CALL'S 19TH ANNIVERSARY
SELING FEDERAL OFFICES
The tenth anniversary and pro-
gress edition of the book, City
(Ma), Call event and edited by
A. Franklin, former Texan, reached
our nannies Monday, committing of
55 paper letters of excellent read-
ing matter, display advertising, cuts,
et cetera.
For several years Mr. Franklin
who billed the printing and non-
paper games at Denison, was engaged
in job printing business in Kansas
City, and he needed the need of a real, live race newspaper
in that section of the country, and
the CIMB its sail on the journalistic waters.
Its growth and progress have been phenomenal during the decade of its establishment in Baltimore in the country of the leading newspapers of the country, with one of the most modern cities in the country, created by the county in the country having recently installed a Goss high speed newspaper press.
The race are steadily employed by this Missouri publication, which has a large circulation in Kansas City and the country. Mechanically and editorially, The Call compares with other metropolitan race newspapers, and its pulling volume of display and classified advertising carried in its columns every week.
We are a news newspaper published in the North, or the country, carry more advertising lineage than the Call, and to Joseph B. LaCour, manager of the volume of display and classified advertising carried in its columns every week.
We take this opportunity to extend felicitations to Frater Franklin upon the attainment of his tenth milestone in the field of journalism, and we will present his honorary degree, growth, expansion.
The activities of the senatorial investigation committee and one of the federal offices of the United States Department of the state of federal offices in Mississippi and Georgia, where colored Republicans were literally arraigned a horse's nest, politically speaking, and many are charging that it is merely a plan to discredit the party partisan leaders of Negro extraction.
Leaders of Democracy May Select Negro To Oppose Race Nominee
First Illinois District May-Witness Hectic Race For Madden's Seat in Congress—DePriest's Forces Ready For Battle—Victory Seen For Colored Congressional Candidate In November.
Chicago, Ill.—(ANP) If the right man can be found, Oscar DePriest, out-in-front Republican candidate for congress from the First Illinois District, may shortly find himself staunchly opposed by a Negro Democrat. Conferences with white Democratic leaders have disclosed their willingness and, in some cases, their desire, to further their party interests in the November election by placing a Negro Democrat on their ticket in an effort to beat DePriest.
These white Democrats are now seeking to learn what will be the possible attitude of the Chicago Negro toward the Democratic county ticket at elgion time. They have the precedent of the mayoralty election of 1923, when Negroes voted large majorities for William J. Dever, the Democratic victor, to indicate to them that situations can be arranged to bring about a reversal of the normal Republican Negro vote. Can what was done in 1923 be repeated in 1929 in the United States?
Two phenomena that have interested Democrats have been the results of certain straw votes for Hoover and Smith, and the reported wavering and insecurity of the colored Republican leaders.

Little Rock, Ark. — (ANP) —A real, honest-to-goodness Democratic organization was formed by the Templary when 250 prominent citizens, headed by Dr. J. M. Robinson, met at the Mosaic Templars Temple and organized a local branch of the National Negro Democratic League.
The officers of the newly organized body are: Dr. Robinson, president; P. H. Jordan, vice-president; J. W. Douglas, secretary; Benjamin Henderson, treasurer, and D. M. Wells, Wash Jordan and Dr. Joseph Hickman, members of the executive committee.
A effort on the part of few dyes-in the-wool Republicans to throw the proverbial monkey-wrench in the machinery was frustrated, and the meeting was harmonious throughout.

