GRAND SECRET LOCAL PARKING PROBLEMS OFF TO VARIOUS SCHOOLS COLLEGED WORLD'S SERIES One wry gesturing thing was done during the second event of this column from the city, when the grand brothers of Friendship and Sisters of Mysterious Ten met here and requested the grand brother of Mr. Gruber grand secretary of the order. While out of the city, this writer sent back an editorial to The Informer of Mysterious Ten, in which we urged that the official board of this fraternity and clarify the situation by giving Mr. McGruber a "dum bill of health." Brailing the official board of difference as to procedure in trying to audit the accounts and clarify the situation by giving Mr. McGruber was not short in the funds entrusted to his charge and hounding. The Informer of Mysterious Ten argued that the grand master, grand lodge or any person official connected with the account of the grand master, sounded belief that the matter would be settled in an amicable and brotherly manner. While our belief was justified fully by later developments, and while we were aware of the reality of the United Boards of Friendship and Sisters of Mysterious Ten, Mr. Gruber grand secretary and thereby absolving him from any shortage, it is our软弱 opinion that by order of this matter at the Beaconmont grand lodge, only was the charge that the grand secretary was short several thousand dollars calculated to injure his family, but such accession was likely to wreak much damage upon indecisive staff in decreasing the size of the company. However, since the matter has been settled and everything appears to be going well, the family of this Texas order, we hope that these relations will continue to work more constructively to make more manifestative work will be employed heathier in auditing the accounts of the grand gate officers. Like all growing cities, Houston has a strong connection with its metropolitan automotive and vehicular traffic, and it is next to impossible to pass and enter the city without a vehicle plume and satisfy everybody. In observing traffic regulations in the majority of large cities in Texas and Louisiana, Houston is about the only large city in the country which permits to assemble or secure parking space on the street as angle parking, automotive traffic is laid up considerably in traffic as lack out of parking space. Then, two, angle parking, with cars and give traffic much less law for speed, and jams and congestion is usually a result of automobile traffic. The old idea of parking on the main thoroughfare of the city was largely seen as a place to place them where they could be seen, and where they would be easy to reach in thousands of automobiles in the city such village methods of parking can be met. All cars, Houston should adopt parallel parking on all downtown streets in handling its automobile traffic. We have a municipal, metropolitan area about most everything else in the city, and we should remove "Homestyle Houston" out of the village category by abolishing it on Main Street. The various institutions of learning are opening and hundreds, yes thousands of our children are trekking their way to the several institutions of learning scattered throughout this country. Houston, with the largest colored population of any city in Texas and with its three colored senior high schools, one junior high school and one junior college, will be represented by a large number of pupils in many of the nation's best schools; which is as it should be. But, like the \(Bengal\)s ghost, the problem of finding something for these young people to do when they complete their educational training and enrolment upon the \(sous\) of human endeavour, is ever present and will not \(drown\), and we will be recrent to our hidden duty if we fail to provide avenues of employment for these brilliant and enthusiastic youth after their graduation from college. Yes, let's send our children to public schools, colleges and universities, but let's also prepare some places for them to fill and do service after they complete the prescribed courses of study at these various educational centers. ..... While many baseball experts contend that the Bufalers, the leaders of the Bufs are confident that the local club will make a fine showing against the invaders, the Bufalers are confident THE HOUSTON INFORMER BLACK BUFFS TO PLAY MONARCHS WORLD'S SERIES The Houston Black Buffaloes, who literally made a runaway race of the current season in the Texas-Oklahoma-Louisiana League, copping the pennant, will face an acid test here September 21, 22, 28, 29, 30 and October 1 2, when they clash with the Kansas City Monarchs, 1929 champions of the National Negro League, for the colored world's championship. The seven games will be played here at West End Park, beginning each week day at 3:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. News comes from Kansas City that the Monarchs are not underestimating the strength of the Black Buffaloes, and will invade the city expecting no diamond set-up. The big leagueers have a team of baseball stars, including Harding, shortstop; Allen, second base; Rogan, center field and pitcher; Livingston, left field; Taylor, right field; Joseph, third base; Duncan and Young, catchers; William Bell, L. and A. Cooper, Brewer and Wilson, pitchers. “Bullet” Rogan is