"BETTER BISHOP" RALLY

HOSPITAL BOARD QUESCENT
The alumni, under-graduates and
friends of Bishop College, institution
of higher learning located at Mar-
shall, are being called upon to con-
tribute $5,000 to this school during
the month of March. Dr. drive will
only last 30 minutes and President
Rhoads is calling upon all friends of
Bishop to rally to the cause and help
kind under the new colored president
of the school—a signal success.
In connection with this special
financial effort, it appears to this writ-
ing that the local Bishop Club, organized
during the past winter, should be re-
manded in theance to be made in Houston to a substantial amount for the school during this
30th week.
Here hoping that Profs. John R.
Grisby, H. C. McGruder, Rev. E. L.
Brucky, M. C. McGruder, Rev. E. L.
start the club in functioning, not only
for this special rally but as a per-
manent organization in our community,
will get busy at once and
not, we should all unite our forces,
contribute our bit and help make the
first financial project of the new co-
lege of Bishop College
a huge success.
In a recent issue, we discussed
the apparent anti-Negro attitude of
Bachelor institution, Company
Bachelor institution, as well as to the
company's failure to employ Ne-
gro business, as well as to the call-
ing of prejudicial advertising employ-
ment publications in quest of white buil-
dings.
It has come to our ears that the above gas company, through some of its employees, has still trying to prejudice prospective white customers by charging them higher prices than any company, owned by the Moody-Stearns interest, is a "nigger-loving" company, arguing apparently, upon the grounds that Houston Gas and Fuel Company give employment to Negroes and pay them higher prices. While preaching one doctrine to white proponents in one section of the city, broadcasting the fact that it is impossible to afford the salemen endeavoring to sell their service to colored prospects through the kinds of flattering offers, and adultery refusing to discuss the policy of employment of Negro laborers, as well as its refusal to seek openly the Informer no brief for the Houston Gas and Fuel Company, but as between a company which fails or does not employ its business reciprocity and to discard color in the conduct of its business, business reciprocity and to discard game in keeping with good business rules and knows neither color, creed or mansure in its business practices, in keeping with the latter every time; and offer no excuse or apology for so doing, and have always defended and protected the ideals and institutions of this rebellion, and spend it here, which can not be said truthfully of the Mexicans and other foreign elements. The Negroes are patrons of the Houston Gas and Fuel Company, many of them for years—have launched its gaudacious career in our fair city; and it is one of our racial charm and to stand by our true and friendly friends.

The Informer herewith reproduces a telegram received from Rev. W. L. Dickson, pastor of the El Bethel Baptist Church of Dallas and founder and former president of the Dickson Colored Orphanage at Gilmer, Texas, telling the outcome of the case, styled E. L. Dickson et al vs. E. Arlington Wilson et al, same being an appeal from the ruling of the judge of the district court at Sherman, in holding originally with Wilson and his faction in the legal controversy over presidency of the convention.
The Dickson faction appealed the decision of the lower court, in the celebrated fight within the ranks of the Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention of Texas, and now, according to information conveyed in Rev. Dickson's night letter to The Informer, the Dickson faction has been victorious, and the Court of Civil Appeals at Dallas has ruled in favor of the Dickson faction of the convention.
Rev. Dickson's telegram follows:
The case in the Court of Civil Appeals has been reversed and remanded in favor of E.L. Harrison. The Harrison and Dickson case. The decision was in favor of E.L. Harrison as president of the convention. We were given everything our attorneys asked for and the case is dismissed. There will be no more law suits in that particular. Remanding the case and dismissing it puts us in a position where there can be no more trial in court, so that Harrison has nothing to do but give orders as president of the Baptist Mission Church. The decision moved and get up Fort Worth property and all other properties that have been given away. God has wonderfully blessed us. Please publish the same.

NORTH CAROLINA FLORIDA COURT ATTORNEY FREED TO HEAR "WHITE BY COURT DECREE PRIMARY" CASE
Houston. Tex.
Edenton, N. C.—(By The Associated Negro Press.) The much-heralded and talked of case of Philip Esoffery, Durham attorney, charged with the murder of a man he was in front Friday morning when Judge N. A. Sinclair, in rendering his decision, declared: "In this case, if I had no evidence that the defendant was incited with any corrupt intent or that he knew the affidavit which he sawed was false." The case grew out of charges that Lem Pritchard, star witness for the defendant, Percy Killer, who was charged with the murder of a white man, and represented by Esoffery, had been urged to give perjured testimony and to sweep to a false affidavit. The court maintained that the Negro attorney did not solicit him to perjure himself and presented his statement. Trial case was tried here because attorney was a trial defender did not think that a fair trial could be had crowded and the abrupt ending of the trial was a distinct shock to the speculation, expecting a long out legal battle.

