(By A. N. P.)
Knoxville, Tenn., June 23.—Requests for protection of
the Negroes of Knoxville from actions of the proposed Klu
Klux Klan to be organized in Knoxville as a subsidiary
organization of the national organization of white citizens,
was made last Tuesday before the city commission. J. L.
Carey, a colored teacher in Knoxville College, made a speech
and asked that "in view of the splendid relation in Knoxville of the whites and Negroes" that the commission refuse
a charter to the proposed organization. Mayor Neal answered the man by stating that he did not know whether the organization would apply for a city charter, but that the commission could not take steps to prevent the issuing of a charter.

NEGRO ACTOR AWARDED THE SPRINGARN MEDAL By The Associated Press.
New York, June 21.—Charlie Gilpin, Negro actor, has been awarded the Spingarn medal, given each year to the man or woman of African descent and of American citizenship who shall have made the highest achievement during the preceding year in any field of elevated or honorable human endeavor.
The medal is donated by J. E. Spingarn, treasurer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
The Twenty-fifth Annual Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias of N. A., S. A., E., A., A. and A., jurisdiction of Iowa and the Sixth Annual Grand Court Order of Calanthe will hold in the city of Des Moines, beginning June 28th and continue in session three days or until all business has been transacted.
The Endowment Board of the Grand Lodge will hold its session Monday, June 27th in the Trades and Labor Temple, 110 Sixth avenue.
On Tuesday the Grand Lodge and Grand Court degrees' will be conferred and a grand reception will be given to all grand lodge officers and delegates at St. Paul's A. M. E. church, preceded by a short program at 7:30 p. m.
Wednesday—"Damon and Pythias" in five acts will be presented at the Thursday, election of officers followed with their installation. Grand street Auditorium at 8:15 p. m.
The Standard Loan & Realty Co., a new organization recently incorporated is now doing business. The organization is equipped to lend money for security on real or personal property. It is also composed of some real energetic young Negroes and actually looks like it is going to be among one of the best concerns for colored people in the city. Des Moines is a great and wonderful field for business adventures from the standpoint that if a man wants to get ahead and half way tries he can succeed, and if members of other races can succeed in that line Negroes can also.

JUSTICE FOR TOM LEWIS.
Attorneys George H. Woodson and C. O. Holly are representing Tom Lewis who is charged with the murder of Miss Clara Thorsdale and both men say they believe Lewis to be altogether innocent of the crime.
They wish to express their deep appreciation to the three or more colored ministers of the gospel of Des Moines who went to the jail to protest against the inhuman treatment which was shown Lewis and they wish to give notice that Lewis will have his public preliminary trial next Monday morning June 27 at 9 o'clock before Judge T. L. Sellers.
This man is friendless and without any funds and any contribution or donation to help out in this expense and cost will be greatly appreciated. This man's lawful constitutional rights as a human being and a citizen should be protected.
George H. Woodson.
Washington, June 20.—The soldier bonus bill today was favorably reported to the Senate finance committee. The measure was accepted practically as adopted by a subcommittee and embraces five plans for adjusting compensation of veterans ranging from a cash payment of $1 a day for home service and $1.25 for foreign service to aid in acquiring homes.
Its early consideration by the Senate is to be expected.
Consideration of the Sweet bill combining all governmental agencies for the benefit of disabled ex-service men, into a veterans bureau, will be started today by a sub-committee of the Senate Finance Committee. The measure has passed the House.

Fallishing every requirement as American citizens, both in America, Europe and in war and peace we should solely refuse longer to outline the conditions that amount to. Negroes in every state in the Union should form themselves into statewide political organizations in an effort to come to terms for satisfaction and our greater the benefits of all the rights, privileges and blessings which are by law the common attributes of Americans regardless of color, creed or station in every state in the union. New York City, N. E., June 23—Marcus Garvey is the head of the Negro Independent association, which owns the Black Star Line and the hope of which is to make Africa solidly black out of three days. He preaches that hope to his followers. The N. I. A. is branched in the West India Islands and in Panama and Cuba and the like, and is said to have a membership of 4,000,000 Negroes, each of whom is said to pay 1 cent a day. That is $40,000 daily, not to spend of the bond-selling privileges, and it may be that Marcus Garvey really could lend the republic of Liberia the $30,000,000 at a pined, $30,000,000—of which it stands in need.
The United States, however, will probably from the Republic of Liberia $5,000,000. Because if Uncle Sam does not accommodate Liberia to this extent John Bull will. Or if John Bull remains obstinate, which is not at all likely, Marcellus Garvey will be induced. The story is one of international relationships. African west coast affairs, the oil business and the race problem. One might perhaps best take it jointly.

