"Nothing ventured, nothing gained" is a trite aphorism which is an patent on the prose on one face; and the man or race that never ventures, that never makes an attempt to do the unusual and unexpected, that has no faith, no confidence in his ability to do the job better than the other fellow — that man or race will never make any subservient and material gain; and he or it will go to the final rest.

Marshall, Texas.—Wiley College of Marshall, Texas, defeated Howard University by a score of three points here Thursday night, May 19th on the 10th game of the States Was justified In Sending Troop To Nicaragua. Wiley arguably defended the negative proposition. The debate was a spirited one and both teams acquitted. The event took on the aspect of a championship contest between the Southwest and the East. The teams, their respective sections, which fact caused interest to run high in the debate, also large. The large college auditorium with a seating capacity of 800 was practically filled. "unhonored, unwept and unsugged." Remember, he can who thinks he can; and, conversely, he can who does not.

Little Rock, Ark.—The lynching epidemic, which had its genesis when a mob sought to lynch Lonnie Dixon, accused of murdering a white girl, broke out anew here Wednesday when a mob of some two hundred men seized the rifles, with which they had saddened out the life of John Carter and terrorized Negroes throughout the city a few weeks ago, searched every probably hiding place for an unknown Negro who was supposed to have struck down and attempted to assault a white woman Tuesday afternoon. The woman reported that a Negro had attacked her while she was picking flowers in a strip of woods near her home Tuesday afternoon. As the report was circulated, the thirst for blood grew more acute and the mob formed for the purpose of "aiding the officers in their search." Bloodhounds were brought from Hot Springs but the rains during the evening rendered them useless. The human bloodhounds, however, took up the scent, but, like their canine brothers, had to give up the task. The officers, according to reports, were inclined to doubt the woman's story, which she had given more than one version of the affair. But it was further reported that a man answering the description had been arrested and the officers were afraid to take the prisoner before the woman for positive identification, thus another chapter is being written in Little Rock's "reign of terror" which has resulted in the lynching of one Negro, the driving away of others and alleged plans of a wholesale exodus of Negroes from the city.

Minneapolis, Minn.—The election of Miss Helen Natale Jackson, junior at the University of Minnesota, to Phi Beta Kappa, honorary schlateristic teacher, was announced at the annual Cap and Gown Day exercises Thursday, Miss Jackson is the second college student ever to be elected by the chapter at Minnesota. The first was Mrs. Lillian Alexander, now of New York City. She is executivey Mrs. Mick Jackson has been on the honor roll at the University, maintaining an average of "B" or better. She was president of the college, and she is ordinarily when in 1925-36 it led all the 21 sororities on the campus in scholarship. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Madeline Jackson, 2000 Franklin Avenue, S. E., and will receive her degree in June, 1958, a period of three and one-half years after her matriculation.
The accompanying news item appeared in the Houston Chronicle, local daily newspaper, Tuesday, May 31, 1927, and is another concrete example of some of the methods resorted to and employed by whites to charge crimes to the usual "black, burly Negro." Many Negroes, particularly in the South, have been lynched legally and illegally for such alleged criminal assaults; for every time any alleged offense, particularly where a white woman and the stereotyped "black man" are involved, is reported, some Negro man or youth is guilty, and either the howling and hungry mob, or the prejudiced and biased courts and juries will inflict punishment upon any black man or youth remotely suspected of being connected with or have some knowledge of the alleged "crime."
Without further comment (the article is sufficient indictment against this pernicious practice) The Informer reproduces verbatim the news story from the Houston Chronicle concerning the assault hoax at Coffeyville, Kansas, during last March, when the city was on the verge of a race riot due to the report that "three Negroes had criminally attacked a white girl."
Coffeyville, Kan., May 31.—With two persons in jail at Independence, action was expected to be taken here today on 12 warrants in connection with an alleged hoax that resulted in a race riot March 17, in which four persons were injured.
Ira Kennedy, 30-year-old automobile salesman, formerly of Coffeyville, now living in Wichita, and Miss Juja Mooney, 19, high school girl, are held in default of $20,000 bond on charges growing out of an alleged attack by three Negroes upon Margaret Akera, 17, and Miss Mooney prior to the race riot which brought on martial law.
Kennedy is charged with a statutory offense and Miss Mooney, who was to have been graduated tonight at Senior High School, with being an accessory after the fact. Two other men are to be arrested in connection with the alleged attack, according to authorities.
According to the charges, based upon the report of a detective following the race riot, Miss Mooney arranged a "party" of which the Akers girl was uninformed. After the alleged attack at the home in which the girls maintained a room in an otherwise vacant house, Miss Mooney told of an attack by three Negroes, which turned the wild of citizens to incite race trouble. A thousand persons mobbed the city jail the next night in an attempt to kidnap any Negro suspects who might be held. Martial law was declared and continued for three days.

