The Muskogee Cimeter. Vol.18 Traitors or Patriots Which? Recent news dispatches from Texas, the border state, show a deplorable lack of patriotism Texas, which has heretobefore begged to be permitted to whip Mexico alone, now fails in the pinch. Her militia are running away, hidding from Uncle Sam, who has called on her to help protect her border line. Together with Arizona and New Mexico she heeds not the call. not a single organization has been mustered in. More than a hundred men of the Second Texas National Guard have flatly refused to respond. How different was the response to the call to lynch, burn at the stake, a defenseless Negro. Fifteen thousand brave murderers to one to one helpless bound victum. Texas did herself proudly that day. She demonstrated her weakness her cowardice, her savagery, but when the president called upon her to send her men out to defend the ilag, to face the enemy, man for man, it was another tale to tell. Yet the truly brave colored soldiers are marching onward seeking and destroying the enemy who has terrorized these same brutal cowards. These Negroes are saving Texas only to be rewarded with such disgraceful and in human acts as occurred in Waco a few days ago. As to these traitors they are threatened court martial, but the old "States Rights" idea is still so dominant with the present Democratic administration that it will be doubtful if the old time Democrat will submit to a subvision of Democratic principles in order to punish such treasoaable derelection of duty. What does this wild "Preparedness" cry mean? Is it the hyphenated citizen that is refusing to uphold the American flag, or is this lack of loyalty only the aftermath of the Civil War and a resurrection of that old abominable state rights doctrine that over half a century ago cost us so many lives and so much money? The Dick National Guard law places the state militian as much under the command of the President as is the regular army. He is the commander of both. But it is not authority, but laxity of discipline and the free sway gives racial prejudice which is our American point of weakness in the army in the courts and in the geneal administration of affairs. The militia of the Southwestern states would respond quickly enough against Negro alive, it would have been easy to have gotten five thousand Texas National Guards to Waco before sunrise to surpress or slaughter the whole Negro population had there been any indication that the Negroes would rise to seventh the burning of the Negro boy at the stake the other day. The United State has spent tens of thousands of doallar to equip the National Guards of Texas, Arizona New Mexico, and these equipments and ammunition can be turned upon loyal citizen more quickly and more eagerly than upon foreign invaders, despoiler and assassin. The refusal of the National Guard to obey the command of the President is Muskogee, Okla., Saturday June 17, 1916 To Colored Voters of 28th Senatorial Dist. This paper is glad of the opportunity to endorse the Hon Percival Adams who is a candidate for the State Senate from the 28th Senatorial District and desires to state that when Mr. Adams was a resident of Muskogee and identified with the Republican party. He was always found at the front when it come to fighting the battles of the colored Republicans of Muskogee County. Puting his shoulder to the wheel with the leading Colored gentlemen of this community for fair play to the colored voters of this District. Notwithstanding Mr Adams strained from the fold of the G. O. P and was defeated for Justice of the Peace by one of our leading colored citizens. The Hon. E. D Jefferson we desire to recommend him to the colored voters as a friend of the Negro. mutiny and insubordination and need be punished or outright treason will spring from its seed. All this comes from nurturing the mob The mob that trample down the law will tramp down the flag. Wherever the mob dominates treason will flourish. If you can't depend upon them to defend the flag, One is the emblem of the other. Texas is a state of mob, and it cannot be depended upon as a state of patriots, because the habit of disregarding the law easily be gets the habit of turning down any authority or emblem of national majesty. The man that tears the Constitution into tatters strikes at the national heart and you can not depend upon him when the nation needs liberty loving patroits to defend its honor. Worthless Negroes Like all cites we have some worthless Negroes in Muskogee and its this class of men and a few women that couses friction between the races, when an honest citizen goes out to protect this class he is certainly going the limit In order to save the better element it becomes their duty to put a quietus upon this worthless element Sometime ago the writer came into the city from Reeves Addition on a late car and on the same car was a gang of Negro men and women whose conduct would be a disgrace in hell, The gang were composed of thieves thugs, vags women of the lowest morals and stuff like that, this gang of out laws had gone from the city proper to hold their orgies and were on the return trip, Had any white person been on the car that night and objected to the filthy outfit as they would have had a right to do then some irresponsible cuss Negre would have been saying the Negro wont protect his women. To hell with such a crew and the sooner the better. Its a condition and not a theory that confronts us. Any decent woman no matter what her color is has