East Texas, you know, is the fruit-growing section of the Lone Star State, and most of the residents of that state often "work up" hundreds of jars of peach, pear and fig preserves, apple jelly, citrus, kiwi and sweet tooth, and they certainly know and sturth their staff in preserving these various fruits and making drinks for the good people. During our recent visit to Marshall, Mrs. Warren Porter and O. L. K. Warren Porter and our sweet tooth, presented us with several jars of preserves and jelly. In a large container full of peach and fig preserves and apple jelly, a very appreciative gift from these kind-hearted folks. Fulfilling a promise made several weeks ago, Prof. C. H. Chicago, Ill.—(ANP)—After forty-five years as an active knight among the Pythia, Supreme Chancellor S. W. Green led in a ceremony here Tuesday, dedicating the million dollar national Pythia temple which, as he described it, represented the consummation of a quarter of a century of sacrificial effort. This ceremony in the heart of Chicago's expansive Negro neighborhood was impressive, not only because of the magnitude of the task which it symbolized, but because it represented the materialisation of a vision. The final display of five years of effort which had for its purpose the building of a monument that would be an inspiration to the Negro race. Since that grand goal was set, the dredges of men and women who served in the Pythia service, had passed away, but this great temple is still and magnificent attestation of the fact that the good that men do lives after them. While explaining the purpose of the temple, the supreme chancellor, in an address that was rich in its idealistic to the city of its home and to express the hope that the Negro of the future would derive the pride and adulation of the temple with pride and adulation in the world to do noble and better things. Many Leaders Are Gave "Only a few of the original numbers who planned the temple can be the pride of the nation when the supreme chancellor observed solemnly; but the seeds of higher ambition and desire down in the hearts of the faithful and efficient leaders by the faithful and efficient builders of that day and time have now been a beautiful building that we behold today." "Through trials and tribulations, through darkness and despair, over rough and stony paths we have come until now we stand in the bright sunlight of success to enjoy the fruits of our labor." The Pythian supreme chancellor then traced the history of that labor from the first mention of a grand national temple made at the 1905 convention by the late supreme chancellor, Samuel W. Starks, and the appointment of the first commission, on through the years. Starks died in 1908 and Green was left to carry on the work. Chicago's Superior Advantages Chicago was selected in 1906 as the city of the temple and that almost ancient choice moved Green to comment in his dedicatory address that "with almost prophetic vision and with rare human foresight, the commission selected the most progressive and the most prosperous city of the West, if not of all America." Fitting and proper, he deemed it, that the commission should have chosen as the home of the temple, a city whose first settler was a colored man, Jean Baptiste Point deSalle. "The commission not only selected the most progressive city of the West," he continued, "but it selected a city composed of the most prosperous, the most progressive, and the most aggressive members of the colored race in all of the Americas." "Here in Chicago, despite the humiliation of race and color, despite the hardships of poverty, we find members of the cultural race going forward by loops and bounds, by acquiring cultures, by acquiring cultures, by filling positions of honor and responsibility in our city and among such people that we have chosen to create this great city, to build a city of building owned and controlled by the Knights of Frytinas in the world." ESK EDUCATOR LEAVES ESTATE TO ALMA MATER Nashville, Tenn. — (ANP) — A career of service, which extended over more than two score years, came to an end here Wednesday when he n. Professor Burus of Fisk University passed away. Funeral services were held in the university chapel, Friday afternoon, where the body had lain in state for more than a year. The tentatives of other institutions and a host of friends gathered at the funeral bier to pay their last respects to the late Burus. He began his career at Fisk University in 1981, the first class to graduate from the college department. He continued his career with Burus, who offered the degree of master of arts. A few years later he returned to Fisk University, where he first Negro to be appointed on the university faculty. In the years of service he won distinction as a teacher bore the reputation of being efficient and sympathetic. He had the respect of the student body. It is legendary that Burus assisted many deserving students financially thus enabling them Leaves Estate to University While serving others, Prof. Burrus also wrought well for himself amassing quite a deal of money and property. As he gave his life to Fisk University, so he did with his estate, leaving everything to the university to be used in erecting Burrus Memorial Hall and increasing the endowment fund. His worth as a teacher, a businessman, and a humanitarian was cited at the funeral services by President Jones and other members of the faculty. The obituary showed that he was a member of a family of educators, who, too, had given their lives in the cause of promoting education among Neuroes. Dr. Johnson educated the educational needs of the state. R Bus Competition Strong In South Africa Districts Johannesburg, So. Africa.