MAN DISGUISED AS NE GRO TRAILS WI FEY AND WHITE MOB ALMOST LYNCHES
Des Moines, Ia., Sept. 8.—Attempting to chastise his wife, whom he had followed in the disguised of a negro, Elwell Smith was set upon by a number of white men, who believed it was a negro assaulting a white woman and nearly lynched him before he could explain the ruse.
He blackened his face with burnt cork and followed her. The wife denies having had an appointment and says she only stopped a white man to tell him she was being followed by a negro. The husband forgetting his disguise, walked up, thinking this an appointment, and commenced assaulting both.
Their cries brought a crowd, who set upon the black-faced man and all but lynched him. Indignation is high against such assaults here, because three women in the past few months have been assaulted by negroes. Times Dem. 9, 8, 708.
Many a Negro has been mob bed because some white scoundrel had blackened his face and committed a crime. The mob never stops to investigate and give a black man a show for his life. When scoundrels want to commit crime they blacken their faces. Ed.
The naming of Judge C. A. Cook as their candidate for the legislature by the republicans of Muskogee county is a credit to them, as Judge Cook's sterling worth and clean political record of long standing is well known to the writer, both coming from the state which honored the judge by electing him to a seat on its supreme bench. His only fault is he is a republi can. Muskogee County Dem.
Judge Cook will carry Haskell County by a good majority and of course Muskogee county will give the old Roman 1500 majority. It is fortunate that the Republicans have such a man as Judge Cook for the legislature. The Judge will see to it that $1250 of the people's money is not squandered to pass a bed sheet law. He is an old warrior and knows the game and will play according to the rules. Even democrats are disgusted with the laws made by the misfit legislature and will vote for Judge Cook.
At Greenville, Texas, the principal point of interest is the spot in front of the court house, where a negro was recently burned alive. No visitor is permitted to leave town until he visits this spot. It is but a poor recommendation for Greenville, to say the least. Times Dem., Sept. 8, 08.
Surely our city officers did not travel all the way to Texas to satisfy a morbid curiosity and see the spot where a human being was burned at the stake? No civilized person could enjoy the scene and we agree with the writer that its ad-poor recommendation for Greenville.
The democrats have nominated Judge Hutchins for member of the legislature. Mr. Hutchins is an old timer, a good citizen and an all round good fellow. The worst thing that can be said of him is that he is a democrat.
It would be a good thing if politics could be eliminated from the judgship and both county and district judges selected for their ability as lawyers regardless of their politics.

We are informed that Mr. Bucher who withdrew from the race when Gov. Haskell was candidate for member of the Constitutional Convention is now opposing the republican nominee for congress in this district. Strange if true.

Guthrie, Okla., Sept. 5.—Governor Haskell's school text book commission, after he had adjusted it to please himself by removing Mrs. Thomas Chambers, of Oklahoma City, one of the most capable educators in the state, does not seem to have been infallible in its selection of desirable books.
One of the new books, "A Study of Civil Government," by Evans & Bunn, of Ardmore, is arousing criticism among capable men throughout the state. The book is feebly and inaccurately written, and will cost school children an excessive price. The book contains 152 pages and will be sold at sixty cents, though it does not contain a single illustration or diagram. The high school arithmetic, with 462 pages, and many diagrams and much difficult composition, sells at 44 cents. A fair price for the civil government should not exceed 25 cents. Fifty thousand school children will use this book, and under the five years' contract, Evans & Bunn will sell 250,000 copies. They will receive 35 cents a copy above a fair profit, or a total of $87,500, which the school children of Oklahoma should not be required to pay.
The book is filled with inaccurate data, and teaches ideas of civil government at variance with the spirit of national loyalty that has perpetuated the states and the national government. It says, for instance, of the state of Oklahoma: "First, it is Oklahoman, yet American." Utterances of this kind were

abandoned by sensible men many years ago. The man who declares that the state is above the nation is not teaching loyalty and patriotism to the children of Oklahoma.
The books descend to servile flattery of the chairman of the school text book commission, Governor C. N. Haskell, who appointed the other memebers of the commission and who he could remove at his pleasure. On page sixty-three are these words:
"When the future historian writes the history of Oklahoma, he will, in justice, pay tribute to those distinguished men who composed the convention and to its guiding and moving spirit, C. N. Haskell, who as a reward for his able counsel and leadership in behalf of the people, a grateful citizenship elevated to the highest office in the state."
Are the school patrons of Oklahoma to be compelled to buy a book that their children may receive compulsory instruction of this kind concerning a man whose character and methods, both in public and private life are assailed in Oklahoma, and in Ohio from whence he came, in a manner that justly raised doubt as to his being the patriot and saint that he claims to be? This question is asked by men of all political parties.