manager of the Monarchs, who have in Duncan one of the highest catchers of the game, while New Joseph, former Galveston Black Sanderah, is the premier third sacker of the major loop. Quincy J. Gilmore, president of T.O.L. League and connected with the Monarchs for some 10 years, played a large part, along with President J. B. Grigsy of the Buffs, in arranging this titular series. Both times that she has sung here the members of her race and the local musical colony have felt that she made unusual contributions as a colored artist showing the capabilities of her vocal ability which any race might feel proud of. It has been in the sense of a singer comparable to the best that the world offers that the daily practice of her ability which is exercised to her. The musical critic of the Seattle University follows the way to "Sunday night's concert by the American Philharmonic orchestra was largely a repetition of the preceding two performances between Miss Marian Anderson and Henry Hadley, the conductor, and just as the second performance of Miss Anderson's fourth appearance as solist with the stadium orchestra, it actually received as before. If the midsummer concerts had done nothing different, she would have sent to the finest of living contralto singers and it was plainly a reason for her deep appreciation to her go after the second encore. The critic of the Seattle Daily Titanic "great artist," continued: "it was 'Marian Anderson night' at the University of Washington Stadium last summer, and deeply impressed her hearers at two of the earlier American Philharmonic concerts, turned to sing again, postponing her plans for a European trip. Last week she proved and appreciation. It gave her an ovation. If Miss Anderson was in the ocean passage she must have felt relief, in some measure at least, by her success." Members of her race in this city are proud and of have risen to the top of the women. Most difficult for them to overcome is the critical who finds Miss Anderson possessed of such a marvous voice that she is able to be ranked as the "best of the届" women. EX-SLAVE LEAVES $10,000 Madvillionie, Tenn. — (ANP) The will of Dave Serrugs, age 72, passed away at his home near here on Friday, the day before left an estate of $10,000. Among the bequests were one of $1000 for his wife, and another for Mr. Serrugs worshipped as a child during slavery and another to the Negro Baptist church of which he was a member. Kansas City, Norfolk Hosts To 2 Gatherings PICK WILLIAMS WOOD'S FACTION TO LEAD FORCES; PLANS TO RESCUE MUSIC FEATURE NEGRO COLLEGE Kansas City, Mo.—(ANP)—After listening to the reading of an exhaustive and comprehensive report of the president, Dr. L. K. Williams, delegates to the National Baptist Convention, Incorporated, meeting in this city, reelected him to the position which he has held since the death of the late Elias Camp Morris by the customary vote of acclamation. Dissension and revolt, which, according to reports before the convention, had been brewing in several states scarcely showed its head here, and the tall Chicago was the master this year that he has been on previous occasions. Eight thousand people were thrilled by the music of a chorus of 750 voices Tuesday night in the pre-convention concert. The chorus directed by Edward H. Boatner of Chicago, sang a program of spirituals and classics in Convention Hall in a manner that received the attention of Mr. Boatner, inasmuch as many of the singers could not read music. Accompanion for the singers was played on six concert grand pianos. A feature of the concert which proved a distinct surprise was the prompt beginning of the program. Persons arriving late, figuring on "colored people's time," rot to hear only one or two pumbers. Defying tradition in that he failed to send a letter or a proxy, Governor Henry S. Caulfield personally greeted the delegates when the convention opened Wednesday morning and assumed that the meeting was to be held at a state which was "not unfriendly" to the Negro. Governor Caulfield motored the 165 miles from the state capital especially to greet the Baptists. The state executive revealed that he was of the Baptist faith and recited some of the things which his administration has done and is doing to make the conditions better for the Negro citizens of the state. He told of the improvement in rural school conditions for Negro children, of changes in the law to give them more and better schools, of improvements at the state penitentiary and of non-discriminatory law enforcement programs. Prolonged applause greeted his statement that he was trying to be governor of all the people and was seeking, insofar as was in his power, to iron out inequities. Welcome addresses were given by Mayor Albert I. Beach of Kansas City, who told the convention that Kansas City regarded its Negro citizens as an asset and was proud of them; by Dr. J. Edward Perry, T. B. Watkins, Rev. S. A. Washington, The Rev. J. T. Goodall of Philadelphia responded. BAR ASSOCIATION ASKS CHURCHMEN FOR COOPERATION Chicago, Ill.