LEWIS' VINDICATION IS LIKELY State Agents and Working Force of Robb's Office Get New Evidence in Thorsdale Murder Case The Woman Tells Not satisfied with the circumstantial evidence against Tom Lewis, Negro, held for the murder, they began an investigation on an almost cold trail, and now have enough evidence to justify them in going ahead with the arrest of the man they have under surveillance. The last links of the case against him were forged Monday night, when a woman with whom he has been living, was questioned. The arrest will throw the entire investigation of the Thorsdale case into a merry tangle. Tom Lewis, Negro hermit, is held for the murder. Grew From Lewis Case The case against the white man was worked up when city detectives obtained a transcript of the evidence against Tom Lewis. Many statements in that evidence would bear investigation, they believed, and they went (By the Associated Negro Press.) CINCINNATI, OHIO, August 11.—Mississippi, with more than half of its population colored, a state notorious in deeds of oppression and acts of violence, has entered upon a new era. The Methodist Episcopal Church, through the Board of Education for Negroes, is the cause, and greater unity and better feeling is the effect. Through this Mthodist Board, of which Dr. I. Garland Pern, is one of the Secretaries, Meridan College and Conservatory, at Meridan, Miss., valued at $350,000.00, has been purchased for the education of colored youth. The transaction represents the largest single property investment ever made in the history of the Board, and also the largest in the country for the benefit of the race. Street Car Scramble It is a fact that either the city council or—the street car company have made a jackass out of Des Moines. They all know the city will "bust if it attempts to handle the transportation with busses. If the city believes the cars can be operated profitably at 5 cents why not rent it for a month and see what's what.—Editor. Rystander. Hampton Chronicle: Des Moines is making itself look mighty cheap in the eyes of the people over the state by its attitude on the street car situation. Des Moines needs that street car system and she needs it badly. The auto bus will not do in a city the size of Des Moines. They might be all right for a backwoods town, but not for the leading city in the middle west—that is the leading city between the Mississippi and the Missouri. Eagle Grove Times: Des Moines may be able to get along without street car service, but we doubt it. State fair time is a poor time to test it out, for Des Moines' benefit, but most of Iowa goes to the fair in jitneys now so it may not make a great deal of difference. into the case with an open mind. The fact that Miss Thorsdale was not raped before her death is thought by detectives to be the most damaging evidence against the white man. Negroes ordinarily are not addicted to the nature of moral crime committed against Miss Thorsdale, they say. Miss Thorsdale was killed on the afternoon of June 2, while returning from the Clara Barton school, where she was employed as a teacher. Johnson Barred From Ring JOHNSON BARRED— PHILADELPHIA, PA., Aug. 6. The proposed bout between Jack Johnson, former champion, and Harry Wills has been barred here. Director of Public Safety Cortelyou declares Johnson cannot box in Philadelphia as long as he holds office. MEXICAN EMBASSY— WASHINGTON, D. C., Aug. 11. The Mexican Embassy today issued a statement denying that the Mexican government wants to arrange a bout between Jack Dempsey, world's heavy weight champion, and Jack Johnson, former titleholder. "Official advices deny the unwarranted report," the announcement stated. Attempts Suicide KEOKUK, IOWA, Aug. 6.—Stacy Johnson, an 11-year-old colored boy, was saved from death by drowning today when a note which he wrote telling of his intention of drowning himself was found, and policemen and the boy's father rushed to the river front and found the lad standing on the se wall in the forebay of Lake Keokuk near the government lock evidently ready to dive in. The boy has been suffering from a heat stroke the father said. This is believed to have been the cause for his attempt at suicide. C. C. Pugh letter in Stuart Herald: Somebody has blundered terribly. In fact there has been serious blundering on both sides and much political polly-fixing has been employed. Des Moines must have the street cars and must have good service. The people are going to have both, why not now? Valley Junction Express: People may as well suppress any prediction of disaster. No company is big enough to be indispensable. It may pain some people to learn that they have been scared worse than hurt. Fairfield Ledger Journal: The people who pack sardines could get some good ideas by watching the crowds jammed into automobiles at Des Moines these days. MRS. ASHBY RETURNS THANKS Buxton, Iowa, August 9, 1921. To the Editor of the Bystander, 7th and Mulberry Sis., Des Moines, Iowa. My Dear Sir: Through the columns of your valuable paper I beg to extend this card of thanks to all the relatives, friends and the many acquaintances who assisted me during the long illness of my dear husband, the late Howard Ashby, and who gave flowers, condolences