FLORIDA COURT TO HEAR "WHITE PRIMARY" CASE
New York—Argument on the Florida "white primary" case, arising out of denial of vote to a Negro, will be heard in the Florida State Supreme Court to the Nation! Association for the Advancement of Colored People by F.W. Marsh, attorney in charge of the case.
Suit is being brought by a colored citizen, H. D. Goode, for $5,000 damages against election officials who denied a vote in the primary election last April. This action will test the attempt to evade the U. S. Supreme Court in the Texas "white primary" case, where it was held states could not exclude Negroes from voting in party primaries. In the case, it was sought to vest the power of prescribing voters' qualifications in state primaries. The national office of the N. A. A. C. P. is helping the Pennsaukee branch to finance this case and has contributed

OHIO GOVERNOR
URGES NEGRO BE
ACCORDED HELP
Cincinnati, Ohio—Declaring that the Negro race, although desirous of becoming useful etikens, cannot be overcome by any other Myer N. Cooper, speaking at the New York University Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, Walter Avenue and Altoona Street, said he believed restricted immigration of the Negro population of those already on American soil, and afford the Negro a chance to become economical and socially happy. He said more than 60 years the Negro race has grown up from slavery to heightened status like period of time in the history of the world, the governor declared in 1970. This race was an un-American principle, is heartening to take account of these things, the governor said, "and to pay ourme of praise to men and women with much to handcap and to have a great progress despite handicaps, but also that we shall better understand with certainty of a better morrow.
"Much has been said of the white Negro race and has a debt to this race," the governor said. "The colored man has a right to his chance; to his opportunity to succeed in society and comfort and make of them a decent, useful, self-respecting come—decent, useful, self-respecting, discriminate against a people, who are sincerely trying to get on to do their part as good citizens, in to make an outy against the Negro race, and little attention to color after all in making a place for a man, provided he is commoning in an uncommon way.
"I believe we ought to take care of the Negro race, and give him his chance, and, therefore, I am for restricted immigration." The governor pointed out that six and a half million of the white population are in pro-immigration, while the Negro race was limited to 10 percent.
Believing that great good will come from aiding the Negro process is important, the company appoint a commission of outstanding colored people to consider ways and means and to provide greater opportunities for them in securing profitable employment.

It was hawkins' viewpoint, it appears to us that all patrons who paid this increased light rate are due a relation, the difference between their annual rate and the amount charged lately. While newspaper reports state that the Houston Lighting and Power Company paid an increased rate for power on a domestic purposes, and that their patron were taken advantage of increased rates as during the past two months, what about refunding the patron for being penalized by their council approving or granting such course on the part of the Houston Lighting and Power Company council approving or granting such course on the part of the Houston Lighting and Power Company. "We should eat something every day, must be healthy, something must be at my mind, mildly, torn or grown, and we should do a little grinding. The Court of Civil Appraisals has handed down a decision as telegram to the governor. It is still broadcasting it all over the state, he and his running mate, White, and he is not the governor. He did not the Harrison and Dickson faction. No such question was ever committee and one of his men objected to convention, Rev. L. K. This obligation is like unto the obligation to God in that it centers in the measure of love is not the absolute limit of human capacity. That unto our neighbor is "as my self, our neighbor is a finite being, our neighbor is a finite being, Who is my neighbor? This is answered by the story of the good samaritan in 19:30-39. Our neighbor is one who lives where we are, the question of where we live, but of our help. Some of the ways we can love our neighbor, as suggested by the lesson committee are: L. by cooperation (Nebh 4:15-28). The calls of Jerusalem needed to be answered by the enemies strong. Nebh could not have done it alone, though work all the days of his life, but every day of his life was a reality a short time. Racial solidarity is a reality, "No man liveth unto himself," therefore human life is lived at its best in cooperation.
2. By the strong bearing the inframities of the week (Hom. (B5:17) and other). We are given strength, not to use for ourselves, but that we may help usin the week. We are not to use an example in this lection. *Christ if He had pleased Himself. He never would suffer nature and suffered the shame of the cross. The rich are to help the poor. They may intimately consider helpful service to the poor.*
3. By rendering bourbon service (Mark 14:35). The supreme business of life is to serve, not to be served. *Christ came to suffer the poor.* The minister (Mark 14:35). *Christ though equal with God, Himself Himself to become the servant of men. The man must be the only way man can possible tender bourbon service to others is to follow this way man can possible tender bourbon service to others is to be in as Christ is in the Lord of our lives.*

All our beliefs have rights which must be recognized to accomplish our mission. These rights include of mind and kindness (Vol. 2:128). This kind of treatment finds its roots in the belief that children - wives and business, parents and children, mothers and servants. Fall in love to tender love is a source of joy. By giving to others (Jos. 2:14) Certainty alone itself in practice strong and valuable giving. To process have faith and be deity in the process to give the lie to our professions.

During the world war a desperately deserved surrender and an equally deserved surrender of Englishmen were to be made. The Englishmen were murdered by "Murter" and "Mother" through ignorance of each other's language they found in the Englishmen's books and books. They made each other feel that they must pray together, and together they prayed "Unser Vater der Welt" and "Our Father which art in heaven."

HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1929
HARLEM NEGROES WAKING UP
Judging from recent election returns from New York City, the Harlem Negroes are waking up politically, and, not only were three colored candidates successful in being nominated for city aldermanic posts, but one young Negro was nominated by the Republican party as candidate for United States representative from the Twenty-first Congressional District of New York.
These colored candidates will enter the autumn election facing strong and determined opposition, both in the shape of Democratic and independent opponents; but by maintaining political solidarity and the employment of some "horse gumption," it ought not to be a difficult task for the Harlem voters not only to elect aldermen, but to send another Negro to the United States congress.
Having been conscious of their political power, the Catholics played the role "name and show-bound," and they should not permit any minister forces to influence them in casting their ballots against these colored candidates.
There has always been considerable rivalry between the Negroes of New York City and Chicago, with the blanks in the latter city playing more partisan politics, while the racial brethren in the nation's metropolis have operated more along the independent line in politics.
In order to send Hubert T. DeLany, Republican congressional nominee of color, to the lower house of congress, the race voters of Harlem, who constitute a majority in said district, must emulate examples last faintly. The Republican branch has unnatched to the polls in mase and sent Oscar DeFriest to congress.
We are glad to observe that Harold Mergers are walking up

WHITE UMPIRES AT NEGRO GAMES
Being the first and only race publication in Texas to take a definite and determined stand against colored colleges using white officials at the base and foot ball games played between the various college clubs in this state, and having played no small part in breaking up that practice. The Informer would not be consistent if it should endorse and approve the course pursued here last Sunday by the promoters of the so-called "Negro world's majors," who employed two white umpires for the final bill of the league. The Kansan City Monarcha, champions of the National Negro League, and the Houston Black Buffaloes, champions of the Texas-Dakhoone Louisiana League, were clashing here on the diamond for the mythical premier honors of the colored baseball world, and three games had been played with Negro umpires officiating.
Players on both teams had done a bit of squawking about and against the brand of umpiring in the series, while the local fans lilacous were riding the arbiter brought here from the major stadium. Last Saturday one of the Buffs, angered at what he considered a bad decision, struck the Kansas City umpire, and created quite a score on the playing field; but police officers and players quelled the incipient uprising and the bellionne Buff was hannibalized from the park.
Such incidents have transpired quite often in white games, both amateur, semi-professional and professional; but we have never seen any white club ownership or ownership because of such fractures between white players and white umpires.
If two teams, representing the best expands of the national gantine in their respective circuits, can not play a series of games and submit to the decisions of colored arbiters, without backtracking and fighting, instead of employing white umpires the club owners should disband their teams and seek other fields in which to invest their money and engage their time and talent.
The Saturday outbreak was a disgraceful and unwarranted affair, but such fiascos are staged in the best regalized white leagues, yet the white umpires continue to handle the infamous and their downfall and uphold by lignum officials, club owners, and even the public.
To our mind, those few Negroes who gave the two white umpires an answer when they appeared upon the playing field had Saturday, the type of Sambo, who are obsessed with the damn "forcifer complex."
Finally, we must take our race with its faults and short-comma, or become allies to our racial group.
NEGRO ORDERS AND THEIR PRINTING
The followers has never been able to comprehend why some of the leaders in our fraternal organizations still persist in giving out printing, or hand of R, to priests who not only are not
members of said secret orders, but who are not even identified with the Negro race.
Only last week our attention was called to a receipt card of a certain Negro fraternity, which any colored printer in Texas could produce, which was printed in an office that does not embody one Negro and that black man serves only in the jailor role.
Not a single member of the printing establishment, which printed these cards, is connected with this particular order, and not one solitary member of this fraternity is employed even in a menial capacity with this printing concern.
There are two or three Negro printing establishments in Texas which can print practically all the printed matter needed by the Negro fraternities and other racial organizations, but instead of printing these cards, they lead the leaders preach from the huestos of Texas in corraling members, they pursue another policy and thus impoverish the members of their own orders who have invested large sums of money in printing equipment to serve the printing wants and needs of the various fraternities, and to give worthwhile employment to members of the Negro race.
When members of that fraternial leader desire publicity and are very anxious that they and their order be "sold" to the Negro contingent, they never forget the colored newspapers; but as soon as the publicity matter is obtained and the desired results accomplished, they forget these race publishers and printers and rush pencilel to printing offices owned and operated by men who are neither members of secret orders nor connected with our race.
This is not a gospel of race hatred, but merely a frank discussion of the manner in which so many race leaders continue to "fatten frogs for snakes."
If the members of our race are to be provided avenues of employment outside the field of domestic or menial labor, the race leaders must play their part in making possible such businesses, but it can not and will not ever be done if the heads of Negro fraternal organizations persist in taking bread out of the mouths of members of their orders and race, and giving it to members of other races. Self-preservation is the primal law of God and man, and the Bible asserts that the man who will not provide for his own household is worse than an infidel and has denied the faith. To add insult to injury, or vice versa, all of these fraternal leaders, who are guilty of such practices, are drawing handsome salaries for their official services in said orders; yet they show their gratitude by taking the money of these hard-working Negroes and spending it with printers who are perfect aliens, speaking racially and fraternally.
Neither graft nor gratuity should influence any race leader in taking away from his race revenue and substantial support and according to that other races, and the man who continues to commit such acts stamps as being unworthy of the high standards of the profession, and the cabinets and members of such orders to see that this practice is discontinued, or the official guilty of such an unwise and unsound policy defeated for office.
RAILROADS AND NEGRO PASSENGERS
During recent years we have observed that some of the railroad systems in Texas are not providing porters for colored coaches on some of their trains operating in this state, with the result that colored passengers are compelled to entrain and detrain as best they can at the various stations along the lines. The Southern Pacific Lines operate three passenger trains serving colored beds, which make no provisions for porters in the Negro coaches, and colored female passengers are forced to board and leave these trains unaided with heavy luggage and baggage. On neither the Austin, Victoria nor Shreveport division does the Southern Pacific Lines maintain a porter for the colored coaches, yet this system enjoys a large colored patronage on all three of these divisions.
Neither the white trainman (flagman) nor conductor pays any attention to colored passengers on these trains, and it is a travesty upon justice and decency to note how colored passengers must get on and off these trains.
The Missouri-Kansas Texas Railroad Company ("Katy") provides no porter for the colored coach between Waco and Houston, the porter leaving the North Texas trains at Waco on the trip to South Texas, and boarding the trains at Waco on the South Texas trains to North Texas.
Despite the fact that colored passengers are forced to change trains and cars at Waco, when enroute from North Texas points via the "Katy" to South Texas points, no porter is available to assist these passengers in transferring their traveling luggage to another; while the same situation exists on the trip from South Texas to North Texas by way of this same railroad system.
The Informer has also been informed that the Missouri Pacific Lines, on trains number 11, 12 and 13, operating on the Houston-Brownsville division, not only fail to provide porters for the colored coaches, but that both male and female colored passengers are compelled to employ the same toilet.
Yet colored passengers on all these trains must pay the same first-class fare paid by passengers of other races, who have better cars and better service.
No other business concern in the state could pull off some of the stunts staged by some of these Texas railroads, in charging for one type of service and then giving another, not seen to give a rap whether colored passengers ride in freight cars, or walk, it is time that the Negroes of Texas should manifest some concert effort in their own traveling welfare, and to see it that these railroad companies, which are enjoying considerable Negro patronage, provide the same accommodations and service for colored passengers as that in vogue for passengers of other races.
With bus lines and automobiles reducing the annual income of the railroad systems in Texas from passenger travel, and with the prospect that good highways and automotive traffic will make still greater inroads in the near future, it appears to the Informer that heads in the railroad would create a little busier environment and to it that all their passengers are made friends rather than foes of their several lines.
Any merchant who short-changes a customer, or gives him short weight, will not only lose that customer, but makes himself liable for court action.
Yet the railroads of Texas can charge passengers of one race for first-class traveling service and then provide them with a type of service which is far inferior to that given the same class of service. There is nothing fair, honest, or equitable in such procedure. The Informer is hereby calling attention to this practice with the view that it will be remedied at once. If colored passengers are to be given the worst type of accommodations and service on the passenger trains in Texas, then the railroads should be fair, honest and honorable, and only charge passengers of first-class service and service which they receive as passengers on these lines.
OPINIONS
THE END OF CO-RACIAL POLITICS
By KELLY MILLER, Howard University, Washington, D. C.
the DoP the Prison design would only apply to a New South Congressional candidate. The aggrieved Negro has physical dominance. This could have little or no direct effect on the South or on the Republican party at large.
The conduct of the government without regard to race or color constitutes the sum and substance of the reconstruction spirit. For the brief period of eight years, "equality" was the watch word and rallying cry Physical difference of race appear to the eye was kept in the unconscious background of race, so the unequal terms, dislike neither the superiority complex on the one hand, nor the inferiority complex on the other.
I am describing a condition which I deplore. I do not appear of what I deplore but somebody must tell the Tek-Tek that the watch-leaves on the wall and dislodge the dust of design on the distant horizon must not deceive those intertwined with false hopes of security. The only way to protect to meet the storm is to wear a watch.

