THE NEGRO STAR. FOR THE GOOD OF THE PEOPLE Vol. 25 No. 30. RACE CALLED TO- GETHER AGAINST LYNCHNIG BOSTON, MASS. Oct. 30, 1930 Inviting all Colored citizens of the U. S. A. to come individually, or as a representative of some organization, lodge, church, committee, city or other locality, the National Headquarters of the National Equal Rights League here has issued the official Call for the National Colored Anti-Lynching Congress in the John Wesley A. M. E. Zion Church, 14th and Corcoran Streets, N. W. Washington, D. C. on Niv, 24th and 25th. The Call, which maintains that it is the race's plain duty to face the dusty increase of lynchings, more in nine months of this year than in all of the two previous years combined, with a concrete national race demonstration of protest and of planning to meet the renewed menace to property and life, points out that the National Capital., just before the American people observe a national day of Thanksgiving and are open to appeal, and on the eve of the assembling of the U. S. Congress, make the place and date especially suitable for this crisis. The Colored preases are requested to make the open admission to, and the independent nature of, the Conress clear to the race. Every Colored Church, literary, club, fraternity, lddge, and other racial organization or anti lynching Committee created for this convention, are urged to send representation. The Congress will be a racial mass convention under its own, organizing after being opened by the League, whose annual meeting is on the date after. All race pastors are asked to announce it Sundays and offer prayer that it may be large and powerful for relief. Heads of National organizations, orders and fraternities are urged to request all branches to send representatives. Inquiries are already reaching. League Headquarters at 47 Court Street Wm. He owned a taxi line and was engaged into a number of businesses, he owned quite a deal of real estate. He leaves a wife, Mother, and a father many relatives and friends. We enter into the deepest sympathises with Mrs. H. I. Monroe and daughter over the death of their son and brothers, Harrod who suddenly passed away in Kansas City, last week from pneumonia. Johnson and John Willingham had charge of the devotional period at the morning services. Rev. Chas. Favors brought two splendid messages during the day. Johnson, BOARD OF SOUTHWEST ASSOCIATION CONVENE WITH Church, Arkansas City, Ks., You, Pastor, 13-14.1930 REPUBLICAN PEP MEETING Last Wednesday night, the St. Mathews C. M. E. Church Annex was filled to the overflow with enthusiastic hearers, during a Republican Pep Meeting with Mr. T. R. Gravelly, Chairman and Dr. F. O. Miller. Master of Ceremonies. Practically all of the Candidates were present and were ably presented by Senator James Stewart, Chairman of County Central Cownttee. He gave some valuable information Concerning each Cnndidate and urged the thinkers to vote for each one. The Elks' Brass Band furnished the music to the delight of all Chairman T. R. Gravely opened the meeting with some timely remarks, then Dr. F. O. Miller was presented as Master of Ceremonies; Dr. Miller in his usual way not the Candidates told in unmistakable terms" He had them to know we were for them this time, but if they didn't prove worthy, please don't ask for another chance. He brought out several essential points that the Negro is thinking on, and looking for releif, viz, work in support a home and children. Give some of our qualified young women places in some of these offes, and a fair and equal treatment to all. He mellowed down and introduced Mrs. Stella Haynes, who is a candidate for the U. S. Congress. He showed every sign of being worthy, honest and fair. Prof. F. C. West apoke on how to vote and what little information cerning the Republican Ticket—they the home had in the north, and cononly know about Dr. Brinkley. Mr. Chas. Bettis came in hurled a few firing darts into the hearts and finds of the hearers, which caused much applause. Rev. Griffin, in a few words, endorsed Mr. Horn for County Treasurer. The meeting was good, and much impression made. We shall look for ynu at the polls next TUESDAY, NOV. 4th. HERRINGTON NEWS The Home Mission Circle met with their Sec., Mrs. Ora Lee Crisp; the attendance was large; the lesson was beautifully taught by Instructor Mrs. P. F. Keels. Many thoughts were gleamed. Sunday School and church services were fine, Sunday; a large attend ance was present. B. Y. P. U. was enjoyed by all, both young and old. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Crisp and Mr. and Mrs. John Hmaliton were visit ors in Junction City the past week and report an enjoyable trip. Mr. and Mrs. John Hamilton, Mrs. A. D. Crisp, Mr. W. M. Byrd and daughter attended the funeral of an old friend in Dunlap. Mrs. Tavie Hayes. Mias Edith Crisp and Bro. Robt. Crisp have been on the sick list, gut up again. Mr. Pitta was a visitor in Caldwell the past Sunday. Every one is enjoying the Bible lessons on Friday night. The Star Light Band children are giving a social on the 30th of Oct. The Home Mission met with Mrs. Hattie Hamilton the past Thursday; many thoughts were gleamed from the lesson. The Mission has also planned a Baazar on the 15th of Nov.; every one is invited. NOTICE! The Woman's Home Mission Society met Thursday 24th at 8.00 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Beaie Hamlet in a business meeting, with the president, Mrs. C. Harris presiding. Opened by singing: "What A Friend" Scripture lesson: Luke 17;1-7; the president led in prayer; song: "Near The Cross;" lesson study: "Beginning Of Mission and Brester Hospital." Some very interesting thoughts were brought out of the lesson. Mr. Roy Hamlet rang a Bass Solo, and Mr. J.W. Harris