Our typesetting is done on the latest model number 14 Mergenthaler linotype, which gives us faces rapping from 6 point body type to 30 point newspaper headline type. This linotype is the last word in typesetting machines, and will take care of both our newspaper and job work. Already, our force has been considerably increased, and we are now living decent and lucrative employment to 11 members of our race, including three officials of the corporation, who have rolled up their sleeves and are working: in any and every capacity to the end that the organization might function smoothly and successfully. Whenever a man's wife or sweetheart dons a new-dress, she naturally expects her husband or lover to notice same and tell her what he thinks about her livery and finery; and we are not averse to receiving a word, either of commendation or censure, concerning the new dress worn by The Informer last week. We plan to give to the reading public and advertising clientele a bigger and better paper, and last week's edition was the beginning in that direction. The size of the paper was also increased, which made it possible for us to carry more news of the reading public, and, as soon as we can begin operating all our facilities, we shall endeavor to prove that The Houston Informer is really and truly "America's Greatest Weekly Newspaper." Houston finally landed lodge 101, lodge of the Whalams and Calcutta Lodge of the Whalams, and suggest that the local loges organize their forces as early as possible and work year after year; and, in the selection of general chairman and committee chairmen or chairwoman, care should be exercised to ensure that the loges have their fitness and ability to put over the job, rather than upon the fact that they are not the loges lodge or court, or may be friends to some of the leading local Pyrian men, more to see along this line later. THE HOUSTON INFORMER NEGROES WIN HONORS IN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGES Boston, Mass., June 16.—Thirty-five colored students have and will receive their degrees and graduate from the colleges and professional schools of Boston and vicinity this year. Some of them won distinction in letters, music, and athletics during their years. Adlas Lola Wilson, daughter of Att. and Mrs. Butler R. Wilson of Boston, received exceptional mention in music at Radcliffe College for girls. She composed the choir song of the school. Miss Thedora Boyd of Springfield won her letter on the varsity hockey team of Radcliffe and starred on the basketball team. J. Randy Taylor of New York City was awarded a medal for being the best student in the college college. College students this year. He was a star on the track and field team, scoring high for his school in all intercollegiate sport competitions. Five colored girls received their LLB. degrees from Portia Law School. Bortk, with offices at 402 Old Follows Temple, is being graduated by his many friends, since it he began teaching. He was a stalwart referred, but not named, in an article which appeared in one of the cases he had been discovered and who, after calling in the chief quintime officer and other white doctors, had the victim of this homicide located at Carryville, La. King Solomon Grand Lodge Held Interesting Session On Monday, June 13, 1927, the gavel sounded, calling to order the Most Worthful King Solomon Grand Sister, the Most Worthful King Solomon Grand Lodge. No Segregation In Detroit Schools (By The Associated Negro Press) Detroit, Mich., June 16—Because of discriminatory tactics about to be employed by the officials of the High School of Commerce here in regards to a pleasure outing which was to have been given for the graduation class of that school the attestation of the M.A. A. C. P. known as the "trouble prompt action of this organization halted proceedings forthwith," requested to put up $1,000 for the outing, which was done by the colored students, as well as the other. A the school officials are reported to have informed the colored students that the school hopes to go on that seventy-five money could be returned to them and they could remain at home. Ark.SlayerHeld Little Rock, Ark.-A white man has been arrested on a charge of killing Crawford Grisson. The white, Roy Smith, was bound to oversee the killing. Griffon was found on the Sweet home picke Friday night by passerby, and taken to the General hospital, where he died about an hour after his arrival. The wounded American died in detectives that he had been held up by two youth at the Biddle shops, and when they searched his pockets and found nothing, they became angry and struck him and told him to give the h-1 out of here. He said he was in the charge of the man shot in the back. He identified Smith as one of his assailants. Victims of Mad Mob Coffeyville, Kansas, File Court Action Woodmen to Hold Meet In Kansas City, Mo. Special to The Informer. Coffeyville, Kan.-Close after the arrest of a white girl for conspiracy to incite race riot growing out of the riot which occurred in this city several months ago, were both filed by colored persons who were victimized by the rioters. The latest suits were filed by Curtis Smith, barber, and Vanges Harden, both of whom were held as suspects in connection with the attack on the girls. The girls were gross committed on two white high school girls, resulting in the riot on March 17. Smith filed claim with the city commission asking $500. damages for involvement in the riot to crawl through the rafters of the cupola of the city hall to escape the Great Insurance Organization to hold District Meeting June 20, to June 25 Kansas City - Kansas City is preparing to receive the district meeting of the American Woodmen fraternal organization. June 20 and close June 21. More than 500 delegates and visitors are expected to attend the session. Prairie View, Tex.