THE HOUSTON INFORMER
BISHOP VERNON DENIES REPORT ABOUT COMBINE
Little Rock, Ark.—(ANP) —Shorter College will not be a party to the proposed merger of Shorter College, Arkansas Baptist College, and Phi ander Smith College, declared Bishop W. T. Vernon to the representative of the Associated Negro Press, here Tuesday morning.
Discussing the projected merger, which has gained wide publicity following the announcement of the plan, the bishop said:
"I would not attempt anything so revolutionary as amounting to the merger of the institution and the approval of the general conference, the higher education of the schools that the most cordial relationships between the schools mentioned to contain the merger of Arkansas might benefit from the cooperative efforts of the schools in the efforts to give them the best education."
In "this day when Negro youths are attending and graduating from college, the child of the humblest cotton picker deserves the same chance as the child of the humblest cotton picker of our group. This is the purpose of Shorter College, and we are working to cultivate the student in view. The answer in which Negro have rallied to the cause of the Negro community is in hearty sympathy with our project."
Raising Money For Improvement
That the bishop was right in his statement is indicated by the theatrical for improvement of the college and the employing of the best trained men in the college in May and since that time seven more thousand have been contributed to the college and a program of education has been prosecuted. Tyrone Hall, a new dormitory of last year, has been remodelled and improved. The students are improved. One of the strongest faculties in the history of the school of the college folk have cooperated in the record-breaking number of students. Churchmen, laymen and just ordinary folk have cooperated in the working together to raise the money necessary to make Sharter College the best college in the country.
BISHOP EFFORT FOR FUNDS NETS NEARLY $3,000
Marshall, Texas—Even though in its early stages, the 30-day "better day" expects to secure $5,000 by November 1 for the renovation of buildings and improvement of the campus of the institution. He expects to drive a highway. Every element of doubt as to the renovation of the wall was relayed Friday evening by a body assembled in the college chapel under the bridge, a pillar, and the college orchestra subscribed $1,278.50 to the movement; and pledged 100%. The college faculty and previously subscribed $1,100, same as the college faculty and subscribed hundreds of letters and subscription cards have been mailed from the campus to each student asking their friends for $1 each and in some instances, $1 for each member of the faculty and the response

The charging of the police with the killing immediately drew fire of Deputy Commissioner of Police Steppe Sirotin. Alarmed, the deputy aloud. "Not one shred of evidence was obtained at any previous inquiries to do with it, and it is impossible to believe the killing," said the deputy commissioner. "Carroll had absolutely nothing to do with it, and it is impossible to believe with it." The deputy commissioner of Steppe was also that of Brussels, who declared that in his investigation he had found no evidence that the police did the shoot. The police officer, the attorney Leech is contending that police are connected with the murder and has expressed his determination to see the grand jury. School To Be Moved Because of Whites' Deeds of Violence
Memphis, Tenn.—(ANP) The Indiana Industrial School will perhaps be moved to Mount Bayon, Mississippi, on account of the "continued and increased" demand for the Indiana, an institution on an account recently by Dr. R. W. Patton of the American Church Institute, which is one of the sponsors of the school. The suspension of Nerges to violence which was climaxed by the shooting of Charles Gilman, prominent Negro merchant and member of the school, has reduced the scholastic population about one-third, declared the school to be the place of shipment upon the school and the removal of the transfer of the institution will mean a loss of more than $35,000 to the school, which was expended annually by the faculty and students of the school and the school itself, for supply and other

Windy City Negro Made Member Of Public Library Body
Chicago, Ill.—(ANP)—Joseph D. Bibb, editor of the Chicago Whip, and prominent local attorney, was duly sworn in as a member of the board of directors of the Chicago Public Library, here Thursday morning.
Mr. Bibb's name was presented to the city council Wednesday by Mayor William Hale Thompson and was unanimously approved by the body. This marks the second time in the history of Chicago that a Negro has been appointed to the board of directors of Chicago Public Library. The first to be named war Dr. George Cleveland Hall, who was appointed by Mayor Dever and who served as a member until Mr. Bibb's appointment. This position is second in importance only to the board of education, on which no Negro has served in spite of campaign promises of mayoralty candidates for the past several years.
The Chicago Public Library, with several years, as editor of the Chicago various branches, holds an important place in the lives of Chicagoans. In the battles of the group at the park time it is waging a campaign to succeed in securing a Southside branch, and also placed several memorials of our group in important positions.
Chicagoans are praising the selection of Editor Bibb. In him they feel the indignation of Chicagoans opposing the on board who will follow the precedent set by his presidents. The carey of the civil service commissioner for the Group For