made a short talk on "Faith." Sunday 26th, at 8:00 p. m., the pastor brought a soul stirring sermon from Luke: 22.35; theme: "Friendship." We were pleased to have visitor, Mr. Burrell of Wichita. NO SUNDAY MOVIES Wichita is regarded as one of the most religious cities in America. It leades in many missionary and Kingdom building acts. For it to go on record as turning the Lord's Day over to movies, would be a step backward. It will not make Wichita greater, because greatness comes from thinking and doing great things. A show might be a place to relax or forget or throw of a tired and worried feeling, but never to create great thinking or acting; especially, it will not be so from the kind of shows now on the screen. Think of the following reasons why you do not want Sunday shows, and then vote against them: I-It is the Lord's Day; our minds should feed on the Lord's work our eyes should see the glory of his handy work; our souls should glory in the love of God and man; it on man. 2 It will not make Wirhita better, as great cities are not counted great for its houses of amusement, not for its places to spend and walst, but for its places to work, save and invest. Cities which had the fines Theaters and Amphitheaters are long gone to ruin, and when Wirhita desires to make the Lord's Day, a day of folly, it makes a turn in the road. 3-It is not wise to create a larger possibility to desecrate the Lord's Day. 4-It will only suggest to the young, who will, go out to put in practice, on some country road?? the suggest ion made at the show, since it is not a work day, they will have the time. 5-It is challenging God's Church to rival the follies of the world. 6 There is something within you crying for a chance to become like its Creator, and you don't want to put more obstacles between you and the "Cross" of a Crucified Savior, a Heavenly Father and lose the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 7. GOLDEN TEXT—Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled, and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus PRIMARY TOPIC—A Weak Man Becomes Strong JUNIOR TOPIC—A Weak Man Becomes Strong comes Strong INTIMIDATES AND BENIOR TOPIC—How a Weak Man Became Strong. YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPIC—How Christ Gives Strength. 1. Peter Confessing Christ (Mark 8:27-29). The time was near at hand when Christ should make the supreme offering of himself for sins on the cross. Knowing the tragic experience through which the disciples would pass because of it, he sought to prepare them for it by leading them into the apprehension of the cardinal doctrines of the Christian faith such as: the integrity of his person, stoning death, resurrection, and second coming. Peter's confession was provoked by two questions of Jesus. 1. "Whom do men say that I am?" Opinions differed, but all recognized him to be a teacher or a prophet with more than human authority and power. 2. "Whom say ye that I am?" Jesus persistently claimed to be the very Son of God. He would have his disciples to possess a personal and experiential knowledge of himself as to being God manifest in the flesh. 11. Christ Warning Peter (Luke 22:31-34). 1. He told him of Satan's desire concerning him (v. 31). Satan is constantly striving to destroy men. 2. Christ's prayer for Peter (v. 32). He prayed that Peter's faith fail not, not that he should escape the sittings. 3. Peter's confidence (v. 33). His fall began when he refused to listen to Christ's words about the cross. Believers begin to weaken when they no longer desire to hear about Christ crucified. 4. Depial announced (v. 34). III. Peter Denying His Lord (John 18:25, 27). 1. Before the servant mald (vv. 15-18). Peter blundered in attempting to follow Jesus at this time (John 13:36). Presumptuous boldness frequently leads into embarrassing positions. Under the taunt of the Jewish mald he openly denied the Lord. 2. Before the servants and officers (v. 23). Peter was now warming himself at the enemy's fire. When questioned, he denied his relation to the Lord. Separation from everything that is opposed to the Lord is necessary in order to have a clear testimony (II Cor. 6:14-18). 3. Before the kinsman of Malchus (v. 20). This man had seen Peter with Jesus in Gethsemane (v. 10) when Peter rashly cut off the ear of Malchus. He put the question straight to Peter, "Did I not see thee in the garden with him?" At the utterance of the third denial, the cock crew, reminding Peter of Christ's warning (Mark 14:72). IV. Peter's Restoration (John 21:15-17). Peter had thrice denied his Lord. Therefore, before his reinstatement in the Lord's service he must thrice confess his love for Jesus. In this reinstatement and commission of Peter is set forth the motive and nature of the service which has Christ's approval in all times. Love for Christ, not primarily love for the sheep, proves the genuine shepherd. 1. "Feed my lambs." The word "feed" as well as "lambs" signifies that the work here enjoined is that of nurturing babes in Christ. 2. "Feed my sheep." The word here means to feed, guide, correct, and lead the maturer classes of Christians. It carries with it not alone responsibility of feeding, but corrective discipline. Failure will inevitably follow if this be attempted without love. 3. "Feed my sheep." This doubtless relates to the care of aged Christians. The word "feed" returns somewhat to the meaning as in the first instance where he says, "Feed my lambs," so that the minister's responsibility to care for the aged is equivalent to that of the young. Peter was to express devotion to Christ by a martyr's death. In God's Husbandry Heart troubles in God's husbandry are not wounds, but the putting in of the spade before planting the seeds.—H. W.