the protection of our men and to the limit. The other class wout get it and are not entitled to it. The Tulsa Star one of the best weekly papers in the Southwest has become a daily and of course stands at the head of the class. We admire Smithermans courage, He is a brilliant young man and able to make it a success of any one can. We hope he will get the patronage he so richly deserves we are kinder proud of you Andrew even if we do diffar politically. Cimeter voices in your success. If you want to reach the Republican Colored voters you must do so through the Cimeter. We reach them all both Republicans and Democrats. There are some Negro Democrats but they like the Cimeter The rank and file, the boys at the crossroars, the fellows in the trenches are raising the sinews of war and before the ides of July or thereabout we will bring suit in the U. S. Court and have the fellows know, who would reinforce the Grand father law, that every man black, white or red wheathr he can read or not shall vote at the next election. All we need is a solid front. The loyal Negroes are organizing in every school Dist and the sinews of war is forthcoming. Let those who have not organized get in the game at once. We must fight our battle we will win the ballot and then use it for self protection, use political parties as a club to beat down the prejudice in our way. An article from the Muskogee correspondent to the Tulsa Star appeared a few days ago that does a great injustice to the Negro men of Muskogee, among other things the writer intimates that the Muskogee men will not defend their women and cites a case in point where a colored woman had been insulted and the men stood idly by We have made diligent inquiry and cant find a single thing to warrant the assertion We ask the Star to have its correspond in it make his charge more definite and certain. Name time and place and some of the men who stood idly by. The Negro men of Muskogee have proven upon many occasions that they were willing to stand the acid test and put their lives at stake for the protection of the race. They have been on guard et all time when needed, The slur cast at them by the Correspondent s uncalled for and unless he can give names, time and place we shall brand it a lie. We ventrue the assertion that when the Negro men of this town were at the jail offering their services to prevent mob law that the correspondent was a asleep not at the switch bu in bed at home or prepairing to init the road in high places. The Republicans have Nominated a winning ticket Justice Hughes will be elected by an enormous majority. He will carry every State North of old Mason and Dixon line. The Negro in the doubtful states will support him loyally and even Oklahoma is making sign like a "Mysterious stranger" She will be welcome into the Republican Column. The new paper started a week ago in this city asked some one to give it a name. One devlish fellow after reading the scurrillious attact upon P. M. Delancy suggested the euphenious sobriquet of "Liftum Duagi" but we believe in being more charitable and suggest "Alpha-Omega" because the sheet died absorbing. It gave just one long loud howl and with its brilliant array of talent just gave up the ghost. In the journalistic gravityard is a newly made grave on the head stone is both of the above suggested names and then the single word "Finis". The article (although an advertisement in which one Low attempt to insinuate that P. M. DeLancy is dishonest was enough to kill the young child. An adult would have been weakened by such a load Aud when one stops to compare the two men in a communisy it shows a giant and a low pigmy DeLancy has brought the U. B. F from nothing to one of the largest organizations in the State and has the confidence and respect of the masses of our people. He can go into any Court and go on the witness stand and testify and no one can successfully object, can his traducer do the same, Some people Some people are low by name and nature and cant help deliving in the mire. DeLaucy is in the clear the people believe in him and will retain him in his present place because he is Right. The low curs and Jackals will trail along in the rear. The refusal of Col. Roosevelt to become a candidate and split the Republican vote makes him one of the grandest figures in American politics and a patriot of the highest degree. This insures the election of Mr. Huges and prosperity for the American people for the next four years. NOT A CHILD RACE The assumption, made by those who wish to rush into the public prints for purposes of press agent advertisement or what not, that the colored race can be classed in the child races is as assinine as it is disingenuous. The race that opened the great dawn of civilization when the ancestors of the present day naughty and supercilious Caucasians were contentedly enjoying the blessings of cave existence; the race whose civilization purified and influenced that of ancient Egypt and from the banks of the Nile was wafted to Greece and Phoenicia, Rome and Carthage may be said to have degenerated under the cruel influenc of slavery and the perverse example of civilized Caucasirn vices, but cannot logicali be classed among the child races—if there is any such group. Colored Americans are fully capable of self-government, whatever the showing made by Hayti of Liberia. In spite of the popular Caucasian belief, self-government is not a purely western Europe trait. The colored American, given a state of his own, could No. 