Fishing.
It would be interesting to know from how many little wilderness stations in the north there goes each spring, to eager business and professional men in the large cities, the message that the ice is out. If one could measure and sum up all the pleasure of those who take the message for their marching orders, and all the increment of health and strength that comes to them by virtue of their annual fishing trips, it would make the world seem a very cheerful place. The charm of fishing, for the normal man, is so deeply rooted that it can be accounted for only by regarding it as a reawakening of primeval instinct. When a fly bobs down the rapids, or a worm drops into the hole below the big boulder, a racial memory older than history comes to life, and the cashier of the First National becomes blood-brother to the skin-clad savage who made the first hook from a bone or piece of shell. To the savage, fishing was earning a livelihood, getting a dinner. The fish he caught was the wages he received for working at his job. To his descendant of to-day, "fishing" is far more. It is a return for a time to natural conditions, where the sun touches the skin and water wets the feet, and clothes are friends which serve, not masters to be considered. The fish himself is not the most important, or even an essential thing—until he is hooked. But when the tug comes on the line and the fly disappears, and a thrill runs up and down the back-bone till the very toes tingle, then he becomes suddenly the most important thing in the world; and his appearance later, if, happily, he so appears, in an overcoat of cornmeal, browned crisp and piping hot from the pan—this confirms the impression of his importance, and crowns with reason the absurd business of catching him. The wholesome sentiment which would protect all animal life from cruelty has lately been showing a tendency to lapse into unwholesome sentimentality, says the Youths' Companion. There are those who regard all fishermen as monsters and look upon a school of mackerel as an educational institution. Alas for the boys of to-morrow if this creed spreads!
Houseflies.
If a man should come tramping into your parlor, besmearing the rugs or carpets with the mud, slime and filth that had adhered to his boots as he worked in the sewers or walked in the wet gutters, there would be an exceedingly lively protest and a very thorough cleaning after he had been ordered out or kicked out. A resort to violent measures to get rid of such an affront and menace would be upheld by the courts and by public sentiment. And yet just such a nuisance, only more impudent and dangerous, is tolerated in every house, with but little effort to expel him or with but indifferent protests as to his presence. The common housefly, says the Newark News, is an unmitigated thief and scoundrel, a filth-bearing, disease-carrying rascal who does not stop at defiling rugs and carpets and furniture, but who deliberately and with intent sets his dirty feet anywhere, even upon the victuals you eat.

POINTER BY THE PICKPOCKET.
Best Method for the Protection of a Diamond Stud.
"An acquaintance of mine had a queer experience the other day," said a man who has not much faith in anything. "A short time ago he was introduced to a pickpocket by a friend. The pickpocket is one of the best in the business.
"My friend didn't think anything more about him, but the other night he was in a saloon, after he had been celebrating most of the day. He was pretty happy and the pickpocket came in. My friend had a diamond stud in his tie with a screw attachment. The pickpocket walked up.
"You may not remember me," he said, 'but I met you the other night with so and so. Take a bit of advice from me. You may lose that shiner of yours if you're not careful.' Then the pickpocket looked at the diamond. He said the screw attachment wouldn't stop a good thief from getting the diamond, but he could fix it. He fished around in his pockets and produced a rubber band, which he tied around the screw.
"Now,' he said, 'they can only get your stone by biting it off.'"

German Wall Paper Trust.
Negotiations among the German manufacturers of wall paper have finally led to the organization of a trust. The seven leading manufacturers who have already joined have a combined annual production of about $2,620,000. The total output of wall paper in Germany is estimated at $7,000,000 per annum.
MOTHER AND CHILD
Both Fully Nourished on Grape-Nuts.
The value of this famous food is shown in many ways, in addition to what might be expected from its chemical analysis.
Grape-Nuts food is made of whole wheat and barley, is thoroughly baked for many hours and contains all the wholesome ingredients in these cereals.
It contains also the phosphate of potash grown in the grains, which Nature uses to build up brain and nerve cells.
Young children require proportionately more of this element because the brain and nervous system of the child grows so rapidly.
A Va. mother found the value of Grape-Nuts in not only building up her own strength but in nourishing her baby at the same time. She writes:
"After my baby came I did not recover health and strength, and the doctor said I could not nurse the baby as I did not have nourishment for her, besides I was too weak.
"He said I might try a change of diet and see what that would do, and recommended Grape-Nuts food. I bought a pkg. and used it regularly. A marked change came over both baby and I.
"My baby is now four months old, is in fine condition, I am nursing her and doing all my work and never felt better in my life." "There's a Reason."

