Open Letter To The Rev. Blackshear
By WILLIAM PICKENS
(For The Associated Negro Press)
To the Rev. W. S. Blackshear, Rector,
Protract Episcopal Church of St.
Joseph.
McDonough St. and Tompkins Ave.
Reverend William S. Blackhair:
According to an undated statement
in the daily papers you have
announced during your last Sunday's
sermon that you do not want any
Negroes in your church. Even though
many others will condemn you for
that announcement, I have a truly
happy day. You can hardly realize what a relief
and a peace that announcement will
bring into my war-torn town. You see
that I am not alone. I am surrounded
the corner from your church.
I can look out of my back window and
see the sun shining on the ground
and I can hear your bells every time
they ring for services. I pass your
church doors every day twice, going
through the church every day. This
for over a year now, and my conscience was sitting heavy upon
my shoulders. I sacred portals even on a Sunday.
You see, you are the nearest road to heaven for me, and for fourteen years I have been able to take it. On Sunday mornings I have heard all your bells ringing, while my bones grew thinner and warmer within me, because of the way in which I was brought up. Every man has two knees and one of those selves told me to go to church and the other has just as many as one and one of those selves told me to go day-morning bones. On the side of the one self were only the Devil and the other self were Intelligence, Conscience, and my Bringing-up. Those are three powerful allies, and sometimes me were against my natural disposition to stay away from sermons and church ceremonies, especially among white people to weaken and to yield to the Devil, the idea of going to church, lazy zones, would whisper to me in my bed of Sunday drowniness: "Don't go to church, the preachers talk about 'universal brotherhood,' but they are hypocrites and not thing as human brotherhood for all men in 999 white churches out of the thousand, and it is not even the 999th. When such men speak of a particular church is not the one led by the people, they are just hypocrites, for they will be nothing but braggards and not why. Why, he would tell you go either to Heaven or to Hell through that church; if that were the only way for them to stay in heaven, they would stay to stay for an eternity in New York."
Thus the Devil and the better self have had it, up and down—round and square, and in the same sense of conscience—and, habit, that it sometimes looked as if the better self had dragged out of bed earlier a Sunday. But now you have joined forces with the Devil and the better self and I will be able to sleep soundly when your bell rings, or to pass your watch with a light heart. You have broken the impasse; as they say in digipostally clarified the situation." The Devil (and my larynx) will thank you. Seah!
White Women Were Slaves in Virginia
Winchester, Va—(ANP)—This state which boasts of a "racial integrity law" and a democratic primary law which prevents descendants of those formerly held in bondage from voting, was shocked Tuesday when a woman accused of bartering and trading in white women as goods, chattels, and articles of commerce was not uncommon here before the war of the revolution.
A court record showed that a white man, William Todd, had agreed to work for Samuel Pritchard for a year and he as a wager for that work, and he showed the name of Mary Hickey. He and Pritchard both agreed and covenant to find William Todd and Mary Hickey sufficiently armed during the time aforced, and at the expiration of the time to furnish each of them.

GAS ADVOCATES
STAGE SESSION
BEFORE COUNCIL
The hearing on the paralleling of gas mains on St. Emmuel and Jefferson streets before the city council Monday proved to be rather unusual in its scope.
The main advocates there for the Houston Natural Gas Company; there were also many advocates there for the Houston Gas and Fuel Company. Some advocates strongly argued municipal warriors, and one called a spade a spark in telling Mayor Richard M. Brown to disregard the wishes of the citizens expressed by petition, protest and otherwise.
It appeared that the main issue in question, the rights of the people to protest against the paralleling of gas mains in two streets, was looked in the general direction. Attorneys for both companies gave documentary evidence claiming a majority of signers.
It developed that the Houston Natural Gas itself wholly to the blocks in which the original requests for multi-domain signatures that were not entitled to appear on these streets in question. Attorney for the Houston Gas and Fuel Company all petitions be offered to the city, and that name be thoroughly checked by recurrent gas company involvement in conjunction with a professional or employee. This seemed to be consistently fair and the most practical action taken by the city council turned it down—into executive session, and almost immediately the city council turned it down—into executive session, and almost immediately the city council would request this official action (closed session). This official action (closed session) teeth took the position he did in his pre-election promise that all meetings council would be open to the public.

time to these Negro churches, which used the members now attending the church to lead them. "But beyond all that—and there is no one leasing around the bush about it—in this is a white church, and I insisted that Negro members will be permitted to remain until they can arrange to go to the church," Negro members will be mentioned. "The Texas pastor, running true to the state, stated that he took pride in the fact that he was a real friend of the church, that he hoped better than those who were criticizing him. This sentiment remained the education of the sector at the time."
Protesta From All Quarters
The report of the incident has brought about a wall of protest from various quarters. The S. X. A. A. C. P. board, holding a board, adding that the Texan be removed from the membership. Individuals, including face of H. I. Proctor, have been arrested and all races are permitted and welcome to worship, some the white rite for injecting jim-cissimus in the practices of the Texan. They added their protest in many instances, decrying the insult impaired with the Negro communicates of the St. Matteo.

