After thirteen years of the sentence had been served, the white woman repudiated her charges and Bess was given his freedom. Sympathy for him was statewide and funds were raised to place him on his feet again. At the same time a move was made to indict the white woman for perjury. When she learned of this, she took back her statement holding Besshlman guilty. She was told that she could not say that he was without guilt. So Bess was placed back in jail while an effort has been made to prove him innocent. JACKSON, M.D. (For The Associated Negro Press) “Romance is the poetry of literature,” says Madame Necker. Many people believe that romance is to journey far and wide in search of romance. The thinker, especially the physician, knows that it is unnecessary to journey far and wide in search of romance. The deadly monotony of the factory is a fiction—its romance is real. The factory is written by writers, social service and otherwise, a well-known European artist, and painters in scenes in and about American chemical plant. His trained touch and delicate brush revealed the mind of the industrialist, strictly utilitarian buildings and equipment. Great industrial works are monolithic the mind is made to direct them and direct their operation. To them romance and artistry lurk in every corner. So perfectly have all the places that—each machine, with its electric motor an integral part, seems to place—each machine, with its possessive innate life. In four states alone, electricity was extended to 21,217 additional farms during 1927. AMERICA'S GREATEST WEEKLY NEWSPAPER FIVE years ago the possibility of extending electrical service to any considerable number of farms was problematical. Yet within three years the number of electrified farms in 27 states has nearly doubled. Two hundred ways in which electricity can make farming pay greater dividends in living comfort and dollar-producing efficiency have been developed. Ruled by the hard-won facts of engineering science, not by theories or dreams, the electric light and power industry is today making one of the few real contributions to the solution of the farmer's problem. A national rural electric project near Washington is now undertaking the study of new electric labor-saving devices and the electrical treatment of the soil and of crops to increase the productivity of farms. Facts are the foundation on which the electric light and power companies of America have built the structure of a public service unequalled in all the rest of the world. Detroit, Mich.—(ANP)—Speaking to the huge audience gathered at the mazing meeting of the Wolwerine Lodge No. 72, of the I. P. B, O. K, of W., have recently, Governor Fred Green paid tribute to the progress which Negroes have made in America and urged them to support Negro men and women for legislative purposes. The group greatly helped by having representatives of the colored group in the house and senate." WHY IS IT? The text of the Governor's address was as follows: "A man wakes up in the morning, after sleeping under an advertised blanket on an advertised mattress, and pulls off advertised pajamas; takes a bath in an advertised tub; shaves with an advertised razor; washes with advertised soap; powders his face with advertised powder; dons advertised underwear, hose, shirt, collar, shoes, suit, handkerchief; sits down to a breakfast of advertised cereal; drinks a cup of advertised coffee; puts on an advertised hat; lights an advertised cigar; rides to his office in an advertised auto on advertised tires; deposits money in advertised institutions; then he refuses to advertise on the grounds that advertising does not pay." "I hope what I have to say here this evening will be accepted not in words but in words of encouragement. It comes from one who is interested in you as a group. You need encouragement before you can stand up and handle handsicaps. There is not a group in our country who has had to overcome the obstacles you as a race winner had to overcome in sixty years. No man or woman in your group needs to appologize for the achievements which your race won in the last fifty or sixty years. "If you have a common purpose, you will listen to your wants and requests with respect. Men who occupy political offices will listen to your wants and requests, and will know that your ballot will be counted for or against them on the election day. A long, early night that you have seen the wisdom of selecting men of your group for public offices will go to the office of working for them so that after the election is over they may take their jobs in Lansing. Michigan will be greatly helped by having representatives the colored group in the house and senate." THE PRINTING MACHINE "Your group has certain problems which are peculiar to your group, such as the lack of motivation and aspirations of your group, and no man or woman is able to voice them better than a man or woman. You know the problems from the inside. "I have watched and have taken an interest in your group because in it you have learned to know that greater progress can be achieved, and from now on the load is going to be easier than the pinners have realized. I hope you take this opportunity to learn as a matter of flattery, but as sincerity and encouragement, which come from one who is interested in your group, you have greater and greater progress." COAST DEMOCRAT PREDICTS HEAVY VOTE FOR SMITH COAST DEMOCRAT PREDICTS HEAVY VOTE FOR SMITH Los Angeles, Cal.