—(ANP)—The National Bar Association sent its representatives before two of the larger church bodies of the country last week in an effort to enlist their cooperation in their fight against segregation, discrimination, and oppression of the Negro group. The program and plan for cooperation between the ministry and the law is shown by the letter directed by President Raymond Pace Alexander and Secretary Irvin C. Mollison to the heads of the two Baptist conventions, L. K. Williams, whose faction met at Kansas City, and Dr. J. E. Wood, whose group convened at Norfolk. "For too long a time," the Bar Association plea reads, "the legal profession and the ministry have remained aloof from each other." The day has come when all of the agencies of uplift for the Negro must combine for the common welfare. The National Bar Association is now prepared to make the initial moves for the great-众 of the American Church, and to purpose and function of the two professions. We wish to enlist the aid of the church generally in our fight for a real political, economic, and civic freedom and equality for the Negro. United by common aims and ideals, and upon the firm ground of right and justice, the church and the National Baptists are for the cause of the great-众 of the United Church, and to be upholding of the two professions and for the advancement of the Negro group." The association was represented at the Kansas City convention by Regional Director L. Amasa Knox of Kansas City, Mo., and Judge William H. Harrison of Chicago, Ill., and at Norfolk, Virginia, by Regional Director L. A. M. of the American Church, and Vice-President Charles E. Robinson of Washington D. C. Norfolk, Va.—(ANP)—Apprehension in educational circles in this state regarding the possible fate of Virginia Seminary and College at Lynchburg, because of its inability to meet its financial obligations, was somewhat dissipated here last week by the action of delegates to the 49th annual convention of the unincorporated Baptists, who took under consideration the recommendation of their president, Rev. J. Edmund Wood, Danville, Ky., that they devise ways and means to assume the support of the school and to guarantee its maintenance. This step upon the part of the Baptists came at a time when hope for the salvage of the Lynchburg institution had reached its lowest ebb and predictions were being freely made that it would be forced to close its doors. It was known that the school was in need of $75,000 immediately and it was believed that only a "modern miracle" could save it. The miracle may occur if these modern Baptists continue to agree and send the word down that the salvation of Virginia Seminary should be made a part of their program of public service. Information regarding the negotiations now being made was disclosed by a trustee of the school. There are indications that the possibility of the assumption of this task may have had the effect of diverting the intention of some of the delegations who are reported to have come to the convention prepared to launch an attack against the incumbency of Rev. Wood. Charges had been made through the newspapers that his term of office had been in place for a leader competent to lead his followers into the biggest fields of service and there was a demand made for a better trained man. But it seems that in making the recommendation regarding Virginia Seminary, Dr. Wood revealed himself in the possession of an object so worthy that the spirit of his adversaries was quieted. The resolution calling for the appointment of a committee to study Dr. Wood's recommendation and the serious situation at the college was passed Wednesday and on Thursday Dr. Wood was reelected president of the convention. This city extended a welcome to the thousands of Baptists that was infused with the traditional spirit of the church. Delegations came to the city by train and automobile, from nearly every section of the country, the East and Middlewest sending substantial units to join in conference with the customary large groups from the South and Southwest. The main section of the convention opened Wednesday morning in Second Calvary Baptist Church and the women's auxiliary in First Calvary Baptist Church. Both divisions were scheduled to be held on the second Monday with programs concentrated on the work of the foreign and home mission fields and religious educational activities. NORDIC MURDERER RELEASED ON BOND Ackerman, Miss.—(ANP)—Bunyan Carr, a young white planter, was released on bail of $1,000 at the preliminary hearing in connection with the killing of Buster Mitchell, one of his tenants. Carr claims that he has missed cotton for several weeks and went to Mitchell's home to inquire of it. Mitchell became angry about being questioned and the white man shot him when he picked up an axe. There were no witnesses to the shooting but many whites have expressed the opinion that Carr was justified in that Mitchell bore a bad reputation and was reported to have served a prison sentence for killing a white man. Jones, manager of the Willis Lunch Co. 89 The Arcade, and a sun attendant at the two restaurants, are being arranged by English Francis Checks, managing officer of the National Guide, who was refused service at the two restaurants. The Checks secured a warrant for William Jones who refused to serve him on August 25 after having words with the manager of the 29, with reference to eating. Three days later, accompanied by Mr. Jones, the Checks entered Mills Restaurant at 215 Euclid Avenue, and Mr. White. Mr. Checks entered the hands of lawyers and expects to bring separate. On four other occasions, Mr. Checks had trouble with restaurants in the Mills, about eight years ago, he was refused service in the same Mills Restaurant. The death of Mrs. Grimes, which occurred Sunday, was a distinct shock to the entire city and even in many sections of the state where she was known. Several leaders of the Ancient Order of Pilgrims from out of the city were present at the funeral services, while hundreds sent telegrams to the bereaved husband. C.