-The summer session of college is beyond their normal range and Industrial College has an overwhelming attendance. All facilities of college are taxed beyond their normal range. More than 1,000 students enrolled in the various courses offered at the college, including the college, the college authorities are doing everything to accommodate everybody. Because of the rooming quarters at the college, a college counselor is compelled to find lodging in Horton Texas, six miles away, as well as in the college and community resident schools. To stand the situation and have begun their class work with unusual interest, students natural sciences, home economics, agricultural mechanics, arts, nursing, mathematics, history and science. Hughes, as it was during the regular session, many students will be denied admittance because the college lacks sufficient dormitory accommodations to meet their needs. Carson, a distinguished surgeon of nautical and aviation unique and in a notable example, Dr. Carson has taken out a $2,000 grant from the University Medical School as the beneficiary. In doing this, Dr. Carson exemplifies the importance of would follow his example and assume their lives for a large sum as posed in the grant. The National Association for the Advancement of Colorized People, 65 Fifth Avenue, has received a report from Neval Thomas, President of the Washington, D.C. Franch. stating that at a benefit: organized by the Branch $710.65 was raised for colored sufferers from the Mississippi floods and is being sent to the New Orleans Branch of the N. A. A. C. P. which has volunteered to administer such relief funds. Mr. Thomas in order to rouse interest in the flood relief benefit, nightly addressed crowds at the largest theatres in Washington. The benefit was given with the co-operation of the Howard Theatre and among the stage stars who contributed their services were Miller and Lyles, Evelyn Preer, Edward Thompson, Salem Tutt, Whitney and Maybelle Ridley, Gertie Jackson and the stars of the "Lucky Sambo" Company. Negro Author Writes of Trial Ibn Rahab New York—In the June number of The Messenger, a Negro magazine published in New York City, Mr. J. A. Twenty new patrolmen have already made their appearance in the city, and it is said that thirty are now in town. The police will will make up 70 race policemen in this city. THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 1927 WHY NOT ARREST "POLICY GAME" OWNER Last week we discussed in this column how Negros are made the scape-goats of white criminals and others who want to violate some law or social usage, and we cited at least three incidents, one of which related to the arrest of two Houston Negros in connection with the "policy game" which has been doing a flourishing business in this community for the last several months. During the week another Negro was arrested, and, one reading the account of the arrest and paraphernalia discovered and seized in the arrest and raid, would readily conclude that this game is being operated by Negros for Negros—that it is nothing more or less than a criminal activity. Thus another black man has been made the scape-goat for some "higher-up," and it seem to The Informer that the district attorney's office Harris County grand jury" the constabulary and police officers of this county "the policy game," and arrest him or them, instead of these periodic arrests and convictions of these black underlings and scape-goats. It is beginning to appear as if some crooked work is being done in certain local quarters, or is politics back of all this dogmatic shrimping and "passing the buck" now going merrily up in this community. With all the stool piglets, pimps and informers (we are not alluding to this newspaper), isn't it possible to apprehend the real "villain" in this recent community scourge? Or is it possible to put this policy that, if Negros owned and operated these "policy" devices, the "law" could not put them out of business overnight? If Negros actually owned and operated this gambling instrument, how many persons believe that the law enforcement officers would be able to arrest and检实 and arrest fine? The Informer is making no charge or accusation, but this paper holds to the opinion that certain local Negroes, who are being employed to fleece and mutilate their racial brothers and sisters out of their hard-earned cash through the operation of the "policy game", are nothing but scape-goats, and that they are merely being employed to extricate somebody else's chestsmuts out of the fire. GOING AFTER SUPREME PYTHIAN LODGE At the recent grand lodge session of the Colored Knights of Pythias held in Austin, the editor of The Informer, himself a "brave boy," introduced a resolution to the effect that the Texas grand lodge extend an invitation to the supreme body of the Pythias to attend the next biennial supreme meeting in the Texas jurisdiction; and the grand chancellor was empowered to employ what means may be necessary to bring this august body to the Lone Star State. Under the leadership and guidance of W. S. Willis, grand chancellor, the Texas jurisdiction leads all other Pythian jurisdictions, and The Informer feels that this state deserves this consideration and recognition. There are at least two cities in Texas (Houston and Dallas) under the leadership and a gathering, and it would be a splendid thing for the order and Texas if the supreme lodge should meet in this state in 1929. There are many members of the order who have no conception of Texas, nor the members composing the fraternity in this state, neither are acquainted with the type and calibre of people, nor who make up the population of the Lone