LINSON POST AMERICAN LEGION MAKES IMPORTANT EFFORTS
We are very much impressed with the work of the American Legion and the work that it is doing. We note that they are going to have Ninth street near Center street for the purpose of the carnival. Harding, the post commander the Lincoln Post is pushing the question of the war department in which they have secured the assurance of Gov. Kendall's backing. The Lincoln Post in re-affirming the war department received the following:
"The organization of combat units of cotton is primarily entered. It is the policy of the war department in Eighteenth National Guard division, but request the states to provide a number of such units will be favorably considered. They will all be classed as a national number of such units will be combined into a division which may be considered the perpetuation one of the world's

Mutilated Corpses of Five Negroes Dug From Shallow Graves on Prisoner's Plantation.
Three Sons of Planter, Accused of Ordering the Killings, Are Also Arrested.
Department of Justice Agents Believe Two More Were Slain and Thrown into River.
Atlanta, Ga., March 26—The bodies of five Negroes were disinterred on the Jasper county plantation of John Williams by Department of Justice agents, led by Clyde Manning, a Negro who was employed by Williams, the plantation has confessed that he aided Williams in the killing of the Negroes. Another body was taken from the Alcovy river. The bodies found today brought the total discovered in the peonage investigation in Jasper county up to nine, been there several weeks ago in the Yellow river, chained and weighed down with rocks. The Department of Justice agents announced tonight that they would continue the search for two more bodies, said by Manning to have been there chained into the Yellow river. The body taken from the Alcovy river had been weighed down and chained as were those taken from the Yellow river. Of the five dug from the shallow graves, the heads of four had been crushed with an ax or some similar instrument. The officers, said, had been shot to death. Williams is in jail on a state warrant, charging murder and his three sons, Julius, Hayler and Marvin, were arrested today.
Manning was taken to the Williams plantation to testify in his alleged confession that he himself, had killed four Negroes and aided in the death of others at the direction of Williams. While the search was being made the Jackson company of the Georgia National Guard was held under arms ready to go to the scene in case opposition to the search was successful. The Department of Justice agents.
Williams denied any part in the deaths of the Negroes and declared that an old family feud had resulted in a conspiracy to bring about his arrest. The arrests of three Negroes were taken from the Yellow river. Manning, who was held as a witness, confessed, according to the police, soon after being put in jail that eleven Negroes in all had been killed in a plantae. The murdered men were all employed by Williams, he is alleged to have said, and were put out of the way
because they threatened, on account of ill treatment and overwork, to run away and inform the authorities that Williams was violating the peonage law.
Negro Speaker In New Jersey House
Crocker"Y" Over The Top
THE SINGLE STANDARD
A single standard for men and women alike, in matters moral as well as civil and political, is a condition that many have predicted would never maintain until the dawn of the Millennium; and they even cite the Great Apostle as authority on the subject.
The writer, however, vent ures the opinion that if Paul were writing to Timothy today he would not say "Let women learn in silence with all subjection."
In Paul's day every woman was a slave to some man, her own father or a husband whom he had selected for her, often without having even consulted her preference in the matter.
She did not own her own body and hardly, her own soul; for the man not only answered in court for her trespasses against other men; but also offered sacrifice upon the altar for sins against God.
Today she may own not only her soul and body but any other property a man may own.
She may sue and be sued in the courts and in our State she may vote and hold any office but one.
During the past term and a half of the Polk County District Court, nearly a hundred women have been called as jurors and more than a dozen have served as foremen of juries.
Today the Women's Christian Temperance Union of our State is lobbying for the passage of a bill in our legislature that will make Iowa the first State in the Union to adopt a single standard of morality by making women who are responsible for the moral downfall of young men punishable criminally just as are men who cause the moral downfall of young women.
If this is any indication of the progress of the night, then surely, "the morning cometh."
New York, March 26—Henry Al Lippe, the well known manager, will handle the affairs of Jack Johnson when the Negro fighter succeeds in obtaining his release from Leavenworth prison. Lippe received a letter from the former heavyweight champion asking him if he would manage his affairs and try to arrange a match with any of the big fellows. Lippe, who has been a friend of Johnson's for many years, immediately agreed and is now trying to find an opponent for Li'l Arthah, It has been suggested that Fred Fulton is the man Lippe has in mind to meet Johnson. Fulton has never been adverse to meeting colored boxers.
In the letter to Lippe, the former champion of the world says he is going to return to the ring, that he is in better condition today than he ever has been.
"I can beat all the Dempseys that ever put on the gloves. As for Wills and the rest of them, I can take them all and finish up strong enough to take on a dozen more of the same kind that have been masquerading around as boxers," he wrote. "I am filled with power and strength, not dope. If I get any stronger I'm liable to bust. I am just like TNT and ready for the time to put the fuse to it and let the public see what I can do. I cannot see Jack Dempsey as a champion."
No Color Line Drawn By Carpentier Th Champion
Paris, March 28.—Georges Carpentier will never draw the color line if he wins the world's championship and is challenged by a Negro boxer.
Carpenter made this stand known to friends here recently, it became known today, in discussing the scrapping merits of Harry Wills, the American Negro, tonted as a contender for the world's title.
"For many reasons I would not naturally choose Negro fighters as opponents," said Carpentier. "But if I win the title and Wills or any other Negro challenges me, I'll take him on. Then I can claim the title as champion of all classes and all colors."
Washington, March 30.—From selling newspapers in the streets of a big city to the chaplaincy of the National House of Representatives is a big jump in a life-time but that is what the Rev. Dr. James Shea Montgomery has accomplished. His recent election as the chaplain of the national lower house is a culminating point in the career of one of the best known Methodists in the country. Dr. Montgomery has served pastorates in Minneapolis, Minn., Denver, Colo., and at the Metropolitan church and Calvary Methodist church in this city. His appointment is a very popular one.
U.S. To Honor Hero Nov.11
President Harding has decided that the official honors to the American unknown soldier will be held on Nov. 11, 1921, the anniversary of Armistice day, at the National Cemetery at Arlington, Va. On that occasion the unknown soldiers will be buried with the highest official honors, in the presence of President Harding, Secretary Weeks, Secretary Denby, other members of the cabinet, members of the diplomatic corps, and in all probability representatives from the principal foreign nations. The purpose of the burial of the unknown soldier will be to pay the highest official tribute to the unknown American soldiers who lost their lives in the World War. There are about 1,600 American soldiers who gave their lives for their country and whose identity has not been established.

