Those who were the champion spellers of their grades and representatives their grades in the city contest for that honor, among our people, and made a good showing were Sadie Starnes, 3rd grade Franklin school; and Harald Frederick, 5th grade Henry Sabin school. They each made a splendid effort to win the city championship and stood until the most of the contestants were spelled down before they missed. It is gratifying to know that we have those who are struggling to be the best Those who are friendly to a good education should encourage each boy and girl who are attending school as you meet them. It means much to be the best in their school, and more to be the champion of all the schools in the city. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE. The coming election will appeal to the voters of Iowa more than any election since the election of Wm. McKinly the first time. The voters are more forcibly reminded of those times when he sees the price on everything that he and his family consume are almost daily advancing. Who is responsible for this condition? We must concede that the republican party has been in power, and as we watch the action of our party in Congress we see two factions in the party, one is contending that they have redeemed the pledge of the last national convention when they adopted the last tariff law; while the oaher is contending that a part of their paity has ignored the Chiego platform and instead of lowering the tariff they have increased it. Both factions will ask the voters for their approval in the coming primary. One is right while the other is wrong. Who is responsible for this condition? Does the present tariff benefit the masses or the few? Which faction represent your views? If the standpatters, then vote with them, or if the progressives, then vote the entire progressive ticket. Aldrich, Cannon and those who follow them are responsible for the new tariff and the new tariff is responsible for the present condition. The responsibility is back to the voters to send representatives to vote for and with Mr. Cannon, or send those who will join Senators Cummins and Dolliver in their progressive ideas. The responsibility is back to the voters, and may each one do his duty. The new state of Oklahoma has refused her colored citizens the right to vote on the constitutional amendment. Is Mr. Aldrich's and Cannon's organization th republican party. Is not Senators Cummins and Dolliver entitled to the endorsement of the voters of Iowa. Governor Carroll will open his campaign with a speech at Manilla on the 14th. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bell announces the marriage of their daughter, Jessie Maud, to Mr. J. G. Davis Wednesday June 1st. DOLLIVER-CUMMINS MEETING. The great Dolliver and Cummins meeting last Tuesday night at the new Collisseum is the largest and most enthusiastic crowd ever gathered at one time in the walls of any building ni Iowa. If our Collisseum will seat ten thousand people, fully 9,800 people were packed into that mammoth building. The enthusiasm, cheers and applause given each speaker demonstrated that the common people are with them. It was a well dressed and a well behaved audience, eager to catch every word uttered by the two most eloquent orators in the American congress. Each senator seemed to be at his best; each have a different style and type of oratory Dolliver eloquent swept these 10,000 people as by magic. His wit and wisdom which make him the star debator in the senate was seen to an advantage. Cummins, that highly polished, convincing, pathetic and dramatic speaker, set his hearers wild. No greater ovation could have been given the president. They are the men of the hour and are undoubtedly legal beneficiaries to the eloquence of Charles Sumner and James G. Blaine. They came here to speak for the progressive republican cause and the progressive republican candidates, and then each one spoke plainly for Governor Garst, Judge Prouty, Webb Beyers, Smith, Brookhart, John Darrah and all the progressives clear down the line. They are right if we believe in their principle, then we ought to for men to office whom we are in sympathy with, the principle they are fighting for, and will help them push forward the great movement for the common people. For a burn or scald apply Chamberlain's Salve. It will allay the pain almost instantly and quickly heal the injured parts. For sale by all druggists. A. The tablets relieve the ill feeling at once, strengthen the digestive functions, purify the stomach, liver and blood, helping the system to do its work naturally.