—(ANP)—With the November election rapidly nearing, much conjecture is being made as to what will be the strength of the Negro vote in California on the Democratic side. Titus Alexander, a former 76th District, an important official of the city libt and power office, and one of Los Aneles' most representative citizens, was approached as the most logical man to be able to give an opinion on the matter. Himself an ardent Democrat and Smith man, he said he would the Negro make himself felt in California, but that the Negro vote would elect Smith president. Concerning the Negro's present change of heart, he said: "The Negro may have owed a debt of gratitude to the Republican party, and I would paid that debt with interest in sixty-odd years of faithful allegiance." Federal England, that grand old man, declares, "The Negro will vote the Republican ticket until some great material constitutional crisis arises which will affect his constitutional rights. That time is here—the nominee for president, Governor Aldr E. Smith, is not tainted with the brand of the K. K. K, which is seared into the Republican party. "I predict that the Negro vote will elect Governor Smith president of the United States. The reign of lawlessness is seared into the stake, and mob law will cease; laws will be enforced. Sheets and man will be a drug on the market." THE HOUSTON INFORMER. SATURDAY. Paul and Silas prayed and sang in the jail, and they should pray under such circumstances, but to sing hymns as to tolling to all who have not come before God through Christ. Even with backs tethered and smarting, and fast feet in the stocks compelling the most pain in their lives, they did not of the inner prison with extreme certainty before them, their hearts went up to God in gratitude. 3. Their deliverance (v. 20). 4. Their deliverance by sending a great earthquake, which opened the prison doors and loomed their bands. 5. Conversion of the Jailer (v. 73, 74). The jailer had small sympathy for the prisoners, for as soon as they were made secure, he went to sleep. Being an earthquake he was about to kill himself, whereupon Paul assured him that the prisoners were all safe. Who knew the earthquake he now experienced caused him to come as a dumble inquirer after salvation. He was convicted of sin and was clearly pleased to clearly polished the way to be saved, saying, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ." The word "believe" means to trust and fully obey. The proof that the jailer was saved is threefold: 1. Transformation from brutality to charity (v. 38). 2. He who lied while ago could with impunity on the cruel lashers is now disposed to wash their wounds. 3. Confession of Christ in baptism (v. 2). Those who have really been convicted of sin and have experienced the saving grace of God delight to confess their faith in Him under all circumstances. 3. He set mean to见 them (v. 34). 4. His whole household baptized (v. 33). 5. A man's family is willing to follow him, you may be sure that his conversion is genuine. III. The Magistrates Humbled (v. 34, 30). They were to release the prisoners (vv. 35, 30). The earthquake brought four upon the magistrates and moved them to give leave for the prisoners to go home (vv. 35, 30). The ground of his refusal was that their rights as Roman citizens had been violated. They demanded public action. Brought out of prison by the officers (vv. 38, 39). Because they were Roman citizens they were released, the magistrates were sent home (vv. 38, 39). Returned to the house of Lydia (vv. 40). Upon their public citation they left prison and entered the house of Lydia, and after ministering confect to the brethren, they departed. **God Will Aid** It is my habitual practice about little things to bring them before God. To years later the First African Baptist Church was organized at Savannah, Ga. In 1805, the Joy St. Baptist Church, the first in New England, was organized in Boston; and in the succeeding year came the Abyssinian Church in New York City, and the First African Baptist Church in Philadelphia. About 1840 the First African Baptist Church in Washington became a distinctive race organization. The success of these societies, as distinctive Negro Baptist churches whose members, officers and pastors wore of the race, gave inspiration and confidence to many others and has been multiplied in all sections of the country. The lack of a general ecclesiastical organization makes it extremely difficult to gather with accurate accuracy the statistics of Baptist churches. It is time that their quarterly, annual or otherwise, are state and sectional lines, but their gatherings or conventions, whether quarterly, annual or otherwise, are not authoritative or compulsory. The migration of the Negro from the South, northward, which was revered for 1920, is still more striking for its increase in membership, and the increase in this denomination's churches and membership in the states, from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Virginia, to Florida on the west, and a comparison of this growth with the losses in Kentucky, Arkansas and other Southern states. In 1916, the three New England states reported five churches with 100,000 members. 