Eminent Leader Dead At Boston; Friend To Negro
Distinguished Lawyer Passes at Ripe Age—Was Only President National Association For Advancement of Colored People Ever Had—Many Attend Funeral—Demise Mourned
New York City—Moorfield Storey, first and only president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, one of the outstanding lawyers of the nation and former president of the American Bar Association, died on the night of October 23, at the age of 85 years.
The funeral took place in Boston and was the occasion for a memorial business conference and of a federal circles of the nation, state and city. The N. A. A. C. P. telegraphed flowers and a message of condolence, and was represented at the funeral by Walter White, acting secretary.
Mr. Storey, during his long and by state or city enactment, and his victorious defense of a human trust, held many positions of public interest. He was an overseeer of Harriet Tubman, the United States Supreme Court, not only as a lawyer, but as a judge of the Law Review, president of the Boston and Massachusetts Bar associations and Massachusetts Civil Service Reform Association.
His championship of the cause of the Negro began in reconstruction of the city of Charleston, where Charles Summer, of whom Mr. Strowve wrote a biography, Mr. Strowve P. and at a time when the cause of the Negro was being given it his powerful power, becoming first president of the Negro, A. A. C. he died. In the last year he will be the dead. The most important legal victories ever in behalf of the Negro in America are due to his efforts. In behalf of the Negro, N. A. A. C. may provide to file a brief with the U. S. Senate father clauses case in 1915, which carried this form of disfiancement. He was acquitted in the repose case in 1917 (Buchanan v. Young), and made a plea for
As president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, he was a key figure in which he has rendered such yeoman service for the cause of right in this country, and which has rendered such credit and distinction from the inception of the movement until his demise. He was the only president the association came from the abolitionist stock of the new England he unified his service in a project whose objective was the establishment of a can Negro; and, while many have unwittingly criticised the work of this organization, none could question the authority of the project which actuated Mr. Stovey in his activities.
He recognized as one of the brightest legal minds of his day and generation and one of the most brilliant lawyers in the country, having gave much of his time and fortune in legal rights to safeguard the civil, political and economic rights of can Negroes and many of the legal victories in behalf of the Negroes of the country he never counseled violence to attain these needs. He believed in the importance of the law, his adjustments and reforms, and tenacity held to the doctrine that the courts of the land would, in the final years of his life, be the rights of all the people of the age of 85 years, he lived much longer than the average man. He saw the black race in human bondage witnessed by his struggles during the period of reconstruction and was granted longevity to assume its rightful place in the life of the nation, but to contribute truthfully to the last of the Mobilists.
No finer character in American history has ever lived than Moorfield, who creditably the last of the Mobilists.
His type has about disappeared from the scene, yet humanity has been blown away. May the cause be renewed. May the cause for which he fought go marching and on and on his life serve

Much concern was manifested over the report that Timothy Reeves, Jr., the chief executive of the company, fessed that he was a "go-between" and had accepted funds from individuals seeking civil service with the assistant state attorney for two hours and the award was issued that he will confess.
Along with Reeves were several of the company's officers who reported, also charged that the high-ranking officers and funders from them for city jobs which were never given were denied. He denied the charge and again stated that he was the victim of a huge frame-up. He further admitted that he was the person that he will be able to prove his innocence.

Kinton, N. C. (ANP) - Citizens of both races are praising Attorney John G. Dawson, white, for the manner in which he defended Willis Moore, 18-year-old Negro youth who faced a 50-year-old white youth of committing 50 burglary.
Attorney Dawson, who is leader of the Democratic forces in this section, was charged with assault and fought for him just as he would have for a wealthy client and an attorney. He was charged with second degree burglary instead of first degree and was sentenced to 28 years in prison, but was acquitted as urged by the state.
He had convicted him to commit more than he could but Attorney Dawson had the confession stricken out of the evidence because it was too much. He was also charged to help Moore "get out of the trouser." So unaltered did this white man, he said, "he is the client many of the crowd who packed the courtroom thought Moore would