—Mrs. Rosa Potts, Birmingham, Ala. These tablets are for sale by all drugists. BYSTANDER PUB. CO., Publishers. DES MOINES. IOWA Time to think about a refrigerator soon. Men will not have to wear chante- lers hats anyway. Leaping from midwinter to midsum- mer is pleasant, but perilous. As revolutions go, they are still revolutionary down in Nicaragua. Resort keepers are looking for an extra spring crop of summer boarders. The "third degree" seems to be getting something of a sweating process itself. Try to do a little work. The report that the fish are biting is probably a false alarm. When sailing in such dizzy heights the mercury should continually expect to take a tumble. The woman with a chantecler hat is far from down to date unless she has the new cocorico vell. Just to be on the safe side how would it do to make fun of the comet only after it has passed by? As a spring harbinger the mosquito is welcome. But wait till he toots his little trumpet in the dog days! The man who died of heart disease after drawing a royal flush must have had a string of hard luck before that. It will be hard to conceal a touring ear from the lynx-eyed assessors by poking it up the ventilator of the average fat. A Boston court has decided that a prima donna's name cannot be given to a soup without her permission and, presumably, her price. To cure indigestion, marital infidelity, divorce, and other things, teach our daughters how to cook, wash and mind the baby. Kegs of various descriptions have been responsible for many accidents, but one certain keg of nails in Chicago saved an elevated train. It is true that the sun has been firing off skyrockets, but no man can tell from here whether or not it burned its fingers in the process. According to an eminent entomologist, this is an age of bugs. The line of talk handed out by some college professors makes people think he is right. It is rumored that an automobile trust is in process of organization. Can this be a fendish conspiracy to sky the price of the poor man's automobile? The new comet discovered recently near the path of Halley's comet has been lost. Perhaps it has been driven out of business by the professional fealousy of its bigger rival. A Missouri man is advertising for a wife with "a good, wholesome smile." Ladies who answer the advertisement should be warned that it will be absolutely necessary for them to show him the smile. A steamship in Florida waters had a hard time getting past a school of monsters, 1000 pounds tall, that showed light. It is early in the season, but the sea serpent is not going to be missed. The gymnasium instructor in England land who has made a world's record by swinging a pair of three-pound clubs continuously for 68 hours could have shown as much endurance and done more good by sawing wood. The movement for a sane and safe Fourth of July celebration is under way. It will meet with no favor from the small boy, who wants his constitutional privilege to blow himself up as a burnt offering to the Goddess of Liberty A Chicago man has been fined $25 and costs because he sat for 11 hours on the front steps of the house in front of the one bedded and would not stay away when her mother drove him off with a broom. The age of chivalry may be past, but romance continues occasionally to make a two-base hit. It having been demonstrated that dealers in millinery are able to circumvent the existing law as to plumage for hats, the Audubon societies of New York are supporting a measure before the legislature of that state to prohibit entirely the sale of algrettes. This would put a stop to the commercial warfare on birds, but inasmuch as it would also prevent the holding of 12 people behind a regulation algrettes, the better way would be the circumventing by women of all milliners who violate the law. In the eyes of the census bureau even the tents of the wicked will be considered as dwellings. A route is to be established for the summer from Munich to Oberammergau, where the famous "Passion Play" is to be held this year. A dirigible with a passenger car capable of holding 12 people will be a regular trips. This practical application of aviation opens up an interesting line of query as to what the next decade will bring forth in the way of travel in the air. But how can the average man afford to buy his wife a chanceller bonnet at the present price of poultry? New York is in a state of wrath at being accused by a prominent writer of being the most insolent city in the world, with rude city officials, and advised to learn manners from the south. Considering that the policemen of the city have just been forbidden to clutch iters and wield iters at their pleasure, the accusation of bad manners and lack of courtesy really seems un founded. Des Moines, May 13—Union electric light, telephone and street car linemen employed by the Iowa Telephone company, the Des Moines Electric company and the Des Moines City Railway company have asked a raise in wages ranging from 10 to 15 per cent. An increase of 30 cents a day is asked for linemen and 80 cents a day for foremen. Linemen and foremen now receive $3 a day. After several unsuccessful conferences the linemen employed by the street car company quit work Wednesday pending a settlement of the troubles. The company refused to grant the increase. Negotiations for a settlement are now pending between the telephone and the electric light companies. There are about ninety-five union linemen in Des Moines. The street car company employs only nine. The majority of them are employed by the Iowa Telephone company. The beginning was a slight itching but it grew steadily worse until, when I combed my hair, the scalp became raw and the ends of the comb-teeth would be wet with blood. Most of the time there was an intolerable itching, in a painful, burning way, very much as a bad, raw burn, if deep, will itch to heal. Combining my hair and tear torture. My hair was long and tangled terribly because of the blood and scabs. This continued growing worse and over half my hair fell out. I was in despair, really afraid of becoming totally