Mississippi Court Gives Novel Ruling
Jackson, Miss.—(ANP)—Suggesting that Jack Byrd was not given a fair trial in Simpson County on a charge of murdering Bibo Cox, a white man, the supreme court today ordered him discharged from a sentence of life imprisonment. This record and of every detail of it, we cannot escape the conclusion that if this man killed a white man or a Negro he killed a Negro, there would never have been a written by Judge Virgil A. NOVEL GEORGIA LAW IS AGAINST COLORED GROUP
By JESSE O. THOMAS
(For the Associated Negro Press)
Atlanta, Ga. — The recent legislature of the state of Georgia passed a motor carriers act which brought about new regulations on the rights of employers or property or both for hire or compensation over the public highways of the state of Georgia. The Public Service Commission. The legislature did not formulate rules and regulations covering the operation of the Public Service Commission discretionary powers to outline and designate the duties of those passengers and property transporting vehicles might operate. There are thirty- three of these rules and regulations.
On the face of it and according to the language of this rule it seems at a distance to be able to own or colored. If the ability to own and operate buses and the amount of business done would be equal, the groups in the matter of daily transportation one group would be at be more invested in the business of bus transportation would be assured of doing business equally, as his neighbor on the other

A few months ago an ordinance passed the legislature at Jacksonville. BECK ADVOCATES Harlem Political RETURN OF G. O. P. Leader Sent To Pen TO PARTY TENETS For Crooked Deeds
Sugar Tariff May Affect Next Preserving Season
Editor Houston Informer:
It is obvious that President Hoover and those who would have him nominated to be president deep to accomplish this end. Party leaders from 38 states only a few weeks met in *Washington* and elected Clinton Houston chairman of the under press of Mr. Hoover and whose duty is to renew, if he can, all objections to the nomination in 1952. Just before the Republican party will vote in my opinion, depend upon the constructive and helpful legislation that has been enacted over with respect to tariffs, many building, prohibition enforcement and legislation. Because it is thought that this or that diminished from being a candidate of his age, the Republican party in the House is expected to take a suitable candidate when the Republican Convention meets to pick a suitable candidate.
This fact more than anything else will mitigate in favor of and greatly enhance the possibilities of Herbert J. Sullivan's own personal wish and hope is that he will represent the man who more aggressively in all the states and will in 1925 select a candidate that will brush off thoughts or dreams of trying to build a Republican party in Southern states at the sacrifices of party principles; by making and selling religious institutions or pie to new so-called converties by bidding and selling religious institutions in American tendencies and practices. New York City — (ANP) - Federal Judge Ervin, sitting in the district court in this city Thursday, sentenced James L. P. Rumble to a term of four years in the federal penitentiary for conspiring to sell insurance stock under false pretenses at 8 West 40th Street. Rumble, formerly prominently identified with politics in Harlem, is a second officer, having served a term in Sing Sting for similar fraud in conjunction with the merger of "bargaining" six or five years ago. Immediately on his release from Sing Sting, Mr. Rumble returned to New York and with several white men in a sweater "hat of prospective clients, robbed a number of people in Harlem who were formerly investors with Rumble were by his latest venture and when it fell under suspicion of the United States fraud was ordered. Coming at the time of the spectacular bank failures, and other stock bureses, Rumble was many dominated by the Italian group; the Clarke Brothers private bank, and other stock bureses. Rumble removed one of the "cluster" houses out of operation, leaving the field
with cooperated greed, monopoly, official corruption and malfeasance in office are issuing the life out of the taxpayer's pockets. I am firm in the opinion that if the Republican party desires to reduce the cost of government of the American people, it must find a way to reduce the cost of government of the American people, it must find opportunities to meet the sharp demand caused by the World's War. The cost of the World's War was war precipitated by Germany, can not be estimated. The World's War was a common terrorism of all people or nations that were forced to take part in it and while wide economic benefits will not, from my viewpoint, allow the allied nations to impose or assess a fine against them to want to and want to crime. The American protection through the agency of the protection should build a navy not to fight France, Germany, Japan or any other nation from fighting America and denying American ships in time of war, from seven seas, carrying our commodities of food and trade to all people of the global remote parts of the habitable globe.
The congress or the Republican party, or a president who will conceive for the party and in fit to guard the best interests of the Union, and in not fit to represent the American people, is what the American people think about the American people. A woman like Mrs. McCormick, congresswoman at-large from the state of Pennsylvania, leads our party and conserves the best interests of the people. Time will tell, and we shall be at the Republican National Convention in 1932.

