KNEW HIS NIGHTINGALE
One time on the Texas frontier a
mem came into a camp riding an old
mule,
“How much for the mule?” axked
a bv-atander,
“Jist a hundred dollars," answered
the rider.
“I'll give you five dollars,” said
the other,
The rider stopned short, as if in
amazement, and then slowly dis.
mounted.
“Stranger,” said he, “I ain't a-
roln’ to let a little matter of ninety-
five dollara stand between me and a
mye trade. The mule is yonrn.”

courting that you were so ill-tem-
jered, I never would have married
you.”

Lesson for January 8
LESSON TEXT—Mark 1 21·45.
GOLDEN TEXT—He hath done all things well! He maketh both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak.
PRIMARY TOPIC=Jesus Makes Sick People Well.
JUNIOR TOPIC—John Welcomes and Baptizes Jesus
INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOPIC—Jesus Shows His Sympathy and Power
YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPIC—Jesus' Power to Make Whole.
The purpose of Mark in this section is to show Jesus Christ the Divine Servant hearing God's message and clothed with the power to save lost souls. Coupled with His superhuman strength is revealed His unwearied sympathy, giving itself out in helpful and saving service.
1. Jesus Teaching With Authority (v. 21, 22).
2. The place (v. 21).
It was in the synagogue in Capernaum where He with four disciples required "straightway" upon His entrance into the village. He availed Illinois of the regular channel of instruction. Though many abuses had crept into the synagogue service, He chose to associate the new with the old order.
2. The time (v. 21).
His faithfulness in observing the Sabbath brought Him to the place where the people assembled to worship and to hear the Scriptures expounded. He came not to destroy but to fulfill the law, even the law of the Sabbath.
3 The Impression (v. 22).
The people were astonished. Two things about His teaching impressed the hearers.
The substance of His message. The scribes, the professional teachers of the law merely quoted the authorities, but Jesus with first-hand knowledge set forth the truth with the enthusiasm of freshness and personal conviction. This distinction was quickly detected by those who heard Him.
H. Jesus Conquering Demons (vv. 23-28).
1. The outcry of the demon posessed man (v. 23).
Perhaps he interrupted Jesus while He was teaching. When the power of God is manifested there is bound to be an outcry of the evil spirits.
2. The demon's confession (v. 21).
"Thou art the Holy One of God"
The one whose chief business it was to waste and destroy human life was in such miserable state as to desire to have nothing to do with Christ, and was now forced to confess Him as the Holy One.
3. Christ's attitude toward him (v. 23).
He asked and accepted no testimony from Illig, but sternly rebuked and cast out the foul spirit. He not only is Illimself pure but is able to deliver others from impurity. Christ wants confession only from pure lips.
4. The obedience of the demon (v. 26).
The spirit was reluctant to leave the man and malicious to the end, for he tore the man whom he had to leave. He had to acknowledge his defeat and went out in a howling rage.
5. The impression made upon the people (vv. 27, 28).
The news of Christ's power spread rapidly over Galilee. The people were startled by two things:
(1) The new doctrine which He brought.
(2) Illa authority over demons.
III. Jesus Heals Peter's Mother In-Law of Fever (iv. 2031).
This scene lies in the home of one of the disciples. He went home with Simon and Andrew who told Illm of the condition of Peter's mother in law. He came at once and lifted her up and the fever departed. She immediately ministered to Illm.
IV. Jesus Ministering to Many (iv. 3234).
Though the day was strenuous in its labors, He came unwearied even when the sun had set, to meet the needs of the multitudes who had gathered from all parts of the city. He healed many of their diseases, cast out demons, not allowing them to speak The demons knew Him, but the poor, blind people knew Him not.
V. Jesus Cleansing a Leper (vv. 33-47).
As Jesus preached in the synagogues of Galilee and east out demons, HIs power became known. A leper came to HIm saying, "If Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean." HIs put forth HIs hand and touched him, saying, "I will, be thou clean," and immediately the leprosy departed and he was cleansed
Beauty of Bible Thoughts
I am of the opinion that the Bible contains more true sensibility, more exquisite beauty, more pure morality, more important history, and finer strains of poetry and eloquence than can be collected from all other books, in whatever age or language they may be written—Sir William Jones.