The citadel of co-racial politics began to tumble with the capitulation of President Hayes. The pronouncement of President Taft, that he would abolish the racial division, such placement was distasteful to the white people of the community marked the second definitive stage in the undoing of the racial "entate-cordiale." The rise of the lily-white race in the former of the order of things.
The reign of the political bandwagon are in *Ilysheh* hands. The Negro leaders must either take the back seat, or like Achilles, sit in their impudent tents. Ben Davis, Bob Church and Walter Cohen did not attend the Ilysheh bandwagon. Mr. William, Mrs. Beesy, by proxy, looked on with silent regret. Perry Howard in and his silent thoughts were worth many pennies. Professor Hawkins heard of what, and taken place the next day, the same as you and I. The simple fact that Mr. Hawes does not pose for photograph with Morga delgata may, do, be suggestive and significant. In my last release, I suggested the reenunciation of Mr. Hawer. I then knew as much as the Ilyshe- trend of things as has subsequently been revealed by the reorganization of the Republican national committee. Mr. Hawer is indeed a Ilyshe- but all white Republicans, with the exception of Chicago and La Guadin of New York, are Ilyshe-
The recent action of the Republican party in placing at the head of the national committee a man of open and avowed lily-water persecution drives the last nail in the coffin. The situation has now become simplified. There is no longer any pretense to co-raciality in the management and control of grand oil of the nation, forgotten all of its ancient traditions.
A lily-white may be defined as a Republican, North or South, who does not believe that the Negro has any political rights which a white man in bound to respect, if they run counter to his determination to dominate the equation. There is probably only one member in either house of congress who has the right of hearts—and that is the black one. The Negro politician is slow of mind and hesitant of heart to discern and sense the signs of the time. They are riding a dead horse and endeavor to prod him on with sharp spurs.
The Negro is restricted to Haitian's choice. Mr. Howe is the ablest and most efficient statement in eicher party with a social program which means much to the nation, but to the Negro because he needs it most.
The lines were definitely laid during the last campaign. No word was used to describe the spiller binders about the rights of the Negro bated upon the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments. The Republican party is in constant jeopardy by insurgent threats from the North. The newly awakening industrial South with its native white population offers new fields to offset the threatened loss in the East and West. But the North is not the only that is the Negro must be eliminated as a contentious element in political affairs. The Republican party is willing to pay the price. Moral constituency weighs but feely against political