6 doubtless give the white American a few pointers in self government. It is not too much to say that the lynching disgrace, as practised on white men or colored, would be distinctly discouraged, and, in fact, totally wiped out under his government. Of course, to-day and under the white man's government he is a square peg in a round hole. Laws are made that, in except where thy deter his progress and bar his natural ambitions, are not drawn up with his man. Measures that would improve his mentality, encourage his industry and mould his morals are never though of. In fact, such a consummation would be decidedly unwelcome with the majority of the law makr if not with the mass of white people. But the mere fact that he is struggling to fit his square self in a round hole and that every step he takes forward is fiercely combatted by the demons of race hatred and the ungrateful gentleman of the South is not enough to convict him of being a child race. Americans, least of all, can declare such a judgment. Exchange REGISTRATION LAW UNCONSTI- Oklahoma City Judge so Holds in Granting Injunction Against State. REPUBLICANS WIN Restrains Commissioner From Paying Claims for Registration Printing Oklahoma City, May 27.—Holding that the new Oklahoma registration law is unconstitutional District Judge Oldfield this evening granted an injunction asked by Arthur H. Geissler, chairman of the republican state central committee. Attorneys representing the state served notice that they would take an appeal to the supreme court. Everything will be done to get a decision from the supreme court at the earliest possible time. Restraints Officials. The injunction sought by Mr. Geissler would restrain the county commissioners from paying claims for printing blanks that were used in the registration of voters under the new law. The state contended that the proper method for testing the validity of the law was for some voter who had been denied registration to bring the proceedings: that the injunction to prevent payment of any claim under the law was not the proper way. The above is only a starter. We must now get in the U. S. Court with an injunction and put a stop to the rascals for all time. It will take some money to do this. We must work as well as pray. Let every loyal Negro get busy and raise his share. Do it now. It will and must be filed before July. Every man, whether he can read or not, is entitled to vote. We understand our old friend, Bert Chandler, of Vinita, will be a candidate for Congress in the 1st district. He is an old-timer and we wish him well. Rev. S. C. Doyle of Clarksville, Okla, is one of the most energetic race men in the state. He is doing a great work for our people and the organization for protection of which he is the leader is growing rapidly and under his leadership is "making good." The cowards at Waco, Texas, have had their picnic with the lynching of a poor innocent defenseless colored boy. What they have sown they will reap and in the near future; the High Sheriff in hell will hold a soirée with the infernal cowards from Waco, Texas, as chief actors in the drama. We can't understand where the loyal race loving patriots were when this outrage was being perpetrated. If three brave men had stood for law and order the outrage would have never been committed as the cowardly mob could have been dispersed when hot lead was thrown into their ranks. The only way to fight the devil is with fire and we make this suggestion to our brothers in Texas. (Hell.) --- MEMBER NATIONAL NEGRO PRESS ASSOCIATION The National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Mrs. Booker T. Washington president, holds its next bieni- enal in Baltimore, Maryland, beginning Sunday, August 6th, with a mass meet- ing in Bethel A. M. E. Church and regular program August 7 to 10 inclusive. It is hoped this will be the most largely attended meeting in the history of the organization. The Cimeter is for Teddy Roosevelt for President because he is a sure winner. The Cimeter is the only Republican paper in the City of Muskogee. The daily Phoenix is sometimes Republican and sometimes independent but at the present time it claims to be independent, such a changing is not worth three whoops in h—l to any political party and yet Bixby, its editor, got rich at the Republican pie counter. What base ingratitude. SEGREGATION IN TEXAS CITIES ILLEGAL The fight on laws which discriminate against the colored people continues in various sections of the country. The latter part of March the Texas state supreme court in the case of Frank A. Spence versus W. W. Fenchler, on appeal from El Paso county, held that the cities of Texas have no authority to establish districts IMPROVED PASSENGER SERVICE ON M., O. & G. Effective Sunday, May 21st, the M. O. & G. Ry. established sleeping car service between Joplin, Miami, Wagoner, Muskogee, Henryetta and Oklahoma City, on trains 3 and 4. Train No. 3 leaves Joplin at 4:15 P. M.; Muskogee at 9:30 P. M., arriving at Oklahoma City at 6:55 A. M., the entire train running through to Oklahoma City, via Dustin and the F. & W. R. R. Northbound train leaves Oklahoma City at 11:00 P. M., reaching Muskogee at 7:30 A. M., and Joplin at 1:00 F. Parlor cars have been placed in service between Muskogee and Oklahoma City on trains 5 and 8, leaving Muskogee 9:30 A. M. arriving at Oklahoma City at 5:35 P. M. and leaving Oklahoma City at 9:30 A. M. arriving at Muskogee at 4:50 P. M. Luncheon is served enroute, and the convenient daylight service gives