PETER PREACHING TO GENTILES
LESSON TEXT—Acts 10:11-118.
GOLDEN TEXT—For there is no difficulty; for the Lord all over lord is rich unto all that call upon him—PRIMARY TOPIC—Peter Tells the Gospels.
JUNIOR TOPIC—Peter Takes the Gospels to Gentile.
JUNIOR TOPIC—AND NORSI TOPIC—Taking the Gospels to All Race.
I-CHOW THE Gospels to include the Samaritans, see in this lesson it still widening and embracing the Gentiles. Through the conversion of the Samaritans, "the word" was broken down (Ph. 24:2).
1. Cornelius (10,1,2).
1. His official position (v. 1).
He was a Roman officer over a company of 100 soldiers.
2. His character (v. 2).
(1) A devout, ploum man. (2) He was a praying man. (3) He was charitable. He gave much money. (4) He was a teacher. (5) The II. Supernatural Preparation for the Transition of the Gospel to the Gentiles (10:3-38). The arrangement. No barrier is too great to prevent the coming together of persons whom the priest meets. In order to bring this about:
1. Two visions were given.
2. The vision of Corneius (v. 3-4).
While engaged in prayer, an angel of God announced that his prayer and alms had come before God as a prayer to Joppa for Peter who would tell him.
3. The vision of Peter (v. 9-10). This took place while Peter was praying (v. 9). He saw a certain vessel containing clean and undean animals on the command, "Rise, Peter, kill and eat." Peter protested that he had been a slave and replied, "What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common."
4. A messenger sent from Corneius.
Peter was greatly perplexed over what he had seen, but not for long, he said, "I will not be in doubt in inquiry at the gate for him. The spirit informed Peter of the matter and bade him go, not doubting, and he entered into the court of Corinthus and Peter (v. 23, 38). (1) Peter took six witnesses along (1). (2) Corinthus waited for Peter (v. 24). He called together his kinnes and men (1). (3) Corinthus about to worship Peter (v. 25, 30). Peter reputed his act and protected him, but a man (1). (4) The recrocal explanation (v. 27, 38). (1) **Harry's Sermon** (v. 34, 42). 1. The introduction (v. 34, 45). he showed that God is no respecter of persons. This does not mean that he was not a man of grace, thereby saved, but that he was able to hear the gospel and accept the terms of salvation. 1. In the discourse he touches briefly upon the mission of Jesus, showing that he was not alone in meeting with the Holy Spirit. He was qualified for His work as mediator. He then exhibited the work of Christ:
It was one of beneficence. He went about doing good, even casting out proof that God was with Him (r. 88). In His death (r. 30), he murdered for that suspect that he might be killed for I (P. 1.813). In His resurrection (r. 40, 41). In this discourse is set forth:
(a) The basis of salvation—the命
(b) The scope of salvation—who-soverever believeth in Him.
(c) The method of appropriating the命
IV, The Holy Spirit Poured Out (vv. 44-45).

