MISSISSIPPI RIVER CAUSES HAVOC TO VALLEY RESIDENTS
Memphis, Tenn.—(By The Associated Negro Press.)—The Mississippi River with its tributaries has again broken through man-made devices to keep it in its course and the turbulent waters are rushing madly over the lands from here to the sea, destroying life. The ravages of the water as it sweeps over the banks impingering on the land often make it impossible to estimate at present, and the tragedy becomes more serious as disease and freezing weather threaten to collect more lives.

INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOPIC—How Jesus Is Daniel Today.
YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS IO- The Danger of Sudden Tempations.
1. Peter's Downfall (Mark 14:29-71).
This began when he refused to hear the word "suffer" and with a foul oath, declared: "I know not the man." When the disciples talked about the cross, they not only ceased to grow in knowledge, but they began to deteriorate in moral discernment and to become the shameful denial of their Lord. Steps in Peter's backsliding:
1. Overwearing self-confidence (vv. 23-1).
His unwillingness to face the cross alienated him from Jesus and when he would all forsake Jesus, Peter declared that Jesus was certainly misinformed. If he refused, yet will not L. Our condition is most perplex when we are most sure of our safety.
1. Sleeping at the post of duty (v. 37).
In one short hour the very one who was sleeping at the post of duty had fallen asleep instead of watching.
The only way to escape from backsliding is to watch. (vv. 38).
The legitimate inference from the Lord's words "watch and pray" is that he had commanded them to pray there is so little prayer is due to the lack of the sense of need of God's help. **Migliored seal** (v. 47). Peter drew a sword and cut off an inward door of the high priest (18:10) to rest Jesus. He was thus silenced for the Lord. He was trying to make up in outward service his conscious lack **Followed Jesus off** (v. 54). Christ's rebuke for taking the sword of Jesus was a set of bad habits his set had placed him, caused him to follow off. off. He keenly felt Jesus off got him into trouble. **Warmed himself at the enemy's fire** this fire was built by those who had some unsympathetically to witness the crecitation and even to mock in the face of Jesus' promise, even attempting to get pleasures out of the things which the enemies is sinful. Many protesting and promising, even attempting to get pleasures out of the things which the enemies is sinful. Christ have prepared for them.
1. Open denial (v. 65-71)
Step by step downward the wrist until the thumb is propped open and blasphemous denial. This even by one who had said: "If should die with thee I will not die with thee." The wrist is gamed when he shrank from the cross. It was that shunning which separated him from the world. He was remembered that there can be no backsliding until there be established a position from which to slip. Many of the children of the Knights have never been born again.
11. The Respentance of Peter (Luke 12:1)
1. The look of Jesus (v. 61).
This was a most wondrous look. It was filled with the joy of Christ. Christ walked through his Peter and the other disciples would pass and he prayed for them. This was a wondrous act of acuteness of his cowardice and disloyalty with his blasphemous words of denial, and yet it displayed His power.
The look of Jesus brought conviction of sin. It called to mind his beautifultness and cowardice. How arel must have been his condition as a child, and how arel must have been, little suspecting that there would be found a way to get back into communion with his Lord. Doubtless the tomb brought from the tomb brought the first good cheer to his heart. Christ said to them: "Go and tell my disciples and Peter. This encouraged him, no doubt, in his consideration and love for him.
Two Things Needed
There are two things that they need to possess who go on pligaring; courage and an unspotted life—John Bunyan.
Seeing and Talking
Men are born with two eyes, and one tongue, that they may see twice as much as they say—Cotton.
The Holy Ghost

Thomas Paine was born in 1737 and died in 1800. Of his work called "Common Sense," he openly asserted his American independence, and was probably the most powerful pamphlet that ever existed. This same Thomas Paine may be said to have influenced the preparation and adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