Subject: "What the Church Has Lone." Acts. 17:1-6.
A moments earnest observation will reveal the fact that the church is the great dynamic force in human uplift.
The church has civilized, the church has given and maintained the ethical standard. I speak of the church, locally and collectively, as God in the world, trying to reconcile the world to Himself, through Christ.
Paul was God's Missionary Evangelist. The heart of His message was the suffering, death, resurrection and life of Christ. He was a great teacher as well as a great preacher.
The message he had is the only message for the church today.
The church is not losing power; it may be however, we are not turning it on.
The church has united families, races and nations. It has directly, or indirectly given to the world its leadership, also its standard of ethics.
The church has given hope and inspiration. It has been the center of unity. "All One In Christ." The character of the work of the church fundamentally has not changed. Reconciling the world to God is still the heart of its message.
Ottawa News.
On account of the extreme cold weather, the attendance at Bethany, Baptist S.,S., was small, Sunday, with the exception of the primary classes; the pupils were assembled as one class. There was a good attendance at both services. At the morning service, Rev. Favors selected as a text Ibeb, 6:9; subject: "New Year's Day is a Day of Retrospective Witness."
The subject for the evening service was, "The Pursuit of Christ." Phil. 3:13. We were made to realize that the greatest of all joys that comes to the human family is the joy brought by pursuing Christ. If we make a success, we must press on and should reach after the things God has in store for us in 1928. The Annual business meeting and election of officers was held Jan. 2nd. The B. Y. P. U., entertained the public Tuesday evening, Dec. 27th. After a short program, all repaired to the dining room where ice cream, cake and coffee were served free.
The B. C. Missionary Circle celebrated its 24th anniversary, Thursday evening, Dec. 29th. More than 100 persons were served lunch, free. All auxiliaries went over the top. The Banquet given by the St. Paul A. M. E. Church, Dec. 26th was quite a success. Rev. J. R. Ransom of Topeka, was the speaker of the evening His subject was, "The Christ I Know." Dr. Ransom was accompanied by his sons, Mr. Ed. and Dr. Payne Ransom. Mrs. Mollie Grider, of St. Joseph, Mo., mother of Rev. Enyard, was also present. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Edwards of Topeka, are visiting relatives and friends in Ottawa and Paola.
Misses Sadie and Rachael Johnson have returned from Leavenworth, where they spent the holidays.
Those ill are: Mrs. Emma Leonard, Mrs. Sarah Clayborne, Mrs. Queenie Hurtado and Henry Ball.
Mr. and Mrs. McBriar and daughters entertained at their home in the country, Dec. 30th, for dinner, Rev. and Mrs. Chas. Favors, Misses Charlesetta, Thelma and Juanita Favors, Master John Favors, and Mrs. Wooten of Chicago, Ill.
Mr. Lee Hicks, of Los Angeles, Calif. who were called to Ottawa, recently on account of the death of his mother, Mrs. Joanna Hicks, has returned home.
There was a family reunion at the home of Mr. Wiley Anderson, Christmas.
The family of Mrs. George Lewis had their annual get-to-gether Xmas Day with a family Christmas Tree. Besides the 25 relatives, present, were Rev. Favors and family and Mrs. Wooten of Chicago.
Miss Mirtha McBrier entertained at her home for New Year's dinner.

well as in our church and conven-
tional matters, |
It is my opinion that God hes
brought us hither to this place and

REV. I, D, SKINNER,
STATE AND NATIONAL
EVANGELIST,
Coffe) ville, Kansas,
ministers, the organization for the
launching of the the three weeks’
drive was thorough and complete,
The focal ministers, deacons, and
the active leaders of Maple Street,
and Quinn Chapel Churches were
placed in the front to take charge
and to marshall the different prayer
bands; and to see to {it that the
canvass for souls reached every
nook and corner of the city; and to
hold prayer service at stated or des-
ignate hours, in every part of tha
city. This was succesfully carried
out every day to the very last day of
the campaign, So that every patt
of the city was effectively touched.
These same active, earnest and de-
termined workers had charge of the
preliminary and prayer meeting
service was allowed to drag and
hence the evening services were full
of pep and inspiration frcm the be+
ginning to end every night.
“Then in the second place, perfect
harmony and peace prevailed both
with the ministry and the members,
and the most congenial Cinistian
fellowship was eminent from the
vory first to the last, without the
sounding of a single discordant note,
Love prevailed as the one great po-
tent force, and the predominant,
factor In the meeting to the end.
Every one, both pastors and pea-
ple, admitted that the preaching of
the Gospel through the Evangelist,
iad far surpassed anything in that
respect, that they had ever heard
betore; and that the Bible meetings
in the afternoons were a source of
vital and educational information in
the truest sense of the word; but it
was not me, Lut the manifestation
of the Holy Ghost, throug me for, I
am nothing without Him. I feel
very much honored however to,
used by him in the preaching of the
glorious Gospel of Christ,
Asavesult, there was approal-
mately 50 souls brought to Christ.
The attendance increased to the end.
The family group service on last
Wednesday, and the service for
young people Firday night proved
to surpass any other service in at-
tendance and in rapt interest,
The sermon to the young people
was about the evils of the modern
lance; and the young people are to
2e complimented for the marked at-
ention they gave to that message.
At the conclusion of the sermon they
were asked to vote for or against
lancing, and one quick, direct, and
inanimious vote upon the part of
he young people was given against
jancing, and the vote was taken
mn the part of the entire audience,
The vote was solid against the mod- 1
mm dance. It was a eerlous and
jolemn occasion. A complete victory
‘or Christ and the church,
These revival services were held
ne week at each church, beginning
vith Maple Street and then at St.
John, then at Quinn Chapel; and
hen swinging back to Maple Street,
losing on Monday night.
After the services, a splendid re-
eption was had for the benefit of
le evangelist and the converts.
I go from here to Shiloh Baptist
Shurch, Fort Scott, Kansas, Rev. M.
. Smith, Pastor, to launch a Union
fleeting for the redemption of our,
reople there. Pray for me,
