DEAL CONSUMMATED RESTORING COMPANY TO NEGRO CONTINGENT
Contract Creates Most Gigantic Financial Institution Owned and Controlled By Negroes in America—Another Milestone in Road of Negro Progress and Achievement—Lost Confidence Restored By Deal—S. W. Rutherford Guiding Genius—Personnel Reorganized—Ferguson and Day, Texans, Retained With Organization Claiming $75,000,000 Insurance in Force.
Atlanta, Ga.—The signing of the contract on March 16 by which the National Benefit Life Insurance Company of Washington, D.C., took over the business of the Standard Life Insurance Company stands as another milestone in the road of Negro progress and achievement. In addition, it stands as another monument to the business sagacity and foresight of that pioneer of insurance men, Samuel Wither Rutherford, who, in 1898, founded the company to which he has given twenty-eight years of uninterrupted service. In addition, the National Benefit through this period has been greatly beaten and sound, and the institution has through its lifetime commanded wide attention for its capable and conservative management. There is little doubt that the high position which the company occupied even prior to this transaction was due to the leadership and ability of Mr. Rutherford, who has served as president of the company since the past decade has seen the beginning of numerous business enterprises among Negroes, and especially has the number increased in the field of insurance. There has been a great deal of talk about the advantages of combinations and consolidations, with their attendant economies of operation, but it remained for National Benefit to put these theories into practice in a big way.
Special to The Informer.
Atlanta, Ga.—The signing of which the National Benefit Life, D. C., took over the business Company stands as another milestone and achievement. In addition to the business sagacity and insurance man, Samuel Wilson R. the company to which he has gerrtured service.

In recent years some of the greatest mergers among banks, insurance companies and other commercial enterprises among the other group have been consumed, resulting in the need to give the public ability to give the public a better commodity-at a lower cost, and the assurances of greater permanency in business. The National Benefit and its companies of unusual magnitude in their resources, operating among our people, to carry forward this modern business idea to a successful conclusion.

nies gives to the race an institution with 75,000,000 worth of business in force, and makes the National Benefit the largest financial institution of our race.
It is interesting to note and study the leaders and the forces which were responsible for the successful qualification of the resources and man power of two institutions which have made their impress upon the economic development of the Negro race.
The early history of Standard Life as a corporation organized in the state of Georgia, in 1913, is well known to those who have followed the course of Negro business. Starting from the very bottom it grew to the point

where in January, 1923, there was approximately $260,000 of insurance in force on bookkeeps, and with life insurance in force the largest life insurance company of the race doing an exclusive life business. At this time the business was taken over by the Southern Insurance Company, a white insurer, and the company sent the largest company out of the control of Negroes was without a doubt a blow to our racial pride, and the only hope of future control and ownership of the company in time in the future the Negroes might be able to exercise the option granted them in the contract, to buy back the business during a ten-year period. In the Southern Insurance Company the Southern Insurance Company the business was sold to a group of the white capitalists of Arkansas who organized closely for the purpose of taking over this business. It is from the organization passed into the hands of the National Benefit Life Insurance organization under white management, the main office of the company, the home office personal, field force, and home office personnel, and held practically intact. After a bitter legal battle stretching over two days, a jury in county court-at-law No. 1, Ben F. Wilson, judge, found C. F. Richardson, editor of The Houston Informer, guilty of printing libelous matter in the newspaper concerning W. L. Davis, acting principal of Gregory school, and fined the race publisher $750. Attorneys for Editor Richardson immediately filed a motion for a new trial, which is set down for argument Saturday, March 26. If this motion is overruled, the then case will be appealed to the court of criminal appeals.
Editor Richardson laid a predicate for an appeal through the lower appellate courts of the state to the United States supreme court, when his attorneys filed a motion asking Judge Wilson to dismiss the case on the ground that it was in violation of the fourteenth amendment to the federal constitution.

'SHUFFLE ALONG' PLAYS AT HOUSTON THEATRES WITH BROADWAY CAST
The argument made by Hon. Earle Adam, counsel for Richardson, that the complaint was defective, and citing decisions from the appellate court bearing out and supporting his legal contentions, was overruled by the court that the paid prosecutors of the complaining witness failed to cite a single opinion or law to substantiate their contention that the indictment stood the test of reason. The court not even permitted to prove the truthfulness of contents in the "Davis editorial" of January 15, 1997. The case attracted unusual attention and the court room and corridors were crowded with witnesses and spectators, who seemed very much interested in the case.

