RYAN, Houston, principal Jack Yates Colored High School and supreme worthy recorder of the Ancient Order of Pilgrims, was awarded his master of arts degree at Wiley College, Marshall, Tuesday morning. This degree was conferred upon the local educator for his merritorious and unselfish service in the field of education and for his outstanding scholastic attainments in the field of letters, art, literature and science. Having taught in the public schools of Houston for 37 years, during which time he was principal of the Colored (Booker T. Washington) High School for 14 years, Prof. Ryan is known far and near as one of Texas' outstanding educators, and this signal honor bestowed upon him by Wiley College is well respected and fully deserved. Manhattan, Kan.-Prominent among the students of the Kansas State Agricultural College who were honored recently upon scholastic recognition day was Louis Browni. Fry, who is taking both graduate and undergraduate work in architectural education, Mr. Fry received the Lorentz Schmidt prize for draftmanship and lettering; and he gold medal of the American Institute of Architects, which is awarded annually to the student in architecture who makes the best scholastic record for architectural work. Last year Mr. Fry was awarded the faculty prize for excellence in architectural membership in Phi Kappa Phi, national architectural honor society. Only the upper three per cent of the students is eligible to election. Mr. Fry is a native of Texas and was formerly a student at Prairie View State College there. Minneapolis, Minn.—The election of Miss Helen Natale Jackson, junior at the University of Minnesota, to Phi Beta Kappa, honorary schlateristic teacher, was announced at the annual Cap and Gown Day exercises Thursday, Miss Jackson is the second college student ever to be elected by the chapter at Minnesota. The first was Mrs. Lillian Alexander, now of New York City. She is executivey Mrs. Mick Jackson has been on the honor roll at the University, maintaining an average of "B" or better. She was president of the college, and she is ordinarily when in 1925-36 it led all the 21 sororities on the campus in scholarship. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Madeline Jackson, 2000 Franklin Avenue, S. E., and will receive her degree in June, 1958, a period of three and one-half years after her matriculation. The accompanying news item appeared in the Houston Chronicle, local daily newspaper, Tuesday, May 31, 1927, and is another concrete example of some of the methods resorted to and employed by whites to charge crimes to the usual "black, burly Negro." Many Negroes, particularly in the South, have been lynched legally and illegally for such alleged criminal assaults; for every time any alleged offense, particularly where a white woman and the stereotyped "black man" are involved, is reported, some Negro man or youth is guilty, and either the howling and hungry mob, or the prejudiced and biased courts and juries will inflict punishment upon any black man or youth remotely suspected of being connected with or have some knowledge of the alleged "crime." Without further comment (the article is sufficient indictment against this pernicious practice) The Informer reproduces verbatim the news story from the Houston Chronicle concerning the assault hoax at Coffeyville, Kansas, during last March, when the city was on the verge of a race riot due to the report that "three Negroes had criminally attacked a white girl." Coffeyville, Kan., May 31.—With two persons in jail at Independence, action was expected to be taken here today on 12 warrants in connection with an alleged hoax that resulted in a race riot March 17, in which four persons were injured. Ira Kennedy, 30-year-old automobile salesman, formerly of Coffeyville, now living in Wichita, and Miss Juja Mooney, 19, high school girl, are held in default of $20,000 bond on charges growing out of an alleged attack by three Negroes upon Margaret Akera, 17, and Miss Mooney prior to the race riot which brought on martial law. Kennedy is charged with a statutory offense and Miss Mooney, who was to have been graduated tonight at Senior High School, with being an accessory after the fact. Two other men are to be arrested in connection with the alleged attack, according to authorities. According to the charges, based upon the report of a detective following the race riot, Miss Mooney arranged a "party" of which the Akers girl was uninformed. After the alleged attack at the home in which the girls maintained a room in an otherwise vacant house, Miss Mooney told of an attack by three Negroes, which turned the wild of citizens to incite race trouble. A thousand persons mobbed the city jail the next night in an attempt to kidnap any Negro suspects who might be held. Martial law was declared and continued for three days. Special to The Informer. Flipper and others against the Standard Life Insurance Company, seeking recidivism, was tried here last Friday in Fulton Superior Court, Judge Humphreys presiding. Negroes In Peonage In Mississippi Flood Area, Reports Confirm New York City — Negroes held in peenage in the Mississippi flood area, and prevented from leaving concentration camps without the consent of their landlords, also attempts to charge Negroes in flood relief admittened to them, are reported by Walter White in a report for the Advancement of Colored People, 69th Avenue, who has returned from a tour including Memphis, Jackson, Vicksburg, New Orleans, and other points in the flood area. Mr. White reports instances of Negroes escaping refuge camps and returning to the flooded area, clothing rather than be returned to the plantations from which the flood had driven them. Mr. White released the following statement today at the offices of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People: "In response to complaints of peenage than go back to the plantations from area to Mississippi flood area, I went to that territory and in my tour visted Memphis, Vicksburg, Jackson, were being taken out by industrial flooded rooftops. At Memphis, I talked and checked in again when their labors were finished. Most of their medical officer for the Red Cross in the flood area. Dr. Reden authors thought not paid, but they objected to the hosting, curing and killing them." "The Red Cross emphatically disapproves of any attempts to use this disaster by landlords furthest from the plantations and share croppers. As she passed the tires on the car, she noticed a woman across the street. it somewhat disconcerted her that the tall young man was looking intently at her when she stopped to look at her. She took time enough in starting to glance again at the young man, who had remained in the region of the corner position. She started her car directly down the road, then drew up beside him on the opposite corner. "I'm afraid you just missed your boy," she said. "There's another for a half hour. I'm going out that way and I can easily overtake the bus that you just missed, if you like." She bowed with a little more of a flourish than was among the young men of Daisy's acquaintance, stopper for a while, and absolutely essential for him to get the bus and that he would be profoundly grateful to her if she would take him along the highway where he must cross.