Negro Prisoners Severely Lashed
Wilmington, Del., March 26.—At New Castle county workhouse today four Négroes felt the sting of the Delaware whipping post law. Those whipped were: Warner Lewis, convicted of larceny and sentenced to one year in prison and twenty lashes; Leonard Barrett, highway robbery, ten years and forty lashes, and John Richardson and Horace Archie, highway robbery, ten years and forty lashes each.
This total of 140 lashes was the largest imposed at the whipping post in this county for many years.
post in this county for many years. The whippings were administered by Warden Plummer of the workhouse and the lashes were but lightly applied as a vigorous application of the nine-thonged "cat" would cut a man's back into ribbons in the administration of a dozen or more blows. The backs of the victims were marked with slight discoloration as the result of the flagellation, but only by occasional finching did they give evidence of physical suffering. The whippings were public and were witnessed by about a hundred persons.
City Not To Blame For Bad Sidewalks
The city isn't liable for damages when injuries are received because of imperfect sidewalks, Judge Sellers ruled yesterday in the case of Mrs. L. T. Griffith vs. the city of Des Moines.
An unusually large number of such cases have come before the attention of the city council this winter an upon advice of the legal department, claims have been denied. The case of Mrs. Griffith is the first one to have been carried to the courts.
Mrs. Griffith stepped in a hole in the sidewalk on Riegart street early in the winter and her fall resulted in injuries for which she claimed $1,000 damages.