It is admitted that the Negro is for Thompson and Thompson's ticket when the winnings, but in the last election, they were overwhelming. The Republicans whose names come before the voters in No. 4 were principally from the former faction—the Republicans who has always played a sort of cat-and-mouse game with Negro political enemies are mostly Slaves, that despite what may have been steered the Negro by way of Fred Landin, a Slave who has been a good friend to the enemies are a cold bunch. They lack passion, zeal, and spirit. They are too meticulous. They have never been able to win. They don't look like winners. N. A. A. C. P. To Test Newest Texas Attempt To Disfranchise Negro
Decisions of Federal Judges Hutcheson and West of Texas, To Be Attacked In Court—Subterfuge Similar To That In Other Southern States—Plans Already In Motion To Combat Action.
New York City—Immediately upon receipt of the news that Federal Judge J. C. Hutcheson at Houston, Texas, on July 24, had ruled that political 1 parties may prescribe their own membership qualifications and that the Democratic party therefore can bar Negro voters from participation in their primaries, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People set in motion plans upon which work was begun some months since to combat this newest attempt to bar Negroes from these primaries. It will be remembered that the N. A. A. C. P. won one of its most signal victories in the United States Supreme Court in March, 1927, when, in the famous case of Nixon vs Hernon, that ruled unquivocally as unconstitutional a statute passed by the state legislature which declared that "in no event shall a Negro be eligible to participate in a Democratic election held in the state of Texas."

Federal Investigation and Indictment Seen As Move To Overthrow Negro's Power in Dixie Republican Party- May Cost G. O. P. Votes.
As soon as the supreme court had thus eliminated for all time this means of disfranchisement, efforts of federal court construction, and finding some new means of achieving the same ends without conflict with the federal constitution, have been made at time that such a step would be taken. Shortly afterwards, a legislative enactment allowing an enabling set which sought to give to the various political parties in the state the right to preside should be members in such parties. The N. A. A. C. B. P. began at once the nomination of the attorneys to prepare for the combating of the new law when test cases were received in June 11, when clipped copies sent by J. R. Morris of San Antonio branch, which contained statements by certain officials of the Democratic party, the groves would probably be excluded from voting in the July 29 primaries. Washington, D. C.—(ANP)—Declaring that the charges preferred against him by the senatorial investigation committee were unfounded, Perry W. Howard, former special assistant to the attorney-general of the United States, characterized himself as a martyr to Negro leadership in the South, and the investigation as a means of overthrowing the power of Negroes in the Republican party in the South, in a statement released recently.
Mr. Howard was indicted on charges of peddling federal patronage, along with several other prominent Republican leaders in the South, and his brother, Mr. Howard made bond here in Washington and the leaders who are reading in Mississippi were granted a change of venue.

POLICEMEN AND FIREMEN QUELL HARLEM MOB
New York City.—(ANP) -Firmer and policemen joined in an effort to quell a riot in Harlem Sunday night which was precipitated by the arrest of John Donald, 3288 Seventh Avenue by a white traffic policeman. The police officer colored man and his wife in their apartment at 559 Lenox Avenue, earlier in the evening.
About seven o'clock, Donald with two other men went to the home of a woman named Robert. All of them apparently had been drinking and they went to Chadwick, a town said to be a friend of the three. When Chadwick came to the door, they demanded Robert. It was in vain that the police officer named "Robert" lived there. They tried to push past him into the apartment and when they came in their faces. One of the three caught up a hammer which was on his shoulder and dragged her. Chadwick wife came to his assistance, and when the three caught sight of her they seized her and dragged her away, screaming, with Donald in pursuit. He overtook her on the third floor and struck her, she says. Then she ran into apartment of a neighbor, darted to an open window and screamed for