Star commonwealth. If a tree is judged by the fruit it bears, then certainly Texas is entitled to a high rating; for her sons and daughters of ebony are national leaders in many fields of human endeavor, and some of them are members of our racial contingent are products of the Lone Star State. Furthermore, former Texans are not the only people doing big things in this country, for we have plenty within our domain yet who are accomplishing big things and demonstrating to the world the importance of our ability to consummate a constructive and far-reaching program. Texas has many Negroes of wealth, culture, education and refinement; men and women of letters, science, art and professions, and its colorful leadership compares favorably with that of any American city. The state has no other man who visits Texas and observes for himself what the black race is doing in this state, can leave its confines without admitting the greatness of the state and its ebony-hued sons and daughters. Prejudice generally obtains where misunderstanding is rife, and when people understand each other better, meet and mingle on a common level, much of the prejudice is dissipated, and new prejudice is built. Not only will the supreme lodge of Pythians bring to our state and people much that will be helpful and beneficial to our group and the social order, but the supreme body and its constituents will also be mutually benefited and helped. The Informer of Texas will be the most faithful of the Traitors, holding their next biennial convention in the Lone Star jurisdiction. The Houston Informer America's Greatest Weekly Newspaper FLOOD DISASTER A "HELP" TO NEGROES By WILLIAM PICKENS (By the Association, Nassau, Pa.) As soon as we heard that the Mississippi river had decided to get out of bounds this year, like every other state, we were South. We knew exactly what was going to happen to the colored people there without waiting to see it happen, and we immediately wrote the president of the United States and warned him that these things would happen unless the national government exerted some control over them, by appointing some courageous colored men, responsible to the United States government, to look after the Negroes of that Mississippi Valley. Well, the president wrote us that he was sending our letter on to the Red Cross and the "dicatter." You see, our president is a very cautious person. He doesn't want that one's name of his business. Then the somebody to whom the president sent the letter, wrote us that he was going to be very careful to thru several other evolutions, until finally got a long and very heavy quarters, Memphis, Tenn., signed by the president, or of flood relief. It is a good and frank letter, encouraging in its disclosure that it contains the information we call it, and assuring us that the treatment received by the Negroes in this disaster is "much better" than the Negroes under normal conditions." The most impressive thing about the greatest disaster, actually the greatest regions, is an IMPROVEMENT on conditions of its Negroes under no conditions of its Negroes under no conditions of need be written: that one sentence is complete commentary on the "civilization" And that does not prove that the Negroes are being treated well, now that they are being treated with relative value. We have just read from a daily paper of paper of Greenwood, the perfect paper of "informational" for the colored refugees; Negro women and girls and guarded; Negro women and girls and receive any rations that unless they have no man in the family, "which fact is not known to them," who is apt to know least about colored families, and where there is a dollar a day for a work (for women, a dollar a day, for dollars and ten cents a day), a dollar a day for their any rations, whatever the number of the Red Crescent in other words, the Red Crescent is being Negro men to work for white people workers; Negroes and only white men are to be conscripted to unload and to work for the provisions for everybody, etc. In other words, the flood and the Bad Cross are to be used to reduce the Rain Cross and make them in any way more dependable in favor of their "good white loot." The difference is better than the "normal condition" or the "normal condition" is plain hell. RE-FORGING AMERICA "BI-RACIALISM" By William Pickens (For The Associated Negro Press) Lethrop Stoddard has written a book, *Forgiving America*, and the two chapters, *Bringing Color* and *B-Racialism* is a nice book to apply to our disregurable past, but it does not endure—and then shows over and over again that he does not think so. For Pickens, the book must be good, having not the brassier tone that *Narrogr* travel accommodation must be good, having not the brassier tone that *Narrogr* travel accommodation must be good, having not the brassier tone that they must be equal. He knows that separate and equal accommodations for blacks in a contraction in terms that if Negroes were equal, they could not at the same equals, they could not of as "separate" even on public Like Kelly Miller, he thinks that the school district and work for racial segregation. He resurrects the old chimera of "back chin" education, "just adjustment" is just a school adjustment. He believes that racial intermarriage should be made a crime at law and he expresses the fear that under such new color women might "blacken" men. He evidently does not know Mississippi and how the "faw" there intermarries with the "white" once more, what whites do once more what whites do. One of his arguments for law against intermarriage is that it is his argument for it. His book is filled with that information and the poor fellow still imagines that the terrible restless mulatto that the Negro opposes in selection which the Negro opposes in employment under-man in America. Poor white men. The mulatto is his Frankenstein.