Mr. Greene engaged in employment among Negroes, its causes and its remedies. He portrayed the displacement of race workers on the grounds of racial injustice and in other fields of employment, and in garbage collecting, and in mechanical Mr. Greene then astounded his listeners by asserting that the Negroes' own reliability, at punctuality, failure to take care of their jobs have all conflated to drive him out of the community, "continued Mr. Greene, "must deceive him of the light of this displacement. Governor Saves White Murderers From The Chain Atlanta, Ga. — (ANP) Harvey and Wayman Bradley will not die in the electric chair for the murder of Doc Ewing, the son of the court. This fact has been known when Governor Hardman upon the recommendation of the State Prison commander to life imprisonment. The white youths were convicted of killing a man, aged man, and his wife in Coone County several months ago. Testimony at the trial showed that the youths were brutal and wanton killers even before the youths went to the home of the aged couple, along with Raymond and Katherine down the door and pillaged the house. After taking all of the savings of the yard and with chairs he beat the yard and with chairs he beat the house and with the same bloody club beat the aged woman's head to a pulp, days later they were arrested from the house of the murdered man. At the trial Cooper was convicted of being an accomplice and sentenced to life in prison, and sentenced to die in the electric chair. When the sentences were imposed in the state by the courts throughout the state, the judge was highly commended for their action. But his judgement was not to be executed for the murder of a Negro, no matter how he intended. The youths were subjected to mental test and found to be of "low mind" therefore the governors ceded to them imprisonment and now the conjecture is that only the minimum number of people who will again be free, v.i. the parish route, and be in position again to be imprisoned upon this state and be publicized. The Webster-Richardson Publishing Company, Inc., 400-411 Smith Street, Texas. · INTELLIGENCE AND INTEGRITY MAKE MEN AND RACES GREAT HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1930 THE GENERAL ELECTION Tuesday not quite as many people as voted in the Democratic primary went to the polls in Texas and decided the governor's race once and for all. Ross Sterling, winner of the Democratic nomination was the easy victor. The will of the people has been expressed; and in the language of the demagogue, "all is well." The courts, at least as far as all of those in Texas are concerned, the members of executive committees, and the moving spirits in the Democratic party feel that all is well. The people, that is the white people have spoken, and the governor of the state is the choice of the people. It apparently matters little whether or not a prospective 200-000 voters were practically denied the right to help in this choice of chief executive. It is of no consequence that their pleas and petitions fall on deaf ears and that they are by first one means and then another, done out of their constitutional rights. Democratic leaders claim that the primary is but the attempt of the party to choose a standard bearer. Let that be as it may. But there can be no question, in the light of the number of ballots cast in the primary as compared to the general election, that the Democratic primary, in Texas at least, is THE election. Some time ago a group of Negro leaders of Houston had occasion to discuss this question with a leading member of the Democratic party, who was an important participant in his attitude and attempted to discuss all other phases of the question except that of the justice of the practices of the leaders in cases like these. He exhausted all of his vocal means to show that the fault was not HIS, as such, etc., but it is still a matter of record that the practice is the same and that except for word of mouth, Negroes who are theirs are prohibited from exercising the rights which are theirs. The Informer along with all other Texans KNOWS THAT THIS CONSTITUTES RANK INJUSTICE. THE DEMOCRATIC ENERGY ADDED ELECTION WHETHER COUNTY OR STATE SIMPLY INTENDS THE RANKNESS OF THE INJUSTICE. Negroes may never win the right to vote in the Democratic primary. Subterfuge and proscription may continue to thwart their hopes and plans; but one thing is sure—as often as possible, they will not win their rights and to vote. They plan to stay on the job from now on and the things which are now denied them, they will pass on to their children as objectives. It is almost unthinkable in this day of good schools and modern education, of home owners and their families, of students and teachers, of cities as teachers, pastors and workers of all sorts in things civil and social, that they cannot help in the selection of those who will govern them. It is probably the rankest sort of injustice. In these modern days. It is unjustify of those who profess to be believers in democracy and a government of and by the people. --- REPUBLICANS SUFFER LOSSES Early returns from the senatorial elections in the various states indicate that the Democratic party has made definite gains in representation in the House of Representatives and that all of their members have been elected in the coming term. Much of the defeat of usually strong Republican majorities is laid to the economic depression and the usual blaming of situations like these on the political party in power at that time. The fact that the Democratic party there were Republican Senators who voted for the seating of Parker, are directly traceable to the opposition of Negro voters who for once in their careers "remembered" the party, have been filled with reports of pressure which was being brought to bear on those who supported this nominee of the president who was anti-Negro. Whole campaigns have been waged around whether or not the party should be allowed to have been defended of Negro supporters could hope, because of party affiliations, to expect their support in an effort to be reelected. Early returns seem to show that in states like Ohio and Kansas the power of the party has been definitely felt. They have spoken in no uncertain term. It is to be devoutly hoped that the final results will show that this is so. Republican majorities have come to mean little to the Negro voter as time has gone on. Victory for the Grand Old People is not going to be easy for the gullible Negro voter who has stood hard by the party and found time after time that the party had forgotten to remember him either in the proposal of remedial legislation or in the appointment of a new governor. Each succeeding contest is teaching the Negro more and