BOSTON ELECTS
NEGRO WOMAN
TO YWCA BOARD
BE FLORENCE RUFFIN RIDLEY (For The Associated Negro Press)
Boston, Mass. — The election of Miss Evlyn Klugh to the board of the Y. W. C. A. of Boston has not received the attention due an event of such national interest and importance.
It appears that there is only one other city besides Boston that carries a colored woman on the board of the "Y." That other city is Toledo, Ohio, and the representative is Mrs. Constance Eidley Heilip. Both young women were elected at about the same time and both had received training and experience very similar in character.
The "Y" situation in Boston has been for years a matter of disputation, with much feeling upon both features: a matter which, upon some features, Negro Boston was divided, while white Boston realized that in life and life of the work in which it colored unless handled with great care.
An account of the spirted conference between colored and white conference which extended over several seasons, conferences when points were made, this account would read:
Not only did Negro Boston make easily intelligent demand that we "Christian" in its title, but it pre-
wing lodges to the institution's administrative force. For two years, Miss M. Robert, Gould Shaw, Settlement House, conducted the discussion group of the Student Interactive Organization of Boston, Miss Klugh, also a student worker of Shaw House, host the interacial group and in time deigned from Boston, Miss Klugh, on its executive board of the "Y." Those who have been interested in her work who has not been interested at least) will find much food for thought in her book. Here in Boston, the "Y" has moved into new commodious and almost luxurious quarters and has declared it is located in the heart of the city, the "Y" cafeteria solves the more difficult position of girl looking for food service downtown; the new board member not only fits her position by reason of her pre-teen age, but is also building up interest, numbers and euthimination and fine group of interracial students. The situation has many heartening impetus to all colored people, not the white people, but the belief that Christianity can mean more than a name and that Christianity to a test.

Fall Food Festival Is Pulling Large Crowds At Pilgrims' Building
In concluding her remarks, Mrs. Kramer asked if other women are obtained nowadays in cooking meals by the employment of gas cooks. She also asked other types of stoves can not afford the uniform heat and make for cleanliness and beauty in the kitchen as the women with pens, note books and recipes have some valuable cooking information from this culinary authority, who has been exclusively for coloured women, and judging from the large attention women are enjoying the school and taking advantage of every situation, even to the free prizes and favors given to women in the session. A special session of the school will be held Saturday, November 9, from 2:30 to 4:30, with the exhibition terminating Saturday night with music,

Nov. 6, 1927—Nov. 6, 1929
With a heart full of love and sacred devotion to a dear loving father, to whose mercy this poem is respectfully dedicated.
We live in deeds not years, in shadows, not breeds, in feelings, not in injuries on a dial;
We should count time by heart throbs.
He most lives who thinks most, feels
Life's but a means unto an end; that end,
Beginning, mean, and end to all things.

CHALLENGE TO BAPTIST LAYMEN
The failure or refusal of the two warring factions in the Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention of Texas to get together and amicably adjust their internal differences, is hurting a challenge at the Baptist laymen of this state, particularly those who are identified with local churches holding membership in these two bellicose organizations.
If the Baptist laymen of this convention can not wield sufficient influence over their pastors to persuade them to cease their bickering and strife, and unite their forces on a constructive program for missions, education and human uplift, then these laymen should either admit that they are moral cowards or sever their relations with their several local churches and join some other denomination.
Unless these few wringling ministers had some lay following, they would not persist in this religious (if we can term it that and be truthful) tug-of-war, but would have long ago become reconciled and harnessed their forces in a unified effort to reclaim and redeem lost mankind.
The Christian church was not established by the Great Founder merely as an institution to give men jobs and to provide spoils for the adherents and devotees of such selfish and self-centered pseudo-religious leaders; but the primary object of the church was and is to save mankind from the Adamic sin, to raise man from his lowly state and redeem him from the broken law.
The Baptist laymen (in the employment of this term, we are included in the woman of Texas have the key to the situation in their own hands, if they will only use it.
These laymen and laywomen are the sole financial support of the majority of local churches comprising the Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention; and no church can be operated nor any legal fight conducted without coin of the realm and considerable of it, too!
If these contentious preachers do not have enough of the grace of God in their hearts to stop all this denominational flasco, then the laymen and laywomen ought to keep their money in their hands and laywomen ought to either cont to any denominational cause, district, or state, until these religious leaders come to their senses and dealat in their wild orgy of spending the poor people's money in legal regulations and enormous fees to lawyers.
Where has all the money come from with which to conduct this intra-denominational fight?
How much of this money have these bellicose ministers paid out of their own personal funds?
