Negroes Want G.O.P. Harmony RESTRAINING ORDER DISSOLVED By C. F. RICHARDSON DALLAS’ REGULAR FELLERS NEGRO HEALTH WEEK Boarding the Sumbeans, the newport, dawned on the Southern Pacific lines from Houston to Dallas and Fort Worth, last week. A. G. Purtkins of Galveston, H. L. Mims, H. P. Carrier, and N. Dudley, Jr., all of Houston, this columnist and statewide conference call by the Independent Colored Voters’ League of Saturday morning followings. Upon our arrival in Dallas our party was met at the station by Editor Secretary Clark of the Negro Chamber of Commerce and their official photographs in the Python Turtle Museum where we found some of the advance guard, Judge R. D. Evans of Waco, ready in the city. By telephonic communication we soon got in touch with the Lowden field instantiants, who had merely availed himself of this opportunity to meet a wide circle of the state. Before removing to New York City several years ago, Mr. Chickens the championed Dallas and environs, and, like the ancient warrior, after defeating all cones and gorers there no other pages and pseudo-pups to battle and defeat. A group of contested Dallasites, headed by the championed Dallas, pointed to the federal district embracing W. S. Willis, H. A. ("Pops") Strickland, W. Willie Ewing, W. Rice and W. S. Willis, cells in the city might face a courtmenity committee. To be brutally frank, when it comes to entertaining visitors those Dallasites are “regular fellers.” Sunday, April 8 - Report and Follow-up Day. HOUSTONIANS AT PARLEY Houston was well represented at the statewide conference held at Dallas, last Saturday, under the auspices of the League of Texas, viz: Rev. R. E. Harrison, Rev. J. E. Kox, O. Dedley, Jr., of Houston SEGREGATION IS DALLAS PARLEYCITED TO HOOVER BACKS HOUSTONRELIEF SOUGHT MAN TO KC MEET New York City—Herbert Hoover, United States secretary of commerce, has granted a hearing to a committee which protected to him against the use of the Nuclear Energy and, according to report from Neval H. Thomas, president of the Wash. State Energy Commission for the Advancement of Colored People, Mr. Hoover has promised to investigate the entire situation. "Secretary Hoover granted our committees, composed of Messrs. Nelson, Pinkett and Johnson, a heartfelt complaint against segregation in the census bureau, where there are 18 competent counsel, segregated in the census bureau of houses, and sub-chief. There are also five colored clerks confined in a room by large building of this same bureau. "We presented arguments against segregation and the whole injury it caused," he said, sympathized with our protest and that he didn't know it existed in his department. He said he would look at the department and that he disapproved of segregation. "We then told him the small number of Negro clerks in the main building, and we told him the number in this vast structure, only three are colored. We told him of the superior education in the civil service because the whites of their calibre could get far more remunerative employment. We told him that the civil service adhered to the merit system, there would be dozens more of Negro clerks appointed. We told him that into the whole situation and let us know. He sent me a letter yesterday, may that the director of the census department be informed that he is taking the case under advisement with him." We reported that the Washington branch of the N. A. A. C. P. and allied groups are seeking to obtain some definite statement in the treasury department. DECLARE PEACE AMONG FACTIONS AT LITTLE ROCK Little Rock, Ark. —(ANP) After twelve years of exclusion of Negro Republicans from the various councils of the state, a new election action was rendered to the demands of our citizens for equal rights in all county and township counties. Pulaski County Publication Convention with 168 members of the black and tan township councils met in the township mere Auditorium to select the 20 delegates, to the Fifth Congressional District and state convention and to name members of the county central committee. Negroes were given one-fourth republican votes, and members of the Judge Schapil A. Jones, who recently organized the Negro Republicans of Pulaski County, were given a fight for recognition in the national convention at Kansas City in June. Harmboy prevailed throughout the meeting and the Negro Republicans in all county conventions to be held in the state. They will be elected delegates in all county conventions and will serve on all committees. The state convention will be held at Russellville, May 3, and the delegates will be called "big four" to the national convention. RE-ELECT DAVIS COMMITTEEMAN; ALSO DELEGATE Atlanta, Ga.—(ANP)—At the recent state convention of the Georgia Republicans held here, B. R. McCormick, a commissioner, returned to his place as secretary of the Republican state central committee and assured us of one of the delegates at the convention to be held in Romeo City. O. P. DeWALT, Houston, owner Lincoln Theatre, "South's finest race playhouse," who was endorsed as delegate-at-large from the state to Republican National Convention at Dallas last Saturday. COHEN'S BATTLE TAKES NEW TURN; SUITS ARE FILED New Orleans, La.