—(ANP) The competitive factor in transport which the development of road motor vehicles has created in South Africa in recent years is reported causing increasing concern to that country, according to a report relating to the department of commerce. In certain suburban areas there appears to be an increasing tendency for passengers to transfer their patronage to the railway in competition with the railway. This has attained some serious proportions in Johannesburg, the Walmer Branch, that the railroad has been discontinued. Assistant Trade Commissioner William L. Kloein of Johannesburg, report to the department. Some adequate measure of control over road motor services that compete with the railway has been called to be imperative, up to the present time no definite stage have been taken in this direction. A unanimous opinion of the kind, however, is being strongly urged, not only by the railway administration, but also by the commercial bodies, and it is believed likely that some action in this regard will be taken by parliament in the near future. In order to meet the competition of precisely built bus routes, the railway company has to push the bus system and pand its motor transport service. The open mileage operated by the railway company is 2.12 km. Rush and all because the judge refused to impose the sentence upon him as suggested by the verdict of the jury which found Corey guilty of stealing four hams and decreed that he serve from one year to life in the penitentiary. Those hams have caused Corey much trouble. When he stole them from Swift and Company, April 7, he was shot and seriously wounded by the night watehman. Since that time he has been in jail awaiting trial. He pleaded guilty to the charge and the jury brought in the verdict which caused much consternation in Corey's mind. He looked pleadingly at Judge Rush and the judge set aside the verdict and sentenced him to one year in the house of correction. "The prison sentence of from one year to life," said the judge, "is too severe for the offense. Under the jury verdict he might have spent 11 years in the penitentiary." This controversy which has been carried on ever since the famous "sweet trial," has resulted in the death of a black woman hoodlums every time a colored family moved into a "white neighborhood." Mrs. Inabelle Johnson that she could not purchase on the Six Mile Red Road but could not live in it. Rev. Bradley and plans of battle were formulated. A committee consisting of Attorney H. W. They decided that a transcript of the case could be decided before it could be decided whether or not the case should be taken to the court. The case was then made against theigan. The fact was made known by Lawyer McKinney that on two presidents the case had been made against Negroes by the state supreme court. He further concluded that too many adverse decisions had been made against people. The transcript has been obtained, if it is deemed advisable to carry the case to the supreme court of the United States in an effort to break down the Michigan law. At the mans meeting subscriptions to the amount of $165.00 were pledged to the court, and the dollar amounts of which was paid to the clerk of the court to begin the transaction of the Johnson case. Bethel, Ebensner and St. Stephen, three A. J. Williams, raise $60 each with to pay the balance on the transcript. Thus far the attorneys in the case has been grazed. Denied Hospital Entrance Gotham Woman Succumbs New York, N. Y.—(ANP)—Having been denied admission to the new Medical Center on Washington Hill, she received the Freebysterian Hospital unit of this medical center, Mrs. J. W. Brown, M.D., and the new Medical Zion Church of this city, died at the Roosevelt Hospital at 8:45 p. m., Sunday. IISR.—(ANP)—Charles Morris was disbarred Oct. 17, has been found guilty of embazing $631.04 and an administrator to two soldiers of the World War. Stock taking usually follows the upsetting of previously existing condition of things. The recent political upheaval will cause a realignment of political forces in this country. There are political principles in the two parties. The platform of Kansas City and Houston read like the same document exchanged in different terms of phraseology. The principles are also different and a partisan as the Secretary Hughes could find no essential difference in his view, resolved into a question of personality and prosperity in a traditional doctrine of free trade; the Republican effectively disavowes their ancient party creed to enforce a new constitution, and vowed to guarantee the Negro his political position in adversary in着信 their belief in states rights, but both balked at applying it to the issue of problematization of the election has wiped out the political meaning of North and South. The loss of power in one section will, in some slight measure, be compensated by the local gains in the other. Increasing numbers of Negros will be put to chancels and state legislators in the next decade we may confidently expect half dozen Negro congressmen from the large cities where the race constitutes the majority in congressional units. One such member has already been elected and several more are bound to follow, within the next few years. This will give the race the representation inside the circle of the government. Several Negro congressmen exercising good sense and same judgment can contribute effectively to the political good of the race. The elimination of the Negro from a controlling say in Southern state organizations puts him effectively out of the game in national politics, for many years to come. Northern representatives can only speak for limited local political areas which at best can have but slight bearing upon the state organizations of which they form a minor part. Without a constituency with ascertainable control of effective voters, no one may expect any effective away or say with the powers that be or desire to be. It is only when you have the power and the disposition to change