L., Holley, secretary of Tuskegee Institute and Greenboro Business League, pointed out many significant facts to the students at Bennett College for Women in his chapel talk Friday morning. Pointing out the fact that the two largest enterprises in America are the Poro Company of St. Louis; and the Madane Walker Company of Indianapolis, and that likewise 85 percent of the business in the country controlled by the women of the household, M. Holley challenged his hearers to give attention to the economic life of the race. The big problem, he said, "is that business, building an economic foundation." Moton To Address Tuskegeeans At Detroit Meeting Detroit, Mich.,—(ANP)—Dr. Robert R. Moton, professor of the Tuskegee Institute, will address the graduates at the regular meeting of the National Tuskegee Alumni Association, which will be held at the university to an announcement made by Jesse O. Thomas, president of the organization. The dates of the meeting have been changed from June 19 and 20 to June 20 and 21, in order to make the convention more convenient for a large number of attendees. Evoking the prophecy that this convention will be very largely attended, the local committee has arranged an event to be held at the university including entertainment features of unusual interest. The men seized are: T. H. Hayes, wealthy undertaker, and an ex-president of one of the banks which became the Solvent Savings in a big merger; the Solvent Savings in a vice-president; and P. W. Foster, bookkeeper. This brings the total number of former officials grasped by the law up to eight. Hayes has with embellishment, frasulent breach of trust and larceny of $21,403.35 from the Solvent Savings Bakh. It is charged further that much of this money was converted to his own use. With the Republican precinct and county conventions out of the way and delegates having been elected to the Republican State Convention which meets in Dallas, Texas, May 22; and with the results of these conventions showing the majority of Texans, who participated in these said conventions, favorable to the presidential nomination of Honorable Herbert C. Howell, the Republican National Convention at Kansas City on June 12, 1928, it appears to The Informer that the Republican factions or rather in Texas should get together now on a harmony program and not go to the national parley with a contest. It was to obviate the necessity of another quadratic contest and internal wrangle that the "harmony resolution" was adopted at the statewide conference held under the auspices of the Independent Colored Voters' League of Texas, at Dallas, Texas, March 24, 1928, when the convention went so far as to indicate its preference for delegates-at-large from Texas to the national convention of the G. O. P. While it is true that this action on the part of this statewide conference of colored citizens was not binding or obligatory upon the delegates, it was a mighty fine feature for those between and representation for all warring factions on a fair and equitable basis. If the Republicans of Texas are to make a commendable showing in November for the national ticket and their gubernatorial candidate in this state, it will be well to work out a harmony program before, not after, the national convention; for it has been The Informer's observation that wounds made in June, when the contesting delegates are denied seats in the national convention, would result in only the "ins" supporting and voting for the presidential elections and state legislature, while the "outs" remain away from the polls or vote the Democratic ticket. Since Texas will be represented by 26 delegates and 26 alternates at the Kansas City convention (52 representatives in all), it does appear to this paper—which wants to see harmony and the resultant large vote polled in the November election for both the national and state Republican tickets—that some program can be projected and consummated between now and the Dallas convention. This would allow for differences and make for party solidarity and unity rather than for internal bickering, strife and bitterness. Whether for an instructed or uninstructed delegation, from this angle it is apparent that the Hoover supporters and backers will be in control of the state convention on May 22; and if the state party instructs its delegates to vote for Hoover and invokes the rule, even though some concessions are made by the party chiefs to some of the so-called "insurgents" very little, if any, damage to the state convention. If, rather than such a stroke would be calculated to harmonize those belligerent factions and give the state a united Republican party in the general election. In this connection, the Informer again suggests eight delegates at large from this state with one-half vote each, instead of the customary four delegates with one vote each, and four alternates. The Republicans of Oklahoma recently pursued such a course that they thereby adjusted amicably internal differences and contentions. It will be rather difficult to persuade voters to support the national and state ticket of the Republican party in November, when these same voters are not accorded what they think is a fair and square deal in June! The welfare, success and perpetuity of the Republican party in Texas should be paramount to the political ambitions and personal interests of voters. The biased, biennial and quadrilateral bickering, fights and schisms occur within the ranks of the party in this state, no appreciable headway will be made towards building up and maintaining a virile, robust and functioning Republican party in Texas. Without the sacrifice of any partisan principles or the desertion of the Hoover cause and standards, a program of harmony can at least be presented to the warring groups; and if these opposites do not accept the olive branch, then will be responsible for whatever befall them from a partisan and political standpoint. After all efforts towards effecting and maintaining peace have proved futile, then war is inevitable; but until the Republican leaders of Texas show, by their actions, that they prefer accord to and concord; strife and bickering to harmony; war to accord; tyranny to united believers; that they will employ rare judgment and uncommon wisdom by getting together and burying their differences at home, and not washing and airing their dirty linen before the contests and credentials committees of the Republican National