TRY THESE FOR DESSERT.
Dainty and Appetizing Dishes of Various Kinds.
Coffee Fromage.—Pour one cup of scalding hot milk on one-third of a cup of ground coffee; let it stand ten minutes; strain this through a clean, wet cloth; have one tablespoon of gelatin soaking in one-third cup of cold water; add this to the coffee mixture, with five tablespoonfuls of sugar; put in the double boiler, when scalding hot pour some of this over two egg yolks; return all to the double boiler and bring only to the boil; remove from the fire, pour into a bowl when cold and beginning to thicken; add one cup of cream whipped to a stiff froth; turn into a mold, packing it well to exclude the air; let it stand in a cool place two hours; serve or a platter.
Coffee Custard.—Make a good strong extract of coffee by dripping it as slowly as possible through a percolator; for six people you will want one cupful; take four of the same measure of milk and beat into the milk the yolks of three eggs; add two ounces of powdered sugar; mix into this the cupful of coffee; as coffee differs in strength, taste to see that it is strong enough; pour the mixture into cups and put the cups in a not too deep pan with boiling water; the level of the water ought not to stand higher than half the cup; do not boil the water too hard; about 15 minutes of boiling is necessary; turn out on a dish; they may be eaten hot or cold.
Apple Meringue.—Slice any kind of a stale cake; put the slices in a baking dish; pour a little milk over; pare and core four or five apples; cover the cake with the sliced apples; sprinkle cinnamon or a little grated nutmeg over and a half cup of granulated sugar; put the dish in a quick oven and when the apples are tender make a meringue by beating the whites to a stiff froth; to each white add one tablespoonful of powdered sugar, using two or three whites to this quantity of apple; heap lightly over the pudding and brown slightly in a quick oven; serve with sweetened cream.
Bitter Almond Pudding.—Put one pint of milk over the fire; beat the yolks of two eggs with a quarter cup of maple sugar, grated, or brown sugar; mix two level tablespoonfuls of corn starch in a little cold water or milk; add this with the sugar and egg to the scalding milk; stir until thickened; flavor with half a teaspoon of bitter almond extract; pour into a pudding dish and cover with a meringue made with the whites of eggs and powdered sugar.
HOW TO TELL PURE WATER.
Simplest Way. Is That Called the Hirsch Test.
People not infrequently come home from a summer vacation if not with typhoid, at least with bad malaria or stomach disorders. This is often caused by impure water, and it is well, especially in going into the country, where wells are used, to know a few simple tests by which the condition of the water can be told. About the simplest is one that is well known, called the Hirsch test. Buy a pint bottle of clear glass, preferably with a glass stopper. Fill it two-thirds full with water, to which is added a half-teaspoonful of granulated sugar.
Cork the bottle tightly and stand in a light in a warm room for 48 hours. If at the end of that time the water is cloudy or milky-looking it is unfit for use.
Rye Pancakes.
One egg, one heaping teaspoon saleratus, one pint sweet milk, one cup flour, two cups rye meal, salt, cinnamon, one teaspoon cream tartar, one large bakingspoon of molasses. Dip spoon in deep hot fat and then in dough to have them drop easily into deep hot fat to fry.
Chiggers and Mosquitoes
Are now in their glory—their business is good and they are happy. There is no earthly use of your letting them chew on you, however, if you don't like their ways. A little Hunt's Lightning Oil applied to exposed parts will keep them off, and immediately relieve the irritation caused by their bites. Rub a little on and see for yourself.
A Broken Guarantee.
"I never guaranteed the horse not to balk. I merely said that he would stand anywhere."
"But he won't. When he balks he lies down."