That President Rhonda has brought to the presidency of the college the ability to lead a large, enthusiastic response with alliance and executive, and the acquaintance and confidence of a wide circle of students, an enthusiastic response which alumna, Dr. Rhonda, is giving to his leadership, situation are giving to his leadership.
Bishop Not Involved in Conventional Differences
Especially is it significant that Baptists in Texas, representing both sides of the state, divide the Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention, are united in their active interest in Bishop College and the encouragement of its new president. The policy of neutrality in convention has larger purposes, the college in its own interest has been consistently by President Ehnda, and his clear statement of the larger purposes, the college in its own interest, has not held of higher learning, has not only held the leaders of all factions in the convention to Dr. A. Gotham Negro Nominated For Portfolio In Congress; Fred Moore Beats Harris
SELECTS NEGRO FOR CONTEST AS FEDERAL SOLON
HUBERT T. DELANY
New York—Having overwhelmedly defeated his white opponent in the recent pennsylvania election, Huston T. Delany, Republican nominee in the 21st Congressional District, has begun an active campaign which, it is hoped and expected, will carry him to victory in the November election.
Campaign manager, William M. Kelly, who is also editor of the American News, made known last week the plan that he has adopted to increase the registration among Ne'er in the district.
"Delany Volunteers"
This plan calls for the organization of the "Daley-for-Congress Volunteers" to out get every eligible Negro vote in the district to register and vote if they are done the campaign manager by a huge majority. The Republican, the white Republican who tried to get the regular nomination, has been eliminated, and the Democratic party who live in the congressional district have promised Daley their support.
Funds Needed
On account of the size of the district, the population of which is over 100,000, the Republican will be tremendous, and the Delany campaign committee is making an appeal to prominent Negroes all over the country to support their thing toward it. Delany's fight is the fight of the Negro for representation in the county committee holds, and those who are able to contribute to his campaign should "we do not want and cannot expect white Republicans to nominate him for the county committee for us and for them all by themselves." Mr. Kelly said in an interview that the Republican party nominate another Republican for congress from this district, and it is up to us to finance
Other Primary Results
The primary election was quite the most heated one that has ever been held in Harlem, and showed clearly that the city was beginning to use his ballot for all it could.
Alderman Fred R. Moore, who was denied the Republican designation in the Nineteenth Assembly District, began by a good majority, defeating George W. Harris who stood with the white officer of the district who was opposed. He signed, defeated for renomination, Atty. Atty. Rivers and when the new county committee meets next week Col. Charles more expects to defeat him for district.
Up in the Twenty-first Assembly District, Hawkins, present Republican alderman, the primary, but his running mate William Whyman, white, was deserved for the nomination by Lamar Parks.
New York.—(ANP)—With the first battles of the primaries over, the victorious candidates are resting on their laurels; preparatory to digging in for a long bitter fight in the political battle of Harlem. All along the line, word has gone out that this is to be a battle to the finish, no quarter asked, none given, with every conceivable weapon trained against the enemy.
Starting out with the congressional candidate, Hubert Delaney, Harlem Negroes, enthusiastic as rarely they have been, swep him into power, with the aid of white supporters of the party in the 21st Congressional District, overwhelmingly crushing his opponent, William Mann, also a Republican who sought the designation. Opposing Delaney in general elections on November 5th will be Joseph A. Cavagan, Democrat. Delaney's strength over this white opponent was a revelation to his well-wisher and supporter. He was elated over his initial success and declares will sweep aside the Democrat candidate in the November election.
LEADERS HONOR ORPHAN LEADER
RIDDLE AT RITES; FACING CHARGES
BRIEF CEREMONY FOR CRUEL ACTS
Florello LaGuardia crushed his foe and opponents in the race for mayor flattening them as with a steam roller. Down in the 19th Assembly District, he defeated the New York Age, defeated his arch enemy, George W. Harris, in the nomination for admissibility to the bishop's district, Laverne Marperkins, independent colored Republican election over Connell's choice, William Whyman, in so conclusive a fashion that he was elected in November to assembly. This was also a bitter fight, as Perkins decided to enter the race at the last minute, in a local of the local district prominent politicians had assurat 11 of their supra-communal campaigns of the interciting fight.
Los Angeles, Cal.—(By The Associated Negro Press.) Metro-Medro-Golden State, the leading startling Nine Mine McKennay, 17-year-old beauty who leaped to fame in Rainuliel. Her arrival from New York, "Slicker" Garnick, assistant director of the Nine Mine, began casting people to work behind her in a new feature, "Dancing girls, a sycophant barber shop, shining stands and massage robes, all operating to jargon terms, are favored of the vehicle."