more of his possibilities with the ballot. He is becoming more and more skilled and thoughtful in its use. As it is as should be, the Negro voter will come to pass despite things being equal to those for all others—give him real voice in the determination of his civic and political fate: Leadership in this direction is efficient. Those who follow it faithfully are sensible. Votes in large enough quantities are not going to be the same as this American commonwealth where these civic issues are to be decided. THE HOUSTON INFORMER THE G. O. P. TO STUDY THE NEGRO VOTER Announcement has just been made of the appointment of Geo. Harris of New York by the National Republican Congressional Committee to establish offices in New York and to study the New York Republican Party's strength of theocratic party is making among Negro voters in the East. According to Mr. Harris' statement given to the press last week Republican leaders are working hard to line up the Negro voter and are asking him to support the party "not on the strength of the party" and to strengthen the strength of what party can and will do the most for them now." The Informer feels that Mr. Harris has struck the right note. It now remains for the Grand Old Party which he represents to do the necessary thing—get in line itself. See to it that the presiding officer of the party throws insults in public and private at the race. Let the party leaders see to it that segregation and discrimination are abolished in the offices where men are supposedly chosen on their ability to work. Let the Good Old Party stop the filibustering which takes place in a House and Senate which, before the elections of this week, we predominantly Republican and let some of theiginal citizens of the party enter the war of that sort will speak louder than all of theActions Mr. Harris and the National Committee. The old order has changed. There must be some help which Negro voters can see and realize. Votes for the party which proves itself friendly to them are expected on that basis. Any other is fundamentally wrong. THE Y M C A CONDEMNS LYNCHING Representatives of the National Y. M. C. A. Council which met recently in Chicago were unanimous in endorsing a resolution against lynching which was presented by delegates from Tennesson and the University of Chicago. The cornerstones of our modern society is the administration of justice through orderly processes of law; the use of private violence for the accomplishment of any purpose is a grave offense against society and the offense is made much graver when it is used in the name of justice. The Y. M. C. A. "reprehended and deplored the lynching outrages which have been occurring throughout the nation in increased numbers this year," and deemed them "murder, not only of human beings but of property," and called for the Committee for the Study of Lynching and to "every effort to create an enlightened sense of public respect for and adherence to law and justice and the substitution of goodwill for violence." In this pronouncement the Y. M. C. A. has run true to form. And the fact that the resolution was proposed by representatives of the Christian philosophy and the court of the Court of the United States it seems to indicate that more and more those young and older Southerners who profess the Christian philosophy are coming to the point of making declarations in behalf of justice which were not made in the name of justice. Their religion more practically and are making it a thing to be lived as well as professed. As an agency for good the work of the Y. M. C. A. cannot be overestimated. It has its critics as true. But they are far in the minority. The Y. M. C. A. is like this going on record as favoring a cessation of the barbarians which have heretofore been committed in the name of civilization, America can well look forward to an enlightened public concession which will, in time, rise in its might and demand their abolition. CENSUS VERSUS CIVILIZATION A generation from now, when the heirs of the present Georgian generations are looking over its history and find that in the same century as they were, the Georgians mob free with their blessing, they spent thousands of dollars of the money of taxpayers in order to prove that a city was larger than another city, they will marvel. Yes, America will finally be included, as far fetched as that reasoning may now seem. Then it will appear to the general public as it now does to The Informer—that civilization is to be preferred to census and that the size of cities will be larger than quantity. Georgia would do well to forget the size of its cities and spend, if there is any money to be spent, in developing a type of civilization there which will do credit to aristocrats who boast of being a land of the free and the home of democracy. WEBSTER In the past week members of the staff of The Informer have visited four of our institutions for higher education: the Prairie View State College, Texas College and Wiley College. It is gratifying to the management that they report very definite progress being made in these colleges. And there is being passed on to the general public here a few facts about each of these colleges, which ought to be of interest to every person involved in the education of Negro youth. Bishop College President Rhoads is now in the second year of his incumbency as the head of Bishop College. In many instances he has turned aside from the course of his degree, the procedure, and followed courses which indicated themselves to him as meeting in this group in this day. One very interesting new thing is the board of boarding Housekeeping Department. In this department the housekeeping character and industry are given the opportunity to live in as nearly a permanent form as possible. The college is the college for the preparation and service of make-up for the doing of the sewing under trained supervision and at a student student about half the number of students about half the would otherwise be. There are possibilities for the advantage of it cannot be obtained and the value of which in the life of the students who get the advantage of it cannot be obtained. Prairie View State College Prairie View State College Prairie View in the life of Texas has never viewed a college in the life of Texas. Prairie View State College is the greatest NEGRO Land-Grant College in America. It has always built education across a land. A very large percentage of women and students of Prairie View are products of Texas and products of Prairie View. Despite current rumors the faculty at Prairie View, man for man in its class. The fact that these rioters remained in the miniature stage was not unusual, but the hoodlums of the white race who started them.