| Muskogee,
From Judge
Cook’s Home
Warrenton, N. C., Aug. 26, 1908,
Mr. W. H. Twine, Muskogee, Okla.
Sir: I see by public press of your
state that the Republicans have nom-
inated Judge C. A. Cook, recently
a citizen of this county and state,
for the Legislature. Allow me to
say in behalf of Judge Cook, that
he is a clean, straight, high-toned
gentleman in every particular.
His word is to be taken by every
one that knows him. There is not
a Democrat in North Carolina but
doesn't believe what I say about
him in this respect.
In fact Judge Cook belongs to the
very highest type of the educated
Southern gentleman who would not
stoop to low, dirty political tricks,
simply to get your vote.
He is a man who says yes or no,
and means what he says, no more
and no less. Judge Cook hase’nt
an enemy anywhere, for every body
here without regard to party or
race love and respect him. He is
the same after the election as be-
fore it, and will not turn or bow to
crooked things to best his opponent.
We all believe out here that he is
one of the greatest and best lawyers
living, and will stop praying, I be-
lieve, to resent an insult, in fact,
‘no one bothers him who knows him
any way.
— Hoping that your ticket will win,
T am very respectfully,

Physicians Recommend Castoria
CASTORIA has met with pronounced favor on the part of physicians, pharmaceutical societies and medical authorities. It is used by physicians with results most gratifying. The extended use of Castoria is unquestionably the result of three facts: First—The indisputable evidence that it is harmless; Second—That it not only allays stomach pains and quiets the nerves, but assimilates the food: Third—It is an agreeable and perfect substitute for Castor Oil. It is absolutely safe. It does not contain any Opium, Morphine, or other narcotic and does not stupefy. It is unlike Soothing Syrups, Bateman's Drops, Godfrey's Cordial, etc. This is a good deal for a Medical Journal to say. Our duty, however, is to expose danger and record the means of advancing health. The day for poisoning innocent children through greed or ignorance ought to end. To our knowledge, Castoria is a remedy which produces composure and health, by regulating the system—not by stupefying it—and our readers are entitled to the information.—Hall's Journal of Health.
FOR THE HOT DAYS
VARIOUS DEVICES THAT MAKE FOR COMFORT.
Camping Idea for Care of Meat Will Be Appreciated by the Practical Housekeeper - Awnings for the Piazza.
The canvas home has become so popular during the summer months that a decided advance has been made in materials and outfits for camp life. Many of these devices are worthy of attention, and recommend themselves not alone to the lover of outdoor life, but to the practical housekeeper as well. The collapsible meat safe is made of English bobbinet, washable and extra strong. Circular bands of wire form a sort of cage, over which the bobbinet is stretched. Suspended from tree or beam this safe protects all meats from insects, while everything is left open to the air. The new folding camp stoves range from three to five dollars. There are no lids to this stove and the fire is fed from a door at the end. The stove is made of sheet steel, all edges wired and top-braced. It sits flat on the ground, and its weight is from $12\frac{1}{2}$ to $19\frac{1}{2}$ pounds. Ovens and aluminum bakers, which bake and roast when placed against the side of the stove, are said to be satisfactory. An excellent grate for cooking over coals can be bought for 75 cents. Made of heavy wire rods it stands about one foot high, and when not in use the legs fold flat and can be easily carried or packed. Pocket filters are useful, and their price is about one dollar.
When choosing awnings for the summer piazza select the shades that fade least and then take precaution to preserve them. Whether it is best to roll up an awning or leave it down during a rainstorm is an open question. Many declare that if left down they become thoroughly washed, and the rain runs off, taking dust and dirt with it, while if left up the water settles in the cloth in little pools and afterward stains are apt to appear. Of course, during a windstorm all awnings should be raised. Light straw awnings are very satisfactory used for a screen, but they seldom last more than one season. After they are no longer useful for the piazza they can be used to cover the glass on the hotbeds to protect young plants from too much sun.
A house or apartment can have a cool appearance if everything is removed that is suggestive of warmth. Instead of carpets and heavy rugs, cover your floors with either matting or rag rugs. Mattings can be easily kept free from dust by occasionally wiping it off with a damp cloth. At the windows have dotted Swiss curtains, and heavy hangings may be replaced with pretty cretonnes. All heavy furniture should be covered. Have plenty of flowers or pots of ferns about your rooms. The meals can be served with no table covering except doilies. In the early morning have the windows opened for an hour or two, and then all closed, and the rooms kept dark until late in the afternoon. This will keep out the heat as well as dust.
A Summer Sauce.
When cooked desserts, such as puddings or boiled dumplings, are used in hot weather, they can be given a more summery touch by serving with a fresh fruit sauce.
Mash a cupful of any kind of fruit. Strawberries make a delicious sauce, while peaches or apricots are equally good.
Beat to a thin cream a cup of sugar and half a cupful of butter and whip the white of an egg to a stiff froth.
Mix all three ingredients with an egg beater or perforated wooden spoon until very light, and serve immediately.
These berry sauces are also good when poured over sponge cake and used as a dessert.