How much of this huge sum of hard-earned money has come from the pocketes of the duped and deluded working men and women holding membership in the various Baptist churches of Texas?
The Informer has been advocating and urging these two factions to forget their differences and unite on some outstanding man for president of the convention—a man who can lead the denomination from the wilderness of confusion, contention and misunderstanding to unity and Christian bond; but only one faction has endorsed and agreed to follow the repeated suggestions of this paper.
Due credit must be given to Rev. E. L. Harrison of Houston, leader of one faction, for his proffer of peace on more than one occasion to Rev. E. Arlington Wilson of Dallas, head of the other faction; but to date nother Rev. Wilson nor his followers seem declined to deal with Rev. Harrison and his bloc on any terms caused the convention and insure its peace, progress and permanency. If Rev. Wilson and his backers are not willing to compromise this matter, as Rev. Harrison and his faction have offered to do cm numerous times since the controversy arose, then the Wilson faction is responsible for the present plight of the convention and denomination, notwithstanding the issues or matters which caused the original rift. He sent in letters and signed newspaper articles that he is willing to step down and out as leader of one warring faction, if Rev. Wilson will do likewise; and even since the decision of the Fifth Court of Civil Appeals at Dallas, holding that Rev. Harrison is the lawful president of the Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention of Texas, the Houston pastor has written Rev. Wilson and agreed to relinquish the presidential claim, if the Dallas minister would agree to do the same with his group.
Though these offers of Rev. Harrison seem to have been made in good faith, Rev. Wilson has replied in kind, and often evasive, thus—but he has never met the Houston minister as per agreement; the recent conference between these two leaders, scheduled at Butler College, Tyler, Texas, having failed to materialize because Rev. Harrison was the only person present at the meeting, the previous designated and agreed upon by him and Rev. Wilson.
In the words of the well-known Negro jubilee, "Do you call that religion?" The answer comes back in thunderous tones and reverberates over hills and plains: "No, chile, no!" If the obstacle to Baptist unity and harmony lies in the Wilson side, then he and his immediate advisers be repudiated by every decent and self-respecting person who is an member of a church where he is not up with the Dallas divine; and if the faction is the hindrance or stumbling block to peace and concord, then the same sad and bitter fate should befall them. The Informer is for right in this controversy, and this paper holds to the deep-seated conviction that the division was not precipitated over any differences on fundamental principles of the church, but rather over the question of office-holding and the "divvy" of the spoils.
Whether this is true or not, the fact does remain that the Baptist laymen and laywomen of Texas can put an end to this disgraceful affair, right; if they will "sit down" on these pugnacious men and refuse to support them or any denominational cause until an armistice has been signed and "diplomatic relations" restored. Amen!
The indictment recently returned by the Cook County (Illinois) grand jury against Bishop Archibald J. Carey, prelate of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and member of the Chicago Civil Service Commission, has brought the denomination face to face with the question of permitting a member of the episcopacy to both be involved in the political office at the same time. The charge preferred against the Windy City bishop is that a member of the civil service commission of Americas's second city, he accepted money for jobs and promotions of civil service employees; and whether he is convicted or exonerated, the fact remains that his official connection with such a political body places him in a position that may oftimes prove embarrassing to him, his church and race.
When the bishop was tendered the commissionership, The Informer was one of the few papers in America who took the attitude of disliking the prelate should spurn the portfolio and devote his time and talent to the work for this paper felt then, and feels now, that no bishop or high religious leader should form such an alliance with any political faction.
Far be it from, The Informer to attempt to sit in judgment on the Chicago prelate, or even remotely insinuate that he is guilty of the charges preferred against him; but whatever results from the indictment it can be laid directly at the door of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which allowed this high church minister to be involved in the political office. The Great Head of the church advised against His followers trying to serve two masters, and the Apostle Paul counselled his adherents to "shun the very appearance of evil."
In a politically-minded and vice-ridden city like Chicago is reputed to be—where occupants of public office are being accused constantly and often indirect for alleged shady and crooked deeds—no bishop of any denomination should have accepted such a position. The bishop of Chicago is the great African Methodist Episcopal Church, through its bishop council, did not place its stamp of disapproval upon Bishop Carey forming any unholy alliance with mammon.
The Informer does not mean to contend or infer that a bishop should not be active in the political affairs of his city, state and nation; but such activity should not necessitate the acceptance of a high political office while serving as prelate in the church.
Like water and oil, the two just will not mix, and in the final analysis the church will lose more than it can hope to gain by permitting one of its bishops to hold such an office.