TEXT- His divine power hath granted
unto all things that pertain unto
life and godfulness—I Peter 1. 18.
The Christian life, according to this
text, is completely provided for. Every
way we are pated. No emergencies can over-
whelm one who
counts his life unto the Lord.
No personally conducted
tour with life, uplifted
titles, we can be so perfect and
saint as this life upon us,
we have started.
Rev. W. T. Joyon.
There are several encouraging
facts or insecurities that I want to present to you that should enable us to live, not only in that it is insecure, but that it is increasingly joyful and blessed.
1- True Christians have the prescience of the Gospel in their lives. He who lives with us. He who lives with the Trinity. Third Person of the Trinity. The Holy Ghost animates, energizes and inspires us. He moves our feet in paths and directions which are different, diametrically different to those where He used to walk. He moves the way of sin. Now he takes us in the wollies, the Holy Ghost in our hearts. The Holy Ghost in if you will let him. I wish you could read H. W. Smith's book entitled, "The Christian's Secret of a Happy
2. The second incentive is the position of the saints of God in Christ. "Now of God are ye in Him who hath righteousness, sanctification and redemption." He has given us this new standing. We are new creatures in Christ. "He is the Lord of our righteousness, John Wesley once said, 'Never think of yourself apart from Christ.' As He is in glory today in perfect harmony with God, of hand, of God, and I have that same perfect alignment and that identical standing as our Lord Jesus Christ. Now dissociates our walk with God, brings every conscious act up to your standing in Christ. You have a place in God. You now have been given with God that makes you altogether different from what you were before. This being put into God, a new position of righteousness, an incentive to the hikers walk for Him.

"And some fell upon good ground"
The Sower, in the parable, cast his seed to the winds of heaven.
That which landed among the stones, the thorns and in the barren places, perished.
Only the seeds which reached the good ground had a chance to grow.
The modern advertiser does not strew his seed of salesmanship to the winds.
He plants it carefully in the "good ground"—in the places where because of favorable conditions it has a chance to bear a harvest of consumer results.
He uses newspaper advertising because through the newspapers he covers completely the themes which he knows, upon careful investigation, to be right places for his product to flourish.

**44 NO. TEB, there is no one talking to it:** about *me* "aid Carla, definitely," about *me* "aid Carla, definitely," about *me* "aid Carla, definitely," insisted Ted Morton.
"It would be perfectly ridiculous for us to marry. I like to swim and sail, you go cruise golf, hotels, following trails through virgin forest, camping. Now, wouldn't we be a fine married couple? Couldn't we have a happy, congenital baby?" "We're happy now," argued Ted.
"Tee-while you are so crazy about that you will live in a bathing suit and you will swim in the ocean." But, once we were married-well, you'd play golf while I went sailing alone--maybe! To argue the old question and went around the same circle again and again. Finally, he returned the engagement ring he had given her and he put it reluctantly on. Both were too young to let a mere broken engagement mar their happiness and, consequently, Carol never married. They followed their final quarrel, Ted, too, found great sport in golf tours during weekends and in the camping expedition with three men up into the
Carol couldn't stifle her love for the carol. She had been brought up on the island, where she learned to swim in sea shells. Her early friends were old fishermen who used to pick her up and tuck her in the stern of their boat, and string of shining sea food. She had learned to swim and reef and feel perfect at home in a boat. So that now, she was able to swim and string a half of the year her beloved water, it was little wonder that she took to it and the proverbal duck. She was always when town when both were impatient to be out of it. Having, for the moment, a common bond of sympathy, they had missed something they had both found when he went to the country club and back and forth to the city to business and she sought the seaside. At first, both sacrificed the hours of sport when times Carol would walk over the links to watch the players. Again, Ted would sit on the swim or swim in the water, and girl who had promised to marry him. But neither was happy. Neither was home. But just borne me to extinction, "I must be sorry to herself as she walked miles on the Railways in love of Ted and his fellow players."
"What anyone can see in sitting in a boat that taps and lifts and listens would grumble, inwardly, as he felt the uncomfortable movement of a sailboat in which Carol was gracefully diving. After four years, Carol began to wonder why it was that she failed to find again the companionship that she once had. She would come men into her world as well. This had proved not to be the case. She began, one evening as they met together in the dusk, what did you do for fun when you were a young girl? She laughed. You would be surprised if you laughed. I knew nothing so much as roughing it in a mountain shack or going with a crowd of girls into camp, gyrates we we. We would go into the woods in a mountain town and I was verably a part of the soil." "Ant- you can live to the sea?" she asked.
The mother nodded. "Tes-sour your father felt that he could not live alone. He had to be folk in New England and at first he toasted to leave my beloved wife. I found him, he was to be with me when most important to world and then when you came-I was quite satisfied with life, dear. You talked about the water, not you'r' Carol did not say much after that. You talked about the hardness of loneliness underneath the supernatural gossy of the past four years. It took a great deal of courage to deal with it."
She wrote Ted a long letter which she began with her old pet name, "Dear Landubber." In it, she told him of her experience with life at school, of how she had told him of how she had tried to be content without him. It was a letter she could not and would not have written. The teacher told her, "Ded did not want to write. He arrived inside of three days to tell her as she strolled along. The moonlit bench that no matter what she did or did not want, she felt her happiness and there alone. Carol laughed and told him that half of her was landubber, anyway, and half was her mother, her mother gave her an intimate bit of the history of her own romance. "We surely ought to be happy after wetting such a stormy sea of love"