the *Formal* How tapping to exchange the greater for the less that makes for things vague and unapproach able. Lock of spiritual traction. Makes a blighted the thing of God Rev. Van Gorkom. It is only when the lens is cued that the true image is reproduced. So it is that Spirit. "The photograph of His face is fixed only in the dark chamber." Jesus our goal, the object of our spiritual focus. When upon the distant mountain things nearer have little attraction for us. So the things of earth when we fix our spirit upon the Author and Perfector
The author of the Book of Hebrews throws open the portal of his heart and admits us to three great truths about God, the one of our faith, the one of our faith, the first, the testimony of Old Testament smits. In it is set forth what is called the set in rest for what. What was it that made their testimony so unnatural? Why did such faith and强度 radiate from God? Why did those honored ones centered on Jesus before He appeared in human found? Herken lay their magnificent hands to them through their faith without realizing the promise, namely, the Reasoning and operating in a light dimmed by unfulfilled and unrealized prophecy. But just as a man who was one day born in the desert, who had been by chance looked up and beheld a star at daynoun of the blue canopy of heaven, so these smits of old, because they were the stars of Star through the imperfect light in which they found themselves. Looking unto Jesus because of what Old Testament smits.
The second, a Consciousness of the Reality of Possible Hindrances. "Let us look at the point. Do not permit the downward current of life to throw our soul's vision out of focus with the earth, and unreal the blessed face of our Lord. Persons suffering from weak muscles, in complete restoration of physicians to look at the distant hills for certain periods each day, resulting in complete restoration of the spiritual realm. Surely our souls must shrivel and our spiritual sight must be blurred. We are permitted to intrude upon a clear vision of Him who is the Light of God, and of an over-concentration upon these Oil Testament saints instead of upon Jesus Himself who in will constitute the real structure of our Lord. Note well that this passage emphasizes the desire are to look into Jesus ultimate.

"AFTER A THOUSAND DIFFERENT THOUGHTS ONE FIXED PURPOSE"
BY AD SCHUSTER
(COPRIGHT)
EROY PRENICE and Bernice
Boyd were among the most proud
among the children of the
ambitions to be famous and together
they talked of their dreams. It was
not surprising the elders accorded a
million dollars to help them love
in the minds or the talk of the
two.
ERoy was confident that with a little
metropolitan training he could
succeed as a painter and illustrator,
and Bernice was equally certain able
to be a great writer.
The artist needs to meet the
world and see life. I think I will
go to New York.
The agreed agreement "It is the
humanity with writing. I must see
him in all its aspects, feel the pulse
of a great city, and then—and then,
I will write as I have never written before."
The Japanese Admiral was ordered to find and destroy the Russian fleet. What was he to do? He milled around, fearing, doubting, planning thinking; but did nothing. Then, after much churning of thoughts in his mind, he decided upon his course. "ONE FIXED PURPOSE" ended the Russian-Japanese war and put the Japanese on the military map.
he was the first to go, but she was not long in following. Her met her at a hotel, where she was already at home in the big city, helped her and a room in the district to find a place to prepare to resume the regular order of Wednesday and Sunday evening calls, but Brenna had other plans. She said, "but moving to New York with me is a great and serious step." She was hindered by friendships and uninfluenced by anyone opinion or advice, and until we make our names at least, we are not to see each other. "We have shown her the roo and the aquarium, had wanted to show her he know his way about. Yet, there was his work."
Robert Bruce had been defeated a second time. His forces were scattered. He was a fugitive with a price upon his head. Disappointed and discourage he dared not even visit his friends. When he seemed completely swallowed by the abyss of defeat, he looked up one day and saw a spider busy above him. Idly he watched it, trying to span the distance between two beams. Time after time it failed, but its persistence riveted his attention. Six times it failed but the seventh attempt brought success. The stubborn purposefulness of that spider challenged Bruce. He arose with a new purpose: to free Scotland. He came out of hiding with nothing but a stubborn purpose, but that was a compelling force. It was catching and all Scotland rallied and rode to freedom on a "FIXED PURPOSE."
Throughout the ages individuals with a "FIXED PURPOSE" have taken their places in the fore ranks and held the respect of their fellows.
He smiled when he thought of the work before him, making pictures of the people he had seen, the traits of famous persons, all right, and he would have something real to report to herdes. In his room he was sitting on the floor, to be placed on the following Wednesday, and when that day arrived they them under his arm to the desk.
The drifters stand aside to let the purposeful individual pass. Go out on a crowded street and watch how the crowd opens up to let a man pass who walks as if he has a purpose and is going somewhere.
Leroy stood by while the posters were being placed, surveying them in the room. He saw the faint feat. This was not what he had heard. "What would Berrice, the famous learner, have been blinding in his letters? He turned quickly, for some reason, behind him. There in the ticket case, looking at him as she one never looked
As a group, what is the PURPOSE of Negroes of Houston and Texas?
She returned his surprised maze savely, and there was no need for equipment. She was so confident and who had written of so many triumphs was selling tickets. She was so confident that she won't out of his reach. He leamed to talk through the little "Lovey," she whispered, "it's goo." She was so confident that she won't do better work—together.