First I met the ladies of Jackson. The lady very cordial reception for me in one of my classes. Interest is very enthusiastic there as manifested by the three hundred ladies who met me. I found there work developing along many lines. For instance: Both of the Parent Teachers Associations were having all the school children examined by physicians, according to child welfare work.
Another set of ladies had purchased a beautiful Y. W. C. A. building, on which they had paid $1,600,000. The civic department of the city federation was splendid leadership of Mrs. U. J. Wadley, Mrs. J. Jackson college had received the cooperation of the city counsel to beautify the colored cemetery.
Still another club had affected a clinic for the treatment of venereal diseases. The club also had another department which was responsible for including registration and so on, and many other activities along the lines of charities.
the clubs represented in Jackson were the Terrell, Violet Sewing Circle, the Emory, Emory Center, the Tarout Teacher Association, the Y. W. College, the affiliated missionary societies of the churches and the City Federation. My next visit was at Vicksburg, where I found the same enthusiastic dedication to the work of a very royal reception was given me. Among the many good things which these ladies were doing and had done was a beautiful home sighted on one of the streets of Vicksburg for the benefit of the old people, whom she was formerly connected with the State Federation, but these ladies were so energetic that they paid for it themselves through the leadership of Mrs. H. H. H. and have beautified it and make it a very comfortable and attractive place for the dear old people, and they do not owe a dollar on it at the present time.

Posse Hunts Negro
Shreveport, La., March 26—Hunted by a posse of 500 citizens a Negro, is surrounded in a wood near Fullerton, La., following an attack on a young married woman early today. The attack occurred near Leesville while the young woman was walking along a road en route from Rose Pine to visit her father. She was beaten insensible.

I may have one and they expect to equip it with all the paraphernalia necessary for each existing club has also established a free clinic for the treatment of venereal diseases for our people.
The clubs represented here were the Carmel, the Marsh-Nell, the Women's Christian Union club.
Leaving here I visited Port Gibson, where they had no club activities, and was able to arouse their interest to the extent that a Parent Teacher Association was formed with the object of raising funds for a new school building which was needed very badly in this town.
My next stop was at Alcorn, where I again received a very hearty welcome as at other places with our genial Mrs. Rowan, her husband and staff of coworkers. My first meeting was with a large number of young school girls, who attended the college, but little in the way. I met the staff of Friendship girls. I affected an organization among them which had for its main purpose community work. They were divided into four divisions one division for the little town of Rodney; another for Westside; another for the community war for the college. All of them to carry on extension work among the sick and in these various communities endeavor to enlighten them along household duties, to relieve them in suffering and in various other ways. At night I also addressed the Aimwell school of the composed of the lady teachers and the professor's wives, and besides the study of folklore and other important pursuits, they also have a scholarship loan fund which helps worthy students through college. From Alcorn I went to the beautiful town of Bristol and some very progressive and intelligent people, and here again I met a very warm reception. I found the ladies of the Social Literary and Industrial club very active in raising funds for another old folks home with four lots and two small houses on the street. I hoped to pay for this and then tear down these two small houses and put up a suitable building for an old folks home.
From here my next stop was at Columbia, where there were no club activities at all, but again I was able to awaken interest to the extent of organizing a Mother's club, with the aim of a new school building, and community betterment.

As we enter the year 1821 it is instructive to glance back a century and see what was happening in 1821. There was a congress of great powers that year which, like the recent one at Geneva, did not include the United States—but for different reasons. In that year it met at Laibach in Austria, and its principal action was the determination to suppress the liberal movement in Italy, Austrian armies invaded Piedmont and Naples and speedily crushed the revolutionary movement. The leaders of the popular party were shot or imprisoned.
There was a great deal of political unrest in 1821, in both the old world and the new. In that year Brazil rebelled against the Portuguese rule; and Mexico, Peru and Ecuador against the Spaniards. All achieved their independence.
In Europe, Greece arose against Turkey. The results were very different from those obtained in the recent great war. Greek settlements on the Bosporus were wiped out; the patriarch of Constantinople, head of the Greek church, was hanged, and the New Greek residents of Constantinople were traughed. Russia was to join in the war on the side of the Greeks but was restrained by England and by the advice of Metternich, the shrewd premier of Austria.
Among the noted deaths of 1821 was that of Napoleon, who expired at St. Helena, May 5. Queen Caroline of England died and there were serious riots at her funeral. John Keats, the great English poet, also died this year.
In the United States James Monroe, born in Norcross, was president following "the era of good feeling." Arrangements were made to open up Liberia as a Negro colony for freedmen. Amherst college was founded.