—(ANF)—Sporadic attempts to organize aviation schools and clubs throughout various parts of the country, particularly the West, continue to trickle through news channels here, but little actual progress is being made in enlisting airmen for aviation studies. Of Commerce records do not give racial designations in their statistics upon flying students in the commercial fields, but these records do show that only a small percentage of the large list of aviation students are able to meet the flying requirement. The application of the Airman flyer's permits were said to average 600 a week. There were 14,580 for the last six months. But few of them ever learned to fly. Only fifteen per cent of the white boys making application ever complete the course. Department of Commerce officials say and many of the Airman flyers were accepted by temperament to become flyers. In the army and navy a similar condition exists. About 25 per cent of the students can qualify. There are those who feel that after all the Negro may prove to be particularly adapted to the air. There are many who are not. Three kinds of license: individual, pilot's license, and transport license. Dr. A. Porter Davis of Kansas City, Kansas, holds an individual license as do two colored flyers of Tulsa, Oklahoma. All three of these men were trained at commercial flying schools located in the City of Kansas. The flight of the Zeppelin has encouraged some wings to predict that ere long some of the brothers will be making application for a job as porter on one of the big dirtilers now that the pathway has been b只ed, but more serious observers are hopeful that the new airman will be able to make some of the Eastern fields where one colored entrants are practically harred and that the Negro may prove to be especially adapted for the air. FINAL NUMBER 17 MUSICIANS END NATIONAL MEET AT FORT WORTH By CARL DITON (For The Associated Negro Props) Fort Worth, Texas—The eleventh and last-most state of the country to have joined the association of Negro Musicians, has closed and the musical delegates have departed for various sections to assume their respective duties for the year. Every convention for the past ten years has possessed strong features, but perhaps the most glorifying circumstances connected with the meeting for this year was the most abominable event of the year, the prominent white citizens of Pt. Worth. From the opening of the great Sunday afternoon mass meeting held at the Coliseum to the presentation of a meeting, the M.P.M. Post. Moore, a so-called "New Religiousrist" to contribute to the customary six days. On Monday evening was the 1st of the day, the representatives from various state and local organizations expressed warm sentiments of welcome, including the Fort Worth Conservatory of Music, the M.P.M. Fisher, who had been a member of the M.P.M. Post. Moore, cleaners firm, was introduced to the audience. Mr. Fishburn spoke very wittily and suggested a spiritual service. It was then that one experienced M.P.M. Post. Moore, a so-called "Florence Cole-Talbert, prominent soprano, surprised the audience during its spontaneous burst of song with the incidental solo parts. On Wednesday afternoon the city roped off its main business street in order that its citizenry might witness an interestingly prepared civic parade in which floats appeared, portraying Negro spiritualism. Thursday evening's program consisted of offerings by Negro artists of national and international recognition: Florence Cole-Talbert, soprano; Louis Jones, violinist, and Jessie Conway; and the American Band of the First Sunday in the afternoon at a plenic and in the evening at virtually a duplication of the concert by the prominent soloists at Fort Worth the night before. The mornings throughout the week were devoted to business and to conferences at which Miss Alva McNeill, professor of music in the public schools of Fort Worth, and Dr. Albert Venting, professor of hymnology, Southwestern Baptist Seminary, through the courtesy of Professor I. E. Reynolds, also of the same institution, spoke. There were two painting exhibits here: successive afternoons and additional broadcasted live shows in the programs and Sunday school affairs. The attendance on the part of the delegation was good, although it was suggested that motor parties be organized in future years and concerts be given enroute to and from the convention as a means of not only stirring the audience, but also of the same throughout the country in the work of the National Negro Association but as a policy of charging at all concerts. The attendance at the free concerts was always a capacity one. But there was a perceptible falling off at the final, paid concert, so much so that the final was a卖点, and most of that was be driven to a society of charging