To prevent a recurrence of the Carey episode, the next general council of the African Methodist Episcopal Church should enact a law prohibiting all the bishops of episcopal offices at the same time, and thus the denomination, race and society will be saved from such a sickening and sorrowful spectacle as now confronts this particular church and the Negro race; for when all is said and done, it is the Negro race and African Methodist Episcopal Church be the brunt of this responsibility and face whatever discredit and misgrace which may accrue as a result of the indictment and trial.
DRIVERS TAKING TOO MANY CHANCES
The story goes that a man once advertised for a chauffeur and several applicants responded in quest of the job.
The employer asked the first applicant how close he could drive the car to the edge of a precipice which was not far from the road. The employer asked the applicant for withdrawn that he was such an expert handler of a car's steering wheel that he could drive it right on the precipice's edge and not meet with any accident.
When the second applicant, standing in line, was asked the same question but with the applicant for withdrawn that inform the man that he would stay as far away from the edge of the precipice as possible; adding that in his driving he did not believe in taking chances.
The practice of so many drivers of automobiles "taking chances" is responsible, in a large measure, for the alarming proptosis of car accidents. The driver must inform the autoists will drive at a break-neck speed, endanger their cars as well as others, and jeopardize both their lives and the lives of others, when such drivers are going no where in particular; and we venture the assertion that the majority of the automobile accidents occur where the drivers are not bent on any mission of emergency, providing emergency services, possible accidents and other factors when "taking chances."
Too many automobile drivers depend upon their smartness and chance-taking ability to get them by in numerous traffic situations, but they will do well to remember the old adage about the pitcher going to the well ninety-nine times without a mishap and finally getting smashed on the one hundredth round. The pitcher going to the well ninety-nine times without a mishap and most of the automobile accidents are due either to reckless or careless driving.
Of course, many unavoidable automobile accidents happen and will continue to occur as long as human beings drive cars; but the driving public needs to be educated in order that the injuries and deaths from automobile collisions and smashups can be reduced to an appreciable extent in this country; and most especially around Houston, where the toll in human lives from such accidents has assumed an alarming proportion during recent months.
BI-RACIAL HOSPITAL BOARD NEEDED
Instead of the Houston Negro Hospital having two directing and often conflicting bodies, functioning or essaying to function as white advisory committee and colored board of directors (the former having all the power and the latter merely holding honorary positions under the general idea to revise the constitution and bylaws of the hospital corporation and create a bi-racial board of directors or managers). Under such an arrangement, the board would be composed of white and colored members, and one year, if the number were eleven, there could be six white members and five colored, and the following year six colored and five white members. In this way the governing and directing board could really function as the Houston Negroes have lost in the races, promote understanding between the directors and increase the efficiency of the local elemeosynary institution. No institution of this kind has ever been operated successfully with two boards, one holding Damocles' sword over the head of the other and exercising autocratic and arbitrary power, with the other serving in the role of an automaton or mannikin. Furthermore, such procedure will afford the colored directors an opportunity to profit by the rich experience of the white members in the conduct of such large enterprises, and will restore the organization to its original form in the local hospitals and its dual board of management or mismanagement.

RELIGION AND POLITICS!
武
The good bishop, like Bishop Cannon, pleads the laws. They both blame the accusation on political persecution. But neither can claim that it is persecution for righteousness or that the bishop may expect to be burnt with fire. He who fights with the political sword may expect to perish by the same instrument. The bishop may not hope to play the game and escape the blame. A good politician must be a good sportman. He must not squash the enemy, but on him. Mr. Carey was not indicted because he was a bishop, but because he is enmeshed in the dity game of politics as played by an evil regime. Gully or innocent, unconcern or guilty—the situation is equally lamentable. He will be forbidden for which let us hope and pray, he will surely extirpate himself and his church from the unholy incurrence of dirty politics and filthy lure, and

The debacle of three bishops in the corresponding branches of the great Methodist denomination illustrates the peril of the church's religion, politics and mammon. Bishop Cannon of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, has just taken a trip to South America, where it be it hoped, he may excite himigate his political and filthy lure. No sooner had he let loose his gospel gun on the Democratic stronghold in Virginia, than did the crafty Senator Glass counter by accusing him of gambling in Wall Street. Think of a bishop, mammoth, fostering his personal fortune by taking a filing at the stock market? The good bishop faces ecclesiastical trial before the next General Conference, and, in his moral and political authority, will never be the same again.
Let the church learn its lesson. Let the younger aspirants to leadership take heed. Let such aspirant high up in the church, and Charles H. member of the Nordic race!
Now comes Bishop Carey of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and goes the other two one better. There are two passages of scripture which I would recommend for the constant persual of all ambitious bishops and money-mad ecclesiast: "We cannot serve God and mammon." "Ren is not God," Canaan says, and unto God the things that are God's."