RUSTON NEGRO GETS 3 MONTHS SLAYING WHITE
Ruston, La. —(ANP) —After overruling a motion for a new trial in the case of Gus Roberson here in district court Tuesday morning, Judge Stephen D. Pearce sentenced Roberson to three months' imprisonment for the killing of John Kavaughan, white merchant and planner of clay, Jackson Park. Roberson was found guilty of manlaughter by a jury that deliberated less than two hours. In his charge to the jury, Judge Pearce stressed the fact that Roberson, "nego tentan," was shot by law of the land, pointing out particularly that the law that guarantees the individual protection in his home extends to the humble citizen as well. Roberson was shot when he was shot to death when he and four companions went to Roberson's cabin to tend the plants, intensely in search of Joe Wright, tenant on the Kavaughan farm near Clay, who had "jumped" his share

RICE SPEAKER FOR BUSINESS GROUP SUNDAY
Despite the inclement weather prevailing last Sunday, the Houston Business Men's Club held the first of its series of educational meetings at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Ruck, Fifth Ward, in connection with the morning church services. Several members of the organization were present and occupied seats provided for them. Principal address was delivered by John W. Riece, endowment-burial secretary of the Old Women, and the wife of the whole family. Information for business men and the masses. He used several passages from the Bible to explain the short and spicty talk, driving home the fact that Negroes must prepare for the coming of the war to sit around and expect other races to outstil their children for Mack boys. Preceding Mr. Riece's address, a semenette, filled with thought and logic, was preached by Rev. M. Hill, who is the president of the University of Morehouse College and University of Wisconsin. Vice-president of the organization, served as master of ceremonies, A. Hubbard, C. H. McGruder, lawyer of the club and C. H. McGruder, lawyer of the club and C. H. The local business leaders hope that other pastors will follow the fine example of the church leaders to open their main services for these laymen and affect the Negro race. TUSKEGEE BEATS WILBERFORCE, 6-0
Morehouse Bows To Fisk Team
AMERICA'S GREATEST WEEKLY NEWSPAPER
Clark Will Tackle Wilberforce Team
Wilberforce, Ohio.-Saturday, Nov. 2, Wilberforce will meet its second and last at home foe when it meets Clark University of Atlanta, Ga. This will be the first meeting of the green and gold gridders with the Georgia eleven and the Bulldogs are spared to make short work of them.
Clark has had a rather stiff schedule this year and gave a good account of Brad Jacquet in the Tunkegee games, which the boys lost 21-0.
From a comparison of the scores of the Clark-Tunkegee and Tunkegee-Wilberforce games, Wilberforce should be two touchdowns the better but football games don't always run true to form.

