EE — —— Member of the ASSOCIATED NEGRO PRESS “First in Service” A HARD CUSTOMER | Ask the average Negro business man what of his colored trade and he will tell you the “brother is a hard customer.” He means simply that the Negro is more exacting when buying a business place operated by a Negro than he is when buying in a place owned by the white man. ‘There are many proofs of the unfair demands of the “brother” when he desires to make a purchase. If he is “allowed in” a Greek restaurant, he will walk past a Negro restaurant to spend his money with the Greek. If he knows a white man who will serve him, even in some private room, he will spend time and car fare to patronize this white man. If he can arrange to spend his little money with the Caucasian, the Negro business man never has a chance. ‘As true as is this statement, there is some reason for it. ‘The “brother” has been trained to expect the very best the white man can produce. The Negro was born amid modern ideas and inventions He first saw daylight in a house built by modern architects and mechanics. +He has never known primitive life nor the period of struggle and development. He was born amid a developed civiliza- tion. But it is high time the Negro learned something of the period of struggle and development. It is time the Negro learned that all things have a beginning. He ought to know, after these years, that he and his people must develop from the bottom upward, and not from the top downward. There is little excuse for the brother’ who can not sympathize with his struggling race, and help it with his support. If we desire to be served at marble counters, we must sper” more money at the wooden counter. If we desire to be groomed in ivory chairs, we must spend more money in wooden ones. If we’ desire to read daily Negro papers, we must buy more of the weekly papers and read them from front to back. If we are anxious to see department stores operated by Negroes, we must spend more in the little shops. ‘Yes; we are a hard customer. But there is hope, if once the! real sense of race consciousness is properly awakened. ! For one week, at le A 7 In the days of our fathers, we heard very little of health week, if at all. We heard very little of health of mind, of body, of home: and environment. Health was not discussed; it was thought to be fixed and not subject to assistance. We are learning better as we advance. We have “Health Week” as an institution. We have health agencies organized and functioning in almost all parts of our country. Health is receiving its share of scientific attention since we have known how dependent is health upon our better judgment. In setting apart “Health Week” for the country, our leading health agencies have succeeded in attracting national attention to| the care and keep of mankind. We are yielding to the suggestions offered with respect to body, mind, home, association, thought,— life itself. A healthy body is expected to house a better mind than an unhealthy body. A home made and kept clean and sanitary by constant care and keep, houses a better citizen than the home neglected. Association free from unwholesome contacts beget stronger characters and more dependable citizens than careless as- sociations, Cleanliness of thought is born of properly governed thinking. Health is but health. It becomes habitual, after some practice, to have a healthy body. a healthy home, a healthy environment. Life itself becomes more vigorous when subjected to healthy habits. We are called upon to “celebrate” Health Week with a full sense of value which must come to us, as well as the value of the lessons we offer to those about us. For one week, at least, let us catch the spirit and “clean up.” —Pittsburg Courier PARAGRAPHIC SHOTS Archeologists say that the old Egyptian kings were buried in asbestos shrouds. Wonder if the officiating undertakers meant to suggest any doubts.—Nashville Southern Lumberman, The Senate has passed the farm aid bill, and that’s all right. P. will be held on Sunday ar ternoon at Little Pilgrim Chapel at the corner of Grotto and W. Central Avenues. An interesting program has been prepared Dr. Wallace of Macalester College will be the speaker of the afternoon. Plans have been completed to launeh the annual drive for member- ship which takes place on the fif- teenth of April. At this meeting the selection of persons who are to par- ticipate in the drive will be made, A large attendance is expected and the association hopes to make this drive a great success, GRAND SUCCESS MINSTREL SHOW (Continued from page 1) ley, Smith, Mrs. Pickett and Mrs. Roy Goins in classic and clog dancing. ‘The end men were a perfect scream keeping the audience in an up roar by their various antics assisted by Mr. Miller as interlocutor, whose jokes were orginal and extremely funny. The Treble Clef Ladies Quartette rendered some delightful numbers. Mrs. Brightie Meade and her orches- tra accompanied the various numbers in a delightful manner. On all sides at the conclusion of the affair there was the greatest praise for those who took part in the aftair. Mrs. Cora Grissom, Mrs. Mauae Brooks, and Mr. Charles Miller de- serve great credit for putting it over and we hope it will be an annual af: fair. TRAIN WRECK PROVES SERIOUS, TWO HURT Red Bay, Ala., April 7—In one of the worst wrecks seen in this section in years, two colored firemen were seriously injured Monday, when two heavy freight trains crashed in a head on collision, the foree of which demolished the engines and twenty freight cars. Investigators have been unable to determine why the fire- men alone were killed and! it is thought that they were acting as engineers as well as firemen. The firemen caught beneath the wreck- age could not be extricated for some hours, parts of the locomotives hav- ing to be cut away to aid their es- cape. ADMINISTRATION {S DETERMINED: WIL AEAPPINTCOHEN (By the Associated Negro Press) Washington, D. C., April 7—Pres- ident Harding will, no doubt, reap- point Walter L. Cohen, of New Or- leans to the position of Controller in the Mardi Gras City. Such an act will be significant of the tenseness of the times, politically, and of the a- roused determination of the Admin: istration. It was former Senator Frelinghuy- sen who declared in the closing days of the last Congress that “We are not going to let the southern Demo- erats send the Republican party to hell.” That, indeed may be regard- ed as a Simon pure statement of the feeling of red-blooded Republicans who, like the distinguished former Senator of New Jersey, have discov- ered that neglect, indifference, and double dealing are prices that bring disaster. Newspaper comment on the ap- pointment of Charles W. Anderson is generally favorable. It is argued by some, however, that if it is done to bolster up the prospects of President Harding’s re-election in 1924, it may, be too late. Wille, on the other, hand, many ate saying: “It is never too late to do good,” adding laconi-| cally: “While the lamp holds out to| burn, the vilest sinter may return.” E. W.