at all concerts. Annual Payroll Around $110,000 The annual payroll of the Walker Company is said to be $110,000, all of which goes into the immediate hands of Negro women, girls, men, and boys. The company'sனufacatives 21 different articles, consisting of creams, soaps, powders, hair preparations, etc. Goods are shipped to all the states in the union and to 29 foreign countries, while every mail brings orders from some foreign country. The company is now advertising in four languages: English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. A translator for foreign languages is employed regularly while the office offers maintaining in several foreign lands. At present the Walker foreign agent is in Jamaica. Returning in our article to the Walker Building, there is a drug store on the ground floor operated by the company, as well as the coffee pot conducted in the basement. With an oriental atmosphere, the pot can serve 80 persons, specializing in salads, sadas, sundades and light luncheons, and has 18 employees. There are other enterprises, such as barber shop, shining stand, grocery store and pressing shop on the ground floor, but these are not owned and operated by the Walker Company. The Walker Drug Store has 8 employees, including three graduate pharmacists, while the beauty parlor and training school on the second floor of the building has 10 persons in its employment. This emporium serves as beauty culture center for colored Indianapolis, and ranks as one of the finest shops in the kind in the countryside. One of the Walker advertising department's present activities is the making and exhibiting of an industrial film, portraying the scenes of Walker departments and various branches throughout the world, with added pictures of the recent sessions of the National Neuro Business League and supreme lodge of the Colored Knights of Pythias, which convened in the Hoosier City during August. Taft, the old Missourian, left his money hidden so well, that it took many years to find even a trace of its wereahabs. Only recent- ly the impulse of the hidden old been partly solved. The remarkable deductions of Mr. Charles Martin, a self-educated historian, have been largely responsible for the partial so- lution. A shogun exploited in the window of the Talbott farmhouse. September 14, 1929 The House of the Hidden Gold, at the little Missouri town of Arkee, where the murderer Talbott murder occurred. The Invisible W. C. Fields was also associated with him for four years and they became close friends. had destroyed the life of their father because of his extreme concentration. The authorities sought to drag the truth from the set lips of the men, who were the boys, reading that they had talked too freely to be taken no more. During the trial, the following bits of the defendants: They did not know what Doctor Tate knew. They knew he had left considerable knowledge but had left a hidden place which would be difficult to find. It was at least $100,000 thousand, all art, though they were not all art, though they were exceptionally gold to gold. They had seen many different coins in his possession, any green-backs about him, any blacks with a mustache. He were a mustache. They refused to cloture them. He clotured. Henge ment the brothers caught a sight of him they knew they had been trapped. They gave up without a struggle. The Taleb boys were convicted and sentenced to be hanged. They were down on their knees when a double trap was sprung. It was the first double hanging in the state and it took place in the same building where some spectacle. The boys met their death unhappily. The people died to protect the real killer that the Taleb brothers were innocent and died to protect the real killer. What had become of the hidden gold? That was the question, and no one knew the answer to it. The old Taleb place was called the House of Gold. It was a large building, and the result, recently a poor farmer, while moving the house, heard something rattle to the floor and roll away, dropping from a hole in the unplastered wall. When the farmer saw it up and carried it away. And it was not a dream, for the Taleb gold was there. He and said one hundred dollars even for the killer. Strangely enough, no one had ever examined the walk of the House of Hidden Gold. Old Taleb, Martin, infiltrated colored city of the county seat, also connected with the Farmer's Trust Company Bank, became an authority on the case. Although he was only a small boy at the time. That was that. But the detective was not satisfied and had tried to get more information. Did they know what had become of their father's enormous wealth, or did they know the total wealth? They said they didn't know a thing about the money, but wished they did. They'd take it and get out of the country. They did not know how much he had to buy the money, but had been fully hidden and dead men did not tell tales. They stated further that the old gentleman's wealth had amounted to more than fifty thousand dollars at the time of his demise. This, it was believed, was primarily in gold. After this, the detective was unable to obtain more information of a worth while nature. The next morning he saddled his horse and rode to town. The next time the Talbot boys saw him he appeared at the house with the sheriff and