KNOW TEXAS
To help cultivate keep their hairs and trees green and beautiful the farmers use a number of summer water rate of less than half the regular rate for excess water used in that purpose. Texas has all the states in its total crop values with an average annual production of $800,000,000. Texas has more land in cultivation than any other state and has more good new land available for future cultivation than any other state for cultivation from 40 to 45 million bushels.
Ousear DPriest stands out as the antithesis of this lily-wilde propaganda. And yet, on deeper analysis, he is emphasizing and strengthening it. He demands Negro control of Negro constituencies, whose logical counterpart is white control of white constituencies. He is a radical. He is crucial. He is crucial in his logical conclusion.

"Before my baby was born I was weak and sick. My friends told me by Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and I also read about it in the newspaper. I gave it a trial and found that it strengthened me, so now I recommend it to other mothers. If any woman who is interested will write to me I shall be glad to tell her more about Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound."—Mrs. Elain Dillen, 1423 Hong St., Toledo, Ohio.
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
Two lines of the old ode that she loved on them led into the next line, a hugging noon in the street. She hugged, then hugged, then hugged in the street. She hugged. Suddenly the time stopped and I was able to take her before service. She presented of satisfaction overpaced her features as the three Wentworths appeared decoyward toward the Wentworths kitchen Mamu Netta was watching her dishes and preparing her meal, slightly cracked osmana. She reached for her bone note and held it with an open window there entered the mollusk man with it in reconstant chord pliures while she held her note to the window and looked out. Mamu was seated immediately to the older woman's gaze with an expression she could not tell. She came nobody else but he whispered to some nobody else but he tell me
Maum Nettai listened for a moment. No Kogri can regain harmony, but beauty is common around all ages. She danced with a stone dropped almost into the barber's chair, and true. She commenced to sway slowly from side to side. Nettai tried the harmony with one hand but the other unlocked Bodgates, for the spiritual journey returned on tiptoe to her dress. Her bird of prey was in that strange community that comes from merging two sparrows and beautiful common offering. The bird pardived pardived rocked to the enchantment of its creators. In the dining room the little mahogany clock on the table was on toward onward. Church was also and Mrs. Wentworth looked the little brick house chalking with several neighbors. "I did not know there was a Kogri marked. Why, that singing seems so beautiful." And Sunday, too, contributed a and a chronically shocked voice.
Mamna Neta sat just inside of the room with her turbanned head nodded of the side, and the door stood open. The door swaited and paithed with Mamba swaiting and paithed with the whole being into the music. But the door had not been opened. Before her on the mamba swaited all of the things possessed by the family. The last just being given a final polish, she said to speak a second time before she could re-enter the kitchen, and the slow gathering together of the people, like people walking from a daze, entered the dining room, closing the door behind her, and gave her a kiss.
With the success of the shootout, Mrs. Wentworth had a definite objective. As a matter of fact, Mrs. Wentworth was predicated for failure in such a situation than her weakness, and where such weakness was the Bama, born of a race that owed its very existence to its understaff, just how vulnerable those virtues are to her attack against them and her time. Her position was now a favour ahead of her victim, leaving a favour ahead of her victim, leaving a favour obligation. The Wentworth had no money wherewith to compensate for her failure, and must be given food in the kitchen

Careful Analysis of the Recent Changes and Tendencies in the Manhattan Population Indicates that Black Folk May Control the World's Richest Metropolis
Will colored people control Manhattan Island within the lifetime of men now in middle age? Will this most noted borough of New York City find itself overwhelmingly populated by Negroes and politically controlled by them? Will capable black politicians of 1940 'admirer the affairs of this famous island?
In point of wealth and population, New York is the greatest State in the United States, though only 30th in size. New York City, at its southern extremity, has the greatest population and wealth of any city in the entire world. Most of the wealth of New York state is concentrated in New York City, from which comes at east one-fourth of all the national revenue. This city alone is twice as rich as Australia and four times as rich as South Africa or Hungary, and the richest section of New York City is Manhattan Island, a borough of the metropolis, 16 miles long, about a mile or so in width and 21.38 square miles in area.
Here modern civilization has reached its greatest height in wealth, culture, refinement, art, architecture, commerce and knowledge. Here are buildings by the score that shoot hundreds of feet into the air; railroads that run for miles under the ground; tubes that hurl mail underground with the speed of an airplane, and a thousand other wonders of modern civilization. Will Negroes one day rule this Borough? Or first throuth, but upon examination it is readily seen to be a serious possibility.
Negro Population Increasing
In 1920 the total population of Manhattan island was 2,284,103 people, 101,133 New Yorkers, and 1926 the population showed little more than a total of 1,800,000 and today, in 1929, there are liberally estimated to be over 200,000 people. This number it is also necessary to add thousands of Spanish-speaking Porto Ricans, Cubans and many other similarly considered when Negroes are being discussed, are nevertheless certainly not white people in the American meaning of the word. The total population of the island is decreasing while the colored population is increasing about one-fourth as rapidly. If this trend continues to see the Negroes numerically dominant in the borough. When that time arrives the result will certainly be the population President, aldermen and the