Harlem Seething With Discontent Over Play Titles
New York — (ANP) — A strong underecent prescribing use of the word "Niggers" in so many Broadway shows will long end it will spring to the surface in full force. With the current prescribing of "niggers" nothing to do with colored people nor has it any colored actors in the play, but the thinking class of Harlem, fuel is added to the smoothering fires with the all colored production, is being cast. Chippeau Gardner, well-known in the world, is the director of the "Harlem" cast, is advertised as publicity man for this production and is the subject of the circulation regardless of the flattering offer made him is a matter of surprise. The question that Gardner should be associated with productions which seem to be an unfair side of N葛 lifo.
It is believed that this constant motion of the cast of the failure of "Gad Home" one of the strongest dramas presented on Broadway, follows the same pattern as the married French woman. It was instrumental in the descent of "Harriet Guild," it is estimated that had no Guild attended, the production is subdivided by the "Theater Guild." It is estimated that had no Guild attended the production, "Porgy" it would have run eight weeks on the Martin Guild reason, it caught hold and the public is still locking down to the Martin Guild row in Catfish Row in Charleston, S. AMERICA'S GREATEST WEEKLY NEWSPAPER
New York—(ANP)—Colored leadership in Harlem looms moors and more favorably every day with the college, the university, the college faction over the Greenland-Harlem organization in the 19th District. It is in foregone conclusion that Collegiate Union will district at the next election Tuesday, and the College Union will see the handwriting in Robert Conklin in his district, the 21st, where Charles Holt, the college, the colored district's leader, holds a sword of Democles over Conklin.
There was a reported "gentlemen's agreement" to cover the cellulose shell over the division of the district when Conklin faced the inevitable to the college, the colored section, leaving the division to Conklin. But now the constitution is own success at the polls, is demand. Conklin will declare and will they eye on the leadership as have several college leaders who will violate his private understanding with Conklin to be seen.
Growers and exporters of Texas and Louisiana have organized a big college association with the college quarter, the L.A., and have filed declaration of purpose to grow rice, rice products and rice by-products.

You may feel at times like Jack does in this letter, and so you may be interested in what I found on show, back, by studying this book writing. This you know. If you have been reading this section every week, is a perfect register of the talents you have been creating, creator, and capable of making a success in law, or in the school room or pulpit. It shows in your writing. If you are the right kind of person for a name, or are gifted

Jack Browne, one of our readers, sent in the question. Jack says that we don't need to say he wasn't any good. Jack did not get his lessons. Jack admits it. I hate sitting still, and I guess I'm just a failure."

Fewen-five years ago, these couples would have been dressed very differently. Doubtless, this was because the rough and tumble of jazz entertainment did not require freedom of movement as does modern jazz—especially the jazz found in modern cabarets. You will notice also that the younger couples are well dressed and respectable looking people.

Wentworth were sitting very erect in the Chinese Chippendale chairs at George J. Atkinson was doing the task.
"Jimmy," she imagined, "he was sasy, Mr. Raymond tell me that you take in fancy sewing. I must remember that when I have come work to me let me ask you to help me mark my knee on the telephone. Yes, in a moment the telephone. Yes, in a moment the telephone. Very neat! You for calling. Very neat!"
In the street Mr. Wentworth said: "well that's done. Let it forget. If you want to remember and forget if you want to, but the day following the Atkinson the three Wentworth were together and been discussing the matter, and then the morning of other people, she was kind. For me they do not exist. For one of her many wonders, "Well, she gave me a chair and stared at the kitchen room watching them. "If you want to see Maua Neta she will be in the Negress. "Close the door, the Negress."
But the woman advanced toward the little group and stood looking down at me one who has a thrilling and interesting personality. She was of medium height and was dressed in a dark, eminent, almost assertive impacacity. Her dress was covered by a waist wrap, white starched cap with a wide brim, white sleeves, most salient characteristics were a large nose, a large mouth, lips and a squareness about the lower face that gave it an expression of confidence. Profound smile she stood surveying me, her eyes wide and liberately she smiled, revealing a double row of big masculine teeth. Her expression of conviction broke the silence: "Well, I am not a woman."
The visitor bent double in a paroxym of silent hush. He entered the room. Polly came immediately to the point. Where in the world did you hear her?
When Mamah spoke, her voice was so powerful that thought her speech out with care, she was able to speak without hesitation. She was desperate in urgency. The yeaas of painter were over, and she was not much, but she had been careful to keep her composure during the panicked tasks about this day. The teacher did no talk about it. What real estate she knew and they knew. Now for the real estate she knew and they knew.
The old woman leaned forward and looked into her face.

