FLAG BURNED POLIGEMAN IS SHOT IN FIGHT
Several Hurt When Missiles Fly.
The burning of an American flag stated a race riot on the southside last night that in its first stages cost the life of an American sailor an another man the wounding of a Negro policeman, and serious injuries to others.
Negroes Burn Flag
The rioting was begun by 200 members of a Negro society who planned to go back to Africa. They were on their way to a meeting above the Entertainers' cafe, 209 East Thirty-fifth street. They paraded west in Thirty-fifth street and built a bonfire in the middle of the street, in front of the cafe. Into this someone hurled an American flag. The crowd gathered, Negro and White. There were threats and shouts and brandishing of guns
Negroes Seize Rifles in Auto
Nearby was an automobile filled with rifles, it is said. The Negroes made a dash to it and seized the guns. The policeman fell at the first valley. The sailor dashed for protection into the U-nised Cigar Stores shop on the corner. He was unharmed.
Three of the Negroes, it is said, ran to the door of the shop, took aim and fired. He was killed.
The chauffeur of a taxicab standing on the corner was fired upon by another of the Negro band. The bullett missed him, went through the windshield, and sent showers of glass all over.
An investigation was begun immediately. It was found that the organization which burned the flag was composed of Abyssinians. They had with them on their parade their own flag red, yellow and green, with a lion roaring on one side of it.
Great Crowds Gather
The police that poured into the territory had hard work to keep the great crowds moving. Thousands of colored men and women surged about the place where the jacky and the other dead man lay and about the Entertainers' cafe.
Moves to Kansas City
Bishop Wm T. Vernon, preached the Baccalaureate sermon at Wilberforce University, Sunday, June 13, 1920, and attended the Bishops' Council, which convened there at this commencement. He will return to Memphis, where he and his family will be given a reception by the citizens of all denomintions and then come home to spend the summer in Kansas City. The Bishop and Mrs. Vernon will sail for England in the
American Federation Wipes Out Color Line
Montreal, June 16 -The American Federation of Labor, in session here last week, voted to wipe out the Color line and give the Negro workers full and equal membership. The action came after a stormy debate that threatened a split between the north and the south. The resolution which caused the agitation gives the Negro freight handlers, express and station employees full membership and eliminate from its constitution the words "whites only" and was introduced by Jordan W. Chambers, business manager of the car Cleaners' Union of St. Louis.
Several motions made on the floor demanded that the railway clerks abolish the "color line" in its constitution or forfeit their charters in the federation. One was modified to "request" the brotherhood to give the Negro full membership. It was accepted by an overwhelming majority.

Senator Harding does not propose to leave his or his party's position on any important question, uncertain.
Senator Harding's greatest asset is his common sense. His head is not in the air. His feet are on the ground.
The commanding strength of Senator Harding is that he is a modest, earnest, yet intensely patriotic American citizen.
Because a voter does not agree with any plank in a party platform is no ground for the statement that the platform is uncertain.
President Wilson has made himself the shining mark by assuming that he is the entire Democratic party, label record, principles and all.
Program
The Democratic convention will as ascertain what sort of a programme ar will demand.
The Duty of Parents in Sending Children to the Sunday Shool.
It is the duty of every parent to send their children to S. S., and, if they are sent and go to other places. The parents should take them by the hand and lead them to the house of God.
We have a weak race today on the account of negligence. My Christian friends wake up to your sense of duty; you have slept long enough.
You have a long, long way to go, rise up at one and begin your journey by sending your children to Sunday School.
In our various churches we have only a few faithful christians and they are being called from labor to reward. and when a search is made to fill the vacancy there are none to be found.
Our youag people are following the inducements that the world offers because they have been allowed to partake with the worldly things instead of going to the S. S., and when they are grown they love nothing else.
If you fail to do your duty parents in sending your children to S. S., when are grown they will fail to send their children to S. S and in the course of a few years we will not be able to establish churches.
Be not diverted from your duty y idle reflections. It is your du-
semble in San Francisco to candidate President Wilson
try to send your to send your children to S. S.. Do you act know that you are treading on dangerous grounds? Your children are also, and they have farther to go. The danger signs are being given in every way.
Only think parents what terrible lates are doomed for your children and check the reins and turn them so that they may avoid danger send them to S. S., and let them be protected by the -S. S. the churches and B. Y. P. U.

