For years white men have intimidated, beaten and even murdered inoffensive Negro men who sought to exercise their right of franchise at the ballot box, but the brutal acts of those white men were God-like in comparison with the treatment of our best and most refined women, at the polls, on last Tuesday by the so-called Negro Democrats of Kansas City. Their acts of inhumanity toward the women of their own race, at the several voting places, is beyond description. To have witnessed the outbursts that greeted the poor old white-haired mother, the young wife, the innocent sister, as they approached the polls, would have frozen the blood in the veins of a man of iron. But, thank God, the "day of vengeance" has arrived. Mr. Governor, the presence of these Negroes in this community is not desired. Democratic sluggers, ballot box stuffers, gunmen and denizens of the underworld conducted a carnival of blood and violation of law and order at the election held in Kansas City. They carried out their high-handed outrages without any apparent effort being made by the police, the county marshal or federal officers to interfere. Seldom in the history of Kansas City elections was such lawlessness practiced. Republican judges of elections were compelled to run from the booths to escape the violent tempers of Democratic gunmen; Republican challengers and workers were slugged and intimidated; Republican voters were harrassed and brow-beaten, and in many instances driven from the polls and denied the right to exercise their citizenship; Republican voters who went to the polls in many Democratic precincts in the lower North Side wards, and in the Sixth, Eighth, Ninth and Eleventh wards which were terrorized by Democratic gangs, found that they had been voted by Democrats giving the names of the Republican voters to the judges of election. Police "Can't See." Policemen stood inactively by and when Democrats wanted to add to their crooked work or slug and maim Republicans found it convenient to be absent. Whenever a Democrat thought it necessary to remove Republican workers for their activities on trumped up accusations the policeman was always present to take the innocent Republican to the police station where they were thrown into cells on the filmsy charge of investigation. This carnival of violation of all laws of decency started early. It began by judges delaying voting in Republican precincts and challenging Republican men and women on trivial things. Long lines of voters were handicapped by these tricks, and from the opening to the closing of the polls, the election commissioners were kept busy stopping and discouraging these tactics Anniversary will be tendered A. The warnings of the commissioners, however, were only temporary and as soon as they turned their backs the blockade to Republican voters was resumed to be only winked at by the police. In districts Democratic the conditions were reversed. The lines were kept clear, and the voters encountered no difficulties. NORTH ENDERS ARMED In the North End precincts every Democratic worker was armed with pistols or bludgeons and the judges carried pistols into the voting booths. Election Commissioners Crittenden and Oppenstein made two Democratic judges of election, Henry St. Clair, 1316 Twenty-fourth street, and Thomas W. O'Bannon, 2308 Grove street, in the Fourth precinct of the Eleventh ward, surrendered their pistols. The two commissioners were summoned to this voting precinct, located at Twentieth and Vine streets, on a complaint that the Democrats were delaying the voting and terrorizing Republican voters. After disarming the two Democratic judges Commissioner Oppenstein ordered their arrest by the policeman at the booth. He refused on the excuse that it would be unlawful for him to go into the booth to make the arrests. NEGROES INTIMIDATED Gangs of hoodlums in motor cars rode furiously through the streets of the Eighth, Ninth and Eleventh wards firing pistols and intimidating Negro women and men voters. A bullet fired by these gangs lodged in the left shoulder of W. M. Greene, a Negro, at the mouth of the alley of Twenty-sixth street and Woodland avenue. He was given surigacal treatment at his home, 2604 Woodland. E. J. Bedford, a Negro voter in the -ast Bottoms, was rendered -unconscious by being clubbed. The Eighth ward hoodlum automobile riders made it, their special mission to assail any man seen wearing a Republican badge. Two young men wearing Harding badges were assaulted after they had refused a challenge fro mthe "hoodlums" to remove the Harding buttons. BLACK EYES ABOUND. Throughout the entire day Republican workers came into headquarters with black eyes, swollen faces and cut heads which had been inflicted by Democrats. After having their wounds dressed the workers would return, often to be again attacked and beaten. H. C. Doyle, an attorney, 3645 Central street, and Thomas Jackson, Negro, 2618 Euclid avenue, were arrested at Twenty-fifth street and Brooklyn avenue. Both are Republicans. According to Mr. Doyle, he witnessed a fight between Jackson and a Democratic worker. He attempted to intervene and was arrested. Jackson was also arrested, but the Democratic worker was not even questioned. Mr. Doyle and Jackson were released on $101 bonds. Call Clifton 1982. Jeff Lunch. We send it. A gun squad, the last hope of a faltering political machine, swept through the Negro wards of the city Tuesday shortly before the closing of the polls, spreading terror among the late voters. Driving a motor car, the "terror squad" roamed unmolested throughout