Chicago, Ill.—Before a throng of 20,000 fans, Coach Abbott's smooth machine of gridders from Tuskegee downed the Bulldogs of Wilberforce University in a thrilling 6-game, Saturday, October 26. The game was played in Chicago's mammoth Soldiers' Field and before as representative a race assemblage as ever gathered to witness an athletic event, each team gave its best for their alma maters. Both teams were about evenly matched in playing ability, with Wilberforce possibly having the edge but the edge that Tuskegee lacked in playing ability was more than made up for in crattling and tricks of the football trade. In Ben Stevenson Tuskegee has as crafty a football player as ever danced a pigkin, and Stevenson's team was able to carry the ball made them an unbeatable combination. DISSENSION IN PYTHIAN RANKS!
With the grand chancellor of the Ohio jurisdiction of the Color.
‘ea Knights of Pythias, North America, South America, Europe,
‘Asia, Africa and Australi, issuing an edict virtually withdrawing
ifrom the supreme lodge: and with the supreme chancellor of the
‘order suspending the grand lodge of North Carolina, it begins to
appear that the prediction made by ‘The Informer in 1927, when
‘his paper disctised at length the Pythian situation from a na-
tional angle, is about to come true.
In his pronuneiamento, Grand Chancellor Robert B. Barcus, tit
tular head of tho Buckeye State Pythians, balks at the idea of his
Jurisdiction paying any more taxes for the national building proj
ects of the order, setting forth the argument that this eontinued
taxation was calculated to wreck the order in Ohio, as well as in
‘other grand jurisdictions.
Having been able for the past 10 years to collect national
fomple taxes, Mr.-Bareus states in his proclamation that. Ohio
thas made up thé'deficit from grand lodge salaries and mortuary
funda, resulting in the disintegration of the state organization
fand the Joas of 8,000 members and 10 subordinate lodges.
Gioing a bit further, Mr. Barcus says: “The, supreme lodge’s
faxation policy of erecting non-revenue sustaining buildings by
faxing grand and subordinate lodges and their memberships, has
(headed the order for the rocks, and will eventually wreck it, un-
eas Pythians of Ohio assert their rights under its state charter
Go prevent it. ‘The Ohio fraternal laws are ample to safeguard
and to protect every policyholder and property right of every
member within this grand jurisdiction. ‘The grand lodge mem-
Geruhip of Ohio can not bear any more taxation either to build,
‘muaintain, fwrnish, enlarge or improve the national Pythian Tem-
(@e or Sanitarium and Bath House.”
‘The Ohio fraternal leader asserts that the supreme lodge owes
$$1.638,519:25 for bonds, outstanding notes, certificates of indebt-
‘edness and the contractor for the national building: at Chicago;
Ghat taxes are-owed on the Chicago property around the $97,000
«ark, while the Hot Springs property, boasting of a building coat-
dag around $500,000, was sold last’ year for delinquent taxes
‘amounting to $4,063.80.
Disounsing the depleted condition of the supreme lodgt’s treas-
‘azy, Mr. Barcus avers that the reports at the 1929 supreme lodge!
4 Tndianapotis, Indiana, revealed that the total amount on hand
@ of July 1, 1629, was only $7,781.10.
‘To employ the words of the Ohio grand chancellor: “Here we
fare with a trifle over $7,000 in cash oF liquid assets, with debts
and obligations against us of $1,638,519.75. In other words, we
have over a million and a half dollars worth of obligations and
fbaurdens, with oaly about 87,000 with which to lift them; which
means that our rational organization is on the rocks.”
He attributes the sad financial plight of the order to its =
dering building program, particularly as it applies to the nation-
‘af temple in Chicago.
This drastic ation has ven taken by the On Juraetion be
‘cause the recent supreme session enacted a law, levying, for the
fourth time within 10 years, a tax of $1 per member for the Chi-
‘eago project: and Mr. Parcs states emphatically. that. the Ohio
‘rand jurisdiction can not and will not pay this added taxation,
Sthich means Ohio Pythians will not sit in the supreme lodge here-
Following the Barcus ultimatum, comes a proclamation from
§ W. Green, supreme chancellor of the Pythian order, suspending
‘Ge grand juriadiction of North Carolina for failure to pay the
ResSipency: tances duc said supreme lodge” amounting’ to $4,
“GOAGS and interest of F431.11, making a total sum of $5,335.76.