In a speech delivered recently in Chicago, Congressman Congraves audited his colored auditors to organize their forces and respect themselves; asserting that they should respect you if you don't respect yourselves." it bit further, the race称 said: "You haven't received much political recognition because you haven't fought for it. Organized! Organize! Organized! Women and women for leaders, but don't choose any one who wants a political Job. Never place a hungry dog to
The public press tells us that Bishop Carpey has been indicted by the grand jury of Chicago for corruption in office. When the good bishop entered into an unholy alliance with the Ku Klux Klan, he stood amused. When he accepted a highly renumerative office under the same regime, we were dumfounded. We waited patiently to see whether the great A. M. E. Church founded by Allen and fostered by the Ku Klux Klan or sanction this unholy alliance.
Then to give his auditors a practical demonstration of the power he has in DePpe's added: "In Chicago we have representatives in every block where Negroes are poor and people without buying a postage stamp. Do that here and you will get something of the advice of not only is good for the colored citizens of Cincinnati, but those of every American city, but also of the people for political bargaining; and Houston Negroes will do well to hear and bead the admission of the congressman in the district."
The General Conference met in Chicago. Anxiety stood on tip-toe. Will Carey be required to give up his sarcastic or his secular office or will he be allowed to serve God, Caesar and mammon, at the same time? Carey will be required to serve two masters who were not or speaking terms with each other, draw munificent salaries from each mammon, but the local bishop was removed from the Chicago area, and Carey will in charge where he might the better essay dual training with divided loyalty between God and Thompson. Presumably, the bishop will be a liaison officer between the A. M. E. Church must take the responsibility and share the odium which results from this endurance. In the judgment of many, it was the most sore blow ever struck at the Negro's capacity for enlightened thinking. The bishop will deeply embarrassed by Bishop Carey's indictment. If he is convicted that heaven forbid, the denomination and indeed the whole race must need puts on sack-cloth and sahes Allen and Payne will look down from the embattlements of glory and deplete that the church for which they have served has come to such a mess as this!

No one dares say that Bishop Carey is guilty before a court has pronounced judgment. Under our generous provision every man is deemed innocent until he has been proven guilty. The public mind makes up its judgment. The public mind makes up its judgment by its own appraisement of the facts; circumstances and conditions involved in the indictment, and cares little about the subsequent decree of the courts. Danghery and Doheny were not found guilty by the courts Falls was. But the public mind requires that the incurrence in the several cases, Mr. Hoover made up his mind as to the guilt of Perry Howard far in advance of trial. Vindication by the courts does not seem to affect his non-judicial decision. Whatever the legal outcome may be, Bishop Carey's indictment, growing out of a mish of unjustified accusations, should churn in his church in an ugly predicament.

The Informer herewith publishes full text of the decision recently handed down by the Court of Civil Appeals of the judicial district of Houston, the field that贺 E. L. Harrison, Houston, was duly elected president of the Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention of Texas and Rev. E. Arlington County of Dallas. The full text of the appellate opinion No. 10537. E. Arlington County of al, Appellate W. L. Dickson, et al., Appellants. From a district Court of Dallas County. The Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention of the state of Texas is a perennial missionary education missionary effort and Christian education among the colored people in churches of this state, and to coach the American Baptist Home Mission Society in its missionary and educational work for the colored people in
The corporation is authorized to own, and does not possess, such equipment and raises funds from voluntary gifts and raises funds to its annual meetings. It holds an annual meeting for the purprious officers, that is, the president, two vice presidents, a secretary, and auditor, statistician, and vice president of messages being required for an election. The executive board of the corporation is chosen for a term of three years, four of whom are elected at each annual meeting from regular Missionary Bakers from associations and other regular Missionary Baptist organizations from associations and other regular Missionary Baptist organizations, with the objects of the convention, delegate to the annual meeting, enrollment and actually enrolled and orated elders are required to pay a certain fee, and other requirements $25.00 each, and other
This suit resulted from a controversy between rival factions, that is, a group headed by E. W. H. and a group headed by A. A. L. Boone did in fact preside, as predicted by Wilson, and arbitrarily assigned the officers having for their purpose the correct enrollment of qualified messengers. A large number of accredited messengers were to be enrolled, but were not, and when the ballot was taken on the election of the roll, it was not called, and thus they were afforded no opportunity to vote. The roll were not called, and thus siding officers, resulted in 276 votes for Wilson and 21 for Harrison, but its correctness was immediately challenged. The officers, adherent, and a division demanded, which was arbitrarily refused by the officers, that all who favored Harrison to stand, and 338 arose and were counted. Harrison, discloses that the Harrison faction really dominated in numbers over the Wilson faction at the Paris meeting, and that for the failure to properly enroll the messengers who favored Harrison, and the arbitrarily calls of Boone, the presiding officer. With reference to the proceedings of the Sherman convention, now under review, the