Business Structures Replace Homes
Is this a wild dream? The facts do not indicate such. Manhattan Island is rapidly filling up with huge skyscrapers devoted to business enterprises of all kinds. More and more they are encreaching on the residential areas of the borough. Whereas most office buildings were not a few years ago below 34th street, they have now filled a large

part of the area between that thoroughfare and 59th street (Central Park). Quite naturally the value of residential property has increased. This has been followed by increased taxation, which has raised the rents so high that persons of moderate means have had to get out.
Manhattan Lost Over Half Million People
By this method Manhattan has lost over a half million people in the nine years since the 1960s. The great colonies of Jews, Irish,
italiens and Germans, there are now business structures, where no one lives except an occasional jantor's family. Every day old tenements are being torn down to make way for more skyscrapers, widened streets, tunnel entrances and bridgeheads.
Also with the tremendous growth of the business area has come scores of new hotels to accommodate the 100,000 visitors who enter Manhattan daily, and dozens of palatial skyscraper apartment houses for the seasonal occupancy of the ultra-rich, who have very small families as a rule. Then, too, at least a score of new theatres have been erected in the borough in the past decade, thus displacing twice as many residences.
Whites Abandoning Island
The hundreds of thousands of whites, who are being forced off Manhattan island, do not leave New York City. They are staying in room there. While Manhattan Borough has only an area

of 21.93 square miles, the boroughs of Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Richmond have respective areas of 41.7,77.6,129.5 and 55.2 square miles. A million people live in the Bronx, the same number in Queens, over two million in Brooklyn, and over a quarter million in Richmond (Staten Island). So there is plenty of room in New York City for those forced out of Manhattan by the orchard of business. This explains why the population of Manhattan Borough is decreasing, while that of the city of New York is increasing.
Negroes Pushing Whites From Manhattan
There is another reason for the flight of large numbers of whites from Manhattan: The Negroes. Since the Great War the migration of black Americans was been very steady. Invariably they have made their homes on Manhattan Island, and wherever they have moved the whites have either been forced to move or have left gladly of their own volition. The blacks have either i.e. moved north into the Bronx or into Queens. Brook

in the harbor of Brooklyn.
In the meantime, the white population of the island is growing by nearly a half million in the five years from 1920 to 1925,
how many will be left on the island by 1940? Certainly
the population of Manhattan continues.
Today the total population of Manhattan Borough must be close to
the numbering 200,000, constituting one-eighth of the total.
Negroes to Rule by 1940
By 1935, at this rate, the total population of the island will be much less than a milion, and the gross residence there has grown to 500,000 by that year, colored people will control Manhattan politically, and by 1945 they will be beyond question. Then only rich whites, few in number, will be able to reside south of 110th street, while the colorless people of that north of that thoroughfare.
Thus it is certainly not far-fetched that Manhattan will be governed by a Negro burglar, and by Negro aldermen largely, policed by black patrolmen by black firemen and watchmen.
Free Negroes in 1791
Are Negroes deserving of such a trust? It would seem so. There were free Negroes on Manhattan Island in 1643. While slavery was inaugurated in 1660 these introduction was prohibited in 1782, gradual emancipation began in 1799, and all of the enslaved Negroes were freed by 1827. The number of slaves began to decrease after two slave importations in colonial days: one in 1712 and the other in 1741, both ruthlessly suppressed with hangings and burnings of the culprits. George Washington Supped at Negro Tavern
It is interesting to note that in 1847 the Negroes on the island had $83,900 invested in real estate. Today, eighty years later, the value of their holdings exceed $50,000,000. There have been many Negroes of wealthier origin. From 1789wards there were many famous caterers among the Negroes on the island, serving the finest families there. The Negroes were also famous for Cornelia Gomez, "Aust" Katie Ferguson, Peter Van Dyke, Boston Crumml (father of Bishop Alexander Crumml), Thomas Downing and David Kowalski. During a great fire in New York in the early days of the 19th century, Thomas Downing saved the city from coming under attack, and putting his whole supply of vinegar to melt the ice in the wells and reservoirs, from which the water supply was obtained. When he George Washington and Manhattan to take command of the Continental Army at Cambridge, Mass., and again when he was en route to his hometown, he joined the Revolutionary War, he stopped at France's Tavern at the lower end of Manhattan, then operated by a Negro citizen. The old place still stands restored at 54 Pearl

At the time the Federal Constitution was adopted in 1791, all free Negroes in the State could vote. Negroes have always played an important part in the history of Manhattan island. They fought valiantly during the Revolutionary War and distinguished themselves at the Battle of Lake Erie.
Negroes Deserve to Rule
Thousands of them went South and died to make their brethren free during the Civil War, and to teach them after that. They were with the U.S. Army during the war with Spain in 1898. During the World War, the 15th New York Infantry, composed largely of Negroes from Manila, fought a firing line longer than any other American regiment in France, won the greatest number of decorations and clichés in the war, strength making the world safe for democracy and was the first American regiment to cross the Rhine into German territory after the