Concerning Sta
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE COLORED
TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS.
Special to The Informer.
Beaumont, Texas—Prof. T. T. Pollard, president Colored Teacher
State Association, has given out the following statement and report
"I am sure the rank and file of the teachers of Texas has been awaiting a word from us. But up to this hour, we have had nothing of an encouraging nature to hand out. Every wide-awake teacher in this state know that there is much work to be done to refine schools out of the quagmires of prejudice and discrimination. Everyone knows that one schooling with a large measure are objects of deion, and places where the high ideals of citizenship can barely be instilled in the occupants thereof; that the equipment therein is negligible; that in most cases, the salary paid for service invites only those who are least prepared to put over the job; that the school term is too short, and that the students have too few higher institutions of learning support by the state.
"The evils above recounted can, in a large measure, be corrected through the medium of the State Teachers' Association; to but do so, the association must have funds to meet the necessary expenses entitled thereby. Since our time has been the financial standing of the association. Let me state just here that, in the solving of this problem, Prof. Jas. D. Ryan of Houston has rendered signal service. His report attached hereto will better explain our financial situation:"

Robinson, which has been made on the request of the executive committee in order that a proper transfer of the records of the accounts of the retiring secretary-treasurer, Miss Ellen A. Walls, was elected to office at the recent meet.

A careful inspection has been made of the receipt books used by the various registrars and we find 28 stubs which are blank and they all contain the number of stub receipts which specify no amounts, but they have all the numbers of registration numbers. There was perfect correspondence between the amounts indicated by the secretary as to what should be charged to each book and what the audit committee should be charged to. The cause of the custom of issuing duplicate receipts to the members of the number of registrations, 949, in apparently far below the average for previous years, but this may be due to the confusion arising over sub-

67. DISBURSEMENTS. SECTION C. PAGE 4;
Item 22, under Section C, is in excess of the amount of $146.75 appearing on the sheet carrying bills ordered to pay to the amount of $29.50, which appears in Item 23, under Section C, is in excess of the amount of $300.95 and this amount was applied by the printing bill of $835.55 already referred to. Item 48, under Section C, appears because the registration was made in the $1,000 registration class and comes in the $1,000 registration class. Item 50, is allowed because a check for $5.50 given on the First National Bank was no honored, because of insufficient funds, and the check for $5.50 given on the drawer of the chock and one other person, and to say the least, it appears that $1.75 of this amount should be collectable, and the name of the
68. THE NET ASSETS OF THE ASSOCIATION:
Continuing, President Pollard says:
"The executive committee by the following vote has asserted that Austin will be the next place of meeting. In this connection, for the information of the teachers, I wish to state that after a conference with the principals of Houston, Prof. J. W. Rice, executive secretary of Dallas, and Prof. G. W. Jackson of Rosenberg, Houston invited the association to meet in Houston. The president took the position that Houston was the logical place for the teachers to assemble in their next annual meeting. But the vote of the executive committee was 6 to 3 for Austin, Texas.
69: THE BANK ACCOUNT
Voting for Austin were: Coleman, Johnson, Holland, Waller, Rhodes and H尔德; for Houston, Pollard, Ryan and Walla.
"My personal desires shall not stand in the way of the will of the majority. I do believe that, to have met in Houston, 3000 colored teachers would have enrolled, and we would have been able to turn over to the succeeding administration sufficient funds to lift us out of our present financial dilemma.
"The executive secretary is launching a membership drive that I am squared behind. Let every teacher see to it that every other teacher becomes a member of the association. Since we must go to Austin, let us see to it that we have the best meeting in the history of the association.
We have released as soon as we can secure sufficient funds to pay for the costs of publication. We need funds also to meet our obligations with the National Association of Teachers in Colored Schools. At Dallas the association voted the N. A. T. C. $100, and at Waco $100 more was voted for the same cause. We owe both obligations, and there are not funds enough to meet our obligations. We owe the motto of this administration is, 'Stewardship is not ownership.'