1926, the number had grown to 59 churches with 12,535 members, a growth of 54 churches and 11,000 members. In 1916, Mississippi and Arkansas reported 3,999 churches, with 461,893 members; and in 1926, 3,689 churches, and 501,244 members in the decade. C. Hueston, chairman of the executive committee of the league and presiding officer of the Negro baseball League, is a consideration of the loyalty of those Negroes who have assumed to act for the race at political conventions and have seemingly acquiesced in decisions adverse to the rights of the Negroes. Another object is to work for the full enfranchisement of the American people, and to stand for the standing of the Negro in the Republican party. Said Jungue nuxon: "We indefeated to scourge those personages betraying the Negro in the United States." It appears that for a number of years the Republican party has not been an avid supporter of the Negro's rights before the laws as at the birth of the party. It is in the hands of the Negro that the thing possible to ascertain where the Republican party stands on the full enfranchisement of the Negro in the removal of all humiliating laws against the Negro race and the full education of the Negro everywhere." ANY MAN WHO IS GOOD ENOUGH TO SHED HIS BLOOD FOR his COUNTRY, IS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE GIVEN A SQUARE HEAT, IS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE MORE AND MORE IN A MAN SHOULD RECEIVE LESS—BOREVEYEL HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 1928 ALFRED SMITH AND "SOCIAL EQUALITY" It is both amusing and disgusting to observe the antics and mouthings of Southern Democratic leaders and organs, that are supporting the candidacy of Governor Alfred E. Smith for president of the United States, injecting the eternal and perennial "race issue" into the presidential campaign and their base appeals to racial prejudice, class distinction and group antipathy to keep intact their partisan forces in Dixieland. Unmindful of Governor Smith's well-known attitude on the vexing and perplexing "race question;" and, apparently, not cognizant of the fact that such appeals to racial hatred will injure the cause of their presidential candidate in the important border and pivotal states of the country, the Dixie Democrats are once more giving a concrete demonstration of their partisan solidity and political stupidity. Because Governor Smith has always been friendly to the colored race, and has always been rather liberal in his views concerning the rights of colored Americans (having repeatedly sought and enjoyed their votes in his campaigns for office in the Empire State), it is to be deplored that Southern leaders of the donkey party must live up to the emoji or their partisan organization and raise a smoke-screen behind which to becloud the real issue. During one of his campaigns for public office in New York, it is stated that Governor Smith advocated such pro-Negro doctrines that the late Theodore Roosevelt offered the present Democratic nominee a wager that he (Smith) would not invade the South and make such speeches in praise of the Negro and in addition to exercise and enjoy all constitutional prerogatives and warranties. These Dixie Democrats and their subsidized sheets continue to dwell upon the order of Secretary of Commerce Hoover, which abolished racial segregation in his department at Washington, D. C.; adding that if Mr. Hoover should be elected president of the republic, white women and girls will be compelled to work beside Negro men in the various governmental departments at the national government. We wonder if these Southern Democratic leaders and editors know how many Negro Democrats are holding fat jobs in New York City and state by the grace and gesture of Tamaryn Hall, Smith's political progenitor? Do these Dixie Democrats know whether these Negro officers are segregated in the various municipal and state departments, or whether they work beside "white women and girls?" Has Governor Smith ever voiced his objection to Negro holding such public offices in New York, and has he ever recommended any legislative measure to separate the two races in such public offices? Has the Southern presidential candidate, as chief executive of New York, ever advocated jim-crow accommodations for Negroes, and has he preached or embraced the Southern doctrine of the Negro "staying in his place?" Does the record disclose where Governor Smith has ever contended for separate schools for the colored and white races in his native state, or that he has ever raised his official voice against intermarriage of the two races, "social equality" or misrepresentation? Has the Empire State governor ever been a party to any movement which seeks to nullify, ignore and override the thirteenth, The Informer is of the opinion that the Dixie Democrats and newspapers that are trying to inject the "race question" into this presidential campaign, are playing with fire and are engaging in a political game which bids fair to seal the doom of their party, from a national standpoint; for, whether these smart and astute Dixie Democrats and editors are wise to the fact or not, the Negro constitutes the balance of power in several states which Nominee Smith must carry. The is to be victorious in his presidential campaign. Comparing the public records of Governor Smith and Mr. Hoover, particularly as they relate to their attitude on the "race question," it hardly seems fair and reasonable for the Democratic pot to call the Republican kettle ebony-hued! Selah! ORGANIZING NEGRO VOTERS IN TEXAS Living up to its well-established reputation as being one of the most efficient and best functioning organizations extant, the Republican national committee, through its titular heads, has perfected a