—The mulatto is his Frankenstein.—Nowhere does Stoddard even mention the under-man fact: that all the economic basis the desire of the stronger to live as much as possible in the white world is the economic advance of the Negro the economic advance of the Negro the inter-racial situation not Stoddard tries bluff as vigorously as Kelly Miller tries sophistry to force the Negro to accept segregation. He speaks of “explosions that will be terrible for the Negro”: he pictures the white man as an admirable beast who will brook no interference with his desires and his passions. He says that the Negro must accept segregation—and he shows that he fears that the Negro will not accept segregation. His fears are wiser than he is. Passing Parade Don't believe in signs, eh? Some, while ago he did desert politics to join the church, who join everything these days, has joined the chorus of pietistas who committed a crime by accepting a job and leaving his place in the church as a politician—was a politician he got into the bishopic, was politician he was bishop, and was politician he was bishop, and comes to an end—a politician, first, last and all the time. If he had been politician he never could have "captured" the bishopic; he had to outdo all the other politicians in the position after that same position in the church. Now, the time for Kelly and the rest of the pack to have made their cry was when Carey "deserted" politics for the church. That was the call to the Bishop of The Bishop is now coming back home, just where he longs. Commissioner Carey is much more appropriate (for him) than Bishop Carey. He will do just as much good for his "race" and for all others in the Chicago office as he would do in the office of a bishop—more good, we think. And so far, do a sight more of good for Carey. He would not be failure on either job.—but we wish to predict that he will make more money in four years of commissioner than he would make in the school. And those who will lose the cash which will make as commissioner are much better able to lose it than are those who would lose the cash which he would make as bishop.—That's stripping the truth naked. But, there are many more men who can fill his place in the A.M. E. Church than there are who can fill his place in the city of Chicago. He can be of immense service to Negroes as commissioner of civil service in Chicago—if he tries to. But, there are no a preacher of the same right to ahead in the government (and the emoluments) of his country and city as have other folk? It is an outworn superation that preachers must eschew politics. If Christians and bishops are better than other people politics will be better when we get more Christians and bishops into it. We are not only glad that the bishop went into this political office, but we are also glad that he stayed and be mayor of Chicago and pick out some others from an amass of people whom we would recommend that Commission jobs in his department. They would not be such a big part of them, whom we are poor ministers would be. ROCKDALE Rockdale, Texas—Delegates from the district convention have returned from Eagle Lake, reporting a fine session. Rockdale retains the treasurer, J. M. Beals, and Rev. G. T. Burley was re-elected president. Good attendance at all the Sunday schools Sunday. Rev. D. B. Burrow preached to a large audience at Springfield, both morning and night. Miss P. E. Manson returned from the convention very ill, but is said to be improved. Mrs. Demy Dobbin is much improved. Rev. S. C. Smith left this week for Austin. Prof. D. S. Shanks will open summer school July 1. Several teachers have gone to Prairie View College for the summer session. Truck farmers, as well as others are smiling since we got a good rain. NEGROES OF NEW YORK AND CHICAGO (By KELLY MILLER, Howard University, Washington, D. C.) Some time ago, I wrote a release on the Chicago Negro. I tried to point out there the singular achievements of the colored contient of the Windy City. New York has now become the Negro metropolis of the world. The lowest estimate gives the metropolis two hundred thousand acres, but the highest estimate gives it a rival. By tradition, the New York Negroes have every advantage. A considerable number of the old citizens trace their descent from Revolutionary days. They have enjoyed, in the main, essential advantages of political and civil equality with other citizens. The fullest educational opportunity is provided by the schools. The anti- slavery contest waged fiercely therein and stirred the energies of colored brother to blood sympathy with his kinmen in bondages. The original population has been gradually re-enforced, and suddenly augmented, until it stands at the head of the column of all municipalities. In the two cities, alike, the race is sharply segregated in clearly defined areas. The black belt contains ninety per cent of Chicago's colored population. Harlem contains a like proportion of New York's colored contient, if we may except the Brooklyn group, which for our purposes, may as well be called the African-American group. Of Harlem and Brooklyn are as far apart in all essential ways as those of New York and Philadelphia. When we speak of the Negroes in New York we mean Harlem; just as we mean the South Side when discussing their Chicago counterpart. In both cities they affect to despise segregation, and they have no interest in it. Both groups are derived from their segregated situations, and yet they both shake the impotent fist of defiance when the term is mentioned. Chicago is a comparatively new city. The Negroes for the most part are newcomers. Although they say that a Negro