METROPOLIS WEEKLY GAZETTE SOLDIERS SAVE LOCKETT 15 TO 25 NEGROES DROWNED IN "JIM GROW CARS." MARTIAL LAW DECLARED AT LEXINGTON, KY. Soldiers Rout Crowds Storming Courthouse and Save Prisoner Just Sentenced to Die for Brutal Murder of Girl. Lexington, Ky., Feb. 9 — Four persons were killed and fifteen injured here today when a mob, intent upon lynching Wm. Lockett, a Negro, who confessed to the murder of 10-year old Gegeva Hardman, charged the Courthouse during Lockett's trial and was fired upon by police and state troops. While the mob, the ringleaders of what we loved a rope, was attempting to get into the Courthouse to get Lockett, a jury found him guilty of first degree murder and a minute or two later the Negro was sentenced to die in the electric chair March 11. Courthouse Stormed The mob formed near the court-house during the trial and suddenly made a rush for entrance. The state troops, some of them wearing overseas helmets, attempted to hold back the crowd by a show of arms, but failed, then the troopers resorted to the use of rifles and machine gun, which had been mounted at the entrance. After several rounds of shots, the mob withdrew, many of their number lying in the street dead and injured. Lockett, is safe now in Eddyville penitentiary where he awaits death. The Gazette congratulates the sieps taken by the Governor, Adj't. General and all who upheld the law in this. The crime of lynching will be knocked out if the leaders do their duty. We are sorry that such things occur, but since they do every man is entitled to a trial, and after the court has decided, let him abide by the law. Kevil, Ky. Miss Eva Turner, was the guest of Miss Ethelene Dance Monday. Mr. Henry Holland, who is dangerously ill is reported no better. Mr. Emery Turner, was the guest of Thos. Dismukes, Sunday. The little son of Mr. and Mrs Dance is much better this week. Mr. Wess Dance, is improving. Henderson Young, was the guest of Mrs. Hartense Frazier, Sunday. There will be a birthday party given Feb. 16, 1920 at the residence of Mrs. Susan Majors, in honor of Mr. T. Gohlson. Mukes Cox, is dangerously ill; not expected to recover. Mr. James Allen, of Grahamville, Ky., has purchased 35 more acres of land near the Metropolis lake. The farmers of Ky. are expecting a high price for their tobacco this year. Ethelene Dance. Rev. A. Lovelace, in School. Nashville Tenn., Nov. 21. Editor of the Gazette: Please allow me through the columns of your worthy paper, that I am in the city and according to previous plans am attending the National Baptist Theological school (unincorporated convention, every day. The School according to the advertisement of the trustees threw open its doors last Monday the 17th. A splendid program was arranged and great enthusiasm prevailed and after more than a quarter of a century of planning on the part of the Baptist they are enabled to operate the greatest Negro Baptist School in all the world. These buildings are ideal in every department. Mt Olive Baptist Association of Illinois will receive the credit of being here. I was greatly encouraged by our wide-awake moderator Rev. J B. McCrary, who is a trustee for this school. I trust that each pastor will take a special collection at once so as to reach me here by the 1st of Dec., or of each month. Any amount will be thankfully received and the same reported in the columns of the paper. I wish to thank the pastor Rev Thos. Morris, and the Antioch Baptist church, Metropolis; Macedonia Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant Baptist church, and Mr. C. V. Parker (white) Harrisburg, for the financial assistance and will try to make good. I am yours for the defense of the gospel. Rev. A. Lovelace In care of Rev. J. L. Harding. Let each church of this district lift a collection at once and forward same to Rev. A Lovelace, Nashville, Tenn. in care of Rev. J. L. Harding. Sec'y.-Treasurer. Rev. H. A. Boyd, Member of the National Baptist Publishing Board, Nashville, Tenn., who was declared recently by the Chancery Court, to be one of the original Board member.s He has been selected a delegate to National S. S. Congress next June to Japan. A good selection MOTTO: "HEW TO THE LINE, LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY." Mrs. Della Lyons Mrs. Della Lyons, wife of Tertell Lyons, died in Chicago, January 31, 1920; age nineteen years nine months and four days. Her illness was of short duration. She was converted in St. Paul A. M. E. church, Metropolis, during the pastorate of Rev. Stone, her membership remained at Metropolis until she moved to Chicago where she continued in the faith and rendered service in the cause of the Master. Her passing was peaceful as the following testimony reveals. She prayed continually during her illness and stated to her husband, "I am standing on the banks of the river Jordan and the way is so clear and bright; I am waiting on the Lord." Calling for the two children she pressed them to her tips and passed away waving her hand as a last good-bye. She leaves a husband, father, mother, two children and many relatives to mourn her illness. The funeral was attended from the A. M. E. church Thursday afternoon. Revs. S. B. Jones, and Thos. Morris, officiated. Walker's Indigestian Cure Rev. J. B. McCrary is agent for Dr. Walker's Sure cure for Indi- gestion and Dyspepsia. 