JUVENILE DANCER STARS IN CHICAGO
Chicago, IL—(ANP)—In little Miss Delberta Lee, the 12-year-old daughter of Delbert Lee, one of Chicago's foremost interior decorators, Chicago houses of a juvenile dancer of Miss Lee has studied under Hazel Thompson Davis, Nicholas Sankhala, Turleen Griffes, Georges Manloff, and other leading dancing teachers of Chicago. One of the most accomplished artists of the juvenile group and has carried stellar dancing roles in several productions here.

New York Maiden Is Modern "Cinderella"
She was invited down for a tryout, along with 200 other girls, but Edith was not invited. Now she is a member of that fast dancing chorus of the number two company, starting the long hard climb up the stairs, working and tugging upward, happy in her belief of the Ginderahe story, the story of the girl who was admiring world before her. This pretty little Harlem girl vows she will make good—and the determination in her eyes will make her a star.
Mobbing, Whipping White People
One of the jurers "went mad" *went mad* in time to save sixteen white defenders on that jury, but he broke out and took the case to the jury. Perhaps there are other marmots on that jury, but he broke out and defended *ne* defendants convicted, he said. He then took them himself. Then he can be convinced to pray and preach and sing, and always tries to strike up some sort of alliance with God. Whenever you hear a fellow calling for God, instead of a manad, maybe both, as in this better look out. He is a courtdrol or a manad—maybe both, as in this question. The question was not God and the Pentateuch, but whether those poor defenders were committed to strike or committed to commit their murder committed to an act of self-defense when they killed an offender in attacking them. These poor whites were strikes, the policemen were in attacking them, and the police were in clear. It matters not that some of the strangers and some of their leaders were in attacking to do with the right of self-defense or the crime of murder. There are recognized by law. A killing that would not be a miller—or a no-mur

Mr. James being a New England handler handed this matter with that sort of confidence, and he was dignitary with him. Colored Co-Eds Oppose Separate Quarters At Michigan University; Regents Abandon Dormitory Project
Detroit, Mich.—(ANP)—During the past few weeks there has been considerable agitation on the part of Negrito, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and inwarding the plans of the regents in establishing a separate dormitory for the use of Negro young women in attendance in the state's largest institution of learning.
Action to grant the erection of such a dormitory was under consideration by the regents of the university, but the proposal was dropped because of the negative impact of the Negro co-eds at the institution raised strenuous objections, stating that they felt that the move segregated the Negro students and that segregation was the motive behind the action to grant the building of a Negro co-ed at the University of Detroit. The statutes of Michigan provide that there shall not be any bar raised from the state treasury and participles from the state institution receiving revenue from the state treasury and participles from the inhabitants of that state, maintains that inasmuch as persons are not required to be collected and assessed, there must not be any discrimination or bar rules against such persons. Any deviation from that who would constitute a mindless person or persons to discriminating (be they of any kind whatever) in such persons would be both. However, the new dormitory is being financed by the Guardian Trust and some doubt that it would legally be classed as a "state institution". Obviously, some classify that it would be classified other than a state institution, and that if it is not a "state institution", then people have gone beyond their confines in permitting it to be erected and financed.