The way that seemeth right unto men often leads to death. It depends largely as to the view one takes to right and wrong, much depends upon one's training.
We have received many encouraging letters as to our stand for the Old time Baptist Faith, from laymen and the clergy not only in our District, but thruout Illinois, telling us they are with us. We have the everlasting words of Christ, telling us He would be with us always, and to preach the Gospel, and we do, though the heavens fall. Thanks for words of confidence.

METROPOLIS WEEKLY GAZETTE, METROPOLIS, ILL.
We pity that soul whose religion will not bind him sufficiently strong enough to enable him to rise above his evil companions sufficiently high and long enough to allow his light, (life) to shine forth to illuminate the pathway of some poor sinner that will lead him into that path that shines more and more until the perfect day
We have several good greachers that are idle that would make good pastors if they were given a chance. Every church large or small should have a pastor, and carry out the great commission of Jesus. Ye should be doers of his word and not hearers only. Heed this message and herald it to the lost and benighted world.
Every church door in Southern Illinois should be thrown open at least twice every Sunday that the gospel might be preached to every creature. Let none hear you idly saying there is nothing you can do while the souls of men are dying all around you without any hope for the future life and happiness.
Any church needing a good pastor and a splendid preacher, a man of high ideals and broad vision, we can recommend Rev. Jno. Bruen, of Mt. Vernon, Ill., who successfully pastored Shilch Baptist church of that city for 5 consecutive years. His address is 1011 Herbert, St.
The old Mt. Olive has a foundation and a record behind it, as it was founded on solid facts and not on hate and misrepresentation. Its early founders stood for something in the days of yore. "Woe unto the Shepherd that divides my sheep."
We are sorry that a number of our life long friends and members of 12th street, Mt. Moriah and Mt. Pleasant Baptist churches suffered themselves to leave the record they have made for these many years to follow after strangers.
Md. City, Ill.
April 13, 1920.
To the Moderator of the Mt. Olive Baptist Association and to whom it may concern:
This certifies that the 1st Baptist church of Md. City asks that the Mt. Olive S. S. Convention convene with us Wednesday before the 4th Sunday in June.
Rav. G. W. Calhoun
Genuine Baptists do not federate with anything, but stands out clear cut for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, upon his word He would build his church and the gates of hell should not destroy it. Let us add here that all the combined forces of men cannot uproot the Church of Christ, or loose it from its moorings, neither can principalities, heights, nor depths, peril, or sword, nor world's upon world's persuade a child of God move him from trusting in God. There is a fixed principle in his soul that serves as an anchor to a child born of God.

if we obey that verse we will have no time to do anything to any body, talk or write about anybody, only that which is good or edifying or will lift up some one.
I hope that all the churches that were in the Mt. Olive Baptist Association are still with the old mother. I believe that you are, if not I love you still.
I ask the pastors of our district to let us look in on you at your earliest convenience.

The man who was born too early to wear, as a boy, red top boots with a brass tip across the toe was also born too early to feel the true thing in the way of pride run rampant. Silverthorn brass tips, they were called, and they were most serviceable in preventing holes in the toes. Silverthorn made his fortune out of them.
Daily Health Hint.
Understand that if you are mentally
suffied with slothness, old age and
death, no amount of desire or affirmation
can make you well, young, or
long lived. To be healthy, you must
be mentally in unity with health; so
remain young, you must be mentally
one with youth, and to live long, you
must be mentally unified with life,
says Wallace D. Wattles in the Nant
diana.

Notice
To the Pastors, Teachers and all Sunday School workers of the East Mount Olive Baptist Sunday School convention.
It becomes my very pleasant duty to remind you of the near approach of our Sunday School convention which will converse in Mt. Vernon, Ill. June 23 to 27 1920 at 9:30
It is our very earnest hope that this will be the greatest session in the history of this noble, noble body. God has wonderfully blessed us since our organization, it has grown both numerically and spiritually, but it has not accomplished all that we hope,
We are asking the co-operation and encouragement of the pastors first, for without them we cannot hope to succeed, therefore, let each pastor use his influence to have their Sunday School workers to meet with us this year, that they may be inspired by the study of methods and exchange of views upon Sunday School topics, to return home and do better work in the training for service.
Pastor T. J. Bruce, the preach- and artist has decorated the church elaborately for the convention, it is truly a thing of beauty,
The people are sparing no pains to make your stay pleasant, and they should be amply repaid by a wide awake, soul inspiring, and spirit filled meeting. There should no longer be a simply get-together meeting for pleasure and recreation but we should meet to glorify God and put forth every effort to help the pastor and people where we meet to extend the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
Let us come full of sunshine and of the spirit of service.
Yours in His name,
Major Singleton.
