I have this to say of Rev. Brown's morning sermon, that it was filled with a substance of spiritual delight that attracted for him the closest attention. Often I noticed the congregation sitting motionless and absolutely noiseless, whose faces seem to be absorbing what was spoken, as a sponge boring the moisture about it.
It is then that the speaker is able and always gives to his listeners the feast of his soul and thus "the sheep were fed by their shepherd."
At evening a pseudo-song and discourse service was held, marked with manifestations of delight throughout. At Sunday School one hundred and twenty-four who were present listened to remarks from Mr. M. M. Marshall of Detroit, Secretary of the Pinchback Electric Motor Corporation of Arizona, who interrogated the Superintendent, M. Fowler, relative to the lesson. The Junior Choir is going to sing "Joy to the World"—a quartette chorus each singing at the same time, with quartette in the gallery. The anthem contains a solo and duet also. They will sing at 10:45 a. m. services. You who are acquainted with our Christmas Cantata work will not be disappointed if you come and hear our Senior and Junior Choir render the Cantata which will comprise the entire evening's services.
At a Church Conference, initial steps were taken to start upon our drive for our pro rata of the connectional $5,000,000 drive. More news as things mature in this connection.
Rev. Jackson has his first grand Church rally Sunday (tomorrow). He is such a reputable, genteel minister, I'm sure the many new acquaintances of his will gladly remember his efforts on this day and be present. Our Church will have a table there, upon which our members and followers may lay their offerings. Members! Members! Members! Look well toward this table!
Mothers of the Junoir Mite Missionary "tots," you are absolutely responsible for the "how," when" and "where" of your children. They meet twice each month, meeting on Saturday—next Saturday with Mrs. Bruce, on Twenty-third Avenue. Kindly bring them. Mrs. Moten, Matron.

It is with great joy that I wish to announce to my friends that the American Library Association, which is the highest literary body in America, has highly endorsed my book, "The Negro Trail Blazers of California." The glad tidings was conveyed to me in a marked copy of their bulletin for November, 1920.
This bulletin is called "The Book List Guide to the Best New Books." My book is not only listed as one of the Best New Books, but they have this to say of it: "Leontium Delilah Beasley—The Negro Trail Blazers of California. A thorough searching of the Negro's part in California history, and a record of achievements of recent and present day notables which must serve as an inspiration to members of the race and as a contribution for students of Negro sociology."
I regard this a great honor, not only for myself, but for the race throughout the United States. This summer the library of the British Museum (the National Library of Great Britain) purchased a copy of the book. The Public Library of the City of Baltimore, the Minnesota Historical Society Library of St. Paul, Minn., and Mills College Library. Aside from these, out of the State Libraries I have sold copies of the book to the Public Library of Los Angeles (three copies), the Public Libraries of the cities of Pasadena, Santa Monica, Long Beach, Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, University of California, Alameda County Library, California State Library, Sacramento Public Library, Stockton Public Library, San Jose Library, San Jose County Library, San Jose State Normal School Library, Palo Alto Public Library, Leland Stanford University Library, and many others.
The charm of the sale of a book to a library is that so many people will be able to read the book My book is always placed in the reference library, so that you can go to the library any time and look it over in the library. There is another interesting feature in selling to a library—it matters not who else has purchased the book, or who has recommended its purchase, it is never purchased by any library until the Library Board criticises the book. Then they take a vote on it, and send you your check for the amount asked for the book. No one has any pull in getting a book into a Public Library—nothing but the merit of the book.

Board spends months in criticising a book before they pass a decision on it. There were two other books endorsed which were from the pens of members of the race in the same bulletin with mine. Dr. S. Montgomery, Pastor
Sunday School was, as usual, good. Every teacher was at place, with a splendid lesson.
At 11:00 a. m. the Pastor was at his best, and preached a logical sermon on the text. "I was glad when they said unto me. Let us go into the house of the Lord." Psalm 122:1.
There was so much brought out of the sermon that was food for our souls.
The B. Y. P. U. met at 6 p. m. The President, Mrs. Austin, was at her post, and the meeting was a success. At 7 p. m. the house was crowded with anxious hearers, and the Pastor again preached a sermon that will never leave us, on the subject, "A Man Wanted." Text, Jeremiah :1. Many tears were shed and many hearts leaped for joy as the Pastor preached this business sermon. One member was receeled for baptism.
The Missionary Society, under the leadership of Sister Burks and Sister Montgomery, is marching over the top in a big way. Mrs. Jones is turning things right and left, making ready for Christmas exercises with the children. Miss Masterson will lead the

Be sure to attend the Nativity Pageant of the Hostess Club, on Wednesday, the 22nd of December. It tells the beautiful story of the birth of Christ. By attending, you will help to purchase a piano or the buildings. If you like music, attend the record shower given by the Philomathae Club on the 23rd. We have a fine Vicrola, and need the discs to make it go. Come out and help.
The Gioconda Corps of the Girl Reserve is coming forward with a vim. They are going to give a sugar shower for the Old Folks' Home on the 21st. If you want to help the girls, make it a success, give them the price of a pound of sugar. They are truly not disappointing those who are watching them grow.
On the 27th—Monday after Christmas—the committees are going to give an "All Association" stunt night. Come out and enjoy yourself. It is free, and will be filled with Christmas cheer and good will.