Letters from Prominent Physicians addressed to Chas. H. Fletcher.
Dr. B. Halstead Scott, of Chicago, Ills., says: "I have prescribed your Castoria often for infants during my practice, and find it very satisfactory." Dr. William Belmont, of Cleveland, Ohio, says: "Your Castoria stands first in its class. In my thirty years of practice I can say I never have found anything that so filled the place." Dr. J. H. Taft, of Brooklyn, N. Y., says: "I have used your Castoria and found it an excellent remedy in my household and private practice for many years. The formula is excellent." Dr. R. J. Hamlen, of Detroit, Mich., says: "I prescribe your Castoria extensively, as I have never found anything to equal it for children's troubles. I am aware that there are imitations in the field, but I always see that my patients get Fletcher's." Dr. Wm. J McCrann, of Omaha, Neb., says: "As the father of thirteen children I certainly know something about your great medicine, and aside from my own family experience I have in my years of practice found Castoria a popular and efficient remedy in almost every home."
Dr. J. R. Clausen, of Philadelphia, Pa., says: "The name that your Castoria has made for itself in the tens of thousands of homes blessed by the presence of children, scarcely needs to be supplemented by the endorsement of the medical profession, but I, for one, most heartily endorse it and believe it an excellent remedy."
Dr. R. M. Ward, of Kansas City, Mo., says: "Physicians generally do not prescribe proprietary preparations, but in the case of Castoria my experience, like that of many other physicians, has taught me to make an exception. I prescribe your Castoria in my practice because I have found it to be a thoroughly reliable remedy for children's complaints. Any physician who has raised a family, as I have, will join me in heartiest recommendation of Castoria."

A SIMPLE SAFEGUARD IN BUYING PAINT.
Everybody should know how simple and easy it is to avoid all uncertainty in buying paint materials. There are many so-called white leads on the market, which contain chalk, zinc, barytes, and other cheap adulterants. Unless the property owner takes advantage of the simple means of protection afforded him by reliable white lead manufacturers, he runs great risk of getting an inferior and adulterated white lead.
It is to protect the paint-buyer against fraud and adulteration that National Lead Company, the largest makers of genuine Pure White Lead, place their famous "Dutch Boy Painter" trademark on every keg of their product, an absolute guarantee of its purity and quality. Anyone who wants to make a practical test of white lead, and who wants a valuable free book about painting, should address National Lead Company, Woodbridge Bldg., New York, and ask for test equipment.
Peonies as a Medicine.
Peonies were originally esteemed less for beauty of bloom than for value as a medicine. In recognition of its curative virtues, the peony was named after Paeon, the physician of the gods. An old writer says: "About an infant's neck hang peonie. It cures Alcydes cruell maladie." Nor did the use of the plant stop there, for peony water was esteemed and drank in bygone times, though whether as medicine or merely as a refreshing temperance beverage is more than modern writers can say.

No Social Standing.
"What do you think, Maria?" exclaimed the steel magnate. "Our son Reginald writes that he is on his wedding trip and his wife is a paragon." "A Paragon?" echoed his wife. "Dear me! I can't recall the name of Paragon in the social register. You must look her up at once, John, and see if Reginald has disgraced himself by marrying into an inferior family."
THREE CURES OF ECZEMA.
Woman Tells of Her Brother's Terrible Suffering—Two Babies Also Cured —Cuticura Invaluable.
"My brother had eczema three different summers. Each summer it came out between his shoulders and down his back, and he said his suffering was terrible. When it came on the third summer, he bought a box of Cuticura Ointment and gave it a faithful trial. Soon he began to feel better and he cured himself entirely of eczema with Cuticura. A lady in Indiana heard of how my daughter, Mrs. Miller, had cured her little son of terrible eczema by the Cuticura Remedies. This lady's little one had the eczema so badly that they thought they would lose it. She used Cuticura Remedies and they cured her child entirely, and the disease never came back. Mrs. Sarah E. Lusk, Coldwater, Mich., Aug. 15 and Sept. 2, 1907."