—(ANP)—The factional fight between Republican members of the Republican state central committee developed another angle when Wal-Mart filed a civil district court against M. F. Dastugue, et al, asking the court to give control of the committee to the Republican state central committee, not just the Dastugue faction from interfering with the Cohen committee. An allege that the Cohen committee members were legally elected members of the Republican state central committee was the defection of their election was filed with the secretary of state. It is known that the Cohen committee claim to have been likewise elected and that the Dastugue members from the civil court preventing the Cohen committee from exercising the functions of office. The suit against the candidates be declared the proper and only Republican committee, or service office without interference. TO TOUR TEXAS DURING APRIL The official tour of Mrs. Joanne C Snowden, national organizer the Women's Club, which will cover Texas during the tour. Mrs. Snowden will tie to Tyler, Dallas, Fort-Worth, Glencore, Waco, Corsicana, Marlin, Arizona, Galveston, and Galveston, leading to information received by The Informer from the organizer. Burnett of Cliburst, state organizer. DELEGATES BALK AT SEGREGATION ALANS AT GOP MEET Washington, D. C.—(ANP)—to the fact that Negroes hold the balance of power in several Northern states, it is believed that her Secretary Glieson's letter stating that the Negroes had no vention in Kansas City would be quartered at the Y. M. C. A., instead with the whites, will be recalled. The announcement contained in Glennson's letter brought a howl of disbelief at the announcement that it was believed that the Negro delegates would be more comfortable with the idea that the city was pointed out by Ferry W. Howard and Ben J. Davis, national committees from the Southern Conference, that when Kansas City was selected it was with the argument that there would be no "aggressive" Gothic man. Texas Baptist Brotherhood: I am writing to ask you a question as men of your race and as leaders, as constituents of your church and as Christian men who believe in Jesus Christ. I am asking at this late day, have you all gone crazy? or have you lost sight on our Savior? Can't you see that your plans and methods for the last ten years have been an open failure? We have not religion and sense enough to stop, turn around and take up your not religion and sense enough to stop, turn around and take up the good of the people for the good of the church? We have been dragging along as a demonstration doing not religion and sense enough to stop, turn around and take up the good of the people for the good of the church? We have collected $250,000 and have nothing to show for its value. We have collected $250,000 and have nothing encouraging—nothing tangible to look to with the kind of men are attempting to put on the people. You say you are going to make a presentation, bring the paper here, to show you how uneasy and how unthoughtful you are, and go to Hall on Howard Street made you take the paper out of this town and you go to Hall again, now you are going to bring that same paper back in the town from which you has been driven out of town. "The Baptists of Texas must be revolutionized and renovated. I know that revolutionizing is very exciting. I take the position that if Rev. E. L. Harrison is not regarded as the president, then we have no president, because he was elected by the man who was the president of the people is the voice of God." Our Baptist Association The Northwest Baptist Association richest region, most prosperous region, with the highest class of Negroes of Texas in it, a class clam of Negroes of Texas, founded by Dr. A. R. Griffin, Brown and myself, a splendid school, with 200 students, with a budget of $2,500, Baptists; with more than 100 churches, little and large, with the administration of the R. E. Arlington Wilson. The school is closed, the school is closed, the beautiful church at Sherman. The school failed under this reverend. R has not been able to reopen this church. THOUSANDS IDLE IN CALIFORNIA San Francisco, Cal.—(ANP) —It is estimated that, more than 170,000 men are out of work in California. They are borne on the board commissioner's office. It is the greatest number since 1921 and affects the state more deeply by reason of the lack of employment were able to subsist on earnings saved from the war prosperity lined in San Francisco and hundreds are being fed daily. In Los Angeles the men are less organized and actual hunger is said to exist there. Rev. E. Arlington Wilson, pastor of the "groud" Macedonia, the great pupiliter, the splendid orator, a great teacher, the splendid orator, the time, but he can't make the grade in Northwest Texas Association still. Should have raised $20,000 for missions and education last October and instead of that they raised about $10,000 for them you are trying to put that same man at the head of the Baptists just before you leave. In answer to the many letters I received from students, his good looks, his oratorical ability, his eloquence as a speakee, his build us colleges and schools, his financial ability, with some financial ability; he must be able to deliver the goods. He is the trouble with us, I being the pastor of the school, and the pastor of Macedonia Church, Yof say why not let's take everything for myself. My friends, you cannot do anything when you are self-conceited. There is nothing in this world between us. I love him as I do any other. He is a maker; but he lacks business qualities and tact to build up a great community school. The Baptists must get right. Selling the property at Houston and doing away with the Houston Mission is one of the biggest challenges to 140,000 Baptists. I, for one, will serve notice on you now that I am an apostle of the Mission and will still and