| REPUBLICAN PARTY IN THESOUTH [tear =k Gem He weep woe
Lhe perennial discussion relative to building up a strong Re-
publican party in the South, with the Negro eliminated from the
councils and affairs of the partisan organization, is going the
rounds again; and latest newspaper reports indicate that there
will be a titanic political battle waged between two white factions
seeking to control the partisan situation in Dixie.
In a recent letter to a partisan leader in Florida, President
Hoover warned Southern party leaders that they must desist in
their practice of serving as patronage-mongers, and the president
‘otherwise castigated those Dixie Republican leaders ‘who seem
more concerned in the spoils of office than in maintaining a vigo
rous and robust partisan organization.
‘According to latest newspaper chatter, some of the former
supporters of the chief executive are planning to form an organi
zation of discontented, disgruntled and disaffected white South-
‘erners of all political faiths and partisan persuasions, with a view
‘of dethroning the present regime in the South,
‘This anti-administration bloc has announced that its organiza
tion will be “lily-white,” meaning that no members of the black
race will be identified with the revolt movement.
From our observations, it is apparent that all intra-partisan
‘wrangles in the South, as they relate to the Republican party, are
‘occasioned, more or leas, over this queation of dispensing patro-
[nage and selling federal posts; and, while President Hoover's re
“buke to Dixie partisan leaders, who traffic in government offices,
[was timely and well-irected, it is an age-old practice that we
“Tear even Mr. Hoover and his unofficial patronage committee will
‘not be able to halt or abate.
Whether under white or black leadership, the Republican par-
‘ty can not hope to make much appreciable headway in the South
under existing conditions, and even an official edict from presi
dential sources will not effect a partisan reformation and reene-
ration in Dixie.
‘An attempt to build up any political party with a group of dis-
cordants is certain to meet with failure, and any movement which
essays to construct a partisan organization along color lines like-
wise is doomed to defeat, sooner or later.
__ That the South needs two strong, competiting politi parties,
is self-evident; but how the Republicans ean enter the field aa a
‘major party, measuring arms and holding their own against the
Democrats, remains to be seen.
Instead of drawing’ lines of demarcation, the party leaders
should throw wide their doors to all persons who will subscribe
to the tenets and principles of the party, and no issue of creed,
class or color should enter into the partisan scheme.
‘As far as the Negro is concerned, there is practically no dif-
ference between « Southern Republican and Democrat; for the
Liberals in both political parties are in a hopeless minority, and
do.not posseas the moral courage to oppose the un-American and
undemocratic practices pursued by those in control of partisan
affairs.
‘Whenever the political leaders of the South can become convine-
‘ed that the Negro has no political ambitions and is not desirous
‘of plums and spoils of office, much of the opposition to the biack
‘man participating in polities will disappear; but here is. where
‘the rab lies!
|_ Still steeped in political prejudice, partisan rancor, religious in-
tolerance and racial antipathy, the bourbon South will never em-
brace the Republican party under the existing political conditions
‘and attitudes so prevalent in this section; for a political renais-
‘ance, unlike anything which has ever happened in this country,
‘must take place before the Republican party can hope to make
‘any substantial inroads into the white electorate of the South.
‘While itis true that several Southern states east their electoral
vote for President Hoover in 1928, it was not because these
Southerners were in love with the Republican party or its presi-
dential candidate, but rather because the South could not swal-
low ex-Governor Alfred E. Smith and his Catholic religion.
In other words, it waa not due to the fact that the South loved
the Republican party and its candidate more, but rather becanse
it loved the Democratic party's candidate less.
As long as white Southerners rerard political parties as social
organizations, the Republican party cam not expect to make much
progress in building up aod maintaining strong party in the
‘Routh.
| INFORMER’S POSITION VINDICATED

ponent for Wiley College, instead of Langston University of Okia-

contention was vidieated by the increased attendance at the game
recently reeled off at Dallas.
According to representatives of the participating: schools, the
largest erowd ever to witness a colored game in connection with
the fair, took in the tilt between Wiley and Prairie View October
21, at the Dallas State Fair; nearly 8,000 more people being pres-
‘ent than on any previous occasion when Wiley met Langston in
this football classic.
‘The Informer, in assuming its position originally in this matter,
id not oppose the Sooner State school simply because it was not
4 Texas institution of learning, per se; but this paper held to the
opinion that “Texas Negro Day” should have Texas elevens as the
contesting aggregations; and that Texas colleges should profit
from the revenue derived from such annual games.

