The question sentimental campaign. The question Heffin and his Democratic opponent, H.J. Bankhead, in the following manner. It seems that some time ago Bankhead was one of the lawyers in a bama in which a Negro was permitted material and his and his most rum, which is also the official organ being spread the sown all over to the effect that this one fact in the life of the Democratic senate unites the United States senate. The new support of Bankhead has shown that Arthur File, Jasper lawyer and Lawyer, is in the case in which the Negro serves a juror. It is also a file for a position as federal judge here and that File is active in supporting the independent candidacy of Tom File, the senate against the regular Negro becomes the dominant issue in supporting him to the odds all against Tom Heffin. The University of Texas has conferred 14,506 degrees since its establishment in 1883. Raleigh, N. C.—(INS)—Congressman N. C. Raleigh, N.C., scheduled to address the National Negro State Fair on Friday, Oct. 13, at an announcement received by the office of his secretary of the fair. It was announced that he will be among those invited to attend the fair on Thursday October 23. Some question been raised as to whether Mr. DePriest from speaking, on once was刻的 case at Birmingham, Alabama, should dress the national convention of the Moselle Templates of America. When he was made by white hoodlums to interfere with the speech of the only Negro state convention, he was appalled on which Mr. DePriest will speak will be educational day at the fair, and Mr. Hunter states that the state are providing the largest number of events ever displayed at former fairs. It is also said that North Carolina's great OUR PHONE NUMBER IS PRESTON 1243 NUMBER 20 5,000 Be Used To y Boys And Education organized along the same line as the Ex-students Memorial Loan Fund of Texas, which provides rates under a state charter. The will may be made by any of the principal of the fund may be used for the purpose of providing education to girls of Texas who may need assistance in acquiring an education." He is very happy over this bequest to the University of Texas and will grow in Texas should fully take pride in this evidence of interracial cooperation. This significant contribution on the University of Texas will be a Negro institution of learning, voluntarily and without any other burden on the citizens of his state, regardless of race or color, receive an opportunity to the welfare of the Texas of which they are a part. The grief should view with the greatest consideration and appreciation, to the extent that the grief should leave no stone unturned in the way of racial self-help and racial self-immunization. LYNCH EVIL IS LAID ON CHURCH AND OFFICIALS Atlanta, Ga.—(INC.) The depressed feeling which Nigroon in this见见 in Georgia has brought out of outrageful lynchings in Georgia in recent month was somewhat less severe. Methodist Episcopal Church lay and clerical leaders went on record and warned of the terms of the neglect of the religious faith of the people with the heinessness of this dastardly act, and the complicity of public offence. They urged that measures be taken to account in the courts of justice and at the bar of outraged public opinion. They also added that "the situation of the people, and challenges every religious leader, and challenges every governmental leader to determined and unenlisting war upon this blighting survival of harmlessness." Who Mary Was (Lake 11, 251, 271) She was a Jewish mould of Narcissus. The first information we had of her is that she was engaged to be married to a man of Jewish heritage. Jesus presents the need to Jesus (v. 3). The clear implication is that Jesus should be present to present the Messianic cause by working a miracle. S. Jesus asserts his authority (v. 4). Jesus asserts his mother that he had now passed from her authority and that his Father will was supreme. S. Jesus confirms (v. 5). INTELLIGENCE AND INTEGRITY MAKE MEN AND RACES GREAT HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1930 WHY WE MUST HAVE THE BALLOT For many years there have been many among us who have felt and declared that "voting was a white man's business." On that basis those persons have not paid their poll tax unless they were forced to because they were the owners of property. Likewise, having paid the tax, they have not voted, even when they had the opportunity to vote. A look at the most recent news releases should give the simplest of us to know that we must continue to fight for the ballot as a means of saving ourselves and of guaranteeing to our children an opportunity to live as human beings in this country. Mobs galore are stringing our men up on the slightest pretext and there is nothing about it. The most recent developments in the Sherman case caused a stir in the media and the "district attorney had other pressing matters to attend to." What, in the name of the Master, could be more pressing than the task of punishing members of a mob which murdered a human without the semblance of a trial, burned a court house while the processes of the law were in operation, destroyed thousands of dollars worth of the property of other citizens who had been arrested and/or prosecuted a whole city which for many years had had the reputation of being dedicated to the pursuits of peace? Some may ask "what could the ballot do in such a case?" Certainly it could have resulted in the ability of Negroes to have compelled the district attorney to think of the importance of the riot cases before he went fishing or decided to argue the respective rights of the citizens to be protected from other murder cases, they could not have been as outstanding as those which involved arson, riot and murder as well. And this is but a sample. Negroes are being accused every day and railroaded to prison or into the hands of mobs which kill them, secure in the knowledge that nothing in the form of punishment is to follow. Ir the general scheme of things the New York State legislature has done and see even the improvement on the street on which he lives, done by Mexicans and others, while he, without a job, must somehow pay the taxes from which the pay of that Mexican or other foreigner comes. Could he be vote; and would he but handle