nationwide movement among the Negro group, giving representation to practically every section of the country. Differing from the procedure of former years, the chairman of the colored division is not a resident of the South, which seems to indicate that the G. O. P. leaders are planning to make a concerted drive for Negro votes in the debatable and pivotal states of the republic; these partisan leaders, apparently, having been converted to the idea that Northern Negroes do not take so kindly to the idea of making possible Republican victories, while the direction of such national campaigns is vested in party leaders from other sections of the country. Since it is apparent that the national organization plans to concentrate its efforts in doubtful and debatable states, despite the assurances from some of the Southern Republican leaders that their states will swing into the Hoover column in November, it behooves the Republican leaders of the Southern states to organize their forces to poll a large vote for Nominee Herbert Hoover. Texas is going to be a real battle-ground in the 1928 presidential race, and it is up to the Republican party leaders in this state to get busy at once and so line up their forces as to contest every inch of ground with the Democratic national ticket. To this end, the colored voters of Texas should be organized and their full voting strength made available for Mr. Hoover, particularly if the party leaders in this state are sincere in their professed desire to see a record-breaking vote registered for the Hoover-Curtis presidential electors on November 6, 1928. It is estimated that there are fully 125,000 to 150,000 qualified colored voters in Texas, but these voters, in the main, have lost interest in partisan affairs because no efforts have been made in recent years to keep them interested in the party in this state. It is common knowledge that the Democratic national leaders plan a nationwide drive for colored voters, and national headquarters has already been opened in New York City; and it is confidently expected that a campaign will be waged among the colored electors of the Lone Star State for the Smith-Robinson ticket to offset the anti-Smith Democrats who will support and vote for Mr. Hoover. Whether the Republican leaders of Texas organize the Negro citizens or not, these colored voters should not become apathetic and lethargic and thus permit to go by default an excellent opportunity to organize their own forces and make their voting power felt in the general election. A statewide Hoover-for-president organization should be launched among Texas Negroes, and an intensive campaign conducted there will be able to poll the full voting strength of the race for the Republican presidential standard-bearer. It is impossible to get votes for any candidate or cause without organization, and, since the national Republican leaders have recognized the importance of permitting Negroes to conduct their own campaign for the national ticket, the Republican leaders of Texas, if they want the 100,000 odd Negro votes, should not fall under their control. Already consternation has entered the ranks of the Smith Democrats in this state, and they are busy organizing their forces and raising campaign funds with which to prosecute a vigorous drive, in this erstwhile rock-ribbed Democratic state, for the Smith-Robinson presidential electors. This act on the part of Texas Smith-Democrats, in itself, is an admission that they fear the defection from their ranks of the Democratic party. The party leaders in this state towards alleged "bolters," all indicate that Texas is a fertile political field in the forthcoming presidential sweepstakes; and the Republican leaders have the finest chance in the history of the state to either carry it for Hoover, or frighten the Democrats almost to death by giving them a "close shave" in the presidential race. In a close race, 100,000 or more votes will be the determining factor in the history of the state to either carry it for Hoover, or frighten the Democrats almost to death by giving them a "close shave" in the presidential race. If the Republican leaders of Texas do not lend their assistance and encouragement to the proper organization of the colored voters of this state, and then the Smith forces take advantage of the dumbness and sinuity of the Texas Republican leaders, the former can blame only themselves if the colored electors, in large numbers, cast their ballots for Governor Alfred E. Smith, or the Republican candidate among Negroes of the nation that the Democrats have ever nominated for this lofty elective position. OPINIONS BEHOLD THE LILY-WHITES! BEHOLD THE LILY-WHITES! Our Negro national politicians have contented themselves in the main as well as the secondary officers and distributors. This process might continue for another hundred years and the Negro community has been stationary or regressive. The Negro chief complaint against the Negro community is the fact that it lacks the courage to state the South as a blameless Negro community as Roosevelt did and in 1918. But it is attempting to accommodate the Negro community, trickery, trickery and low cunning. David Bermis be supplanted, Walter C. Crawford be crucified and Bob Church threatened on the spurious ground of corruption and venality. Thus the race is tainted by the Negro community which will brand it to overestimate it in all parts of the country and But, Lee, its er long dane lat daint got no turn.