the wards that normally return a heavy Republican majority. According to residents of the eleventh ward, crowds of voters at several of the voting places were stamped by shots from thugs in a large black touring car, from which the license tag had been removed. At Twenty-fourth and Olive streets, a small crowd was standing near a moving picture theater when the black car drove to the curb and the occupants began firing into the air. The car then speeded away. Persons waiting for street cars along Vine street report that they were driven from the curb by the speeding car. William W. Green, 43 years old, a Negro hod carrier living at 2604 Woodland avenue, was a victim of this "terror squad." Green has voted shortly after 6 o'clock and was walking on "Twenty-sixth street near Woodland avenue when the car, containing five men, approached rapidly from the east. Green, who is a cripple, barely escaped being run down and as the car passed him one of the men cursed him. Another fired one shot at Green. The bullet struck him in the left shoulder, coming out of his back. As the car drove on the occupants laughed. Green was taken to his home after being given emergency treatment by uhysicians. The wound is not dangerous, according to physicians. Patrolmen from the Flora avenue police station were unable to obtain any clew as to the assailants, they said. URBAN LEAGUE SECRETARY ON JOB. The board of directors of the Community Service Urban League of which Prof. J. R. E. Lee is chairman met Monday November 1st. The feature of the meeting was the appointment of Mr. F. T. Lane as Executive Secretary. He was secured through the efforts of the National Urban League and Mr. T. Arnold Hill, the Western Organizer. Mr. Lane has had splendid training, having graduated from Morehouse College, done special work at Chicago University. For four years he was Activities Secretary of the Wabash Avenue Y. M. C. A., after which he was connected with the staff of the Chicago Urban League. Just prior to coming to Kansas City Mr. Lane was director of Community Service Work in Chicago. The Community Service Urban League still maintains its quarters at the Community Club at Eighteenth and Vine streets. Harris and Mrs. Lena Dallas and daughter of Omaha spent Sunday night in the City. The Mission Society gave an entertainment at Mt. Zion last Saturday night. It was a masked affair under the direction of Mrs. Alice Grant. About two dozen persons came masked and a good time and a success financially was the result. The Revival Meeting closed at Mt. Zion Baptist Church last Thursday night after ten nights' successful meetings. Rev. C. A. Raulston was pleased with his visit here with his friend, Rev H. W. Botts and congregation and elated over the work as complished from earnest labor. About fifteen persons were added to the church; several are for baptism. After services last Thursday night the Young Men's Club served refreshments to the congregation and all enjoyed themselves very much. ...Rev C. A. Raulston left Friday for his home in Lexington, Mo. ...We are glad to have an Undertaker in our midst in the person of Mr. Campbell late of Kansas City. Mr. Campbell will be associated with Mr. H. An unsuccessful attempt was made to assassinate Matthew A. Foster, the Republican candidate for mayor at the municipal election, and Wentworth E. Griffin, election director of the Republicans, last Tuesday. The two men drove out to the Eighth ward in answer to pleadings from Republican workers and officials that they were being overpowered and driven from the election booths by Democratic gun men. While returning in their car east on Eighteenth street, and when near Forest avenue, a shot fro ma pistol attracted the attention of Foster and Griffin. They looked behind just as a bullet imbedded itself in the rear end of the body of their car. Two men were pursuing them in another car with pistols leveled on Foster and Griffin. A second shot rang out, this one being fired by one of the men in the pursuing car. The second bullet went crashing through the right front fender of the Foster and Griffin car, and a third bullet went wild. The men then veered their car into Forest avenue, and driving rapidly south, disappeared. Police Captain T. J. Whalen of the Sixth district was within a block of the shooting and being attracted by the reports of the shots hurried to the scene. No arrests have been made. JOHN W. Green the Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of the five Grand Divisions. It is gotten up in the usual care, accuracy and finish characteristic of Sir Green and reflects great credit not only upon his official force but upon the great fraternity over which he so ably presides. RIGHT WILL WIN. The Sun is not egotistic nor "all swelled up" over the results of the recent election but it does believe it has a right to call attention to the steadfast, loyal and consistent fight it waged for the Republican Party and incidentally the citizenship rights of the men and women of our racial group in America. While other Negro Journals wavered and faltered and in some instances accepted paid political announcements from the Democratic Party the Sun forged ahead hewing straight to the line and refusing to see anything but anoverwhelming Republican victory for last Tuesday, which predictions has been fully verified. While we may be called old fashioned and non-progressive, yet we want justice and fair play for the Negro and we believe it can best be secured through the Republican Party. The Sun has had many calls both from within and without