Nezro Political Power
So, no group has better right than the Negroes to rule Manhattan Island, and certainly the possibility of them there to moll and are becoming more and more of a political power, what with representation already in the city council and the State's the most populous and are becoming restriction of European immigration, Negroes are continuing to flock to Manhattan because it is the most liberal city in the continent for colored folk in all America under the Stars and Stripes.
If the whites continue to move out as they have been the only group to contest the political supremacy of the Negroes. Black folk will never be sufficiently powerful numerically to control Charlotte New York, but on Manhattan Island, the wealthiest, most up-to-date, most pictureque and most stimulating part of the world's greatest city, Negroes to rule in the next ten years.

The Black King, who, in the Struggle between Rome and Carthage, held the Balance that Decided the Mastery of the World
By J. A. Rogers
PERHAPS no character in history stands out in more interesting relief king of Massinisa. king of Numidia.
Certainly none furnishes more splendid examples of doing justice to consummate skill than he. Coming on the scene at a time when two great nations were struggling for the mastery of the world, he three his weight on the ground. There was nothing extraordinary in that, it may be stated. But at the time, Massinisa was a fugitive—hunted and tracked by his enemies. He had less than six followers.
A Great Love.
And all for the love of a woman. No love story is more touching than that of Masminisa's. Let us glance at the leading figure in this mighty drama. They are: Hannibal, the Carthaginian, said to be the greatest military genius of all time, and himself an African. Scipio, foremost Roman general of his day, a man of his culture, cultured, ruled by his head. Syphax, king of Numidia, the king-pin of the situation. Both Rome and Carthage had done their best to win his favor. Syphax had used all his grace and tact on Syphax who had secured him as an ally.
Most Beautiful Woman.
Sophonisa, most beautiful woman of her time, the daughter of Hasdrubal, Carthaginian general, and niece of Massinissa, son of Gala. King of Massylla, a petty kingdom in southern Numidia. The Numidians were a people of mixed Berber and Ethiopian ancestry. The Berber and Ethiopian were Asiatic race. Earlier in history the empire of Ethiopia extended over all that region. The Numidian cavalry was the great force of the Carthaginians. Commanded by Metinus, the mulatto, they nearly took Sicily from the Romans.
Falls in Love.
As a lad, Massinissa had come to Carthage to study. While there he fell in love with the king of Carthage, drubral, taking a fancy to the comely and accomplished man, had consented to the match, "even though he was a fool," he said. A giant in size and strength, none could equal Massinissa on horseback or with the sword. At the labyrinth, he studied Greek and military tactics.
Gloried in War.
At 17, inflamed by his love for Sophonisba and eager to do something to prove it, he induced his father to declare war against Rome; and gathering an army, Massinissa marched against Syphax him in two great battles. This done, he went off to join the Carthaginian forces in Spain. At that time Carthage had the upper hand, and Hannibal was winning the battle for far from the walls of Rome.
18-Year-Old Prodigy.
Arriving in Spain, Massinissa, not yet 18, attacked Scipio, Romain's foremost leader, and other Rohan general, Gneus, sent against him, met the same fate. With his black cavalry, Massinissa seemed invincible. While this gallant young knight was endeavoring to prove to his lady that he was worthy of her, something else was happening in her mind: anxious to win over Syphax, had offered him the prize he always coveted: the beautiful Sophonisba. Against her will, Sophonisba yielded. She was heard that his fiancées had been married to Syphax he hastened to the tent of Hudrabul. The latter, hearing of the murder, grieved at the injury dom his
brilliant young friend, but would take no steps to redress it. Forced to choose between his private feelings and what he felt was the public good, Hadrudral decided for Syphax.
That decision was to mean the doom of Carthage. The doormenians could not have tainted the more unlucky. They had not reckoned with Massinissa.
Deserts Cartharians
Hot with anger, Mamasinis quit, and he went to his native land. Before leaving Spain, he sleets into Sippe's camp, where he was killed. On the way he Sippe sent men to the army, and finally arrived in Maysil, in the meantime, his father had died; and welcomed by the people, he was now Sippe. 'Now Syphax, for revenge for Sippe, he sent men to him in battle after battle. Humely wounded in the passage of a car, he fell into two companions in a cave. To cannibal, he gave out that he was
Loses in Love and in War
But undiscouraged, he gathered another army and again he was beatless. But he was still determined war did he seem to have any success against this great enemy. But he was not alone. Sippe lingered on the African coast with an army, and with great determination he led to him and offered to become his captain. With him were only five followers. But Madinat, as he was, alone on the African coast had already felt the force of his army.
Marches with Seiple
Ralying his people once more, he matched with Scopio to attack the army commanded by "Hadhradul Musa" and "Hadhradul Scipio" and Musa had to rely on strategy. They began by a prolapse Noting that the Nunidian camp was one night. The N Numidian was not knowing that the Nunidian camp had been set fire to the armies behind it. The Romans in the Carthaginian camp, the saints had seen the flames and the creed, made the same error, created the same error, and caused the same error to the cries of the wounded and the dying they thought those also were a saint stealing into the Carthaginian camp. Carthaginian Camp Destroyed Carthaginian Camp and beast were into a panic and fell either into the fire on the sword or the enemy were killed and wounded; 1000 Nunidian horses were captured; 1000 Nunidian men were captured and Syphax, utterly ridden, fled to Bali. Ralying, Hadhradul and Syphax prepared for another battle. The disastrous battle by fire; not by battle. One is in
Syphax Routed
Once more the four leaders met in battle. This time Massima arrangement, he would oppose it to Syphax; to dooble by his first victory, swept his enemy before him. In vain Massima's army hoping to impress Massima's army hoping to impress and Massima, catching up with and made him prisoner. The beaten army had taken refuge in an anissa pinned on there. Was it the fugitives he sought? No; there was no chance that all his victories—Syphaxian and her—had been lost but her—long four years of tortured waiting that had but served to increase With massima the Roman general, Lelius. He decided it to attack anissa, and pany him. Skillfully he used argument, the pushed ahead.
Finds Sonhonisha
Arriving before the walls of the city, the citizens their king loaded, with chains. Quickly they surrendered, and the king his one and twenty years, disbanded through the gates. Once made in stone, he was taken to the city, past the palace gates, and there. Sophonisa in the full bloom of her beautiful maness went to meet her horse. Massinilla went to meet her horse. She came to meet him and threw herself at his feet began to paddle with him not in give her a courteous, and thy fortune, she said, but if it is permitted to a captive and if it is permitted to a captive and of a conqueror, I pray ye, she, the royal majesty with which we are bound, to not hand me over to the capricion of some cruel Roman. Dispose of me
Overcome by Love
But Massinella, overcome by her love, beamed at her. "I love better to depend on a Numidian than a Roman. prefer those born like I under a Roman, rather than a Roman." He led her into the palace, and embracing her, assured her she still loved her. "She was in the way with his soldiers, and not far behind him There was but one way, it was a bold and foolhardy way, but she could not be married her at once. As Massinella's wife, she could not be treated as a slave."

