Carl leaps into the river just as the gang is coming up. The gang is working for several hours, and grows so weak and cold he can hang on no longer. Just then Hotshot speaks from the other side of the tree, and is relieved to see his friend, Carl, who is still alive. Carl's little friend went into the folds making big talk along behind listening appreciatively. Carl grazed a little longly after a mix well with these single tulle stolls. After instructing him regarding the way he arrived from the a fall trip by the wagon, he turned to the big house, leaving Carl on the porch. The warmth and the warmth of the early sun was grateful. In a few minutes two fills added fills emerged from the field. One of them, well built, clear, and well-fitted, he new weight, greeted him familiarly. "Hello, Carl," she said. THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1930 By now the sun, which had been shining for the day, burned with an intensity which created chinning heat waves all over the field. Overheated the sky of the day, burned with a intensity of clouds, their whiteness rivalling that of the cotton, to mar its vital color. The singer, whose voice high voice singing, Carl listened intently. "Do work hard Do boss ain't mean, Do whitest cotton I mote few." Then the whole field took up the chorus. "Pick de cotton Pick de boll Pick de pay Buy me a jelly-roll..." The fact that the pickers sang, the fact that the bollers paid, the fact that in Carl a new admioration for them, a new tolerance for heat, created in Carl a new ambition. They sang, they worked, they found pleasure in simple things, they made his friends in far off Chicago? Having written the letters, Carl sealed them in envelopes he had obliterated. He strolled slowly to the big house where the mail box was. Overlooked a yellow wall, the shadowy path he trod, and the window jasmine seemed the night with exotic perfume. Soft wind, frightened with a swarm, waved the foliage with gen- ire ruttings. It brought to Carl the sound of singing voices drifting slowly through the night. . . . Sylvan Terrace Not Like Most Colored Additions Editor's Note—The management of The Houston Informer publishes the following letters in the belief that they are self-explanatory. I have read your editorial "Negro Additions in Houston," and wish to correct the inference likely to be gained by your readers, that all Houston real estate dealers are guilty of profiteering methods in dealing with colored people. Admitting that the information it is justified as a banker change against the entire real estate business of the city. In support of this contention Embry & Gillette offer their colored subdivision -Sylvan Terrace- as an example of a homeplace being marketed on a policy directly opposed to that reviewed in the white homeplace across the track. The same interest rates are charged on contracts. Yet Sylvan Terrace lots of the same size are priced from 15% to 20% lower than those in the white homeplace across the track. Yet Sylvan Terrace are as carefully supervised and constructed as those of similar type built for white people. In addition to this, a colored contractor of unquestionable integrity, together with colored mechanics, are used in connection with the construction of the homes. Their margin of profit is no larger than that received on any other building. The same interest rates are applied to am prepared to substantiate with unquestionable evidence and with signed statements of colored residents of Sylvan Terrace and other colored additions put on by Embry & Gillette. Considering their twenty-five years of mutuality and satisfactory dealings with the colored public, I feel there should be am prepared to supplement your article, and hope that you will see fit to give it. This will acknowledge with thanks your very kind letter of a few days ago in which you called attention to our editorial "Negro Additions in Houston," and gave us facts concerning the Embry and Gillette Land Development Company. We attempted to deal with the question of the development of Negro additions in a very general way and to indicate the facts concerning the way in which prospective Negro home owners are forced to pay very high and sometimes exorbitant prices for acreage and homesites. I note from your letter that you do not set up a general denial of fees and are forced to pay an insight into the methods by which your company has helped materially in making fine homesites available to Negro owners at reasonable rates. The truth of the statements concerning your company is very easily proven by the testimony of those who have had dealings with the company in the article, but we cannot assume company. It is a pleasure for me, in behalf of the Webster Richardson Publishing Company to make public your letter which I think, for itself. I think it is true, however, that most of the companies developing the company are forced to such fairness as is indicated in your letter, therefore, The Informer feels that a general retraction of the article is not now in place. I hope though that the publication of your letter in our columns together with our answer to you may indicate our desire to be momentarily fair at all times to all concerned in such matters as G. H. A controversy concerning the place of Negro music in American life arose in the music class of which Ernest H. Mays, the composer of the piece, and Mr. Hays is professor of piano and theory in the Hampton school of music where he assists R. Nathaniel Mays. Mr. Hays defended the place of Negro music and was called upon to furnish information about it as well as to give an exposition of his concluding work. To illustrate his point, Mr. Hays gave a choral and instrumental recital. The event attracted so much attention that other classes abounded their own performances, and he drew the demonstration. A fine choir of white with a trained soloist gave the performance of choirs chosen chiefly the works of R. Nathaniel Dett, featuring especially his "Juvenile" performance. When the recital closed the audience gave Director Raymond and the choir a declaration to have been one of the outstanding features of the Summer School. But white men and their civilization are down also. Schools are poor. Modern methods have not worked effectively to develop the natural resources of the state as they should have been developed. Culture within the state is still defined in terms of inadequate libraries and poor infrastructure. In North Carolina, just the reverse has happened under just the reverse psychology on the part of the leadership of that state. And so it is reasonable to hope that the repudiation of Blease means the repudiation of the ideas which he represented. It is not that Blease has been a mongrel with the mobs which he so gallantly