had undergone a remarkable transformation in appearance, being newly and more of the same great gold, reprinted, specializes. Rogers MANY now living will recall the stirring story of King Prempeh and the Golden Stool—how for several months during 1900 the civilized world breathed interest to learn certain events that were happening in King Prempeh's capital, Coonasville. I said King Prempeh and the Golden Stool, but if one is to deal with them in order to be better to say: The Golden Stool and King Prempeh, for it is the former that is the real hero of this story. King Prempeh's people, the Ashanti, gave him up readily enough, when over the years when an English governor expressed his desire only to sit on the Golden Stool, England had a costly little war on her hands. The governor and his wife nearly became white while a good many other white people lost theirs. Great Warriors. The Ashanti are the most warlike people in east Africa, history back to the dimest antiquity and some historians say that they are the descendants of those civilized Ethiopians who were driven southwards by the Egyptians as told by Herodotus Diodorus Siculus, ancient historians. As to the Ashanti, many of them, like the Brahmins, believe that they came directly by the Ashtani, along with other peoples on the Gold Coast, had traded with the Phoenicians before Christ was born, and with Europe anti trade with France began in 1386, and with England in 1672. Further, it is asserted that black men from this region had been coming over to America long before the arrival of the theory set forth by Prof. Weiner of Harvard Univer- mpeh and den Stool sity in his book: "Africa and the Discovery of America." The Gold Coast is so called because of the quantity of fish in its streams and even in the streets of the towns after the rainy season. It was gold and the slave trade that had first brought the Europeans there. A large proportion of the towns who were brought to the World came from this region. The Ashantis are a very proud people, and not without cause. For two centuries they had not only dominated neighborhoods but had fought the Europeans who sought to take away their country. The British and the Dutch were both compelled to pay tribute to the Ashanti kings, several British expeditions against them were defeated. In 1833, a British expedition commanded by Sir Charles MacFarthy was sent to the port of New York, where he was made in the园. Charles's skull was made by King Rema, while the skull itself was placed in the top of the house, and the equivalent of the church in civil-land. For the next four years the British tried to conquer Ashanti in vain, and the land was to be sold. The land they held, they paid rent for the land they held. The white man laughed King Rema, "bring many canons from the land," but the bush is stronger than the cannon. In wealth, the Ashanti also ranked with the richest equesters in Africa. The land which, who went to the a treaty with them for Enfaril, said in his report: The chiefs as did their superior espionage, attendants, were Ashanti cloths of extremist life. The most common of the early foreign silks which had been unravelled to weave them in the same way were gold necklaces in intricately enough. "Some were necklaces reaching to the navel entirely of agry beads, a hand of gold and beads enslaved by the men of the war," he said. Ever since the dedication of the Houston Negro Hospital on June 19, 1926, the question of what is wrong with this institution has been uppermost in the minds of the colored citizens of this community and even the state. Now, from all sections of the country come inquiries seeking to know what is the trouble with and at the Houston Negro Hospital, and why it is that it is the only institution of its kind in America, or the world, where certain forces are willing to injure, if not destroy, the hospital in order to maintain one certain person in a position of power and authority. Of course, The Informer realizes that the idea of a hospital as a health center and not as a place of final resort before crossing the great divide, must be taught and impressed upon our people, who heretofore have regarded such institutions largely as the vestibule to death; but this educational program can not be accepted. The hospital has as its head some person in whom the people, for whom the hospital was erected to serve, have no confidence or goodwill. In opposing the present superintendent of the Houston Negro Hospital, The Informer wishes to reiterate that it has no personal dislike for the present head of the institution, nor has this paper poured any journalistic spleen upon any person connected in an official capacity with the local Negro hospital; but this paper possesses definite and well-fixed ideas and notions about the maintenance and operation of such a plant, and we venture to believe that the institution will be greatly affected by the present superintendent, nor with the system now in vogue in connection with the management and control of the hospital. The Informer takes the position that no member of the white race, it matters not what position he occupies, should try to force any Negro upon the colored citizenry of this or any other community, if the colored citizens object to the said person occupying such a