the day prior to the official visit of President secretary-Treasurer Emmett J. He referred to the industrial opportunities, specifically, and likewise to measurements, and law enforcement.
President Coolidge visualizes all Americans, as chief executive, but in his own words, "Colored America is one of patient, measured, caution, to a degree, sympathetic, to a degree, open on state issues." This writer observes him from many interviews, and hearing him talk with officials on state issues in "opportunity" for the Negro, but certainly not very far ahead of curricula. He is willing to accuse, but seldom indicted to initiate. Thus, colored Americans very well knows it, but will not alter his conservative New England course.

SCHOOL BOARD AND "NIGGER" FOLK SONGS!
The feature of the memorial program was the eulogy by Bill H. P. Carter, the full text of which follows:
The Informer has been besieged with complaints and protests from colored citizens of Houston, who resent the attempted humor in a news story appearing in a local daily sheet, last Tuesday, concerning the colored chorus at the Jack Yates Colored High, directed and trained by Prof. J. Will Jones, a nationally recognized musician and musical authority.
This anti-Negro publication, which always goes out of its way to poke fun at, ridicule and caricature the colored race (thereby playing to the riffraff and hi poliol of the white race), stated that Jones had "orders" to only teach the "young Negroes to sing the old favorites in the old-fashioned way", and added that E. E. Oberholzer declared that this course is proving popular.
Concerning a visit of the school board and its head to Yates High last Monday and the singing of the students, this daily sheet hurried the following insult at the colored citizens and its large number of colored readers: "These white folks have come down to hear you niggers sing; git on that platform and sing," and they did as their leader (meaning either Prof. Jones or Principal James). If no reporter of this white afternoon daily was present at Yates High on this occasion to "cover" this singing, then some member of the school board or the superintendent of the public schools undoubtedly gave this newspaper this ridiculous and scandalous "news story," which cast such a unsavory and distasteful reflection and asperation upon the intelligent colored citizens of Houston; and these citizens are incensed that such a base statement and false representation of the best in their race should be published in any newspaper as a deformity in the character of the students in general and Prof. Jones, Principal James D. Ryan. Yates faculty and students in particular.
Both Jones and Ryan are educated, cultured, high-class Christian citizens and gentlemen. Prof. Jones is a recognized musical leader of no mediocre ability (having served as dean of the college and, when any newspaper or individual, black or white, puts such words and sentiments in his mouth, that paper or person is not only making an amateurish attempt to be funny, but it or he is making an "ass" of itself or himself, and proving itself or himself to be a charitable member of the Anxious Association, who accuse him of employing ante-below language and cutting such capers just to amuse "de white fokes" and show up his own student body and race! Negro takes unwanted pride in the singing and preservation of his folk songs and Dixie melodies, but he does not like the idea of singing them, even to white school boards and superintendents of public schools, just to be made the butt of some cub reporter or school official who endevors to substitute wit for brains. The Houston school board or superintendent of public schools does not openly disavow and repudiate any connection with, or responsibility for this pseudo-humorous "news item," then the only honorable course for Prof. Jones to pursue is to resign his post at once; and in such action he (Prof. Jones) will be backed by every free-thinking, unfettered, untrammelled, forward-looking citizen in Houston, Texas, the South and the nation. That's that!
It was not so with our deceased and fallen brethren, and we had seconded it to accept both victory and defeat. We had seconded it to accept both victory and defeat and came to accept our rules and regulations without dissension. One of our from their line that they believed in was that they should be to a higher degree by the words of Longinus.
Furthermore, do boards of education and public-school superintendents merely visit colored schools to hear "nigger songs" sung and acted by the colored children? If the Houston board of education has not seen the wisdom or necessity of placing certain limitations and restrictions upon the type and class of music to be taught the white children in the school system, the board arrogate unto itself the authority to prescribe and outline a certain brand of "im-crow" music for colored children?
For the test of the heart is trouble,
And it always comes with the years.
And the smile that is worth the homage of
worth.
We have no particular objection to singing Negro folk songs, jubilees, spirituals and plantation melodies (for our people are the only singers in the world who can really sing these songs), but we hold to the belief that our voices are free and our "personal property," and that no man or set of men have any right to sing in the school system, even a school board or titlehead of the public school system.
in the smile that will shine through "tears."
I realize that there are in this city many organizations that are right concession of our organization, but they are not found in any other similar organization of that kind that makes us love to be in them. I did not fully agree with all the one I found that made me love to be in them, but not on business and pro-community that made me love to be in them. I find expression in friendship. I find life in friendship. Let us as its try to ask for that kind of expression in friendship. Let us as its try to ask for that kind of expression in friendship.
The Informer, speaking for the colored citizens of Houston and the patrons of the colored public schools, objects strenuously and viciously to any iron-clad edict, even from the school board, that forces colored public school children to sing only one class of music; if the board persists in this position, then it were not the local public department recently inaugurated in the local public schools.
With "jim-crow" public school buildings, "jim-crow" street cars and buses, "jim-crow" railroad accommodations, "jim-crow" livestock facilities, "jim-crow" practices and institutions, we should balk and call a halt when it comes to "jim-crow" music in the public schools of Houa-