the city complimenting us on the fight we made for Republican principles and we take this means of thanking all those who have called or written us and pledge them than The Sun and its entire staff will always be found fighting the battles of the race and pushing to the front always our young men and women who are trying to make a mark in the race of life. Again we say, thank you, and always remember that eventually RIGHT WILL WIN. What bids fair to be the greatest session in the history of the Colored Teachers' Association will convene in Kansas City November 11-13 under the presidency of Prof. C. G. Williams of Boonville. Such important questions as better pay for teachers, better teachers, better school buildings, better equipments, part time classes, the new constitution for the State, County unit system and a State University for Negroes will command the minds and the attention of the organization. Under the certificate plan, the railroads will grant a one and one-third fare. New York Breaks All Records New York.—With the possible exception of the contest for the governorship, which still is in doubt, Republicans apparently have made a clean sweep in New York state. Returns from 5,586 districts out of 7,308 give Harding 1,498,943. Cox 648,445. If this ratio is maintained, Senator Harding will carry the state by the unprecedented plurality of 1,125,000 over Governor Cox. The largest popular vote previously received by a presidential candidate in the state was 878,070, which Mr. Taft polled in 1908. The previous record plurality was made in 1896 when McKinley led Bryan by 268,325. Governor Smith was leading Nathan R. Miller, Republican gubernatorial nominee, by 6,257 votes when returns from nearly two-thirds of the state had been tabulated. The vote in 4,713 districts was: Smith, 909,965; Miller, 804,708. If these ratios are maintained, Miller will come into New York City with a majority of 384,000 over Smith, while Smith will carry the metropolitan area by 327,960 over Miller. Senator James W. Wadsworth, jr., who was bitterly opposed by organized women suffragists and "dry" leaders because of his votes against suffrage and against prohibition, was leading his Democratic opponent, Lieut. Gov. Harry C. Walker by 323,991 votes. Returns from 2,514 districts out of 7,308 in the state gave Walker 302,580, Wadsworth 535,571. Senator Harding apparently carried every county upstate and every city for which the vote had been tabulated at midnight, except Oswego, which gave Cox a plurality of 319. Dutchess County, in which Hyde Park, the home town of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democratic vice-presidential nominee, is located, gave Harding and Coolidge a plurality of 8,195, or more than two to one, with sixty-two districts still missing. Chicago—The West is clinching the Republican victory in terms as decisive as expressed in the huge avalanche of votes in the East. There will be no upsets this time in California or Washington or Idaho. In fact, practically every state from the Missouri to the Pacific is piling up big majorities for the Republicans and will return an increased number of senators and congressmen to help President-elect Harding in meeting the problems before the nation. East's Verdict Being Confirmed. Four years ago this time the eyes of the nation were on California, awaiting the definite word that would confirm or deny the re-election of Wilson. This morning, however, the returns coming in rarely confirm the verdict of the East against the League of Nations and the Wilson administration. Mouphois, France.—France honored Negro soldier heroes last week by dedicating a monument in honor of the men who fell in the great battles of the late war. Starks.) Learning Economics. It will be noticed that the subject given for discussion is "learning" economics. We chose that because we do not wish to create the idea that we ourselves are seasoned in the study of something that we have only attended recently, only since the World War. It may also be fair to say that only a few of our so-called scholars have called our attention to such an important thing as the science of economics. This being the case, then we have been compelled to rely on our own powers of discovery in seeking a fundamental cause. What we have to say, therefore, comes purely from our individual deductive ability, however poor that may be. We are not so vain as to imagine that we have discovered something "new," but we do believe that our presentation will at least be interesting to our readers. The Cause or Economics. Accustomed as we are to investigating what is immediately before us, it is strange that we have so abjectly ignored the study of that which so vitally affects our material welfare. The very air we breathe, the water that we drink, the food that we eat, the clothes that we wear, or the shelter that we must have, economics touch us in all of these, and more. In fact, so positive is its appeal, so comprehensive its scope that none living may escape its contact in some way. Economics, then, is not only fundamental, but more understandingly is present everywhere. Now Economy is based upon the fundamental fact that we have to eat. That we have to eat to live is a trite truth, but very undeniable. We also have to drink (water). But water is not a fundamental cause of Economy as food is because it is obtainable without the productive enterprise or cultivation of man. That is to say that that which may be secured practically for nothing is not a cause fundamentally, of economy. Food then, is