The Way It Appears To Me
This is a critical situation in our lives. What is done politically in the near future to determine our status in America will shape the destiny for years to come. True, we are not without leaders but, so many of our leaders are office seekers. Of course with us "office seeker" and "leader" have become synonymous. Of course holding office is not to be depressed, but in a laudable aim of any citizens. When most of our leaders get office they fail to use it as a means to make safe the rights and privileges of the masses. The past shows that many of our leaders held high and influential offices, while being jim-crowed, disfranchised, etc. What did their influence amount to with "the powers that be" so far as we are concerned, during these years the constitution was nullified? Under the old leadership we have seen the race segregated, jim-crowed, and in fact, striped of almost every right as a citizen; even our voting strength cut down when our amount of votes in the national council was reduced, which have allaliances all the same to judge leadership by the things accomplished we will denounce it a failure. Of course we want to hold office, and we must; we need leaders little and big; but the clarion call of the hour is for a leader that will rise to the dignity of a statesman like Fred Douglass and master the critical situation of the times, do something to rid America of the present form of slavery, just as Douglass did chattel slavery, surely out of twelve million of us, there must come a leader with a broad vision of service to his fellowmen.
Everywhere there can be found know-all leaders. Get on the street, stop any colored man, ask him what should the Negro do. I venture to say that nine out of ten will say The Negro do not do this and that. "The colored man is not a slave," he says. "The colored man will be his prefered as a leader. Without a doubt every one will have a different choice, and not a majority for anyone. Would it not be wonderful to be "Honest-to-goodness" followers! Out of good followers come good leaders.
It is humorous to observe that Dr. Moton and others in the south are quoted as saying: "The Negro race has advanced farther than any similar number of colored people anywhere on the globe because it has had the privilege of coming in contact with the white people of the south" or "ToT the southern white people we owe our language, religion and all we have learned and all we have advanced in civilization" or "No southern colored man wants social equality..." Others north and east crying: "Moton may not wish social equality, but there are millions of colored people who do desire Social equality means 'equality in the collective body compass of a community, especially when considered as subjects of civil government.' Here are some of the definitions of 'equal'; of the same degrees with another or each other; uniform in condition or action; of just proportion or relation; equitable, just, impartial, exact; of the same importance and concern; not disintinguished by any ground or preference.
Social equality means the right to vote, the right to equal; and identical accommodations on common carriers, the right to service in public places of refreshment and amusement; the right to residence anywhere one able to buy or rent a home, the right to attend the nearest public school, the right to a legal trial when charged with crime, and every other right which citizenship in a republic carries with it."
Both are for the same thing but, there is one faction that does not understand the circumstances under which the other has to labor. It is true when the southern educator says education is colored youth and he will be a better laborer than charged with crime, and every other right which citizenship in a republic carries with it."

It is true when the southern educator says education is colored youth and he will be a better laborer than charged with crime, and every other right which citizenship in a republic carries with it."
The clarion call is—Give us men to match our mountains, men to match our plains, men with empires in their brains and new eras in their purposes.

Tenth and Park streets, Bv. B. F. White, pastor.
Naming the chill which gave the air an unpleasant sharpness on Easter Sunday there were a warmth and ardor in the temper of things at Union which was indeed gratifying. The service was the membership augmented by a goodly number of visitors, all of whom in mind and spirit seemed to have been in complete harmony with the profound siggure that the membership felt assured that it meant much to all.
The exercises of the church school which followed the morning service attracted an unusual number of parents to witness the Easter program on which the church was based. An interesting and instructive program was executed by the little folks.
The Christian Endeavor with Mr. McCarthy leading her work and helpful meeting. We note with interest a growing interest in this very important part of the church program. ST, PAUL A, M. E, SUNDAY
1285 Our Easter program was carried out in full to the delight of all present.
Every detail of the program reflected to the credit of those who trained the children, and arranged the program. We wish to thank all who contributed to its success. About two hundred and fifty new clothes and ruddy cheeks of the children showed surprising signs of comfortable living, notwithstanding the crisis through which labor is passing. We have just closed one of the most auspicious schools. We had in many respects. Our average attendance at Sunday school for the quarter just ended was one hundred and twenty. Average attendance at teacher's meeting twelve. Twelve equals one-third of our entire class of officers and teachers, of our teachers, of our students, to make it almost impossible for them to be present every Friday evening. Let's remember Easter and keep smiling. Lesson I—The Christian living with others, Romans 1:1, 2:9-21. Golden text—As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise, Luke 6:31.