The standing of the part which Negro Insurance companies are playing in the industry is shown by the tremendous amount of employment which they furnish to the Negro Insurance Association has just made available to them. The employed by the 22 companies which are members of the National Negro Insurance Association has been the year ending 1925, they paid salaries during the year of apportionment to each individual worker of $600 per year, $75 per month, $725 per year. The character of this employment service was distinguished positions, given to director and president, were given in this army of workers who were employed by the national companies. We remembered that the Negro companies have insurance in

STUBBORN FACTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES!
It has been reported to The Informer that some official of the Houston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who seems to be unable to differentiate between a headline and sub-head in a newspaper and an editorial policy, has circulated the report that the editor of The Informer is "fighting" this organization, and that this paper, through its editor, has endeavored to discredit the Advancement Association and bring it in "contempt among the white people of this community," et cetera.
The report states that this official took umbrage with a subheading which appeared in a recent issue of The Informer, in connection with a news story, which referred to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as being "that abusive person for society."
The Informer has repeatedly commended the national office of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in its efforts to safeguard the interests of our people; and, even though this paper has not agreed with all its policies and programs, no voice has been raised by this editor in protest or condemnation of the motive actuating those guiding and directing affairs at the New York office.
As for the local branch, which seems to be in a state of suspended animation or tucked securely and safely in the vest pocket of certain local officials, this paper has also commended it whenever it has accomplished anything worthy of commendation and praise; and this editor recently made himself proud of the work he did in this paper it initiated and insisted that the Houston branch of this paper was the instrument that saved an innocent colored youth (Luther Collins) from being railroaded to the electric chair or state penal institution.
But, when officials and leading spirits in any movement openly proclaimed the need for such movement for which movement stands, and become syphilis and AIDS cases of interest who endeavor to throttle the colored press and reduce us to abject jeopardy and bondage; when any of the officials or leading members of such movement form an unholy and profane alliance with internal and external foes of the race, and become syphilis and AIDS cases of interest who are giving their very lives for the best interests of our race and the social order, then The Informer feels free to expose such spineless and deceitful double-dealers, hypocrites and human jackasses!
The Informer has no fight on the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, for which has been a potent factor in effecting the second emancipation of the Negro race in America, particularly in the South; but, judging from the apparent policy of the local branch, which seems to preach one thing before colored audiences and espouse and practice another when in the presence of members of other races, the Negro race in America, particularly in the national organization, would be repudiated, denounced and destroyed.
Why do so-called "Negro leaders" get so excited when the term "radical" is employed; when, in its original form, the word merely means to reach the center or ultimate source; affecting the vital principle or principles; throughgoing; original; fundamental; make or not?
Any organization or movement that seeks to remedy or alter existing evils and conditions, by the very nature of things, is radical; because the undertaking or program seeks to uproot and abolish such customs and practices which are not in strict accord and perfect harmony with democratic (in its larger sense and interpretation) ideals and institutions.
Is it fear of being known "radical" that has deterred the local branch of this association, which will not even call a public meeting of the local society, and which will not eveil to make one solitary thing that organization is now doing in this community for the people it is supposed to represent, defend and protect.
Is it the greatest foe to progress and advancement, for the failure of any body or organization to function and show signs of life, is an indication that deterioration has set in or decay and imminent, or imminent, or imminent.
Instead of only becoming temporarily active when some Negro has been indicted for some criminal offense, if the local branch
The Houston Informer
wants to perform a distinct and lasting service to the race and society, why does it not get busy and do something for safeguarding and protecting the rights of all the people by waging legal action against the many injustices he leaped upon them and theirs both in this community and state?
Through the efforts of the El Paso branch and the national office of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the United States supreme court has recently declared the democratic "white man's" primary statute of Texas invalid and branched out the Houston branch stand in this matter? Did this branch contribute anything towards Dr. L. A. Nixon's legal defense fund?
Does this branch favor colored citizens of Texas enjoying and conserving their electric franchise rights as guaranteed and warranted under the provisions of the federal constitution and its amendments?