and their presence and sympathy in connection with the death and funeral. As I am a poor writer, I cannot do more at this time of my deep, humble grief. May God bless you all. (Signed) Mrs. Lizzie Ashby. DES MOINES, IOWA, THURSDAY, AUG.H 1921 ORGANIZATION SAID TO BE UNDER LAWS OF NATIONAL SOCIETY A Ku-Kluk Klan is being organized in Des Moines to operate under the direction of the national organization and on lines similar to those displayed recently in the south. Knowledge that a Ku-Klux band is being recruited in Des Moines was admitted Wednesday by Chief of Police Saunders. "The mere organization of a Ku-Klux will not interest the police," Saunders declared. Must Obey the Law "But if any of them attempt to take the law into their own hands, then they'd better look out for the police." The rapid spread of the Ku-Kluk propaganda and its amazingly rapid growth is being watched closely by the state attorney general's department, it became known Wednesday. Purposes of the Klan No efforts, so far as could be learned, at present are being made either by state or city officials to prevent Ku-Klux organization. The avowed purposes of the Ku-Klux Klan are: Supremacy of the white race. Protection of womanhood. Preservation of the sanctity of the home. Separation of religion and politics. Teaching of the Bible in public schools. Wireless Postal Service Planned WASHINGTON, D. C., Aug. 11.— So successful has been the wireless service carrying market reports for the farmers that a wireless telephone daily bulletin general news service for the country generally is being considered by a commission which was originated by Postmaster General Hays. The plan is to utilize the larger radio stations of the mail service, each about 400 miles apart stretching across the continent. Each station will serve approximately 125,000 square miles. It is proposed to have a certain class of news sent out each day at a specified hour in order that those wishing that kind of news may be prepared to receive it. Individual wireless telephone stations may be established and maintained in homes, places of business, etc., for a very small outlay, estimated at $35 for installation. The Department of Agriculture is co-operating with the Postoffice department in this work. Women Jailers In Kentucky LOUISVILLE, KY., Aug. 8.—Successful candidates in Saturday's primary election in Kentucky included three women, according to dispatches which filtered into Louisville today. Mrs. Belle Napier won the Democratic nomination for jailer of Breathhitt county over ten men, while Mrs. Ida F. Edger was the successful candidate on the same ticket for a like office in Woodford county. Her husbandi John Edger, who preceded her in office, was removed by Gov. Morrow after a mob stormed the Woodford county jail, removed a Negro prisoner and lynched him. GRAND ISLAND, NEB., Aug. 9.—The district organizer of the Nebraska Ku-Klux Klan, at present making his headquarters here, today announced what he said are the chief purposes of the "Kavern." These he said, were the supremacy of the white race, protection of womanhood, the sanctity of the home and separation of religion and politics. In addition, he said, the organization would work for the reading of the Bible in public schools. laged in the subscription in substance U.S.A. Represented By DuBois And White (By the Associated Negro Press.) NEW YORK, N. Y., Aug. 11.—Dr. W. E. B. Dubois, editor of the Crisis, and Walter F. White, sailed Saturday, August 6, on the Holland-American Line steamship Ryndam, to take part in the Pan-African Congress to be held in London, Paris and Brussels. Dr. Dubois is secretary of the Congress, which is the second of its kind, the first having been held in Paris in 1919 with 56 delegates representing 16 countries. Before sailing, Dr. Dubois gave out the following statement concerning the Pan-African Congress: "The Pan-African Congress is not a scheme of migration either to Africa or elsewhere. It is not a project of veiled or open war or conquest. It is not based on revolution or race hatred. It seeks knowledge and action through law. It believes in the equality of men and races but it seeks to realize this through education and opportunity and periodic conference. "The world is unizing, whether by League of Nations, of Disarmament Conference or Peave Congress. Sooner or later the Race and Color Problems must be faced. The Pan-African Congress can prepare the way for this by uniting effort, clarifying ideas, collecting facts, and presenting to the modern world clear, intelligent and carefully considered demands." Actual Slavery In Africa NEW YORK, July 22.—Slavery is about to be legalized in Portuguese Africa, according to The Nation. The Portugese government has "granted the Mozambique Company, a commercial concern, absolute power over 65,000 square miles of territory in East Africa, a district larger than England and Wales combined, with a population of over 300,000. The Nation, for July 27th, publishes the text of the law for conscription of labor, which will probably be, among other things, acted on soon. It provides that Negroes can be forced to work for 24 cents a month, and punished if they do not work, even if they cannot find employment. Foreign missionary work has been prohibited. Dr. Proctor Impressed Audience Procter, of New Yorkfi a daring leader of the Negro race, spoke at the Congregational church here last night. His subject was the "Amagedeon" of the Race. Dr. Procter's speech here was characterized as one of the best we ever heard. Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota Baptist Association COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA., Aug. 9.—The Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota Association will meet with the Tabernacle Baptist churches of this city August 23 to 28, 1921. Those coming on the Illinois Central or the Chicago and Northwestern are only two blocks from the church, and those coming on other lines will take the Omaha street car and get off on 14th street and Avenue A. Meal tickets and badges will be two dollars and fifty cents. Church located on corner of 14th street and Avenue A. Phone 4296, Rev. Jackson. TEXARKANA, ARK., Aug. 11.—Denial that recent letters of warning received by Texarkana citizens, including notices purporting to have been sent by the Ku Klux Klan to managers of all local hotels instructing them to rid their places of Negro porters, were the work of the about 11 o'clock last night, but persed quickly when it was disc NEGROES DRIVEN FROM DIXON, ILL. DIXON, HLL., Aug. 6.—Negroves were driven from Dixon late last night by a mob of 200 white men of this city and Polo. Though the exodus was unaccompanied by violence, a severe rainstorm which broke early in the morning is thought to have prevented serious trouble. A band of eight unidentified white men set fire to a Negro-White resort What's The Idea President? (By the Associated Negro Press.) WASHINGTON, D. C., August 11. There is coming to The Associated Negro Press serious and solicitous inquiries from all over the United States of America. Some are pathetic, some tragic and others fraught with grave forebodings. The tenor of the whole string of inquiries may be summed up in the following chorus: "Where Do We Go From Here?" Quotation from a typical letter is given. The letter quoted is from one of the most intelligent and progressive members of the race, a woman 6f high social and business standing, and one entirely independent of political preferment, but active in political progress. The letter says: "Just what is wrong with the President? If what I read in the colored papers is true, the party seems quite sure they will never again need our vote. But I guess they think three years is a long time and by the time election rolls around again we will have forgotten all about the 'Lily White' efforts. Well, we will see "Not Right"— Texas Citizen THE KUKLUX KLAN HOUSTON, TEXAS, Aug. 1.—Is it altogether impossible for you to be fair and reasonable about occurrences south of the Mason and Dixon line? Your recent article about t.e. Kukluk Klan was unfair and vicious, and I think the writer of that article must have known it when he wrote it that it is not true that the better element down here approve of the activities of that organization. To be sure, our governor has been silent, and apparently derelict, about it. Unfortunately, Texas is not the only state which can complain of its public officials. I note from the newspaper that Illinois has been having some little difficulty with her governor, to the tune of about $2,000,000. Anything condemnatory that you may say about the Kuklux Klan cannot be too severe, but you are wrong in abusing the entire South for its actions. Y. W. MATHES. OTTUMWA, IA., Aug. 8—George Johnison, 59 years old, a Negro porter at a hotel, was fatally injured late Saturday night when he fell twenty feet down the freight elevator shaft, landing on the cement floor of the basement. He suffered internal injuries from which he died a few hours after the accident. No one was near him at the time he fell, and he was found within a few minutes by employees who heard his groans. The elevator was on the Texarkana klan was contained in a statement received by the Texarkanian today. The statement which bore the signature of Exalted Cyclops Keigcaph, knights of the Ku Klux Klan, offered a reward of $500 "for the arrest and conviction of any person found guilty of posting and mailing the notices purporting to come from this organization." THE BEST Advertising Medium to Reach the Colored People Price Five Cents HERE DRIVEN M DIXON, ILL. Both demonstrations are outgrowths of the murder of William Coffey, world: war veteran, who was shof Monday night after he had been robbed in a Negro resort. Three Negroes, arrested for the crime, have been held to the grand jury and preparations were made to remove them from the local jail. Virginia Lynches Two (By the Associated Negro Press) PETERSBURG, VA., Aug. 11.—One of the two colored men arrested last Wednesday night in connection with the murder of Tingley Emory, postmaster and storekeeper, of Tobacco, Va., Monday, was taken from the Brunswick County, jail at Lawrenceville early in the morning by a mob and lynched. The other Negro was not molested. U. S. A. Makes Black Chapter In Haiti (By the Associated Negro Press) WASHINGTON, D. C., Aug. 11.