bald. "Sometimes the pain was so great that, when partially awake, I would scratch the worst places so that my finger-tips would be bloody. I could not sleep well and, after being asleep a short time, that awful stinging pain wake up nearly wild with the pain. A neighbor said it must be salt rheum. Having used Cucurita soap merely as a toilet soap before, I now decided to order a set of the Cucurita Remedies —Cuticura Soap, Ointment and Pills I used them according to directions for perhaps six weeks, then left off, as the disease seemed to be eradicated, but toward spring, eighteen months ago, there was a slight reemergence of the Cuticura treatment once, so had very little trouble. On my scalp I used about one half a cake of Cuticura Ointment and a half a box of Cuticura Ointment in all. The first time I took six or seven bottles of Cuticura Pills and the last time three bottles—nither an expensive or tedious treatment. Since then I have had no scalp trouble of any kind. Standing up, with my hair unbound, it comes to my knees and it had not been there. I should doubtless be wholly bald. "This is a voluntary, unsolicited testimonial and I take pleasure in writing, hoping my experience may help someone else. Miss Lillian Brown, R. F. D. I. Liberty, Me, Oct. 29, 1909." Battle Creek, Mich. CARTAGO DEAD NUMBER 1,500 CITY DESTROYED BY QUAKE LASTING FOUR SECONDS. Survivors Suffer Greatly From Lack of Food—Thousands Are Homeless—Help Needed. San Jose, Costa Rica.—The dead at Cartago number 1,500. The city was destroyed by an earthquake which lasted four seconds. It was a tremulous movement, which followed a few minor shocks. It occurred at seven o'clock Wednesday evening. No one had time to run out of the houses. The railroad and telegraph lines were broken and the electric light wires ran the city in darkness. Thousands ran palletcricket in all directions in an effort to save themselves, leaving behind those under the rulns. Every house and building was destroyed, including four churches and the palace of the American peace court, the gift of Andrew Carnegie. Some Americans are reported to have been killed, but identification is impossible. Many of the wounded died, suffering terribly. Entire families have been wiped out. Rafael Angel Troyo, the Costa Rican poet, is among the dead. The college of the Silesian priests fell while the priests and children were at prayer. Two priests and ten children were killed. No one formidable disaster has occurred in the history of Costa Rica, and perhaps in all Central America. President Hugues Vlquez and President-elect Rachel Moyes are personally in charge of the work of rescue, but there is little hope that those under the ruins can escape. Days must elapse before the real situation can be determined. The monetary losses reach far into the millions. Foreign help is needed badly, and must be prompt if good is to come of it. Thousands are homeless and without food. Fires that followed the destruction of the town added to the horror of the situation, and heavy rains that have fallen since have made the conditions almost unbearable. Iowa Situation. "Under ordinary circumstances it would not be appropriate for senators to enter the republic to terminate the republicion choice for state officers and members of the national house under ordinary conditions, and we are not living under ordinary conditions, and we are not living under ordinary conditions and traitors to our plain duty if we failed to lend what influence we have to the senate, and we would not fields of political liberal will lift up and carry forward the standard which, as best senate of the United States, governs Garrison State, progressive associates upon state state tide, personal friends, and public life can bring them such as it could not gratify me but friendship would be involved, my appearance, unappreciable, unappreciable, Prouty and Byers, and Brookhart, in many a nerve wearing, heart-steering and gratitude, but everlasting esteem and gratitude, but they would be the first to repudiate me and then move for, if I would do them more harm than good. "What then, is it which distinguishes the old fashioned caucus from the old fashioned union that dwarfs all personal relations and that contends with the continent and as pervading as community itself? This is the question I am here asking. What is the inquiry of the hour, touching alike the welfare of the country and the permanence of the republicary party? The American people successfully achieved their political independence; they successfully resisted the executive government; they successfully resisted a foreign invader; they successfully resisted a war; they have successfully developed the richest resources that ever fell under the hand of many communist leaders; they have wealth, that belongs to A. H. any other nation on the face of the earth; they have unimpaired rapidity or geniuses of force on the earth; geniuses unknown to any other land or age; agencies we have, and all these agencies we have, when that might form of modern power to make what it wills. The question is, can we restrict it, regulate it, control it so that it will be reasonable, and thus give to every man his even chance in working out his best ammunition in working all the fruits of his own honest toll? Reason for Action. "With these preliminary suggestions I