50c and $1.00 bottles. $1.10 by mail. We can cheerfully recommend it. Centralia. Ill I wish to say a few words in regards to the organization of another association in this district. I speak for myself, and church. I take no side whatever in promoting anything that will cause an upheaval in the Baptist family. I cannot see any need whatever for a third association in this small Obituary. James Everett Hodge, youngest son of Robt. and Caroline Hodge, was born at Salem, Livingston, Co. Ky. Oct 8, 1888, departed this life Feb 3, 1920; age 31 yrs. 3 mo. 25 days, after a long illness which he bore with patience. Rev. Jones, came and prayed with him in the beginning of his illness and after that he could often be heard singing the old Hymn. Listen, young friends while I relate. The danger you are in, Your sparkling eyes must close in death. And nevermore be seen, and also, "Lord have mercy on us" He asked Rev. Barnett, to sing for him which he did and also prayed, and when he was asked if he was praying, would say I am trying to pray. He called his sister Lucinda to his bed one morning, saying he felt better than he ever felt in his life and everything looked so bright. He leaves to mourn their loss father, three brothers, three sisters, one niece and a host of relatives and friends. district. I do think that if anything is wrong in the Mt. Olive Association it should be suggested when that body is in session and not because a few are dissatisfied to go out and organize another association. I am against any split in the Baptist family. I take no sides with either. Hoping this may set me plainly before my brethren. I remain in earnest support with the old Mt. Olive association that our forefathers gave their lives for. Rev. W. H. Carter, pastor Mr. and Mrs. Henry Moore, are still confined to their room. 80 DFATH AMONG COIORED IN WEEK Fifteen Cases of Influenza Pneumonia Claims 33 There were eighty burial certificates issued for Colored deaths during the week ending at 10 a. M., Wednesday. Influenza was given as the cause of fifteen cases and pneumonia claimed thirty-three. This list of deaths among Colored people is the longest that has been recorded since the influenza' epidemic started in the fall of 1918. Ullin, Ill. Dr. J. B. McCraiy. Ullin. Ill. Moderator of M. O. B. A. As a Baptist I don't hold with the present attitude of the ministers of this part of the state. Men who are sent to preach the gospel of the blessed Christ should be a peaceful, loving group: It is true Paul and James of old disagreed upon certain methods Men of today may not at first hand agree on certain methods, but should in time come together upon principles. You of the Mt. Olive association who are leaders, must be men of the hour, ready to strike down the enemy with the sword of intellectual sagacity at a moments notice profused from an honest and pure heart, dedicated for upright service in the Mt. Olive Baptist Association's cause. You as Moderator and the good shepherd of the flock must be ready to blot out competition. You must be on hand the 12-13 inst. at Cairo with a bunch of ministers who are willing to support and suffer for the cause of the association and show yourself competitors to any step taken, by any body of men who who are not friendly to the cause and principles of your association. Rear your heads if leaders be. Stoop not to things disdain. Hold your flags where folks can see; The flag that speaks of fame. If guilty count your ways unholy, Right about! without delay: Let right be your motto solely; Care not for what men may say. Ye are the armor-bearers of truth, and right Continue this grand old way, That demons be forced to sudden flight For God is mightier than they. I am sincerely yours, S. L. Thorpe. P. S. Tell them the Lord thru your humble servant sends them this message. Christian-Churchwell Mr. Burnist Christian, age 26, and Miss Arbic Churchwell, 23, both of Clifton, Tennessee, were united in the holy bonds of matri- mony Tuesday eve., at 8:00 P. M., at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. U. Bogan. Rev J. B. Mc- Crary, officiated. They will make Metropolis their home indefinitely. The Gazette wishes them a prosperous married life. 15 TO 25 NEGROES ARE DROWNED IN A "JIM CROW'. CAR Clayton, La., Feb. 4.—Two white trainmen known to have been killed and from 15 to 25 Negroes are believed to have met their deaths in the wreck here yesterday of a St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern passenger train, which plunged through an open draw bridge over the Tensas river. The coach set aside for Negro passengers was the only one to go through the draw, which was open to allow the passage of a steamboat and tow. The coach is reported under 50 feet of water and none of the bodies have been recovered. Owing to a heavy fog the engineer did not see the signals set against crossing the drawbridge. Centralia, Ill. The Second Baptist church is continuing her revival with much success. The Rev, Dr. Belt, of Upsalanti, Michigan, an evangelist of great power will preach this week. He preached to a large congregation Sunday and many sinners came to the front. A number of our members are on the sick list. Sister Reed one of our oldest members is sick and we are praying for her speedy recovery. We remain yours in