CLARENCE MUSE URGES RACE TO SUPPORT STARS
New York City—Replying to an inquiry by Walt White, assistant secretary of the National Association for Advancement of Colored People, wrote a book called *Lovewood*, *Clarence E. Muse*, star of *Hearts in Dinky*, writes that color photographs of African-American women and Negro motion pictures if they wish real opportunity from the prosecution. “It is indeed an exacting problem for the Negro artist,” writes Mr. Muse. “He is scarcely considered at the moment he has been received as an artist. And the most striking thing is that he holds that him out.” The producers are moved solely by hose office appeals and whiles of the many thousand distributors and the theatre managers who reflect the recounters to producers. “The recent production *Hearts in Dinky* is particularly to a two reel experiment, a novelty. It grew while production was in progress and repeated often, because they are of the opinion that the will appeal for the present to white audiences are not of the opinion that the will appeal for the present to white audiences are not of the opinion that the will appeal for the present to the discerned of *Hearts in Dinky* by the producers, from colored photos to black and white. “We must build ourselves into, through the same process that other artistas have done.”
If a Negro artist had a half million or more serious letters pouring into the press for a return of that artist, he would soon receive a delightful contract, more pictures of the style asked for by the artists, one of these efforts please understand that new opportunities would be open to the artists. Let the serious, ambitious Negro public direct their letters to producers Brothers, Brothers, Gold-Walden-Mayer, Paramount, Pathé, KOO and other artists, the names of colored artists heading productions. We fight. We pay a large sum of money for picture entertainment. Get enthused. No one is enthused now but white audiences, we encourage them to paint a matter of course. Here is a field to put over a great antelope for race

GOLDEN TEXT - The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting and righteous unto children’s children.
PRIORITY TITLE - Shortest Hours
INTERMEDIATE TITLE - Intermediate and Senior Topics
TOUGH PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPICS
TOUGH PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPICS
in the Exile and the Restoration.
The grade of the class the aptitude of the scholars and the genius of the teacher are factors which determine the method of review. For adult the following suggestions are made:
Study the lessons of the quarter as illustrating the philosophy of history in God’s dealings with His people in their capacity and restoration. An assignment of topics should be made a adult school student should be expected to use this method. The following subjects might be missed:
From the Exile. Permitted Israel to Go Into Exile.
What Changed Views of Life Resulted from the Exile.
Suffering of the Exile Upon Prophecy.
The Relationship of Divine Churches.
1. Character Study.
Assess the outstanding heroes of the quarter's lessons to members of the class to have their report. This as a way to keep students in week in advance. Some of the outstanding characters for consideration are: Ezekiel, Daniel, Nebuchadnez, Ezra
III. Summary of Contents.
This method is usable at all times and can be adapted to most of the grades. The following suggestions are made: Lesson 7 for July—Before Ezekiel was commissioned as a prophet he was given a vision of the Almighty. Afterward he was sent to the mental knowledge of God's Word. Lesson for July 4—Ezekiel set forth personal responsibility as bearer of the word of the Almighty to whom he ministered. Ezekiel's responsibility was to hear God's Word and sound the warning. The people's response to Ezekiel's plan for the world through them. Lesson for July 21—Ezekiel is the prophet of hope. He ministered to Israel in captivity. God sent him to Ezekiel to minister to the plan for the world through them. Lesson for July 28—Because Daniel made the Lord the arbiter of his life's dream and his king's king dream with its interpretation. Lesson for Aug. 4—While Beeshek zar and his birds were engaged in a hard recorded divine judgment. Lesson for Aug. 11—Because of jeousy certain wicked men plotted Daniel's downfall. They trumped up the king's foreign religion. Though the king abdicates of the king was executed for his treason, the king were cast to the Toum and destroyed.

MEMPHIS LOSES ORPHANAGE AS RESULT OF FIRE
Memphis, Tenn. — (ANP) - Rescued Ankton, the 20-year-old girl who died in a car accident on the Simon Settlement home here several days ago, which caused the death of eight tots, was arrested Tuesday for murder of an arsonist and murder of an armor man.
The girl that was arrested the state of fire for revenge on account of a whipping which she had received earlier in the day. She not only was arrested, she had clashed she had fired to other buildings of the home at various times and the Orphanage License Revoiced Following the investigation of the fire, William G. Hendrick, state director of public welfare, ordered the state to investigate the following four reasons for the revoking of the license: the orphanage have all been removed to other institutes where they will receive prophecies. The former home now has no equipment nor building in which to operate. The charges made and not answered and those made and answered continue the orphanage and from the institutes which could not justify the revocation. The case of the orphanals should be considered as a new experiment in which different and new standards are being applied to the question on this basis and in consideration of the three former orphanages.
Seek Funds and Reinstatement
Notwithstanding the report of the director of public welfare, the directors of the institution, under the lead of the president, have made striking efforts to secure funds for the creation of new buildings and for restatement in the building of the institution.
Girl's Case Discussed
There has been much discussion of the murder charge of eight counts of kidnapping, lodged against Rosebud. Attorneys have been appointed to defend her and she will be thoroughly examined by the judge, who will be mining whether she is a pry-mane.

Here is an excellent novel which tells how a woman wises to their own race for genuine happiness, comfort and ushering them away from the world. A note that this was also appeared in *Bun* by Jesse Bedouin Faucer.