Convention. The Informer is not backing up on its pro-Hoover attitude, for Mr. Hoover is still our candidate, and this paper believes, as it has done throughout this campaign, that air Hoover is the most available candidate the Republicans can nominate for their national party. Hoover instructed delegation from Texas to the national party, but electing delegates in May for a national parliament convention, one thing and getting out votes for the same ticket in November is another proposition. Real political organization can be maintained without appropriate voting strength, and at all. The Informer's honest conspiracy that the Republican leaders in this state waste too much effort even for the national convention instead of putting forth of berecum proportions to build up a strong and Texas—a party which will command the respect The Houston Informer IS "SOLID SOUTH" STILL "SOLID?" In withdrawing from the race for presidential nomination by the Democratic party, Senator Thomas J. Walsh, Montana, has given quite an impetus to the formidable candidacy of Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York; the senator vining out a statement that it is apparent to the county. That the Democrats of the nation prefer Al Smith as their nominee. In writing to the senator, issued by the Gotham governor and outdistanced the entire Democrat's field in California, the home of William Gibbs McAdoo, whose remaining in the race for presidential nomination by the Democrat in 1924 against Governor Smith, prevented the New York chief executive from landing the coveted goal, and who was backing Senator Walsh in the California presidential preferential primaries. It seems that Senator Walsh's name was entered in California by the McAdoo forces, but the Smith forces rolled up such a tremendous vote for the popular Empire State governor that Walsh and McAdoo got together and issued the celebrated post-mortem petition to the governor, which affirmed that Smith is the choice of the majority of Democrats for the presidential nomination. With state after state instructing its delegates for Al Smith and with an assurance that Smith will enter the Houston convention far in the lead of any other aspirant or "favorite son," will the "solid South" remain "solid" and to try to defeat the nomination of the strongest man the donkey party can select as its standard-bearer? Moreover, if Governor Smith is nominated by the Democrats in June, will the "saint-Similius of Dixie desert the party and support the Republican candidate," and then the religious rancor, bigotry and intolerance and back Nominee A Smith in the November presidential sweeps? It is a serious indictment against a section of the country, which has been loyal to a party since its inception, to have an unwritten law that no man residing in said section has been or ever will be nominated by the party for the highest office within the American electorate. If the South is not traditionally "set" in its ways, politically and otherwise—it would have a real voice in the nomination of the presidential candidates of the Democratic party; but since the national Democratic leaders know that the "solid South" is always "solid" (whatever that term designates and denotes), they simply manipulate the South as a political tool and partisan doormat, to be used at the chest of party leaders, whether the South is willing or unwilling to the transaction. In other words, in the Eastern and Western Democratic parties mind that Al Smith is the logical man for the presidential nomination, the South will be cailed and given a soporific political portion and lulled into its quadrennial slumber, only to awake later and discover that its solitude, instead of being a healthy asset, is in reality a serious liability, which has led the South to wellnigh political bankruptcy—at least from a national aspect. It is mainly amusing to see some of the anti-Smith Democrats of Democratic politics "dry" question and long on imbibing the "wet" stuff, yelling themselves hoarse about Smith being "all wet" and "too wet." The Democratic leaders deal with the "solid South" in a similar manner, nominating the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of their choice without consulting the "solid South," and then putting their candidates on the official ballot for the election. They approve; for the Democratic party, they approve; for the Republican party, they only such nominees placed on said ballot—not in amanner sufficient to even jeopardize the "solid South" remaining "solid!" The Informer is not a supporter or adherent of Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York, but this paper is amused and ticked at the actions and anties of the "solid South," which is now try-manufactured under the defeat Smith's nomination under the guise of a ministered endorsement to the Houston convention, and other ruses and subterfuges. Even the bringing of the national convention to "Heavenly Houston" was another political stroke on the part of Democratic leaders of the North and East, who thought it good sop to the "solid South," and, recognizing the South for its solidness, to nominate a presidential candidate from some other state such candidate down the political throat of Dixie Democrats! Despite the anti-Smith sentiment supposed to be so prevalent in some of the Southern states, Texas not excluded, if the New York governor is nominated at the June parley, the Informer yokes the assertion that the "solid South" will still be found in November, and voting blindly, as in previous years, for the sole Democratic presidential nominee, "the solid one" in OPINIONS MADDEN University, Washington, D. C. THE MIRROR DOUGLASS SCHOOL WINS LOVING CUP, INFORMER AWARD The faculty and pupils of Luckie School, J. P. Jones, principal, a most crafty man, attended the May festival, Tues afternoon, on the school campus. Several new and old students, to the decloration of the "quen" and "king", and to the delight of a large crowd attended the ceremony of the birth of both brothers and sisters. The closing number on the proclamation of Luckie, Blackhour and Daughan schools, which proved to be a battle of the hearts, was Blackhour having withdrawn from the contest. The first prize for the victory was Blackhour having溺尸 the loving cup, donated by the Houston Informer, was, after three weeks, donated by the loving clan, and it fell in the lot of little Booker T. Hayes of Daughan School, Little Linda of Luckie.