Christ, Rev. W. H. Carter, pastor. J. Scott, Clerk. Colp. Ill. Please allow me to speak thru the columns of your paper. Mt. Olive Baptist church, of Colp, met Feb. 7, in a regular business meeting and unanimiously voted to stay with the Mt. Olive and the General State Associations of Southern Illinois, for we cannot allow ourselves to assist any one though they be our friends to destroy the lifes work of our sainted fathers which I believe would constitute high treason against the Baptist of the state which should be punishable by death. Speaking personally I believe that our protest has begun too late! too late! but, it will be no harm to let the district know where we stand against Dr. Olive and others. I have not a harsh word to say, but I believe they are making a great mistake which I pray they may soon discover e'er it be too late. We are making a large opening to give our enemies a great inroad to destroy our churches which they are doing in many places. When we ask them why they leave the answer is, too much fussing, this may not be the reason, but it sounds plausible to the weak ones. It all of the brethren, will take my advise let them go, for right will prevail. I am yours for Christ and His cause. Rev. J. D. Davis, Pastor Mt. Olive Baptist church. "Whatever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Yes, Elder Daniels, you have struck the keynote. It is true that the fathers, long years ago organized the Mt. Olive Ass'n; the title was so endeared to the Baptists in this end of the state, that when the body agreed to divide they clang to the name of Mt. Olive. However, they were to be known as East or West Mt. Olive, or North or South Mt. Olive. The association did not divide because of confusion but the confusion grew out of other things. It divided because the association was too large. The fathers founded this association upon One Lord, One Faith, and One Baptism. We frankly confess that the churches, have a perfect right to organize if they want to, but we cannot believe they will follow the unholy alliance, of 25 or 27 men that Dr. J·J. Olive claims in his letters sent to the different ministers in the district. He says they will meet in Feb., to perfect the organization (Southern Ass'n) Let him tell why he wan's this association! He gave the reasons why on two occasions. On to the Morris convention and the Milk and cider State convention. If the churches want to go into an organization of the kind it is their prerogative, but we hardly think they will when they learn the truth. They have resurrected the same old false-hood as against Moderator McCrary, respecting the school funds when the cashier of the bank in Metropolis gave out a sworn statement that the money is in the bank, and that the money to print the minutes of the Colp association had been spent by the Moderator and the minutes were not printed. The minutes were ready for distribution at the time this school was being circulated. Eiders J. D. Davis, and W. H. Carter, of Colp and Centralia respectively, have shown what they are by what they have done. They have erected houses of worship, that will do them credit when they shall have been consigned to the tomb. They have not entered another's harvest and paid off a few hundred dollars and taking the credit for the whole harvest. But they went in and labored and the work speaks for them. These men have been importuned to join the unholy alliance to disrupt and break up the Baptists in this end of the state. It is time for every sound Baptist to speak out, and show just where they stand just as Elder Daniels has. The Baptists are calling for Patriots and Traitors to show just where they stand. In the language of another, "He who steals my purse, steals trash, but he who robs me of my honest name does not enrich him, but makes me poor indeed." It seems to be the the concensus of opinion, by the S. S. workers that since Rev. E. Z Hunt, has taken an active part in the Southern association and condemned the old Mt. Olive association and has dragged his church and school into that organization, that the S. S. convention will have to be changed from DuQuoin to that of some other place. It is too bad but if its the will of that church to follow men off in the wrong, it is our pleasure and by the request of the President and others will seek another location if such is the case with that church. As long as there are three churches that stick to the old Mt. Olive Association, so long will this association exist. Plans will soon be formulated for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Mt. Olive Baptist ass'n., in memory of its organizers and the work accomplished by it. Tax Purchaser's Sale Notice. Morris, pastor. The Negro vote will be a big factor in the coming campaign and no candidate need expect their support if they have not dealt fairly by them in the courts and in dealing out patronage. There are some officers of the Mt. Olive Association that appear to be aligned with the new organization. They should not hide their hand. Speak out or get off the fence on one side or the other. We will work and vote for men to be officers of the association that are true and tried men in a crisis. The genuine Baptists have always stood for a regenerated membership, baptism by immersion and none but members of the same faith and order to be admitted the Lord's table.