wait until you sell and then there are enough of us people who are opposed to it, who will go into the church and buy the money as soon as it hits the ground. I just want to see if those people are opposed to it and they are. People are urging me from all over the state to stop the distribution of those gentlemen from doing anything they are big enough to do. The Mission Mission is disturbing those gentlemen from doing anything they are big enough to do. The International Mission chartered, and under the charter the board of trustees cannot do anything they have done. The Mission Mission is not invention. The Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention has never ordered the board to sell or distribute money to them or anywhere else. But they did order them to borrow money and erect churches or posed of churches and associations. They elect messengers to go to this body and there to deliberate for Before the school can be sold, we have to have it authorized by the church through the school who come up to the convention to do it. This can be done. It will not be carried out by the school, carried out of course, the lawyers are hungry and want money and will do things to draw out these long liabilities because it makes business for them. Let us hope and trust and pray for the betterment of the condition. Mix condensed milk and coconut. Fold in egg white. Drop by spoonfuls on a well-buttered pan. The Bible offers an opinion of Bishop Manning here in an address delivered at Carnegie Hall, Monday night. "For my own part, the bishop decried that I had not succeeded in something of the question for I have lived and worked many happy years in the fact that the first two children I ever baptized were little colored babies, a class of colored people, and the first church I consecrated was for a colored congregation. The children I ever baptized were a class of colored parish and the first bishop at whose consecration I assisted in the essaying to raise $150,000. LESSON TEXT - MARY 2:17-24 GOLDEN TEXT - Whoever will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cresus and follow Me. PRIMARY on the cross and follow me. THE PRIMARY TOPIC - Jesus (the Great Beta). (1) "The Son of Man must suffer physical wretches. He suffered physical wretches and hunger, ridicule and contempt and even misunderstanding, and he suffered the chief priests and saints." These were the nation's official representatives, the very ones who should have known the mission, and even the chief priests and saints. His reception on the part of the nation. Truly He came to His own and His own received Him not (John 1:11). His reception was starting to the disciples. They had not yet come to realize that redemption was to be accomplished through the passion and the cross, and that the sufferings of the utterly incomprehensible to the disciples. He showed them that this would be the glorious issue of His death. 2. How the disciples received His teaching (v. 32). So unwelcome was His teaching to the disciples, the spokesman of the disciples, reined Him. Peter later saw through thinness the light of glory on the hilted arm. He rejebels Peter (v. 33). Peter later plainly that his attitude was due to his being under the influence of the devil. He went to Jerusalem to Die (Mark 10:23-24). Jesus went to Jerusalem with the consciousness of the world tragedy of the death of John, the fiery persecutions of the priests, the unjust judgment, the mutilation, the murder, the scourging, the beating, the cross between malfacultors, the nails and the spear all were spread out, not by external necessity but by a fixed purpose. He had not only come to minister but to give His life a chance to look at the victory which was to be accomplished through the shedding of blood led Him forward (Heb. 12.2). **I. The Cost of Discipleship (Marcus 1.8)**. The law of the Christian life is suffering. To follow Christ means to turn one's back upon the world. To be Christian means to hate the war of the world; to be Christian means to share Christ's suffering. There must be denial of self (3.1). Only Christians deny self; between self-denial and denial of self. All people practice self-denial, but only Christians deny self; between self-denial and taken up (t. 34). This means the suffering and shame which lie in the pathway of self; means suffering (11 Tim. 3.12). 3. Christ must be followed (v. 34). This means to have the mind of Christ (Phil. 2:5) and to perform the work of Christ. The closed issue of following Christ is life of fraternity here and now, and eternal life hereafter. THE GROCERY BUSINESS IS BASED UPON FREQUENT TURNOVER OF STOCK AND SMALL MARGINS OF PROFIT Some Tables that Should Help One To Direct His Efforts Accounts in Department of Commerce figures, there are about 6,000 Negro business owners in the National Negro Business League comes the disquieting information that far too many of our grocers are doing less than a thousand dollars a month. Here, evidently, is a situation that needs a very considerable improvement. A perusal of the study of operating expenses of retail groceries prepared by the Harvard School of Business Administration based upon a survey of 1,000 grocers that are close some information that should be helpful to any merchant in that line. The most important finding revealed is that there is a very small margin of profit in groceries that of merely 1.5% being found to prevail. The business success is entirely dependent upon turning over the stock as often as possible during each year. Seven times seems