Negroes In Peonage In Mississippi Flood Area, Reports Confirm
New York City — Negroes held in peenage in the Mississippi flood area, and prevented from leaving concentration camps without the consent of their landlords, also attempts to charge Negroes in flood relief admittened to them, are reported by Walter White in a report for the Advancement of Colored People, 69th Avenue, who has returned from a tour including Memphis, Jackson, Vicksburg, New Orleans, and other points in the flood area.
Mr. White reports instances of Negroes escaping refuge camps and returning to the flooded area, clothing rather than be returned to the plantations from which the flood had driven them. Mr. White released the following statement today at the offices of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People:
"In response to complaints of peenage than go back to the plantations from area to Mississippi flood area, I went to that territory and in my tour visted Memphis, Vicksburg, Jackson, were being taken out by industrial flooded rooftops. At Memphis, I talked and checked in again when their labors were finished. Most of their medical officer for the Red Cross in the flood area. Dr. Reden authors thought not paid, but they objected to the hosting, curing and killing them." "The Red Cross emphatically disapproves of any attempts to use this disaster by landlords furthest from the plantations and share croppers. A is given directly to the very white civilians, in many places. The interesting problem to see that attempts by landlords and others to get checked when such relief is given is checked when such relief is given is placed the levee would break. Refugees after they have returned to
"In many refugee camps, however, Negroes are released only to 'their' plantation from which they came. This fact was confirmed to me by General Vickers of the Mississippi National Guard troops who are keeping order in the area covering reefs in the Mississippi Gulf of Mexico, Yasoo, Warren and Holmes counties and all of Ishaquean, Sharkey, Green General told me that plantation owners come to the camps to pick out the animals that are kept from the camps, 'no man being permitted to talk to any other but his own Negroes' virtual imprisonment of Negro flood sufferers to prevent escape from the plantation areas in Mississippi, published in the Vicksburg Beding Post of May 5, in which
"A meeting of the executive committee of the Citizens' Relief Committee of the City of Houston, Mullen, direct-in-charge of Red Cross relief work here, held the day before the delta section not overloaded, coming to Cleveland with the view and family from the camp and place them on their own plantations, was thoroughly discussed and considered, and the committee agreed to one with whom they have previously contracted for the year, was placed in the camp, and the committee consented of the landlord from whose plantation the laborers came, or on the personal request or authorization "At a number of camps I was told "Negroceiding guarding and escaping clothing and medical attention rather WATTS NERVE TONO for wake clothing and medical attention in the back, run down condition of the nerves, lost vitality; for men and women. Price for men and women. W, Watt, B, 1871, Houston, Texas."

"Some of the Negroes did not even know that their own bodies belonged to them," he said. They they said that it could be done only after their plantation houses gave them the power to plantation owners objected we had to tell them "Bishow you will permit us to plant the Red Cross" in "my talk with responsible heads of the Red Cross I was impressed with the quality of the training and the ability but of course individual subordinates in doing the work do not always know the spirit of the Red Cross. The attention of the central administration is always on the plantation."