his ballot in such a way as to make his power felt, such condition as would make him a foreigner offender. The salaries and emoluments coming from such jobs make them well worth striving for, at least to the extent of protecting the rights of the voters who make them possible. Let Negroes vote intelligently and they will soon realize the truth of these words. Let them but realize that without the ballot they have no voice in the government of the cities in which they live and protect from those who, voting, hate them and work against them. The Informer is not pessimistic but it is definitely alarmed for the future of the race unless there is an awakening on the part of all classes of us. Without protection and without jobs we face economic slavery and worse. Without protection in the cities in which we live, our investments in property mean little or nothing. Without the power to elect or defeat those who serve us, we can never afford to live in the city. Our profit by our removal from jobs and decent living. Along with all of our striving along other lines we must never cease to fight for the ballot. It is the only real guarantee of freedom in this country. STUDENT LOAN FUND FOR PRAIRIE VIEW The Houston Informer A WEEKLY NEWSPAPER FOR ALL THE PEOPLE deserving Negro boys and girls and their service to communities which otherwise would not have benefited by their training, but he has furnished one more indication, and they are furnished all too adequately. The students at Pleasant Grove, acquired prejudices, are at heart, more often than we think, dedicated to the progress of their state and the improvement of the lot of society in all its phases. This gift to a white institution would have been commonplace; but in a land where injustices, lynchings and mob murders are the generally expected thing from under Rev. U. S. K. sentant Gwora, was ordained to large crowd, who fully ceremony. Manager E. LIGHT AND SHADOW IN GEORGIA It would almost appear that the mobbists of Georgia are attempting to "get even" with the supporters of the law and with those who are attempting to study the lynching question. With the announcement of the appointment of an interracial commissioner, the mobbists of Georgia many years and furnishes lynchings and mob murders less than as many weeks. Bloody beats of the mob know that they lynched the wrong man two weeks ago when an alibi was established for him after he had been killed. Masked men invaded the home of a man who was to have been a witness in a case of lynching, and the mobbists assault of a Negro woman by white men. And this week a mob murders a weak and incapacitated, wounded suspect because a change of venue had been asked for by his attorneys who knew that he could not obtain a fair trial in the county of his residence. Add to all of this the ever present influence of the mob, who have you the story of Georgia. Much darkness but little light. There is no doubt but that in that state the mob is as surely the boss as is the gang and underworld of Chicago. Despite the earnest efforts of leaders in civic progress, the mob holds sway and dares the influence of Christianity and goodwill to gain a foothold. One wonders to what other lengths these exponents have taken to get the power of the government, the press, with the superiority of numbers and unlimited opportunity for training, they will nevertheless outdo the head hunters of the south seas in savagery and are guilty of perpetrating every known barbarity of the cannibal except the eating of their victims; and we do not doubt but that many more daring one among them has actually felt like doing that. In that state the law and it has never yet been enforced. The laws enforced as it has never yet been enforced. The masses of Georgia are apparently impervious to the fine infuctions of the mob. They are not infuctions to the mob. They need force; but its coming is still far off. America, the beautiful and great, has not yet become the land of decency. It agrees with the mob. Were it not so, it would effectively stop it. And believe it or not, all Negroes know that they are not infuctions to the living than any member of the mob, however Nordic he may be. CORSICANA BETTER BUSINESS CAMPAIGNS PLANNED Ameenment has just been made of the personnel of a committee headed by T. Arnold Hill which will study Negro business and conduct campaigns for its increase all over the country. Already much interest in the movement has been aroused as is the desire to increase the number of half dozen of the leading cities have asked that campaigns be conducted in these cities during the next year. The appointment of the committee is the direct result of the efforts of the National Negro Business League and the adoption by it of a practical rather than an inspirational program. There can be no doubt but that Negroes who now attempt to conduct business must measure more nearly up to the standards set forth in the book. Still being said of the unwillingness of the average Negro to patronize his own business concerns. Recently a store in a Virginia town was forced to close its doors because of the lack of patronage. Other business concerns have reported that they were unable to obtain the patronage necessary to success. All of these matters have been addressed. And yet, many of us have in mind many more concerns which the business members of the race to keep them open than have failed because of lack of support. Certainly prices must be right and goods sold up to the standard. Many elements enter into the ability of the Negro to purchase so as to meet competition. But there is often found in addition to imperfect goods and discourteous service. The Negro is the house of the house, a poverty of new ideas, a desire to sell color rather than money, an attempt to blame all of the lack of success on the race. TEXARKANA Negroes must learn that this is a day in which men go out and sell their goods rather than wait for patrons to come in and buy. Effort is necessary. Advertising, shrewd buying ability, good accounting systems knowledge of how to eliminate waste, courtesy in the extremes and the ability to sense needs and to fill them must become the key to success. Negroes must know those cities which invite the help of the committee. And it is to be hoped