HE Chevalier Iza Frederick Aldridge, Negro America's most illustrious son, was born in the opening year of the nineteenth century, probably in 1810.
Like many another great man who rose from humble surroundings and left no autobiography, his early life is clouded in conjecture.
There are two stories. One is that he was born in New York City, the son of an African prince and a colored American woman. Th i s prince, it is said, was the sole survivor of a revolt, in which the king, his father, together with his family, had been massacred. Rescued by missionaries the prince was taken to America and trained for the ministry, becoming a successful and well-known preacher.
With the aid of the missionaries, the prince sent Tra to be educated for the ministry at Glasgow University, where he played the stage, he left the church.
The second, the more romantic, and yet more likely story, is that he was born of humble parents at Baltimore or probably New York City.
Taught by German
In his youth he was apprenticed to a German ship-carpenter, thus reminding one of another great Negro who also lived at that time. He was a teacher, it is said. Aldridge learned German and picked up what education he could.
The Amazing Story of a Negro Stage-Hand to Whom the World's Greatest Monarchs Threw Open their Palace Gates.
But it was in the dark-skinned roles such as Othello that he was best.
From the shipyard he went to Wallack's Theatre, where he filled some menal employment. But here he met many of the most noted actors of the day and was fired by their example to reach that goal which nearly every ambitious actor of the time had set for himself, namely, to be a great interpreter of Shakespeare.
Taken to England.
It was here also, that he met Edmund Kean, one of the greatest of all Shakespeare-

an actors. Kean, it is said, was so struck by the young Ira, that he took him back with him to England in some sort of capacity—as servant or secretary, probably.
As the encyclopedias point out, there is invention somewhere in the story of Aldridge's early life. It is probably that of the prince and king story which may have originated with some enterprising press-agent.

these, the dark Negro who distinguished himself, was given royal origin. If he was light, it was his white ancestry. Another dark American Negro, very much known in both Europe and America and who comes from the humblest environment, was recently spoken of by a leading European newspaper as being of royal African descent, although to the best of our knowledge, there is no foundation whatever for the story.
Life of Thrills
But let us leave these questions of origin and early life aside and come down to that part of Aldridge's life of which there is no doubt. The story of Aldridge's life is full of thrills and inspiration.
Living at the time he die—that's before the Civil War, his life sounds like a fairy tale. Fairy tales happen by magic while in Aldridge's case it was the magic of work—hard, gnerving, nerve-tight. Shakespeare said: "Some men are born great; some achieve greatness; while others have greatness thrust into their lives. Shakespeare all three were, in a measure, great."
Possessed Great Intellect
Aldridge's first appearance was as an amateur in Sheridan's "Pearson," where he played the role of Rolla. He also played in minor剧院 with success, and returned to America in 1830. But the proposed American tour failure, and he returned to England.
It was a bitter blow for him but years of disappointment and almost deparal were ahead of him. He had set his heart on playing Obelic and during this period he tried managering the orchestra, studying hard in the meanwhile, mastering the minutest details of the
Made Remarkable Debut
He made his last opportunity arrived. He made his debut at the Royal Theatre in London, where he sat at once stamped up as a Shake-pecker actor of the first rank. The theatre, he said, was praised, and then onwards he was given a graduation so ined in on him, among them being one from Kaean himself, and another from Knowles, one of the most famous actors.
Acclaimed on Tour
From London he began a tour of the provinces providing lance as he went to Othello. He had mastered other pieces as well. But it was in the play "Aaron in "Titus Andronicus," also cannibal in "The Slave," Narranum, that he was impressed. In Boston he played Othello Kendall. Cocks flocked to see him and so great was his name that the theatrical coming. The press hailed him as "The African Kendall, an as such. Bodkin, it will be recalled, was precedently the greatest actor of the play, he rose by sheer force of genius to a position or first rank under Julius Caesar, and did not disdain to learn from him.
Othello. Greatest Role
Madame Malbran, leading prima
professora at the college, was impressed by his acting that she wrote him: "Never in the course of professional
work was she so powerful and interesting performer, while Lady V. Bachech, herself a time, wrote: "During my profession,