answer the next question which I know many good men are using why this soil and agitation within the ranks of the republican party? Why does it make any man who is nominated for an office in a republican primary? The answer to the question must discuss differences which exist between the two parties." Corporations in Congress. story business—will take away some of the profits with the help of the many volunteers. Possibly we need such brakes upon the wheels or brakes on the wheels, but we must make the engine which drives the car of humanity triumphantly on toward the future. "I illustrate again the difference between the two elements of the republican government: the state and the river. Lafolette, Bristow, Clapp, Borak and their associates, on the one hand, are as sure as fate itself that Aldrich will view it from the standpoint of the state, and on the other, he lodge in the hands of the great, and these other men will view it from the standpoint of the state, and already accumulated fabulous fortunes, and of making it a little easier for the common man to earn. These are essential differences; they inhere in the training and education of the people, and they educate the liberty of giving but two concrete institutions, which will exemplify the whole object. Provision Repealed Anti-Trust Law. In Harmony for Better Laws. "I am sure you can understand, with this Illustration, how vital it is that Iowa in port to the progressives in a controversy. Every session of congress will devise a plan for the party that we who are marked for the wonder that we are marked for the Washington should want a governor who is in sympathy with what we are trying to understand and an sure that I have given you understand an sure that I have given Warren Carnom nominated for governor. Warren Carnom will work that he would do splendidly at work that he would forging at Washington to know that the voice to aid us in the struggle in which we are constantly engaged, of the house of representatives from this district and the devoted followers of Addrich and of Cannon, of Payne and of Dalzell, and they would have ought to work stranger than Senator Carnom himself, in the midst of one of the derestricted clips that we believe to be vital to the welfare of the party as well as of the Democrats, and Brookhart in the Darrah and Brookhart in the house of representatives instead of Hull, Smith, Kearney." "There is nothing personal in the situation, over the support it provides in over the highest degree legalized for any man to be a United States citizen, or to believe that I ought to remain there, to stand for the nomination of Kennedy. The sooner we realize that this division in the ranks of the republican party appreciate that; it is a movement of the people and not merely to gratify personal reactions of a great and everlasting truth." PLEASANT DAY FOR PRISONER Circumstances Seemed to Combine to Make Unhappy Time for Victim in Stocks. A record on file in the library of the United States congress contains an account of the adventures of a certain Hubbard, who was sentenced in Boston to the jailhouse and indicted in an unwarrantable fit of ill temper. When he had taken his seat for the day there came along a drove of swine, which seemed to cast upon him those leering looks that only a fat pig can bestow. A dog followed, sniffing at the prisoner's feet and making feints—unpleasantly approaching reality—of biting him. Then a cock, mounting to the very top of the stocks, crowed his derision upon the victim to the point where he fell after indulging in unlucky taunts, threw at him felid toadstools and a dead snake. Then an Indian appeared, who, in a drunken rage, stimulated by some fancied injury, rushed at Hubbard with a tomahawk, probably intending nothing worse, however, than to give him a severe fright, which he certainly succeeded in doing. Help came from an unexpected quarer, for at that moment an old bull cawed hearing the red. His attention was attracted by the stocks and with a roar he prepared for a charge. Alarmed in his turn, the savage darted off. The bull made a dash at the stocks and carried away the corner post, but without even grazing the object of his apparent wrath. Whether he was disgusted by the little he had accomplished or his animosity was thus satisfied, he started off, bellowing and shaking his head, much to the relief of the said Hubbard. And then the unfortunate man was left in comparative peace to his own meditations and the cutting sleet of a November day. The people of Kulu are extremely superstitions, and go in extensively for demonolay. Many trees are held to be sacred, and have tiny temples dedicated to them. The demons are popularly supposed to live at the tops of trees, and if a tree falls in such a way that it is possible to pass under it, as is often the case on the mountain sides, every man, before going beneath the trunk will place on it a stick or stone to propilate its guardian spirit. Certain streams are also sacred, and no one is allowed to wash dirty clothes in them. During 1900 some strangers came to the valley and happened to pollute the water of a river in this manner. It chaped to be a year of extraordinary rainfall, and the people implicitly believe that the excessive rain was sent by the outraged "deata" of the stream as a punishment. BASE BALL AT KANSAS CITY.