Daisy, the Little Flirt
By JANE OSBORN
(Copyright,)
DAISY DREW drew the corner in DARE when the highway crossed Main Street in Hinton and drew her next car, which lightly from her seat and walked rapidly round the car, glancing at the trees. As she passed the tires on the car, she noticed a woman across the street. it somewhat disconcerted her that the tall young man was looking intently at her when she stopped to look at her. She took time enough in starting to glance again at the young man, who had remained in the region of the corner position. She started her car directly down the road, then drew up beside him on the opposite corner. "I'm afraid you just missed your boy," she said. "There's another for a half hour. I'm going out that way and I can easily overtake the bus that you just missed, if you like." She bowed with a little more of a flourish than was among the young men of Daisy's acquaintance, stopper for a while, and absolutely essential for him to get the bus and that he would be profoundly grateful to her if she would take him along the highway where he must cross.
"my name is Schuyler Wentworth," said the young man. "I am a stranger here. I am not a stranger, but a bit of property—which I find is located in—in at the end of the bus line." "Barbury," supplied Daisy, "Well, that a half hour by motor—must be more than an hour by bus. I'm quite sure we can catch up with the bus, if we can get there." "Not in the least," assured the young man. "at breakneck speed, but they went on, getting fruit conversation out of the objects they passed on the road. Daisy found her self showing down. Of course, there was a lot of fruit, and would catch a bus, because the last bus had gone nearly an hour ago and it was within five minutes time of the fruit looking stranger at the corner. It had been a rather hold thing to do, Daisy agreed with them—it wasn't important, but take them driving along and take them behind her and take them driving along the highway—but the young man驻坐 beside her in her car, and if he by any chance was a desperate or dangerous character Daisy felt that he was not safe. Her own hands had ever advantage.
Barbury was in sight—and the bus had not been overtaken. It was a car parked in the house, two gas-filling houses, two gas-filling churches. The young man had indulged in a meal, and the church. Obviously there was not much business to be done there. "Here we are," Dalley told him. It was a car parked in the house, and she butled him that if his business wasn't going to take very long she would wait and carry him back to Hinton, assuming of course that he was going to take care of the young man did not even get out of the car. He looked at her courtiarly and explained that as a matter of fact he was going to take care of the young man to the surprise, the girl at the wheel showed no sign of resentment. She drove back into Hinton in a car that because mutually embarrassing. "I take it for granted that you want to go back to Hinton," said Dalley. "Perhaps you have friends there?"
"Not unless I might count you as a friend," said Schuyler. "The Ract is not a friend." Barnhill in my life until this morning. I was motoring from New York to Ohio and this morning I found my mother. She had a grieving trouble which I could not attend to. I left my car in a garage and started for a little stroll. That was when I thought I thought you had had a puncture. "Really, I did," said Daisy. "I only stopped my car because I thought I was going to the men we meet here." "And you don't exactly hate me because I let you think I was trying to get the bus?" asked Schuyler. "And I thought I was getting to get the bus. Only at the time I couldn't think of any better excuse to talk to you." Barnhill from the road shaded of her long enough to look at him with a little pout of annoyance. "And I suppose you'll start on your way as soon as we get back to it."
"Not if you let me stay and—and get a little bit better acquainted. As you get used to it, you get the matter with my car. I just left it there. I had seen you earlier in the room. I put my mind on that I wasn't going to leave the place until I knew you better. I think it was a case of love at heart. I can't tell you how glad I am that you feel that way about it." and I wonder how that way about it all by myself."
Native American
Muskrat are purely North American animals. Their long scaly tails, which act as ruders when the stocky animal drinks water, says Nature Magazine. There is little danger of extermination at present, though their fur has been assimilated used under various trade agreements. Their body is 21 inches weight two pounds.
Large Breed of Rabbits
The gray Flenish bird is the largest rabbit breed by American fancies. They attain their full development when they weigh at least 18 pounds or the backs should weigh 18 pounds or more and the does not less than 15 pounds. The rabbits are known as "deepup" well developed.
He Is a Fighter
All the Cassowaries are inhabitants of forests, and are strictly diurnal. Their diet consists of nearly six feet in height when erect, say Nature Magazine, and with its powerful legs and sharp claws, they are excellent hunters. Defend itself against most adversaries.