So masterful, so perfect in every detail, he has thought that Shakespeare in creating Othello the majestic Moor — "The noble Moor whom the fullest of Venice called all-in-all to him," he used him as the vax model. Othello, it will be recalled, was the commander-in-chief of the armies of Venice and was at the height of its glory. He was a formidable warrior but with the soul of a child when it came to guile and intrigue. He possessed the physicality. In physics, too, Aldridge fitted the part admirably, be being of commanding height and presence with a courage of great dignity. Into his acting he would put so many times members of the audience would be forced under the tension to rise and sage in which he was most effective in mentions the Death of the beautiful and innocent Dedomena whom he had

At these times he created such paintings in the minds of his audience that some would rise up and punish the gullity judge. [Seok ‘the eames cnet Got sonra Convention of
‘Texas have boen ‘enough to discern the injury Uney are
‘wosaking upon Sle ieacton, the Negro race and social fab-
ic; and, if there is the least semblance of the Ohrist spirit left
among these belligerent churchmen, it is high time that they were
cxamptifying ik
‘For the past two years this convention has been torn asunder
by internal strife anid legal tilts, and instead of raising: and em:
money for the cause of missions and education, most of
we money ia being used to pay fal lawyer foes and court costs.
Ro court decision can bring. peuce among these contending
forces, and any man who essays to serve as leader of the body
cought'to have sense enough to know this patent fact.
Tt was never intended that carnal tribunals would stthe pure-
ly retigious matters, and when any church or denomination dem-
cnmtrates ite inability to selthe amicably ita own internal affairs
that ehurch or denomination is about ready for the discard
While not a religious paper, per se, or official organ of any con-
vention or denomination, ‘The Informer is interested in the eon-
cord, growth and perpetuity of all churches and denominations,
fand our position in the present Baptist fiasco would be the same
it it were any other denominational body.
Hf these so-called Christian brethren were divided on funda-
mental principles, then their continued wrangling could be over-
Tooked at least; but when one considers that they are furming and
fussing over office and its spoils, then their conduct becomes
reproach upen and discredit both to their denomination sad racial
contingent.
Really, n't it rather inconsistent for these Baptist ministers to
‘ascend the sacred rostrum on Sundays and discourse on the Prince
‘of Peace, unselfishness, brotherly love and other Christian attri
tutes, when they, themselves, are engaged in a titanic strug of
confusion, hatred, selfishness and by pursuing the latter course
fre doing more 40 advance the cause of his satanie majesty than
‘any rank sinners?
1f these rulgious leaders, both ministerial and lay, are sincere
tm their profeasiany of feith: if they have any regan? tor thelr
church covenant; if they are opposed to serving in the role of
“sounding brass and tinkling cymbals;” if they really desire to
promote and advance the cause of the Lowly Narazene among
the song.af men; if they are willing to obey the great commission
handed down to the church by its Founder; if they believe in the
doctrine of the good shepherd who leads his flock into green pas-
tures and beside stil) waters; if they ‘re in happy consonance
with the sang procizimed by the angelic choir to the shepherds
on the Judean plains, “Peace on carth and goodwill to men”—then
they, will couge Dicksring, unite on some outstanding leader who
can bring order out disarder ‘and peace out of chags, and re-
ttn to the ancient lavimarks of their chureh and denomination.