that there will be no lack of invitations to the committee. So long as America defines success in terms of buying power and the control of material wealth, those races or individuals who cannot measure up will find themselves in the rear of the great procession. Negro buying power controlled and harnessed, but will give a power or good to the race which cannot now be accurately determined. THE ENROLLMENT OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS A survey of the enrollment of the three Houston high schools by The Informer shows that more than 3000 children are enrolled in the courses. Increased enrollment is also reported from the Junior College and from the Junior High School. The Informer would feel inclined to state that this enrollment was an indication that times were not as hard as they are thought to be, because they know that many of these children are actually in school only because of which their parents are making because they believe in education. OPINIONS By KELLY MILLER. Howard University. Washington. D. C. Ours is an economic age, Jesus, speaking to a peasant of people, of a religious temperament, in a warm climate, urged his hearers: "to think not about what we eat or drink, or what we shall be clothed," where there is little religious idealism, people think mainly of creature comforts. About fifty million Americans are engaged in gainful occupations. Their main concern and chief interest is the creation and material. We still urge upon our choice youth who devote themselves to the higher phases of professional life to think of the things from above, rather than upon things to do. We are interested in terms of soils rather than silver and gold. The physician should seek to promote individual and social health, and not money or material reward. The lawyer is conserved with justice, and not money or material reward. Years to promote knowledge with incidental regard for salary. The worker is legitimate use of which the professional man can make of money is the function efficiently in his profession. Any more than this is a handicap. But when we come to the great generality of our species, their time is spent like the beasts of the sea, and we are in the quest of nourishment and creature comforts. In my earlier days, when I was swayed by a more intangible ideology, I greatly critiqued T. W. Jackson because he was disposed to intangibility. I was deprived of denomination of money and material substance. But the more I see of the hard struggle of the Negro to make the ends of life meet, the more I am invited with Dr. Washington's intensive sense. The Negro is up against the white man's standard, without the white man's opportunity. He strives to keep up his style of living without the contemplation. I often wonder what is to become of the Negro in our great cities and centers of population. As one goes along the streets of Harlem, New York, or South Chicago, and goes along half a generation ago for white people of income, income and wealth, now turned over to Negroes without any such supporting basis, one can imagine the Negro in the future?" In South Parkway, Chicago, the visitor is shown miles of palaces built for millennials, now occupied by Pullman porters or men and women of similar position and wages. In a large city of the North. The poor Negro is strained to the breaking point to keep up the standard of living imposed upon him, with few exposures of remunerative employment. Among the whites who employ labor to give the Negro the most poorly remunerative and undesirable places. When pressure increased, the whites such manual and mental employment. The Negro will persist in leaving the farm where he has a function and rush into the cities where he has neither. The urban Negro has all but the same function. The Negro is he as dependent upon the white employee for sustenance as the sucking babe upon the milk of his mother. His penance to show and display without a supporting substance, but a grotesque to a tragic situation. There are, however, hopeful cases in the desert of despair. Negroes in increasing numbers, let us hope, are acquiring efficiency and skill so as to be able to work their white employers. Enterprising Negroes are promoting associated enterprises, such as banks, insurance companies, the fittest of which will be able to provide the services they must have fallen on failure. A few Negroes are struggling against heavy odds, along lines of individual and partnership business enterprise. In the age of mergers, syndicates and co-operatives are becoming more manageable. Recently, in Chicago and New York, likewise in several other cities, attempt has been made to induce Hebrew proprietors who all but monopolize small businesses in negro-owned Negro clerks and helpers in those places supported wholly or mainly by Negro patronage. The success of this line has been amazing in the past, but it has now been inaugurated the scheme of associated Negro grocery stores under Negro ownership, management and control, which promises well for the future. All of these helpful procedures shall have contributed to the economic and industrial status the full quota of our possibilities, the question still recurs—"What is to be the outcome of this battle for bread?" "What shall we eat and drink, and wherewith shall we be clothed." Let our leaders in school, church, politics and society eat, drink and soberly on this ancient query. If you bury and sink your money you are not going to stay in the depression period forever. We must remember that only when money begins to circulate, do the banks need to be more efficient. It makes more work and you need better burying. But when you get bury, you are not going to A. New Perspective While we are taking our bearings, let us adjust our perspective. True, all men are let out with will but we are not. We go back at lower wages or longer wages have been infested since the war. Both have dropped some, but we have very definite reduction in wages. We of this generation have seen an increase in wages. Wages will not go back to pre-war rates. And we can't predict what they will for any raises now. And don't quit if you want to work. We will not leaf or work for what you can get. Stand fast. Do a good job. Work hard. The flood is a one-damn event.