the first necessity that acts upon individuals. If this is true, then there is no question about Economy being built upon this stern compulsory want. We must have food. It is necessary to our existence. We cannot do without it. Upon it hang all the laws and "profits" of existence for us. The necessity of having to eat is accompanied with the almost equally demanding necessities of clothes and shelter. These three things embody the hue and cry of the world. You can't get away from them. They will not down. We have the idea that economy simply means to save, but in a fundamental sense it means to secure, to get. To need first, to get next, to save last, are the three essential elements that perfect the idea of economy. All else pertaining there are dependent clauses. Recapitulation would show here that the Economic is based upon a want, or more scientifically, necessity. It would show that this primary necessity is food. We also showed that the secondary cause of economy was to secure or get the food. Now to get food men have to work in some way. This natural conclusion brings us to The Industrial. Now since men have got to work in order to eat, this secondary necessity produces the problems of industry, of which we have a wonderful experience! On down the line man's stomach has been the whip which industry wields to make him a slave. It is hard but it is true. We try to avoid it, especially the sterner phases, and many succeed, but most of mankind have to work on and on that they may continue to eat. The alternative of not working is misery, starvation or death. So men work because they have to work or starve. Since everyone, more or less, have to work, this creates the great world of workers or industrial units, all seeking the same sustenance of life. In doing this most natural thing these units are bound to come in contact one with the other. They are traveling the same road—they are thus bound to meet. In looking for the same thing they are bound to become interested in one another. They can't get away from it. It matters not starring Buck Jones—a very superior drama. whether one is selfish, one is greedy, one is weak, one is strong, or that one is black or one is white, all are looking for the same thing. Necessity has brought them together in the same channel. Industrial necessity, if you please. This being true, then out of this personal industrial contact the social problem is born. Think of it, what is properly called society starts, not from the high and mighty notions of men, but down in the netherlands of industry. Not from the arts and graces, but from the cold fact of necessity. Men are bound to come in contact where their interest is the same. Here, then, is the basis for the claim of social equality. That there can be any inequality other than the varying ability of the individual units is beyond our understanding. But the world is surfeited with ideas of distinction of birth, superiority of race, supremacy of white and so on. Yet here the question of equality so far as Truth is concerned is settled forever. Men may scorn or forget the Biblical injunction that God hath made the nations of the earth of one blood, but the hard knocks that the economic impose upon the greater portion of mankind will perpetually remind all of their humanity, their oneness of impulse even though they are blinded by competitive strife which engenders jealousy, hate, murder and death. Ah, how history has shown us by the remotest ages that the compulsion of work has always inspired the social among men! Now while the social is surely born out of the industrial we do not claim by any means that it is confined there. In this study we are rather looking for fundamental causes rather than any effects. We want to learn why men are equal or why they are not equal. We have already learned that the ECANOMIC is imposed upon men by nature. That the INDUSTRIAL automatically grows out of the economic, and that the SOCIAL is the inevitable result of the contact of the industrial units, units whose interest is essentially the same. Here we might reasonably end the discussion, as we have showed the natural stages of economic evolution. But this universal group of men we are discussion have minds and hearts as well as stomachs. These, too, make their peculiar demands, and while they are stronger in some ways than the goad of the economic, they are certainly less constant. Anyhow, after the industrial or social units have realized that their interest is the same, it is the restless human mind and heart that creates the multiplicity of problems foreign to the economic. It is these problems that men claim it necessitates POLITY to adjust in the larger interest of humanity. And so through the restlessness of the human mind and heart, and not necessarily out of the social contact, comes The Political. That which hard necessity controls and develops ceases with the compelled social contact. There is in the Scriptures a saying that God in the beginning made man upright, but he (man) has sought out many inventions. Now Politics is one of the necessities in the manner or sense that the industrial or social is that grow out of the economic. The most pertinent question ever asked by a social unit is put in the Bible: "WHO MADE THEE A RULER OVER US?" While the most abject AND MISERABLE GROUP of social units were those (found in the same reference) who said: "GIVE US A KING TO RULE OVER US!" They say that Politics is the science of good government, but it has not yet been demonstrated in governing any body politic of the world.