POULTRY AND BEES
KEEPING FOWLS CONFINED.
Room Which Should Be Provided for a Hundred Hens.
A city man living in the country wants to know how much room will
be needed for poultry house and yards to keep a flock of 100 hens. They must be confined in yards all the time. In such a case it is well to have at least four yards.
YARD
HOUSE
YARD
YARD
if land is available. A house 14x30, facing the south, with a shed roof, should be divided into two equal pens. Each will hold 50 fowls. There may be two yards south of the house and two at the north, as indicated in the diagram. A half acre of land inclosed in this way will provide green food for the fowls. They may be kept in the north yards during the summer and the south ones during the fall and winter months.
While the fowls are in one set of yards, says the Farm and Home, the others should be plowed up to sweeten the soil and sowed with some suitable crop to provide green food. If clover is sown in spring in the north yards it will make sufficient growth to provide good picking during fall and winter. Rye or wheat and winter vetch can be sown in the south yards during fall. If the yards are large enough the best way is to seed them down to grass.

Place first board, Fig. 2, $ 2 \frac{1}{2} $ inches from end A of cigar box, and second board, Fig. 3, $ 2 \frac{1}{4} $ inches from end B. Tack two thin boards between the two boards, allowing plenty of room for an egg to be dropped down, says the Farmers' Mail and Breeze. They will keep the eggs from rolling back and forth. Four and three-fourths inches from end A of box paint with black paint and $ 2 \frac{1}{2} $ inches from end B paint with white paint. The eggs may be tested either by sun or lamp light.
Poultry Profitable on Farm.
It is my belief that farm poultry is more profiable than the poultry kept in any other place. I have never observed that our poultry cost us much. We have a variety of feed that would go to waste if we did not use it for poultry.
Put new straw in the nest boxes often. Burn the old straw from the nest boxes.
IMPROVED CHICKEN COOP.
Convenient Way in Which It Can Be Made.
The diagram shows a convenient way to make a coop for the poultry yard, of which the special feature is its door. Procure a box of the right dimensions and saw a hole, d. in one end. Then strengthen the box with narrow strips of wood. b c. on each
Hingeless Door for Chicken Coop
side of the hole b c. This acts as a groove for the door, a, to slide in. Thus you have a sliding door, which opens and shuts with the greatest ease. The front of the coop is inclosed with lath, or narrow strips, placed $ 2 \frac{1}{2} $ to three inches apart. The top should be covered with a good grade of roofing paper to make it waterproof. A coop of this sort, says Farm and Home, should be two to $ 2 \frac{1}{2} $ feet long, 16 inches deep and not less than 20 inches high, while two feet would be better.
THE PURE BRED
Its Value Has Been Proved Over and Over Again.
Progressive chicken raising must keep up with the times and adapt itself to new methods. As in all industries, so in chicken raising, the past few years have offered wonderful improvements, but these have taken place in fanciers' stock more largely than on the farm. If winter egg producing is to be the main object of the farmer-poultryman, let him select one of the heavy-laying breeds, such as Minorca or Leghorn. Best of care must be taken of the young chicks so they will grow to maturity. They should be kept free from vermin above all things.
A flock of strong, healthy pullets is a source of joy and profit to the farmer, but farmers will say they haven't time or money to grade up their fowls. With very small expense, simply the purchase of a few well-bred cockrels, any farmer can make an improvement in his poultry.
Twelve years ago, writes a correspondent of Orange Judd Farmer, I bought a sitting of pure-bred eggs, which turned out so well that I soon disposed of all my mongrel stock at the market, and proved to my own satisfaction that a flock of pure-bred poultry was a good side issue on my place. I have improved my flock from time to time till now I have chickens that are admired by all who see them. I am sure no farmer who ever once owns a flock of pure-breds will go back to mongrels. Beside being handsomer, they lay more eggs and command a ready market for fowls and eggs for breeding purposes at a good price. What is more beautiful than a flock of pure-bred chickens on a green lawn? All farmers should own at least a small flock.
CACKLES.
You cannot blame a hungry cat for destroying birds at nesting time and picking up a young chicken once in awhile. Feed the cats extra well, and they will not be apt to form these bad habits.
In setting a hen late in the season, when the weather is warm, it is well either to make the nest on the ground, or to put a sod in the bottom of it, so that there may be some degree of coolness and moisture.
The highest prices for roasting chickens are paid in June and July. This means that the eggs set early bring the largest returns. A good hen in a warm hatching house will raise as many chicks in March as an indifferent one without proper care in July Farm Journal.
The Limit.

"Why, he tried, this year, to make his wife wear the bonnet his horse wore last summer!"—Yonkers Statesman.