—American intervention in Haiti and Santo Domingo was described last Wednesday as the "blackest chapter in American history in the Carribbeans," by Oswald G. Villand, of New York, urging a special senate investigation. He spoke for the Union Patriotique of Haiti, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Haiti and Santo Domingo Independence Society, and charged there "was no trouble in Haiti until we went there. Immediate American withdrawal would be a disaster. Mr. Willard told the committee, but military occupation should terminate. The Negroe's Status Editor of the Des Moines Register gets this letter from white-hearted Whiteman: The Negro Status. To the Editor: If the Negro of yesterday had not received the right of franchisement during the civil was days would not our American government be as a man with a paralytic limb? The Negro, I believe, has received more consideration duroing the administration of the republican party than at the other time. Our government cannot reach great heights with ignorance to pull it back any faster than a family can reach a social status who have a strain of delinquency in their blood. I believe the Negro of Iowa, as elsewhere, is striving to prove to the white man his appreciation of the right of franchise. M. M. HUDSON. HARDING • MAY CALL REUNION OF 92ND DIVISION DES MOINES, IA., Aug. 11.—Clar- enice Harding, commander of the Lincoln Post of the American Legion, of this city, is considering calling a reunion of the Ninety-second Division to be held at Camp Dodge in the spring of 1922. Mr. Harding states that there were about five thousand officers and with the entire numbers there were something like 27,000. They were all in training at Camp Dodge. for a beating The mayor's statement came on the heels of announcement in local news-paper advertising for recruits for the order. Who's Who Mrs. Julia Southal and daughter, of Et Dodge, were the guests of their cousin, Mrs. J. C. Watson, 2823 4th street, for the past week. The understanding at the time that the people pledged to the Y. M. C. A. drive that the first payment of $1,000 was to be made on the beautiful lot at the corner of 12th and Crocker st., on August 1, has not been done by the management, because all pledges have not been paid. In order to do this they will have to collect in full. Every pledger should see the person or persons to whom he or she pledged same, as soon as possible. The D. Y. W. Y. K. Mrs. McMillian will be gone for three or four days while Miss MicMillian will spend at least two weeks in Checaigo. Fifteen beggars have called at the Crocker Street Y. M. C. A within the last two weeks for aid. One of the most pathetic stories told by one of them is as follows: "I am from Ohio. Haven't slept in a bed in six weeks. Haven't had anything to eat in three days and haven't worked in five months." This is apparently the case at all charity centers, although the "Y," according to the Secretary's statements is not a charity organization and has no appropriations for jobless, hungry and penniless men. Mrs. Amanda Fowler was taken to her home from Samaritan Hospital. She is much improved in health. Miss Bessie Groves is visiting her parents in Moulton, Iowa. Mrs. F. W. Cousin has gone to Oskaloosa, Iowa and Excelsior Springs, Mo., for her vacation. Rew. W. H. Griffin, of St. Paul A. M. E. Church, has purchased a new Dodge touring car. Mrs. Brown, the originator of this pageant, takes this method of thanking the participants and including Mr. Geo. H. King, who furnished music during the entire performance, and Dr. W. H. Griffin, who aided in making this pageant a success. 1920 Dear Sir: No doubt you will be surprised to receive this letter. But I hope you will recover in time to read it. I'm having such a fine time down here, that I thought I would let you hear a little of it. I only wish you and Mr. Shedd could enjoy some of the parties and motor rides that I'm enjoying. I will be up the latter part of this month. I am enjoying the Bystander now. I am awfully glad you are sending it to me. It is the same as a letter from home. Well I am still having birthdays, would you believe it? Well here's how I am enjoying them. Last Monday, August 8th, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Reasby suggested that we motor to Oskaloosa in their beautiful new Oldmobile, a distance of about 45 miles. I readily consented. We had a very nice time. We returned home about 9 o'clock and when we drove up to my surprise about 35 guests circled around a great bonfire in the yard giving me the Indian war dance. Well, I didn't know what to do, get out or not. But after some coaxing they got me out and informed me that they were celebrating my birthday. It was indeed a happy and lovely surprise and then Miss I. Beard and her friends served a delicious 3 course dinner. She also baked a very large birthday cake, decorated in pink and white, which would have taken first prize at the state fair, so the guests said. Then the best of all was the presentation of presents, which were beautiful and too numerous to mention. Well, I won't tire you out, but will say I am making preparation to move down here for the winter and want you and Charles Shedd to be our guests at Xmas dinner and show you what these good people call a gay time. time.