was the first settler of Chicago, yet the great bulk of the present population, like the wild man from Bornso, has just come to town. The too have had a large measure of the Negro population, and the too have had a large measure of the people without regard to race. Neither group has been subject to the many political and civil restrictions which held their blood brothers We should naturally expect New York to far outatrip its western rival in any list of comparative accomplishments. But to the chagrin, the people who are the leading members of the American Association of the Library of the Literary and cultural capital of the race heads up in Harlem. The Crisis of Opportunity is the Messenger, our leading monthly magazines, the local media, the New York Times, with its own name. We should be the Urban League, and the Young Men's Christian Association have their cigarettes to be so many. For the first time, poets, fiction writers and essayists, delights, love, news, and other life-long stories are the great publishing houses are here. The Negro literatist, like their white proletariat, were here and the world of the world. Advocacy and facilities of publication. One might expect that Washington's city with its old city is the town of University, would become the literary and cultural capital of the race. But the place of the atmosphere is not congenial; the political current sweeps everything before the But New York can lay claim to this cultural ascendency merely as the altus but not as the stimulus of it. If Harlem should be stripped of her literary combands, she would scarcely excel her Western rival in cultural attainment. The political accomplishments of the two groups can hardly be discussed in the same breath nor on the same day. The only outstanding political personages in New York are seen in the case of Hon. Morton, civil service commissioner, a Tammany appointee. On the other hand, Chicago was the only leader of the state of New York. The state of New York is not so far as the capital fact; in Chicago he is an active political factor. He sponsored the present city government, and as much as any other element, was responsible for the state of New York. The state of New York is the only major project in the municipal campaign, the victorious government is not unmindful of the just claims of its black allies and rewards them with the unknowable rights command. Similar results in New York are hardly thinkable. The Negroes in Chicago take full political advantage of their segregated status. The American community of politics has been the most扇目，the dominant element. In Harlem, the United States was the most�ent to the local white boss. In Chicago, they play a role in the field of the state of the United States. The white boss has a great philosophy. Whenever one Negro loses, another wins. In New York, if the Negro loses the white man wins, which is practically all of the time. Chicago will doubles send a Negro to Congress within the next four or six years. The stage is already set. Congressman Madden has stood so long as to take the place of the United States. The first of the time was the dominant element of the country. The Windy City has rained the ground of color. He has also gained such prominence in national affairs that he can be of greater service in some ways. He has been a block of blacks who are more likely to be resented in Congress by one of its own blood who will peak with the power of the state. He will be a part of the country. He will always not merely South Side Chicago, but the continent. Although the future is not just the numbers, it has neither the leadership nor the coherence that would justify a like prediction within any calculable time. Economically, Chicago is as far ahead as it is politically. The Windy City has now trying hard to organize such a financial establishment. Chicago boasts of the finest Negro hotels in the world. I am not sure that the city will be so good as to be as backward in business as the two hundred thousand Harlemites. Harlem has recently developed a number of great churches; but not to be outdone. Chicago has gone her one better place. It has never heard of a place as handed down to them through initiative. Very few of the people who are�ared down to them through initiative. Very few of the people who are a church. They take over the abandoned houses of worship and the city build a church. The Chicago has just taken over the greatest Negro church beneath the skies. The Negroes in Harlem are for the most part cliff dwellers. Home ownership is relatively small as compared to Chicago. One walks for a straight stretch of street, and the buildings are these, occupied by their Negro indwellers. If Harlem is the "Nigger Heaven," Chicago certainly inhabits the thoroughfares which more nearly approach the streets of the New Jerusalem. To cap the climax, Chicago over matches Harlem as the seat of ecclesiastical life. The church, the pastor, the historians, has his cathedral here. I suppose that Bishop Carvey, if he decided to cling to both spiritual and temporal power, will rank first among his ecclesiastical colleagues. The Methodist Episcopal Church, if I might go on forming an indefinite church which Harlem would come out second best. Wherin he secret of the strength of this lusty Samson of the West? Must the eastef East forever lag behind? Let our Negro social thinkers ponder over the tale of these RULES FOR HAPPY MARRIAGE Seven rules for a happy marriage are prescribed by Judge Joseph Sahabt of Chicago, in the current issue of Collier's Witness. It records the history of Collier's Witness and what is said to be the world's record in having presided over 22,000 divorce cases. "There must be rules for every game," says Judge Sahabt.