Dear Friend and Brother:
My silence has been owing to the great revival that Miss Miller the Evangelist who was there last summer, is holding. She is now at my church, Lain's Chapel. So many have received Christ, I have, of course, been busy in the choir and didn't do any visiting, as it is nearing an end. I send this to your paper, and trust God it will be placed in it so it may be read and heeded by many. God bless and keep you. Will send you some news right after Christmas.
Respectfully yours,
MRS. ESTELLE WILLIAMS BLACK.

REV. D. R. WALLACE, Pastor
The sermon last Sunday morning was very inspiring and helpful to all who attended. Father Wallace urged all communicants to prepare for the Christmas Communion, which will be celebrated Christmas morning at 9 o'clock. He desires to have as many communicants as possible celebrate the Holy Communion at the 8 o'clock service.
The Choir is preparing special Christmas music to be rendered Sunday, December 26th, at the 11 o'clock service.
The Sunday School will present a "Manger Service" for Sunday, December 26th, at 9:45 a.m., at which time they will bring presents for the Orphanage and Old People's Home. That afternoon they will make their annual pilgrimage to the Old People's Home, where they will sing their Christmas carols and distribute gifts to the old people, and in this way help bring the Christmas joy to the hearts of the aged. Tuesday evening, December 28th, at 7:00 o'clock, they will have their Christmas tree program at the church, at which time the Children of the Orphanage will be present.

Rev. J. B. Holmes, Pastor
"A Call to Service" was the subject from which the Pastor preached a powerful and convincing sermon, Sunday morning. A large congregation was in attendance, and the many words of commendation after the service proved how well they were pleased. The music sounded better than ever, showing the good work of a careful and competent chorister. So sweetly did the Junior Choir sing their anthem that when an after collection was asked for their robes, $25.00 was given in a few minutes.
In the evening Rev. Grace preached an interesting sermon. He held his audience as he told of the love that had turned him from heathendom to Christianity.
The Endeavor was led by Mr. Stewart. A number of young people took part in the interesting and enjoyable discussion. The Endeavor is planning to present the Church with a much needed article. Come out and help them.
"Something Different" is being planned by the Sunday School for the remaining Sundays of the year, and from the Christmas program on the 24th. At this time they present pictures of the birth of Christ and sing songs telling the story.
The annual Christmas Party of the Calendar Club will be given December 21st. Beautiful presents are being prepared for all who attend.
Next Sunday morning the Christmas message will be delivered by the Pastor. Special Endeavor program at 6:30 and a special service for men at 7:45. At this service Attorney Sledge and Mr. T. E. Smith will deliver addresses. Prof. Heath will sing "Jerusalem" and Mr. Kirk will sing a Gospel song. Other numbers will be announced Sunday morning.
On Christmas morning services will be held at 5:30. On Christmas Sunday at 3:15 p. m. the Choir will render the beautiful Cantata, "Promise and Fulfillment." This promises to be the best Christmas Cantata rendered by our Choir, and will be largely attended by music-lovers on both sides of the bay.
On last Saturday evening Mrs. Mae Merritt and Mr. Owen Ince were married by the Pastor. Mrs. Merritt is an active member of the Church and the Parsonage Club. Many friends are wishing the couple great happiness.

VICTORY IN ARKANSAS
RIOT CASES
Supreme Court of Arkansas
Reverses Decision of Lower
Court in Case of Six Men
Condemned to Die.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, 70 Fifth Avenue, New York, today announced an important victory in the case of the colored men condemned to death in connection with the Arkansas riots of 1919. The Supreme Court of the State of Arkansas has reversed the decision of the lower courts condemning the men to death. This is the second reversal by the State Supreme Court of Arkansas in these cases, and announcement was made by James Weldon Johnson, Secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, that the fight will be continued in the courts until justice is had.
The Supreme Court of Arkansas, in reversing the decision of the lower court, held:
1. That discrimination against the colored men, because Negroes were barred from the grand and petit juries trying them was in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, and of the Civil Rights act of 1875;
2. That the lower courts had erred in refusing to hear evidence on a motion to set aside the regular panel of the jury.
Word comes from Arkansas that the other six men whose death sentences the Supreme Court refused to review will probably not be executed pending determination of the cases recently reversed.