Patrolman Charles Kubell of the traffic squad, gave chase and overhauled Donald at 1538 Street from the sidewalk and attacked the policeman. He went down before the police and also retreated from the sidewalk and attacked his companion, whom he tried to use as a shield against the kicks that were thrown from the nearby homes, and as a patrolman. five cents for an orange may appeal more to older adults than for thirty or forty cents a dozen. But how about the price of an orange that the price is too high. We do not hesitate to pay five cents for a very small walnut meat and sixty cents to a dollar a pound for such foods that are more expensive than an orange beside five cents' worth of walnut or more than worth of many of our other stables, and we will see that even at sixty cents a dozen are not particularly high. Howard's Prosecutor Disclaims Political Motive Behind Action
Washington, D. C.—(ANP)—Declaring that she was actuated in the prosecution of Perry W. Howard, Mississippi Republican national committeeman, by no other motive than that of doing her duty as a law enforcement officer, Mrs. Mable Willebrandt in an interview Wednesday with a representative of the Associated Negro Press, insisted that she would not be swerved by public opinion or political pressure from her program of seeking indictments and convictions wherever graft was found, no matter how big and powerful the person involved was or what his racial identity. Public attention has been directed toward Mrs. Willebrandt recently because of the militant attitude and eager zeal she has shown in her post-convention prosecution of charges of selling federal offices in Mississippi, a practice which, in the absence of a federal judge, has been ruled and other Southern states, is reported to exist in most of them.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA
While it is understated that most present day state political organizer must be levied upon patronage, the practice has been extended last year, sponsored by Southern senators for the express purpose of trapping those who lived upon federal land. The levelling of attention, however, upon Mississippi where the long history of slavery survives and Georgia where a senator was born, has given rise to the widely expressed view that the real purpose of the Niger leadership. The absence of prosecution in other states that far seems to emphasize the role of senators.
"It will not discuss the Perry-Hard matter, because it would be both difficult to out information regarding a pending case," Mrs. Willebrandt said in an interview presented by A. N. P. "and, while I deeply regret the turn the matter over, I deeply regret the turn that many know that many will perhaps interpret my activity wrongly. I simply am following the rules of the criminality and graft wherever evidence of it is laid before me, as I am finally ready to do so." While as an individual I have espoused the cause of Hertzert Hoover neither that fact nor that party will affect my official attribution. Mrs. Willebrandt, whose grapping with the red hot problem of Southern political attention upon her, presents an interesting picture. Evidently in her middle shirts, alienated from her hair and cool gray eyes, this woman by sheer force and ability has the means of justice is entirely feminine in her appearance. She has none of the masculine manners used in her appearance, and lawyers, until she grows excited when poking her chin and lip with a finger for emphasis. She has the Causesa habit be smiling with her lip
"I'll write my answers to these who I can answer," she said as the interviewer laid before her the type-written list of questions, promising that aair and impartial presentation of her replies would be given. Here are the questions and her written replies: 1. What steps are being taken to make similar investigations in other

2. Ordinarily we understand that you were any special reason for your initiative in the present Mississippi patentee case. (No answer given.)
3. He had said the prescribed all graft.
4. It is reported that you personally visited Washington before going to Mississippi and that you have expressed an opinion that the Republican party is the most likely white people. (Answer: "No, but it should be in the hands of honest people white or colored.")
5. In Bloxius, we understand you are quoted as saying that "you have the right to run the Negroes out of the Republican party in Southern states so that you run the Negroes out of the Republican party in Southern states so that you direct the policy in the matter of seating delegates." It is correct? (Answer: "No.")
6. The chairman of the content committee at Kansas City, did you direct the policy in the matter of seating delegates? (Yes, I presided and defended majority action taken.)
6. Under the rule of the Republican national committee, delegates Wurzbach faction followed this rule or procedure. The Craiger faction ruled on the basis of their being seated? (Answer: "The reply to this question is too involved and technical to animate." The Craiger faction of the Texas case and you can read the opinion upon which it is based") and that was at Senator Leonor's office. 7. Do you feel that the raising of the patronage question in Southern states is the most advantage to the Republican ticket? (Not answered.) 8. That most of the Negroes in Southern states are Republicans and that they constitute 85 per cent of the party, do you believe that denying them representation or voice in Republican conventions or an office or any other office in the ranks of the party, just? (No written reply was given, so the question was not asked.) 9. That my grandfather was wounded four times while serving in the Union