passengers a view of the bustling Henryetta-Dewar-Kusa smelting district—the plants being in full view from the car windows. Handsome brick depots have just been completed and occupied by the M. O. & G. Ry. at Deware and Kusa. Rock ballast is being installed as fast as possible, and the road-bed is being put in good condition. A bill in Congress which provided that five members of each United States regiment be elected to attend West Point, in order to fill the deficiency of officers was attacked because if the bill passed it must included members of colored regiments. An inquiry asking the War Department if the proposed training camps to be established would permit the attendance of colored men brought the response that no provision had been made for training camps for colored men. We are in the peculiar position of having a flag which will protect us in foreign countries; will not protect us at home, and for which we are not wanted in defense. A suit was brought in the District Court at Oklahoma City to test the validity of the Registration law passed by our last legislature for the purpose of disfranchising the Negro as we see it. The reason the number is increasing is because the oil fields of this wonderful section of the country are still in their infancy and geologists say that the actual oil supply has been little more than simply "tapped." Geological surveys and production already proven show that practically the whole of Eastern Oklahoma from the State of Kansas on the north to the State of Texas on the South is one continuous oil field, the richest production already proven being in the counties of Kay, Osage, Washington, Nowata, Craig, Rogers, Tulsa, Wagoner, Muskogee, Okmulge, Creek, Okfuskee, McIntosh, Hughes, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Marshall and Carter. There are many other counties which are positively known to have oil and gas but the production in the above-named counties is already a proven fact, and they are now producing millions of barrels of oil each year. Space forbids detail, but an examination of official statistics will bear out every statement herein made. Glancing at the above paragraph one might naturally ask the question: "Who are the men who are making these enormous fortunes?" The answer is easy; they are the shrewd men of business from Pittsburgh, New York and other large Eastern cities who have become convinced of the possibility of this vast oil field and have dared spend their money to develop it and the results have been most flattering. These men have been followed by thousands of local men who have made the same efforts and acquired the same results. These results have been accomplished by local men largely by means of corporations formed among themselves for the purpose of development, they having followed the old adage, "In union there is strength." Thus far we have said nothing about the color of the men who have made and are making these enormous fortunes, nor the race to which they belong. We might naturally presume that they are caucasians and, in fact, such presumption is exactly correct. Practically all of the oil companies of Oklahoma are composed of white men. Now, what part is the colored man playing in this great "game"? He has played a very small part, so far. However, the race has just cause to be proud of its leaders, who are willing to shoulder burdens for the benefit of the race and take the initiative in fostering industries for the colored man. The race has every reason to be proud of such institutions as the Black Panther Oil Company, composed of colored men and white men., for it now stands along in the front rank of independent producers in point of wealth and production. It is practically the only company of its kind in Oklahoma. Some of the most valuable oil land in the State of Oklahoma is owned, or has been owned by colored people. The enormous incomes of some of the owners of oil land in this rich country bear testimony of this fact. Some of the striking examples of this fact are Sarah Rector, of Muskogee, whose income requires the entire time of her guardian to take care of it; Luther Manuel, of Haskell, Okla., whose income is now more than $12,000.00 per month, or $400.00 per day, and who now owns one of the most valuable business blocks in the City of Muskogee; Dan Tucker, whose guardian is Mr. Jess W. New York.-The Abyssinian Baptist church in this city, of which the Rev. Dr. A. Clayton Powell is the capable and highly esteemed pastor, recently closed a ten days' celebration of its one hundred and sixth anniversary. Some of the most able clergymen and laymen of the race took part in the anniversary exercises. Inspiring and scholarly sermons were delivered by Reva. H. H. Warring. W. J. Lucas, W. M. Moss, W. H. Brooks, W. P. Hayes, W. H. Harrod and S. W. Timms. Mr. Watt Terry, the young real estate operator of Brockton, Mass., who is reported to be worth nearly a million dollars, and Hon. Fred R. Moore urged the race to save money and go into business. One of the features of the celebration was a recital of sacred music by an orchestra of fifty members from the Martin Smith music school. Never before was a sacred concert held on so large a scale seen in a church among our people in this city. The pastor and officers asked for $2,000 during the celebration. Up to the fourth Sunday in November $2,040 had been reported, and some auxiliaries were to be heard from. This church has a unique and admirable method of conducting its activities.