praised and encouraged, he gives place to a more enlightened leadership which is definitely dedicated toward the establishment of justice in the courts and the spread of brotherly love and mutual tolerance. Without these, there can be no real cooperation between the classes of white men and black men. In these cases, there can be no real progress either economic or cultural. NEW COMMISSION TO STUDY LYNCHING News dispatches of this week indicate that a new commission to study lynching has been appointed in Georgia. It is composed of editors of some of the leading journals of that state together with a number of other experts. At time, it is indicated that under the direction of the N. A. A. C. P. and its supporters, a new ant-lynch law is being drafted with a view to submitting it within the next few months to Congress. Both of these procedures are being undertaken in view of the increase in lynchings within the past few months in this country. The commission is also working with the Interracial Committee and the law by the N. A. A. C. P. The Informer believes that both of the projects are vitally necessary. The one as sponsored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has the carkmarks of militantism. The other is working along different lines and the lines of study and discussion with as little of the militant to mark it as has been the case with all of the work done by that organization herefore. There can be no doubt that the work of both organizations has been profitable in the past although they worked along different lines and the reason to that effect has been good. The problem of lynching is by far the most grievous that America faces today. Those who have studied it from several angles realize that there is no single reason for the recurrence of the various types of mob murders which have scoured the pages of newspapers and newspapers of the United States have played their part. Economic pressure has had its share in the equation. Politics has contributed to some extent; and by far the most significant circumstance in connection with the question is the fact that it is no longer sectional in its scope. It is not sectional in the North or East as it is in the South where it had its birth. The Informer believes that it will be eradicated from American life only when savagery in American psychology has given place to more enlightened ideas and procedures. The history of mankind proves that society has come to its present state of perseverance. It is not surprising that as a by the pressure of circumstance which was the direct result of all of the forces which operate in society, Leaders of thought and those who stand at the forefront of American life and thought must have the gravity of the problem brought before them in such a way as to challenge them, active support in it, and a willingness to be involved in the largest share in the work. Those who have the mind of the beast and whose hearts are attuned to the siren songs of the demagogue and the bigot must be compelled by a fear of the law to stay within the confines of the bounds of decency. There a law against lynching, if passed, will serve its largest purpose. The organizations that work with the organizations may well supplement each other. And the part of the general public, without regard to race, in the whole situation should be that of the helpful partner in an enterprise which will result in lasting good to a nation which now is being sorely beaten by the forces of harborman and which stands in the shadow of harborman so long as it does not assert itself in behalf of decency. NEGRO WAITERS TO STRESS SERVICE The more than 10,000 delegates to the annual convention of the National Association of Colored Waiters and Hotel Employees, which is being held in Chicago this week, are stressing "service" and the need for study to prove themselves more efficient in the carrying on of their professions. It is being pointed out that the staff of the hotel owners are being replaced over the country and that hotel owners and managers are indicating that the changes from Negro help are being made because the type of service which others give is superior to that of Negroes. To offset the condition in Chicago, the local branch of the association is conducting schools in the city to train foreign languages and it is planned that a large part of the time of the training will be devoted to actual schools of instruction during the week. The Informer commends the spirit of the leaders of the organization and recommends the adoption of the same type of thought on the problem of labor for the leaders of groups in all other occupations among us. Not only should the waiters of Chicago and New York be trained to contribute better service than any other class of hotel employees but they should go farther and actually study to contribute definitely to the sum total of the knowledge and practice of that particular field. The activity in this regard should be a part of the task of the organization in Houston as well as in every section of the hotel industry. The job of the side against Negro hotel help would be turned toward that help. The time has come in America when there can be no middle ground. It may as well be realized that there are no more "all Negro" jobs. White men and Mexicans will now take any sort of job, and from now on it will simply be a case of the "survival of the few." The hotel industry has thought, interest in the job, and punctuality at all times. It is to be hoped that the idea of study will spread from the hotel men to men of our race in all lines of endeavor. Competition will become keeper as time goes on. There is one sure way to escape economic slavery for us as for all others in this country. That is to study of study to show ourselves more efficient than our competitors. Two more of the policemen of the city of Houston have been killed in the line of duty. And to the credit of the Chief of Police and his force, the murders have already been apprehended. The police have also been charged with the credit is due the force for its speed and precision in the case. It is also noteworthy, in this particular case, that there has been no talk of lynching of the two suspects on the part of the daily papers and, if one is willing to read between the lines it might be described as a plea for leniency, despite the fact that both of the stain officers were among the favorites on the force by reason of their efficiency. Just before the opening of the National Democratic convention in 1972, the murderer in which a policeman lost his life. The murderer was a Negro, according to report. He was wounded; and while lying on his bed at the hospital with little chance to recover, he was taken out and lynched. Just what the outcome of the cases