to be about as seldom as a store may turn over its inventory and continue to sell. The average turnover is about 1.5% surveyed. Even if one has but a small stock, he can take his profits and turn the invested money back into more stock ten times each year, the turnover that is, if efficient methods to keep down expenses are used right along. Where Money Comes From Staple groceries and canned goods are found to constitute 55% of the sales in the average neighborhood store. Fresh meats account for about 29% of the business done. Fresh fruits averages make up another 20%. Fresh meats and fruits account for about 20% of meats and bakery goods create the balance of the hundred per cent volume. How the Money Goes Out One must watch the expense of do it will shrink to the vanishing point authorities for the average costs armors; $8% boxes and wrappings; $8% dage; $2%, rent. $1%, heat and light equipment; $2%, total equipment; $2%, total interest, $1.1% from bad debts; $4%, total expense, Grow margin possible in meeting project requirements; any one of the fixed costs exceeds a make an effort to balance the budget to a uncharted direction. A uncharted direction of paring these percentages with the fit for himself is he doing business and the Item of expense may be the sum that should be set aside in the annual budget for expensive things prepared. The Item of expense may be the sum that should be set aside in the annual budget for expensive things prepared. The figure submitted everywhere and to all businesses; and taxes vary with the community the whole figures may be accept one of the phases of business practice are negligent, is the matter of advice and the public gate by and the public gate by and by having it placed jobs and makers of heavy advertising is to invade disaster. Better One must watch the expenses of doing business, also the margin of profit, which is to the vanishing point. The table set forth by the Harvard Institute of Business Administration is as follows: Total salaries and wages, 10.9% of gross sales; advertising, 3%; boxes and wrappings, 8%; delivery, 1.2%; office supplies and postage, 1.1%; insurance, 2%; repairs to store equipment, 1%; depreciation of store equipment, 3%; total interest, 1.1%; miscellaneous expense, 8%; losses from insurance, 2%; gross margin possible in meeting prevailing prices being 19.8%, the net profit is but 1.8%, which is ample if there often enough turnover. Where any one of the most excesses the average mentioned, it is well to be aware that the net profit may be reduced in some other direction. The record of his business may be comparing these percentages with the figures for his own business, determine for himself if he is doing business upon the generally accepted average and expensive things for which one might otherwise be unprepared. The item of depreciation may be explained by saying that this figure is the num that should be set aside regularly for the purpose of replacing equipment and furnish when they shall have worn out. This prevents an organization from expensive things for which one might otherwise be unprepared. Of course, the figures submitted above are not absolutely applicable to all businesses, but they are generally and taxes vary with the communities, and so do some other items, but on the whole these figures may be accepted as a practical guide to a grocery store. One of the phase of business practice in which our merchants too often are negligent, is the matter of advertising. Progressive merchants keep up with the latest trends in advertising, and the public gate by newspaper advertising, handbills in the immediate neighborhood and by having it placed on advertising matter sent out by the press. The commodities. To neglect advertising is to invade disaster. Better too much. THE SEASON OF BUSINESS CONVENTIONS On March 10, James Puryear assumed the management of the hotel Lincoln in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Puryear's wife, who for some years has been married to a businessman, has joined her husband in Cleveland to work with him as his assistant of the hotel. Puryear is new to the hotel business, but is a trained business executive, a realITY operator, cashier with Murray Brothers Printing Company and a real estate broker. Puryear is an insurance company. He is a native of Tennessee and enjoys several friend connections with major organizations. He should make the Lincoln as public as it has been with the theatrical profession for some years past. LINDBERGHING IT FROM LOS ANGELES TO SAN DIEGO, CAL business, else the margin of profit. The table set forth by the Harvard vet at from studying 548 such stores and 1,250 others; 1.25% office supplies and post power, 3.2% taxes and licenses, 4.2% payment, 1.3% depreciation of store influenza expense, 3.8% losses prevailing prices being 18.8%, the net haul is often enough runway. Where the cost of a store exceeds the costs by making an unusual effort to record of his business may, by con- gure for his own business, by con- gure upon the generally accepted average explained by saying that this figure is equally for the purpose of replacing hall have worn out. This prevents an for which one might otherwise be in a store are not absolutely applicable these stores are, and so do some other items, but as a practical guide to a grocery in which our merchants too offer entertising. Progressive merchants keep have for sale constantly be advertising on advertising matter sent out by traditional commodities. To neglect ad too much than too little.