lay he had the ceremony performed.
When Lelen arrived and heard his mother crying, she angered that he wished to match Bohan's dress and send her off with the other captive, but Massinella was too powerful to be offended then, so she agreed to help him until Script came. He arrived and, as fate had it, he saw Syrah Godfrey.
Fate Intervenes
New Sybira was crafty. He knew that Masmina had taken his wife and he would rather see her dead. He recalled that Masmina recalled his past fortunes, and wishing to know why he had reflected the Roman alliance and fought against them. "Yes, I have committed a great fault, an sft of collar for which I moment I took arms against the moment I took arms against the moment of my folly.
Syphaz Fleadu
"My ruin began when I fell in love with her. She stands and she is passionately devoted to her country, and though I don't stand her and she is passionately devoted to her country, and though I don't stand her and she is passionately devoted to her country, it was my love for her that preoccupated me. He added: "Now I am ruined, but I am still trying to see her pass into the hands of my enemy, Masmusha. He has been in my life, and I have been in his fielder yet. Has he not in marrying her shown a blinder passion for Seleno who had been included in the saw the thing in a different light. Why, indeed, the sudden marriage of Seleno and I was consulting Lelah." Why this exigency to marry a captive? Surely I have seen her in a different light, said. Stephie and Mamunah again fought together. This time they had to contend with the enemy, who, quitting Europe, had returned to Africa. Mamunah had tried to rescue the man, but he had remained faithful to Rome. He two faced me at Zama on two occasions. The Carthaginians, as was said, nailed the man in occupying the hills, the trees, the fields. But soon they saw their error, for Buton they saw their error, for they sized them. Finally, after eating their homes and even the leather of the saddle, they surrendered after promising to pay a heavy annual tribute to have another effect. The Romans to have another effect was to have declared war on an ally, despoiled on the weakened republic.
Sophonisba Avenged
Thus was Sophoniba avenged, but Mastinissa did not live to see it. He few days earlier, aged nearly ninety, gave a few days earlier, aged nearly ninety, Livvy, Polibya, Appian, Justin and all the historians of the period speak in highest terms of him. Polibya was a woman: "Mastinissa was the greatest and the happiest sovereign of our speech, the greatest and the longest years in perfect health and died at the age of ninety.
Marellous Physical Specimen
"Practically he was the strongest and the greatest of all men. Time were it necessary to stand, he could keep on his feet for days at a time; as to remaining on for days and nights at a stretch.
"Thanks to the harmony that reigned in his family, his kingdom was never troubled by intrigue or great mischief. The greatest merit, his most admirable work: before him, Numidia was wild, uncultivated, and all to culture. He could produce all kinds of fruit like any other country. He has, therefore, most of his memory honored. A short time before his death, his memory was honored. The day after the Carthanians. The day after the tent eater whole wheat bread
Changed History
But for Masmina, in the world as now written would have been different. One fact is that she was a member of the republic, which had been a force for seven hundred years, took world supremacy from Africa and gave it to the world.
Memory Honored by D'Annunzio
Massinissa left a nephew, Jugurta
who was hardly less famous than he
