Every indication apparently point to the practically unopposed nomination of Elihu Root for the presidency on the Republican ticket in 1916, and this too without him ever being a candidate in the usual sense of that term.
The sentiment for Root is from the people and no amount of wirepulling or "favored son" talk in behalf of other candidates will alter the situation in the slightest degree. He is America's leading citizen and is so recognized the world over. His recent speech at Philadelphia, extem-
peraneous though it was, was the finest elucidation of the present situation in American polities that has ever been uttered. It show the keen conception which he has of things political and otherwise and is ah accurate portrayal of the state of the public mind. It is one of the finest explanations of what ails us as a nation that has ever been framed into language.
There is no mistaking the trend of public opinion which is back to the old moorings to conservatism, to sanity and to reason and Root is the paramount eader fo the movement. To him the American people must look for guidance and direction.
The Repubiican party has no other man who so comp'etely personifies the ideals and principal for which it should and does stand as Elihu Root. He should be the party nominee for the presidency next year on his own platform with his own matchless record and splendid achievements together with his broad conception of the future needs of the country as the safest and soundest promise to make good tha. can be offered.
with the great international complication that are sure to follow the European war. the business and industrial troubles now afflicting the nation as a whole and the nebessity for a great man at the head of affairs Elihu Root stand out bodily and undeniably as the man of the hour. To him the star of the nation look with confidence for the return of sanity, prosperity and contentment and a settled policy of government that will drive away the glooms restore respect to the American flag at home and abroad, set the wheels of industry in motion and blot out the foul suspicios and miserable rsflections cast on all those in authority which is fast crmbling the proudest and best nation the world had ever known into the dust and aehes of things that were.
It is not a question of merely selecting a candidate to win with that confronts the Republican party and the American people but the selection of a

man who has the vision and the courage to refrain from grandstanding and barnstorming for the mere sake of winning popular applause. Let us have a return to true principles of Republicanism, when men in public office will not be afraid to act in accordance with their consciences and when they are not trping eternally to trim their sails for each passing breeze. Let us get back to the day when our public men can sit erect in their various stations in life add not be everlastingly with their ears to the ground to catch the first tremor of popular movement. It is time to remember that the noise of the mob is not always the real sentiment of the people and that no nation can survive governed by coward and hypocrites emasculating their own consciences for the sake of retaining office. This is the third year the State of Missouri has conducted these laying contests and Barron's hens, shipped from England, have won against the world each year. Messrs.