COMMUNITY CHEST AND NEGROES |= mast Setersto ont tae
With a definite time having been set for the annual drive for
the Community Chest (November 49), some of our people are
advancing the argument that Houston Negroes should not give to
the chest this year because of the Houston Negro Hospital situa.
tion, this local race institution being one of the thirty-three or
‘more welfare agencies supported in part from chest funds.
The Informer can not subscribe to this “cutoff-your-nose-to-
spite-your-face” policy, for the Houston Negro Hospital is bigger
than one person or any clique of persons.
‘This paper realizes and admits that the Houston Negroes have
tucen accorded a raw deal in connection with their attitude to
ward the official management of this eleemosynary institution.
‘This paper is cognizant of the fact that although Houston Ne-
srroes contribute their bit through the Community Chest for the
upkeep of this hospital, along with other welfare organizations
‘and agencies, they have been ignored and insulted by certain hos-
pital functionaries—yet this is neither the time nor ploce to at-
tempt to “strike back" or “et even.”
‘The Community Chest deserves and should have the moral sup-
ort and financial backing of every citizen within the confines of
this community, without regard to color, creed or clase; for In its
ministrations the chest disregards racial and religious lines,
tis the one and only great democraticizing axeney in our com-
‘munity and its influence for good is inestimable.
‘Through the channels of organized charity, it has given a dem-
onstration of practical Christianity which has never been equalled
by any organization in the eity's history.
‘The Houston Negro Hospital is only one of the thirty-odd wel-
fare agencies getting substantial support from chest funds; and,
to oppose the chest effort because of the ho-pital situation, would
be dealing the cause of suffering humanity mean and wicked
Blow below the belt-
However, if the chest direetors want to make a_nice showing
among the Negroes of Houston, they should not wait unt the
last minute to organize the colored forces: but they should get
busy’ at vonee and perfect a colored organization and let these
colored. workers get in on the preliminary gifts campaign, and
otherwise lineup their forees 50 as to make a commendable show-
ing in this community project.
HOUSTON PREPARES FOR TEACHERS:
Houston will be host during next month to the Colored Teach-
ers’ State Association, at which time it is expected that upwards
‘of 2,000 race edueators will spend three days in this city, discuss-
ing and studying problems of their profession, and getting in-
formation trom some of the leading colored and white educators
of the country.
According t President Joseph J- Rhoads of Marshall, a very
‘laborate and comprehensive program has been carded for the
Houston meeting, and teachers will pour into “Heavenly Houston”
in large numbers from all sections of the state during Thanksgiv-
ing. week.
Sis cers cin wl be ee co eh
hhomes and entertainment for these visitors: and, since Houston
{is world-famous for its Southern hospitality and its peerless man-
ner in staging and putting over such events, The Informer has
to fears along this line.
‘Since the association met here in 1920, its numbers have been
augumented considerably and its sessions are largely attended,
and Houston will do well not to underestimate its importance and
increased attendance.
‘The burden of providing entertainment for these visiting teach-
ers should not fall entirely: upon the shoulders of Houston's 390
or more race teachers, but the citizenship generally, particularly
our business and professional men and women, should join their
forces in helping to care for and entertain this annual gathering.
‘Aside from the addresses and papers, some of the best musical
talent in the state will appear on the program, and very little
time will be given to socializing and fraternizing. except after the
daily sessions.
‘These sessions will not only be open to teachers, but to all citi
zens of the community, and those of our race who are interested
in the educational progress and intellectual development of the
Negro, should avail themselves of the opportunity to attend the
sessions and acquire some information which will be both inter-
esting and inspirational.
HOUSTON’S BLACK CRIMINAL ELEMENT
Police and court records disclose the fact that too many Negroes
in this city are committing crimes, and unless this black erimi-
nal element is checked, we are going to be forced to bow our
heads in shame at the appalling crime record of oar group here.
Shooting and cutting scrapes and other offenses against s0-
ciety are daily occurrences here among our people. leading. some
to conclude that the Negro is inherently criminal and lawless.
This is not true, for the law-abiding: and self-respecting Ne-
see outnumber te lawless ad criminal element: bat the deeds
‘f the erimis are ily to ¢ the
SehiteNewapapere while Use multitied Unousands who have never
bowed down to Baal nor worshipped him, are unknown and must
suffer the stigma attached to the race because of the eriminal
acts of a few members of their race.
‘The Negro race should not be judged unjustly and unfairly
by the lowest element within, its race, no more than any_ other
racial group should be appraised by its dregs and criminals,
However, merely to decry and deplore this situation will hard-
ly improve matters, unless we bestir ourselves and do our part
in a well-defined way to reduce this criminal record, and to teach
our people how to obey the law and conduct themselves in a be-
coming and decent manner. |
Much, if not most, of the criminality of the present day can}
be traced directly to the home, where parents do not take enough
time in rearing and training their children along the Tines which
make for good citizenship when these youth attain manhood and
"The home is delegating too many of its responsibilities to out-
side agencies, with the result that we are producing a bumper
crop of eriminals, both youthful and matured. |
‘Those who are entrusted with the leadership of the race should
give this matter serious thought and much study, and a concert
ed effort ought tobe launched here to reduce appreciably the high
criminal record of Houston Negroes, whe are proving themaeves
to be weights around our racial neck and liabilities to society.
‘Here is a fine chance for some missionary work, which, like
charity. should begin at home and then sorend abroad.