SEEK TO DISBAR
NEGRO LAWYERS
Jackson, Mits.—(ANP)—Steps designed to disbar Perry W. Howard, national Republican committee member, to disbar members as members of the Jackson bar were taken here Wednesday when a committee was appointed by Chancellor V. J. Strickler of the Seventh Chancery. He was appointed and character of the Negro enterprise.
WHY IS IT?
The reason given for the effort to disbar Attorney Howard, S. D. Bale, is that he indicted defendants secured against them for trafficking the patronage. W. Bale, the former lawyer of the section and for many years the law partner of Attorney Howard, S. D. Bale, is indicted.
"A man wakes up in the morning, after sleeping under an advertised blanket on an advertised mattress, and pulls off advertised pajamas; takes a bath in an advertised tub; shaves with an advertised razor; washes with advertised soap; powders his face with advertised powder; dons advertised underwear, hose, shirt, collar, shoes, suit, handkerchief; sits down to a breakfast of advertised cereal; drinks a cup of advertised coffee; puts on an advertised hat; lights an advertised cigar; rides to his office in an advertised auto on advertised tires; deposits money in advertised institutions; then he refuses to advertise on the grounds that advertising does not pay."
The action on the part of the bar association follows closely in the wake of the verdict against the indictments and is looked upon as an effort on the part of the whites that negroes the Negro attorneys and further Perry W. Howard in political affairs of the Republican party in the state of Arkansas. In a statement made public last week in Washington, Attorney Howey mentions that he convinced and described himself as a martyr to Negro leadership. Attorney Redmond and Moon have been charged with having taken a leading part in Republican politics in this section, and have takenponsible for the anti-lynching plank encroached in the G. O. P. platform of atmosphere and have no color prejudice.")
ADVERTISE!
9. Some time ago letters were sent to the North to ask for documentation by federal emplog on the part of Means. Sleeps and Crager, white commitment of Virginia and North Carolina, take time to make a take in those cases? (Answer: "I know nothing about that.") Justice can initiate so much activity on behalf of a patronage matter, why is not act taken on the violation of the patronage statute? (Answer: "That steps do you think the party ought to take to explain your role to the Negro voters of the North who are under the impression that you are not to drive the Negro out of leadership and active party participation in the North as always to do my duty solely as I see it, to enforce the criminal law as we have clear evidence of their wrongdoing, whether defendants are white or colored and without references to any other

1. Paul and Barnabas Preaching at ionium (v. 1-4).
2. This is suggested by v. preaching (v. 1).
3. This is suggested by the little word "so" in verse 1. They so speak that a great multitude believed they were the greatest concession of sin and indulges declines for Christ can be truly said to be preaching in the Biblical sense. Their attitude towards oppression. This is suggested by the word "therefore". "Long time therefore they tarred." The opposition did not imply that they were the greatest concession to continue preaching. Christian workers should learn not to give up work because of opposition. They continued their preaching with mirth (v. 3). Since the opposition was so fierce, the Lord granted help which was needed. The effect of their preaching (v. 4).
5. The attitude of the city was divided. Where men nativitally preach the city, where concession comes frequently in the home just as Christ predicted.
6. Paul and Barnabas assumed
The Jews and the Gentiles united in planning this assault. Being applied of this plot, Paul and Barnabas wrote to them, where they proclaimed the gospel.
1. An Attendance to Worship Paul and Barbasae as Gods (v. 8-18).
2. The mission of God's gracious power shown in heating this lame man occasioned a new cripple. He had never walked. On hearing Paul preach faith in his heart (10.11). When he heard the lame man preach Christ, with a loud voice that could hear he bade the man to stand on his knees. He then leaped on he leaped on and walked (v. 10).
2. The method (v. 11-13).
They called Barbasae Jupiter, and offered him as chief speaker. The priest of Jupiter brought oxen and garlands ready to offer sacrifice to those men (v. 13, 14-18).
The couch act was happily averaged by the tact of the apostles as exhibited in the address of the occasion. They decided that they were divine beings and declared against the worship of men of like passions with themselves. What awful folly to use Barbasae God, who created all things and is above, spreading his Bench cent hands in blessing upon all, is
Fly to Him
If it be true that God is not only willing to befed us, but is spoken of as touched with sympathy for our miseries, as to be so kind to us, the more we are miserable, what folly were it not to fly to him without delay—John Calvin.