against the suspects was has not been determined. The police are not sure that the cases are closed and that nothing more is to be expected. Just what is the difference between the two situations? One of those commenting upon the most recent happening indicated that there must be something wrong with a member of the police. The police are not sure that the cases are closed and that nothing more is to be expected. Just what is the difference between the two situations? One of those commenting upon the most recent happening indicated that there must be something wrong with a member of the police. The police are not sure that the cases are closed and that nothing more is to be expected. Just what is the difference between the two situations? The Informer hopes that the law in this latest case will be sure and impartial. It is most happy for Houston that the impulses of those who loved the slain men are being held in check and that the law will be made clear that such procedure will become the rule in all cases and that out of serious reflection on the difference in the practice in such cases where men of different races are guilty, the conviction of the truth of the statement that unless the law applies impartially to the men, the lives and property of no safe are made. SOUTH CAROLINA REPUDIATES BLEASE Some weeks ago, The Informer called attention to the fact that Cole Blease, well known Negrophobe of South Carolina had won the Democratic nomination on a platform which called for the establishment of a new state news diapests from the general elections indicate that this eminent advocate of the rope and the faggot has been beaten and his state in the future time will be represented by one who was not a candidate. For this evidence of an approach to civilization and enlightenment the majority of the voters of South Carolina are to be complimented. Their repudiation of the ideas expressed by Blease will go far toward remedying many of the fortunate aspects of his state. The information that much further advanced along economic and cultural lines than it now is. The defeat of Blease, to The Informer, is not only the repudiation of a man, but it is the repudiation of the backwardness of the state and the backwarding hindered the progress of the state which he has represented. In unexcelled malignity, Till Mississippi raped my Till Mississippi raped my peace. Becker Washington spoke much better than he knew when he declared that those who would hold men down in the mire must content themselves to stay in the mire also. The state of South Carolina is a fine example of that fact. All of their thinking, unquestioned, is based on the fact that in some cases in terms of the effect which it would have on the Negro, "Keep the Negro down" has been the slogan in that state for In diabolic cruelty, I mastered all the while; Mistress Muskett awakened Beside a Mistress insulted. President Hoover On Lynching Evil President Hoover On Lynching Evil By KELLY MILLER, Howard University, Washington, D. C. The American people are glad enough to explain away this great national disgrace by giving out the impression that only Negroes are the victims of the attack. The men are fed on this feeling. Recently the governor of a great state dispatched an emissary to Europe to explain away his persafeffum dismal of his crimes, and was only a Negro. In conspionance with this idea, the crime of rape is sought to be imputed as the justifying ground for the dire punishment. The apologists strive to convince the authorities that it is a peculiar form of outrage limited to the Negro, and that the punishment but aptly fits the crime. They are not whit abashed by statistical retribution. The record of rape as disclosed in the book is that it is not in any sense a peculiar Negro failing. In the latest instance of lynching in Marion, Indiana, two rapists were taken by the mob and were charged for the same crime, or alleged crime. I see that the great Republican party promised in its platform to pass a bill that would require performance blank. The Negro delegates at Kansas City undoubtedly urged them to this resolution. It was a clear signal to the delegates to the gullible Negro delegation. When the American people awoke to the moral stigma of lynching of a black man, they were branding this aniquitous practice branding upon the moral forehand of the nation for foreigners to look at, and for the black people to firmly in hand. In the meeting. OPINIONS hope that President Hoover will not consider that he has discharged his duty in the preamble by authorizing his own officers in place seven nitting in his behaf. THE ECONOMIC OUTLOOK BY LELAND D. EWING (Substituting for C. W. W.) For the last six months the phrase, "hard times," has been through al- much more than the fashion. This is justified by the fact that we have seen the great busi- ness that has ever been witnessed by man. As for the cause of this condition many financial businesses and business managers have attributed to some attribute it to our system of mass production, some attribute it to a time in the cycle for a depression, and others to a period of ward since 1913, with only a little viva- dance due to the seasonal fluctuation of the weather. We have created an inflated dollar and the upward movement must stop long before the depression occurs in the dollar and release the hot air. The reason for the depression is we are more interested in the results before it hits a business depression and not to be considered by Ne- w Yorkers in the positive position and thus throw our black faces, bearing marks of horror and distress, in the picture of this de Although the way is dark all is not clear, we must be the leading forecasters in nearly we must now begin proactively ourselves for the next one which is so sure to commence. Of all, we must have means of securing jobs. This can be accomplished in units within the Negro business which are producing units in themselves. Negro business and untiring support of Negroes, no can Negroes succeed without the support of two are so closely related, let us all put our shoulders to the wheel and we put our hands to the wheel; it may to the bone, our blood will be the mark of success of the coming second. Let us save to the fullest extent so that when the flood comes again, we can go to our pockets with our hands, and we can feed the bread which we have saved and eat to our heart's content. A system of solidarity and cooperation. Let us for sure gain so that when we are called upon again to show our strength, we will be able to carry on and can laugh at the waves of hunger and distress try to hear us. Lastly be prepared for the depression will come again. Homely Philosophy GOOD HEALTH Health is usually undervalued until it is menacled or lost.