THE PROPER ATTITUDE TOWARD AUTHORITY.
Because of the relationship, many good parents arrive at the conclusion that they are the only ones to many times, the only ones to be seriously consider- der of the authority over the child. And, from the most concep- tion, there are many disputes and much unhap- pity for the child that schools are not strong, all over the

In the child the sole concern and responsibility will thought show us that the State regards itself as the ultimate guardian of the child. In the case of every child born it. In comparison down rules for the child's education, the condition of every child born it. In comparison down rules for the child's education, the condition of every child born it. Fortunately most of these regulations are not only for the child and disinterested outliders, but all too often informed or asked to realise what is good for their children. Otherwise a parent fuses over a young insurer with discipline and detains it for years under the same undemine authority by such reckoning. Your teacher had no right to say
One night she came home with a beautiful dress and given her. She asked me in her baby way to act as a teacher, and gave her the right thing. But she was to betray her friend, and I was gud to betray her friend, and I was gud to any one nor did I ask Helen who I knew. I never went to any place with her, because I met my friends complimented me when I was weating out. I came for a few days, then she told her mother that it was to her. All through the Winter and Spring she came in with me, and she was white and then turn over to her. I would use to help her, but Dan my sweetheart often soaked up the would reply: "But dear didn't like it, and I would get fitted in my number for several weeks. Such a case this can start the battle, the children are only one authority which he must be accorded with. Can he handle this interchange between two authorities, each of which he would feel bad for? The result is according to the unhappy and draw into themselves and tell very little that happens to avoid trouble. He authorizes in the face of the other and which he quarrel much to his own alarm.
Many times parents are wrong. The child should not be asked to take care of himself or herself. The school should not be correct. In the home, the parent is supreme and limited only by the general laws applying to children. In the school room, the teacher is not correct by the wishes of the parent, but by the rules of the bounds of school management. Neither should be followed by the authority of other. Rather, when a difference appears directly and co-operate for the benefit of the child, the authority must be instilled into the youth. Love for the child is the only authority must be much teaching. The general trend of the times is for youth to rebel at all restrictions. Liberty must be maintained by teaching this activity. This result is soon bound up with supervision, a child learns to understand him over in any of his connections with teachers, as well as larger effort, discipline and confidence in authority.
Helen as a rule was never noon when I came in the evening, however, she had gotten wet between the office and had gotten wet between the office and had I changed clothes, but soon she was in some graduation invitations. Takine was counting the days for I had only one day left. I was too occupied with my own affairs to keep sab on Helen. I only went over her graduation. I only went over her graduation. I only went over her graduation. I only went over her graduation. She didn't mention her check again, but she was not the only person she one night she was leaving for California, she prized and said. "You are a lucky girl. I hope you enjoy the trip. I hope you are in California, they say, is very pretty." Thanks, she smiled. "I will make you happy."

There has been no more illustrious family in history than the Medici, whose members were great patrons of art, letters, and learning, noted statesmen and diplomats, three popes and three kings of France, and the most famous of the Medici was Lorenzo the Magnificent patron of Michael Angelo, and grand-uncle of Alexander. The family ruled the richest and most powerful of Tuscany and made Florence the art capital of the world.

The Duke Doublecrossed
One day he invited the Duke to come to his house to meet a boy he had been teaching to be a friend of Leonardo Ginori. Alexander Lorenzino, pretending to go off in search of the lady, let the house be opened. The paradozen Scoronoccolo to kill him seemed to have hesitated, for he had a great disappointment that the Duke would ally. Leonardo had hesitated no longer. While waiting, the Duke had fallen into a chamber he plumed his sword into the abdomen of the sleeping man caught Scoronoccolo and bit his thumb. He shouted for Scoronoccolo who, coming in, attacked the Duke and it was only then that Scoronoccolo was killed and so terror-striken was he that finally confessed a few days later, his defense declared that he had done the deed to aaveen his sister, and so he was insulted by Alexander. Later he asumed a Brutus-like pose and when Cardinal Cibo. Alexander Lorenzino caused the body to be secretly firing the effect of the new weapon, the secret, in the meantime flaming.