Or does the local body hold to the opinion that, since Dr. Nixon's action was so unusual and "radical," and since he did not stay in a "nigger's place," it can not subscribe to or endorse such a movement?
Or does the local branch consider Dr. Nixon dangerous and menacing to the "amicable relations that are existing between the two races in El Paso and Texas," and that the El Paso physician of the Southern District should be ordered or reported for his check, garrill and arm stand for his inalienable and constitutional rights and warranties?
Being so interested in the race's welfare, well-being and betterment of the people, helping Benjamin Harmon, the New Orleans race man who appealed and won his residential segregation fight before the highest legal tribunal in America, in his legal defense fund?
Is the local branch in harmony and accord with such protest movements and test cases, and does it believe that any American citizen should be involved in this community?
When the republican (?) lords and bosses of Houston denied several thousand colored citizens their constitutional rights to vote and exercise their elective franchise warranties in the principal National Association for the Advancement of Colored People maintain such painful silence? Despite the fact that some of its members were disfranchised in said primary election, if the branch has ever raised its voice against the last July, why did the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People maintain such painful silence? With notstanding the fact that the laws of Texas accommodate that accommodations on the railroad trains and public roads, not only last July, but June 14, 1897, the local branch, many of whose members and officials are constantly and continually "jim-crowd" through Texas and the South— ever done to remedy this situation and see that the railroad companies of Texas comply with this state statute in every detail? Why is it so difficult to enforce the railroad branch is willing to endure such inconveniences in order not to offend the railroad officials and appear to the white people as being a "radical agitator", which is "completely out of its place"? Why is the state and railroad officials of Texas are ever on the job when it comes to the "separateness" of the accommodations, why can not the local branch—one of the few remaining in the Lone Star State, if it really does still exist—be just as persistent and insistent upon seeing that the "equality" of the accommodations is provided by law, is also observed by state and railroad officials.
If the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is so interested in the welfare and reputation of public school teachers (some of whom have been honored by the NAACP) to initiate a movement to see that colored teachers, who must pass the same examinations and meet the same tests and requirements as white teachers, receive the same remuneration and consideration? If the local branch of public school teachers and schools, what has the Houston branch ever done, under the present administration, to secure better school buildings, larger campuses, increased pay and more sanitary and healthful living conditions for teachers, pupils and patrons? We are judge or infer from the actions of the Houston branch of the NAACP Association that it is only interested in black men accused of crime, and that neither the local body nor its guiding geniuses have either time or inclination to look after and safeguard the larger interests of all the people? These constitute some of the interrogations that both The Information Center of Houston and the Houston branch of which have unintentionally and liberally supported a local branch over a number of years (in fact, doing this at a period when some of the present officials and "leading lights" were not even connected with the local organization, or if they had joined same, did not make it known), desire to be answered; and, failing to receive a response, refuse to be interviewed. We are certainly at liberty to draw their own conclusions. Selah!
STANDARD RECLAIMED TO COLORED GROUP!
After many abortive efforts by several different racial groups and organizations to reclaim Standard Life Insurance Company of Atlanta, Ga., to the Negro race, and restore the faith and confidence that so many people lost in race enterprises when the debacle came a few years ago which caused the race to lose the Standard, the National Benefit Life Insurance Company of Washington, D. C., has finally succeeded in purchasing the Atlanta company from its white owners and have thus brought back to the race one of its most highly prized jewels.
When The Informer took the position that too much unfavorable publicity would not only harm the failing Standard organization, it would have also caused the interests of the other Negro insurance companies and racial business in general, this paper's attitude was severely criticised in certain circles; and one of our esteemed journalistic contemporaries insisted that The Informer's editor had "sold out" the interests of the race to Hemingway and the Standard company.
While congratulating the officials of the National Benefit Life Insurance Company for engineering and consummating the most gigantic, stupendous and far-reaching deal in the race's history in America, this paper also wishes to pay a compliment to two teams (Tom Forgason and Aaron Day), which remained with the Standard company, and upon the insurance rocks at any moment and thus go down to an untimely grave.
This huge deal not only redeems the Standard to the Negro race, but it also demonstrates the fact that the race has made substantial advancement and that we have produced business problems that require brains, money and organization.