the government that your voice will be heard and heded. In the science the race will have to rely chiefly on public protest against injustice and inequality to secure the vote. But the court has ruled law. Dall as the conscience of the nation has become the voice of justice, and such plans go wholly unhounded. WHY DO NEGROES NOT DO BETTER IN BUSINESS There has been a lot of wonder from time to time about why Negroes place in the general scheme of American business, and many doleful efforts have been made to advance their status after more advanced for more of the nation's business turning to profit to other peoples than to colonize. The answer is simple, according to discoveries recently made by one seeker of the business, who are growing are doing a proportion of the general business of the country and the business of the nation in their training, ability, and courage to embark in business upon the prevailing terms of the line in which they work. In Providence, Rhode Island, a jewel decorating concern where a Negro employs in artistry upon gold and silver compacts, meshbags, cigarette lighters, etc., we find that more than a hundred of the businessmen and artisans themselves of the product of the house of J. G. Lewis, Jr. Company, chain stores has just placed an order with the Overton Hygiene Company to offer themselves to be offered over the counters of several thousand stores scattered about the country during the next month. The Maryland Garage and Auto service station of Boston, owned by John Michaud, meets the increased demand of a business that already includes the upkeep than 360 commercial auto-mobiles. Down in Arkansas, John Claybrooks worked on a project that dollars worth of hardwood and farm products each month, and everyone worked so much wood that sort one month of the year. Neither we buy bailed cotton since we have few factories to out in Kansas, a Negro who not only does a nice job, but the Charles of Commerce, quarries and sells many carriages of basic wood annually. In the field of merchandising, one often finds a colored man in responsible organization. For instance, we have John Michaud, city editor of the New York Times, there is Henry Smith, superintendent of the Ohio state body, one of the leaders of auto bodies in the country. When you arrive one of the every- where heroes of her life, you know her horseface known that the head of that match is composed largely of ironically ignited chemicals. It is an opportunity such as exists now to be held in United States on the opportunity for training of our men and women in the exacting technique of banking—a nucleus from which will eventually go forth pioneers in other communities to establish banks which will not have to struggle under the “breaking hardicaps of our present firms” and thus to other States. Other of our race—who has been for more than a dozen years, president of a substantial Negro bank in one of our Southern states, with a capital of more than $20,000, offered to resign his most and its enrolments in order to leave the United States and learn banking from the ground up. Now that the government agency is cooperating with the National Negro Business League, the Associated Negro Press, and a score of other race trade organization, and a more accurate picturization of the Negro business and the presented� of bias and prejudice, we are likely to be very often treated to revelations that are of the most encouraging character. The Department of Commerce is primarily concerned with serving all business and of itself does not take significance of any groupings as to race; it is an organization of the department is a Negro in administrative position who has the instinctive interest and pride in race achievement that prompts him to want to seek out and make public such information when comes to his notice. This, however, is not his elementary service. His main object is to make available the government helps to business to those who have not realized how much help the government tenders. Whether you are doing business within your group, with the general public, there is some helps that are yours for the asking. Perhaps the answer to some one vexing problem may set you on the way to becoming one of those high lights of commerce such as has been mentioned in this story. Before leaving them he knelt down and prayed with them. 11. Concerning Certain Ones at Rome (Rom. 16:1-1). 1. Phoebe commended to the Christians at Rome. Phoebe was a Christian woman from the church at Cenchea who was making a visit to Rome. Her business is not defined, but it was such that he could ask the Christians not only to receive her, but to render to her the proper assistance therein. 2. He asks that the Christians greet Priscilla and Aquilla (vv. 3, 4). The ground upon which this greeting was urged was their own loyalty to himself. 11. Concerning Apaphroditus (Phil. 2:25-30). Not being able to revisit the church at Phillipp, Paul sent his friend Apaphroditus to minister to them. Philemon was a member of the church at Colosse. Onesimus, his slave, wronged him; perhaps stole from him and fled to Rome and there came under Paul's influence and was converted. Paul sent Onesimus back to Philemon with this letter. This is one of the most tender and beautiful letters ever written and the first anti-slavery petition ever penned. 1. The salutation (vv. 1-3). His aim was to touch Philemon's heart; be, therefore, refers to himself as a prisoner and links Philemon to himself as a fellow-laborer in the gospel of truth. 2. Philemon's reputation (vv. 4-7). (I) His faith and love toward the Lord and all the saints (v. 5). His earnest desire was that this faith bear fruit in Christ Jesus. (2) His ministry to the saints (v. 7). Phillem generosity minister of his substance to the poor saints. 