"While a majority of the people in the convention favored the deed, they had not complied with the constitutional requirement in the agreement; that 220 delegates, being 50 ministers and 101 missionaries for Wilson, and therefore, that he was shown to have been elected president, the court further found, that while the program (or order of business) of the convention was carried out as originally presented, it was amended by a majority vote of the delegates, of course, the 220 delegates above referred to, and that, under the change of constitution, the election of the president provisions of the constitution are these:
"See 2. The members of this organization shall be divided into B.C. (a) messengers, laymen and B.C. have paid the assessment provided for in sec. 2 of Art. 4. This provision, however, has no application to the adoption of the program, or order of procedure, or to any question of procedure, or to any parent from a reading of sec. 2. Art. 8 of the constitution, as follows: "Before any official basis of the education of the Educational Convention of the State of Texas shall be transaction, except in cases of the convention and the convention program, the chairman of the enrollment community, must be the secretary of the convention a list of all members of the convention who have paid their annual fee and all members has been made to the secretary, such membership shall be required, provided one hundred persons as members in good standing in church in Texas have met the requirements as set forth in Art. 4, secs. 1, 2 and 3 of this constitution."
Brown, the presiding officer, ruler, on the motion to change the program on the election of officers from Friar to clergy, that only those delegates who, at that time had paid dues could vote, and that the accredited delegates present (in attendance of Harrison) were deputy presidents of the accredited delegates present (in attendance in these preliminary proceedings). Thus the vote was taken on the election of president which followed immediately after the order of prosecution was changed, the convention was amended, and the opportunity was afforded to message to pay dues and be admitted to the convention. The message of passengers had been made, his should have been done before any transa-tion, as provided by see. 2 Art. of the constitution, above quoted. The message of passengers had been dues to, and was enrolled by see. 2 Brown, who was appointed and enrolled on duty, was enrolled on enrollment, under the provisions of see. 3 Art. 8 of the constitution.
The chairman of the committee on enrollment shall be appointed at least 15 days prior to the commencement of the convention, and the same shall be announced in print in the manner of the secretary and so as to give the messengers an opportunity to inform and identify them of the convention, but nothing herein shall be construed so as to prevent any member from enrollement, before the convention closes.
Constring together secs. 2 and 3 of A.M. we think it is than the fifteenth day of the convention, and that his office, beyond the fifteenth day assembling of the convention. The committee provided for the appointment of a committee on enrollment, which contemplated, of course, that concurring members afforded messengers to pay dues and be regularly enrolled before any serious business of the convention was
The unseasonably hate, manifested in moving up the date for the election of officers, can find no reasonable excuse. The fact that most of those defendants who participated to circumvent the injunction and to avoid the loss of their delegates were afforded an opportunity to erase the reputation of Wilson as president, and the four members of the Board of Trustees who were elected with him, was in our opinion, compulsively burdened by the officers, in favor of the constitutional law of the corporation, and the right of the corporation, and

Morris, 73 S. W. 88; Gibson v. Morris, 83 S. D. 226. We are of opinion that, under the circumstances, the majors were fully justified in taking the position and in conducting its affairs, and that Harrison and the four trustees elected with him were duly elected officers of the convention. Harrison faction elected eight trustees, whereas there were only four vacancies, and by inference only are we able to determine the number of trustees held, that the following four were elected: T. E. George, Jr., and W. L. Dickson; who, together with the eight William Bowden, O. C. Colbert, L. A. Waller, H. Harrington, H. Choices constitute the Board of Trustees of the officers, other than for president and the four trustees mentioned, are not involved and therefore, are not disqualified.
This is a regrettable controversy, and a factual appearance to be regular in practice brings to the same confession of faith. No question of faith or of church belief could properly have been, for God could properly have been, for Bishops churches are swordless, each of them is not subject to the review power of a convention. The parties are patterning relations to the business of the convention, factions zeal and devotion, and ordinance that resort to the sentiments and unless their differents are artificially adjusted, valuable property will likely be lost. Golden convention for services by these litigious churches will result, and individuals against each to which all prefer alternatives facts we hold, that E. L. Harrison was likely elected president of the conference in 1928, and not E. A. Arlington Wilson, as found by the trial courts; George J., and not E. L. Penn, J. Carpenter, and W. L. Dickson were elected trustees, and not E. L. Penn, J. Carpenter, and W. L. Three were discussion groups directed by R. W.