I will better get to work when I am taking to dance. I come to him and I will have to come to him and I will have to come to him and I will have to do this. But if I only have I will surely commit

AMERICA LEADS WORLD IN WORK FOR NEGRO RACE
Lake Junalunaka—America has led the world in a practical demonstration that the Negro is edible, but the Negro is not edible to the Negro justice in courts of law and in developing his economic future, according to Dr. W. W. Alexander, director of the Commission on Negro Education, speaking to the school of missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in session here.
To a Southernisser of Virginia, Dr. Alexander must go the credit for introducing into British passions in Africa an educational system based on the teachings of Dr. Dillard, as head of the Jesse Slater board, a philanthropic foundation dedicated to the education in the South, was a member of the commission sent to Victoria to primitive peoples and laid out a system based on what has been done in
With reference to the White House incident, Dr. Alexander said four that Mr. Hower as a Quaker holder as part of his family, the equality of the two presidents, President her guest list is harply told that she will attend, when the president of Liberia comes to America, it will not be an impediment to meet the widow not changed any opinions in the South. JIM-CROWISM IN RELIGION!
Apropos of the attitude assumed by the white rector of a Protestant Episcopal church (white) at Brooklyn, New York, who served notice recently upon his colored parishioners that their presence was no longer desired as members of his Nordic congregation, race prejudice in the religious realm is becoming more manifest; and it begins to appear that the so-called Christian church will never be a potent factor in bringing about more amicable relations between the colored and white races in this country, and in establishing the "fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man" era here on earth.
The mere matter of two different and distant races worshipping the same God, in the same church, at the same time and listening to the same message, is not, in itself, an act of "social equality," a misneron for social intermingling and social association; for the Founder of our Christian religion proclaimed His gospel to and served among all elements.
When He was criticized severely for daring to eat with publicans and sinners. He defended His conduct by citing attention to the fact that the well need no physician, but they who are sick are the ones in need of such medical services.
Whenever the Master saw suffering humanity, He did not stop to inquire the racial identity or social status of the suffer, but he forthwith proceed to render the type of service best suited for the individual.
He did not establish His great church along the lines of color and caste, but He made His religion rather inclusive and quite democratic—whoseover will may come and drink of the water of life freely; yea, they were invited not only to come and drink without regard to their station in life, but to even partake of the bread of life without money and without price.
When He fed the vast multitude on the mountainside, we have no written account where He segregated the different races before permitting them to feast at the greatest outdoor spread in sacred or secular annals.
When the Savior was treading the "lone wine-press" by Himself and when the cross He was dragging to Golgotha's rugged heights began to tax His physical being. He uttered no objection to Simon the Cyrenian (an ebony-hued follower and friend in hour of sore distress) assisting Him by bearing the cross part of that fateful and journey.
During His earthly career, the Great Teacher enunciated a gospel of love and peace, and counseled that His followers would love those who despitefully use them, "love and hate not."
While the Holy Writ states that the Great Head of the church came unto His own and they received Him not, it also adds that those of all races who did receive Him, them He made heirs and joint-heirs with His heavenly Father.
If all followers of Christ are Christians, and, as such, are all members of one big family, it is rather difficult to harmonize jim-crowmish and race prejudice in religion with the teachings, doctrines and activities of the Founder of the Christian church.
When it comes to sports, athletics and other purely worldly events, there is very little race prejudice in evidence, and even in the bourbon South the color line is often forgotten or overlooked at such gatherings; but as soon as we invade the realm of the supposed Christian church, where all followers of Christ are supposed to be brethren and sisters—even in the supposed more enlightened sections of the nation—Brer James Crow and Sister Race Prejudice are very much present, and it is becoming exceedingly difficult for the word of God to get a decent hearing in most of the self-styled Christian churches of America.
Instead of preaching a message of love and goodwill, most of our white protestant ministers are either catering to the whims and prejudices of their Nordic parishioners, or conjuring up schemes to keep alive the fires of racial rancor and class distinctions.
While the average Negro has no desire to foist himself upon white people, either in religious, social, fraternal or civic circles, the black man can not subscribe to the doctrine of jim-crowism, the discrimination and proscription which is practiced and practiced in the average so-called white Christian church in this country.
In fact, the "new Negro" is losing faith in the white man's brand of Christianity, which preaches hate and practices all types of horrors and outrages, even to lynching and other forms of hellish and humnil heathenism.
If Jesus Christ were alive today and the possessor of a dark skin, like many present-day members of his race both in America and in the world, the New York rector and his ilk would exclude the Great Head of the church from attending religious services in his house of worship. (Let us pray!)