3. Paul's request (vv. 8-16). He requested Phillem to receive back Onesinus, the runaway slave, as a brother in Christ. What wrongs we have committed, debts incurred—all our shortcomings, debts incurred—the whole universe, said to God, "Put that to my account." However, as soon as the national election was over and these same Negroes and their followers attempted to vote in the local Democratic primary elections in two southern states, one while Arkansas bowed to a courtship which ruled that Negroes could not be kept out of such primary elections, while the other (Texas), as "Howney (1) Houston," relegated their black voters to political objection and insurrection, and held a "white more primary" to select a minority of commissioners and a white controller. In other words, even though forced by a district court to do so, the Arkansas (Little Rock) Democrats did show more consideration than was true of the Texas Democrats in this city towards their ebony-hued supporters. Houston and Texas Negroes were all right while they supported and voted for Governor Smith and Senator Robinson, who led the Democratic party to almost political annihilation; but as soon the election was over and the rout and debacle had been completed, the black voter unfit to cast a ballot intelligently in the recent municipal primary. Thus the stupidity, sinniness, prejudice and shortsightness of the Democrat party are still in evidence in this part of the political viewpoint; and while Mexicans, white Republicans, Hoover Democrats and foreigners of all extractions were qualified and educated, the Democraticocratic primary election, the black man was person non grata. Well, folks, pay your poll tax now and let's get ready for the municipal general election next April. Let's quality now as voters and act later. MORE ABOUT FAIR FOOTBALL GAME The Informer has received much encouragement in its recent editorial contention that the annual football game at the Dallas State Fair, on "Negro Day," should be played between colored colleges of Texas. One Wiley College alumnus, in commending our position, stated that he would never attend another game at Dallas on this day mail. The Informer's contention has won out. The Industrial College hold to the view that the Panthers would be a far better drawing card with the Wiley Wildcats than the Langston, Oklahoma, Texas; arguing that with Prairie View as Wiley's grid foil, a special train could be operated out of South Texas, and that thousands of colored Texasans would take more interest in the fray and thus swell the gate receipts. There can be no denying the fact that the colored colleges of Texas need all the military and finances which accrue as a result of this matter, in demanding the booking of two Texas college elevens for "Negro Day" at the fair, is selfishness, then make the most of it. Another thing: Colored Texasans are tired of going to Dallas every year and seeing a state eleven fail to win a game from a foreign invader; rounding in the stock of the outside school he considerably boosted and the reputation and prestige of the Texas school catapulted in the wrong direction. Speaking from a culinary officer it is fried chicken and other such delicious cuisine; and likewise they tie up of the same football men. The Information is not attempting to dim Wiley's gridron lustre our cost the Marshall school as one of the contenders in this annual event; but we are contending that some strong Texas eleven should oppose Wiley in this encounter. In 1929 the Information places in nomination as Wiley's footwear department at the State Fair, the Prairie View Panthers, and we are bold enough to conture the assertion that the gate will will set a new mark for attendance; and the game will be told about our new mark and exciting to the spectators as we finally insure to play at the fair between Wiley and The Houston Informer EXPANSION PROGRAM FOR BISHOP At a meeting of the alumni association of Bishop College, Marshall, held in the dining room of Rockefeller Hall last week, President D. C. Gilmor unfolded tentative plans for a $1,000-000 campaign for this noted Texas institution of learning. Of this huge sum of money, which is expected to be realized by the celebration of the centennial anniversary of the American Baptist Home Mission Society of New York City in 1932, $500,000 will be utilized for endowment purposes and the other $500,000 employed for new buildings, equipment and additional campus ground. The alumni, former students and colored friends of Bishop are going to be called upon to raise about one-fifth of this amount, (between $175,000 and $200,000 of 1930 it is hoped to have all the forces organized for the drive. Launched in 1881 as an institution for higher education of Negroes, Bishop College has done a remarkable work in the realism realm, and today her products are not only reflecting much credit upon their alma mater, but they are rendering a signal service to their racial contingent and the social fabric. This school has meant and still means much to the educational life of the Negroes of Texas and contiguous states, while the imminent construction and beyond the geographical boundaries of the state and South. For the past twenty years the school has enjoyed little material expansion, although its classroom work has continued to maintain its traditional record for thoroughness and efficiency. As a result of its contributions to the race and society and the resultant prestige, Bishop College now finds itself cramped and unable to care for the hundreds of colored boys and girls seeking higher education within its historic and classic walls, and that the school must literally come to the crossroads in its development and activities. No institution can hope to hold its own by merely marking time, there must be progress and expansion or regreting and decline; and it would be a sad day, indeed, for Negro education in Texas and