This time from the estate of an quelle. Barfooted, tanned and happy, Garland is leading the life of a farmer here. "Men become great by following their ideals, not by following the lure of wealth. Money kills idealism. Christ preached this. I am a professing Christian."
"A society based on money is the wrong thing," he continued. "All the evils of the world sprang from private possession—from the desires of one man to have more than another. The real things—ideals and ideas—cannot be bought and paid for."
"If I have something others need I will give it to them. And if they have something I need I will take it, but not on a money basis. If I want to eat, I will plant my foodstuff and build an engine to reap them. Then I am producing what I need and not robbing any one."

Why Suffer From Rheumatism?
Do you know that nine out of every ten cases of rheumatism are simply rheumatism of the muscles or chronic rheumatism, neither of which require any internal treatment? The pain may be relieved by applying Chamberlain's Limniture, which makes sleep and rest possible, and that certainly means a great deal to any one afflicted with rheumatism.
Recommends Chamberlain's Tablets.
"Chamberlain's Tablets have been used by my husband and myself off and on for the past five years. When my husband goes away from home he always takes a bottle of them along with him. Whenever I have that heavy feeling after eating, or feel dull and played out, I take one or two of Chamberlain's Tablets and they fix me up fine," writes Mrs. Newton Vreeland, Minoa, N.Y. Take these tablets when troubled with constipation or indigestion and they will do you good.

CHILD SAVING WORK IN ARMENIA TOLD BY AN AMERICAN
Charles V. Vickrey Gives Facts of Near East Relief Program for Orphans.
Charles V. Vickrey, general secretary of the Near East Relief, has returned from a trip of inspection throughout Central Europe and the Near East, and made a report to the trustees of the Near East Relief in which he covers in detail the actual work of child saving now being conducted by the great American relief organization in the Near East. Mr. Vickrey believes that "a few millions of dollars wisely expended at this time in the education of the children of the Near East, in character building and in moulding these young lives, will be worth vastly more to the world
CHARLES V. VICKREY.
than billions of dollars spent later in suppressing international warfare and strife."
Mr. Vickrey considers the need in the Near East and especially in Armenia greater than anywhere else in the world, because, as he says, "In the countries of Central Europe there are going governments which have merely been temporarily impoverished by war. In the Near East, on the other hand, there is no such thing as stable government. The whole fabric of the state has to be created from the beginning, and the innocent and helpless children have to be trained to the responsibilities of future citizenship. Peace in the Near East and, in great measure, throughout the world, will depend very largely on the character of the citizenship of the peoples of the Near East."
Irresistible Appeal of Orphans.
Describing the orphanage work of the Near East Relief in the Armenian Republic. Mr. Vickrey said:
GOITRE Pay When Well
I have an honest, proven remedy for golfers (big neck). It checks the growth of neck, reduces the collapse, stops pain and distress and relieves in a little while. Pay when well. Follow stated advice. Write at DR. ROCK, St. Ft. Rue 277, Minneapolis, MN.

"We have at Alexandropol in the Caucasus, one orphanage where there are approximately 10,000 homeless children, fatherless or motherless, many of them having no known living relative. Some of them do not even know their own names, or the place of their birth. They have shown wonderful recuperative powers, and to see them play their kindergarten or other games under the direction of our American relief workers, one could never believe that they had passed through the years of suffering that most of them have experienced since they, or their parents, were driven from their homes in Central Turkey five years ago.
"For the accommodation of these orphans there are sixty splendid stone buildings, erected as barracks for the Russian army. These buildings are now given to us by the Armenian government for a period of ten years and lend themselves admirably to relief purposes.