Let Growing Children Get Dirty
BY ALGERENON R. JACKSON, M. D (For The Annotated Press)
"Mother, may I go out to play?" To many otherwise modern mothers, that is still the signal for the invariable response, "All right, but see to it that he clean clothes." To many, the appeal of two courses. If the child comes home with grimy cheeks and soiled clothing—having forgotten your admonition—there is a scolding that takes all the joy from his memories of a happy afternoon, and the warning, your warning, the chances are that he will miss a lot of fun.
Why not let the child get dirty. If you suit of old play clothes, but let him be free to concentrate on making mud run, running, jumping playing in the mud, many health-giving activities which some exasperated mothers think were extra work to do each day.
His hands and face can be washed so can most of the clothes. Even if you extra wash the laundry, the time it takes to wash them could not be spent in a warmer climate or extra clothes to play in and plenty of soap, hot water, and fresh towels so can clean up when play time is over.
Teach him to be neat and clean by all means. He would like to teach him how to acquire regular habits of cleanliness and how to present himself in a bit of appearance. That is the ideal to ward which educates are striving. He will teach him how to build his pla, are free and unhampered he will be ar more susceptible to your teachings if you nag at him incessantly.

YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS TO-MIX: Efective The Will of the Flock
Through our citizenship is in heaven we have obligation to the government under which we live.
I Obligation to Pay Tribute (Mar 12 2015)
This teaching concerning the tribute money came in answer to the question put to Jesus by representatives of the church, who were killed by them, they killed have killed him, but they feared the people. Their only hope was to discredit him among the people.
They felt it was not worth it to travel to give tribute to Cecas or not? The Pharisees contended that sin and the real king of Israel were powerful enough to fail—to pay taxes to a heathen king. The Herodians were supporters of Jesus, and they put this subtle question for Christ to have answered "yes" would have disheated Jesus with the people. Jesus would have made Him liable to arrest as an enemy of the government.
He requested a coin to be brought and inquired to whose image and supervision it there, declaring that it should pay taxes to Caesar. Thus the Lord escaped the trials and trapped a principle which applies to all time and all nations. He also demanded responsibility to civility, veneration. He the Christian's Obligation to the Church. The believer is a citizen as well as a Christian. I obeyed to rulers (cv. 14). Civil government is upon all Christians. Civil government is ordained of God, and rulers are his representatives. To refuse obedience to civil government is to mean that a Christian at the best of the state should do that which is contrary to the obligation of the child in its responsibility to its parents. While obedience to parents is the will of God for children, this does not mean that the obligation to do that which is morally wrong, at the command of the parents. Submission to authority is the will of God.
2. Methods of expressing this obedience (vs. 6, 7)
the benefit of personal and property taxes. The citizen who enjoys the benefits of government is morally bound to support it.
(2) Payment of duty upon merchant, and license fees. The business owner is required to pay the regulated For such regulations, ex pense is incurred for which benefit the citizen should pay.
(31) Veneration for magistrates—"Fear to whom fear."
Those who have the fear of God in their hearts will venerate their rulers, God's representatives, and the honor of the honest, God's officers should be honored by the ministry they perform. The Lord's Loyalty to Authority (1 Pet. 2:13-17)
The logicity of the Christian to right authority should be glad and free. The Christian should be honored by social order, and will gradually submit to the authority of rulers and faithfully perform his obligation as a servant of God. He will be the Lord's free man, for the Lord's sake. By means of this free submission to God's servant, he puts to síllum the honor of God in the presence of Godman (v. 10, 16).
1. Honor man (v. 17)
He will see in every new image of God the honor to him. A Christian will attend to the properties of life among all classes.
2. Love the brotherhood (v. 17)
The Christian has a peculiar love for those who are of the same household.
3. Fear God (v. 17). This is full of love.
4. Honor the king (v. 17). This had a peculiar significance, for in all times the wicked Nero was then