the South if such an educational institution should be forced to take a backward step because of lack of funds for its enlargement and expansion. When the full details of the campaign are outlined and made public, the students will come to this undertaking, both on the part of alumni, former students, and friends of Marshall school, will be whole-hearted and flattering, and that the objective will be attained within the allotted period of the drive. GOOD ROADS STIMULATE PROSPERITY During a recent overland trip to East Texas, we observed that where good roads exist the sections look prosperous and inviting, but where bad roads infest the country, the picture is rather gloomy and discouraging. Good roads are indispensable nowadays to prosperity, both rural and urban; for without them the farmers can not easily get their products to the market, nor can hay frequent the business marts of the cities. During the early days of the automobile, when a car was considered a luxury and enjoyed only the wealthy and well-off rural and urban populations, and opposed all bond issues which had for their objective better roads and paved highways. During the last decade this septiment has completely changed in most of the small towns and rural sections, for the farmers now own automobiles and trucks, and they have discovered that without good roads their machines are not much benefit to them. They realise further that good roads add many years to the life of an automobile, and that the car no longer is considered a luxury but a necessity; that it is an important and essential to the average farmer as his plow, tractor and other agricultural implements. All civilized and progressive peoples and nations, from the early days of Rome down to the present era, have stressed the construction and maintenance of good roads; and the Appian road, the main thoroughfare still exists, must testify to the Romans' conception of the importance and necessity of good roads. While Texas has not made progress and headway in the construction and maintenance of good roads and paved highways like some of the other Southern states of smaller area, judging from the roads and highways in course of construction in various sections of the state, within the next few years this state will have more paved piles connected all sections of the Lone Star State. In this connection, it appears to the Informer that the highway commission and county commissioners should force all road contracting firms who construct these highways, to provide all-season passable detours, as is done in many of the American states; for with many of these highways under construction, upon motorists and other users of automotive vehicles, but it divers much travel, trade and business from the cities in the affected areas. REPUBLICAN PRIMARY IN TEXAS According to a recent tabulation of the votes cast in this state for the Democratic and Republican gubernatorial candidates in the general election, the G. O. P. nominee received in excess of 116,000 votes, marking the second time since the passage of the Terrrell election law when a Republican candidate for governor of Texas has received more than 100,000 votes. Under the civil statutes of Texas, governing party primaries and elections, all political parties in the state which poll more than 100,000 votes for their gubernatorial candidate, must nominate all candidates for office by primary elections instead of party conventions at the next biennial election. In other words, the Republicans of Texas, under the law, must nominate a primary election just like the Democrat in 1930, thereby qualifying once more as a major political party in the state. With the state giving its twenty electoral votes to the Republican presidential ticket by some 25,000 majority, and with the gubernatorial candidate having received in excess of 116,000 votes, the Republican party in Texas can become a real competitor of the Democratic for president by building up and maintaining a strong and virile organization in the state, and attempt to corral votes for the party. Thousands of citizens who vote in the Democratic primaries in this state, due to the fact that the Republicans have not herefore made any earnest and sincere effort to build up a strong, competing party, can be convinced to move the party modern to get busy and get after votes both in and out of season. With a schism and division among the Democrats, which is showing no signs of healing just now, the Republican party can become a potent factor in the politics of Texas, if the party leaders will play the game as it should be played in this state. Here's hoping that other Southern white daily newspapers will adopt and pursue the liberal news policy of the Atlanta Constitution, and thereby add and assist in bringing about better relations between the two races by featuring news and carrying the likenesses of Negroes who are doing worthwhile and landable things in the various avenues of human endeavor. Texas has six state hospitals for mental cases with a combined capacity of more than 9,000 patients. The total property valuation of Texas' six state hospitals is $1,217,000. She was Chloe Maxwell, and hers was the beauty that women would have traded fortunes to possess—and it made her unhappy. She brushed her hair, watching the waves spring back into place as the soft bristles passed over them—and pondered. She had never known her parents. When only a girl of ten, Arthur Standish had procured her from an orphan asylum and installed her in his home. She had been very happy, for Arthur Standish was rich and more than this, he was white. He was uncommonly interested in her welfare, saw personally to her education and training and allowed her to want for nothing. Mrs. Standish, too, had taken an instant liking to her, and her fondness for sewing kept Chloe a large and varied wardrobe.