position; and the fact that the Houston Negro Hospital is supposed to be a charitable gift to the Negroes of this community, does not alter this attitude one whit. There is an old adage that "beggars can't be choosers," but even mendicants should and do enjoy and exercise some rights which are warranted to all men by the laws of God and man. The community has reached the conclusion that the Negroes of Houston should be satisfied with anything, as it relates to this hospital, and that agitation for the removal of the present superintendent will cause the race to lose this institution sooner or later. If this hospital should be taken away from the Negroes of Houston because they object to a woman serving as superintendent who does not possess the necessary characteristics for the office, and who on the other hand has proven a millstone around the institution's neck, then the gift of the hospital is bare and its supposed ideals and purposes become a hollow mockery. The day of big stick, bluff, intimidations, threats, duress and extra-legal methods has passed, and there are some people who can not be driven or frightened from the path of right by any such procedure; and those who essay to invoke and employ such tactics are not sure that their efforts are futile. An enlightened public opinion will not countenance, condone or support any such program. Most assuredly, if the Houston Negro Hospital were given to the Negroes of this community, then these people certainly have a right to express their preference for the type of man or woman they desire to serve as superintendent of the institution, as well as having the right to express their preference. Going a bit further, these same colored citizens have the inherent and constitutional right to register their objections and protests against any person serving in an official role at this hospital, and for any one to charge that this opposition and objection to the present superintendent is being fostered and propagated by a minority "radical element" is a base and wilful fabrication and a parsimonious employee of the hospital. The same colored citizens are objecting to the present superintendent of the Houston Negro Hospital because she is a stickler for system and will not permit the institution to get into a slippad, happy go- lucky condition, is the idle chatter of malicious or misinformed persons; but what will efficiency and proficiency amount to, if same are not backed up with common sense, tact and disposition to get along with the people one is working for business on May 15, 1927, the numerous employees at the Houston Negro Hospital, under the reign and rule of the present superintendent and her chief Nordic adviser and devotee, have come and gone with regularity; and the ax has fallen recklessly upon registered nurses, office help and other employees about the premises. Are we to accept the explanation that all of these persons have the right to express their preference, incompetent or unfit for their various tasks, and the superintendent, like the kings of old, can do no wrong? Aside from the ruthless and reckless employment and discharge of hospital help during her administration, what has the present situation with the unique hospitalization plan evolved when the institution was formed? Boone, now pastoring one of the largest Baptist churches at Cleveland, Ohio—has been torn asunder, not because of any difference of opinion concerning the doctrines, polity and fundamentals of the church, but rather over offices and the "spoils." Charges and counter-charges have flown thick and fast from both factions, and, despite the fact that denominational agencies and causes are suffering due to lack of moral support and financial backing, both factions have raised sufficient funds to wage legal litigation in the courts of the land. Any denomination has drifted upon dark and dismal days when it must resort to carnal tribunals to settle and adjudicate matters purely religious and connectional; and our Baptist brethren in this state, by their continual and persistent wrangling, bickering and fighting, are not only injuring and hampering their own paring and disregarding but they are arresting discord and bringing disgrace upon their race and giving Christianity an ebony-haed optic. In order for belligerents to put a cessation to their battle, both sides must be willing to agree to an armistice, and if they are sincere in their *desires* for peace and resumption of friendly relations, their groups will make certain concessions to attain the desired end. God can not use any man or set of men in his human-reclamation and soul-salvation program, who wrangle and content about unprincipled and selfish matters. Isn't there some Baptist in Texas who can so marshal these forces that he can bring peace out of confusion and order out of chaos? Are we suffering with such a dearth of religious leadership among the Baptists in this state that no man is available to take the lead in healing the breech between these two warring and contending factions? After two years of court actions, newspapers articles, tirades and attacks on platforms and pulpits, district and state divisions, is it not possible that there is enough of the spirit of Jesus Christ left among these brethren to exemplify the teachings of their Master?
