Special Correspondence of The Ack, Marshall FALLS, Tenn. "TWENTH MARCH" 10.—The editor of the New York Ack has visited Texas, so he has been able to hear and its people, but his readers may not have an idea of it as it is in this neck of the grove, and of the conditions surrounding those of our race living in it, their status among their rulers, and their capabilities and aspirations. I am in what is here called the mountainous system of Western Texas. The country is rather wild and uncultivated. The people are mostly small farmers, ranchers, wood choppers and stone quarriers. We have some small trees. There is one railroad, the H. and T. C. The climate is healthy, the air pure and bracing. Cotton and corn are the principal farm products, though small grain such as wheat and oats sometimes thrive; fruits such as peaches, plums and grape do well. Land is not dear, farm and sales from $3 up and town lots are available. We pay $2,000 a year can be bought from $1.25 per acre. Negroes are not denied the franchise, but they are not called on Jurors. We have a poll tax law or, strictly speaking, the "Terrell election law" and a white man's primary which work like a charm when and where RACE ENTERPRISE.