THE PEACE DOVE HOVERS OVER THE NEW ELECTION OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION
But, however, let us go back and, for the sake of the future administration let us review the past and the cause of the great fight against President W. Butler and the last administration. These differences were well and publicly mentioned on the evening of our last election, when President Drake was allowed to pick up the shattered ruins and to bring peace out of confusion. President Butler said as there appeared to be no more fight, he was therefore willing to hand over the presidency. However, let us not forget the close run Mr. Fisher made last year, and that without the vote of a great many of the malcontents who, though disgusted or frightened, failed to turn out and help fight the ends.
But let us go back to the beginning of strife, lest we forget—back to the time of the Santa Fe Track troubles and the Nortons. In this matter, as in a few other cases, it appeared that the leaders of the National Association were not willing to work with other organizations or to take orders or suggestions. This period contains other organizations which had already taken the matter up and were willing to co-operate with the National Association and push the matter through. Now this seems to have been one of the first steps to discord and discontent beginning to brew. The leaders of the National Association were charged with haughtiness, swell head, etc.
Lest we forget and fail to prosper by past mistakes, it will be remembered that at the election three years ago at Fifthteen Street Church Attorney Sledge ran for president. The SUNSHINE was insulted for making a supposed error of a few notes of this article, "Votes Cast for Mr. Sledge," who was Mr. W. Butler's opponent at the time. Apparently the SUNSHINE, as other papers, used the weapon in hand to make ends meet; and so by this faultless little mistake added to what the malcontents had already alleged, lined us up in opposition to the regular head of the National Association, and from year to year for two years the bitter fight was waged. You know the occasion, and what the SUNSHINE said they claimed. And all this happened because these public officers did not desire the paper to criticise this work, their public service, which was and is a great mistake. We claim it our privilege to criticise every man or woman in a public position, and no personal animosity of feeling should obtain on either side. But this paper ought to be used for defence and explanation. Let us all profit by the mistakes of the past, and remember never to antagonize the press.

YULETIDE FOR 1920
The world has whirled its way around the sun once more, and we have come again to the Christmas season.
Prickly, glistening green holly leaves surfure the enlarged crayons of Great-Aunt Mary and Grandmother on the parlor walls. Berry blood drops starting out from under the fretful foliage, here and there.
A sprig of waxy mistletoe swings from the lamp in the hall. Crispy cold winter winds blow up and down the streets, with the dry sound of driven sand; but the fingers of the frost have drawn delightful curtains of crystal lace across all the window panes, to shut the chilly streets away from those in the warm home.
Over the snow-sheeted me headstones, roads and gates homes and that merry wess on until the whole heavens with the rainbow fabric.
Christmas bells! What they awaken in old hearts! the sleepy past, at the so their tangled heads out be sheets of yesterdays to bish half forgotten pictures.
Christmas is a season of to children, but to others without its faint, melodious choly, its lavender-scented which awakens at the sour Christmas bells and, perha the day all the more delight.

A clatter of cooking things comes up from the kitchen, accompanied by richly mingled smells of pies and cakes and hot spices.
There is an electric thrill in the homey atmosphere, and though the children have gone to bed, there is a patterning, rustling, whispering and giggling, suspicion abroad that to bed is not always to sleep.
Just Think of Christmas Eve
At last Mother and Father sit alone together beside the Florentine library table, under the lamp of painted parchment, and look into each other's eyes, half tired, half excited, wholly contented. Midnight booms out of the neighborhood clock tower, and it is Christmas Day.
Peace upon earth. Peace and good will to all.
Out of the family luminous skies a whispering host of snowflakes begins to fall and drift down across roof and road. They fall upon the warm hearts of men and quench the fires, but leave them warm, not chilled.
Year after year, how the magic of memory hallows this hour, and how the whole day is sweet with the perfume and keen with the color of unselfishness and love.
High and dim in church towers silver chimes count time in Sundays and feast days, weddings and funerals, until Christmas comes around to bring them the true gift of tongues.
There never is such rollicking, jollicking music in the bells as when their tongues are tossed against their vibrant metal throats upon a Christmas morn. From the very first silvery clashing chord, they seem to be weaving a misty fabric of warmth and color against the clear sky.

Over the snow-sheeted mounds and headstones, roads and gates and happy homes and that merry weaving goes on until the whole heavens are lined with the rainbow fabric.
Christmas bells! What memories they awaken in old hearts! And how the sleepy past, at the sound, push their tangled heads out between the sheets of yesterday to blink at the half forgotten pictures.
Christmas is a season of utter joy to children, but to others it is not without its faint, melodious, melanholy, its lavender-scented sadness, which awakens at the sounds of the Christmas bells and, perhaps, makes the day all the more delightful.
At least we will not flee from it, you and I, when the sound and echo commence to weave warp and woof across the Christmas sky.
Instead of wishing others a Merry Christmas, let's see that they get it.
Christmas is like a friendly conversation—who will not share it may not have it.
The very nicest Christmas gifts are those we should like to have for ourselves, but buy for others.
And, after all, Christmas is a state of mind, not a date on a calendar. Whoever will may keep Christmas the year round.
It is Christmas morn, and millions of stars of Bethlehem shine down from mothers' eyes, upon millions of kiddies' oracles, for unto us is born this day the Saviour of unselfishness and love. And that the sweet-scented, musical magic of the day may linger long with each and every or of the thousands of readers of this herer is my here-after Christmas will to all.

The little girls who will take part in the Folk Song Festival will wear white dresses and white hair bows. The little boys representing the Colored Soldier Boys of Uncle Sam will wear khaki suits. All children will meet at the Y. W. C. A. 828 Linden street, at three o'clock on Saturdays. Holiday week these children will meet every afternoon from three to four at the Fifteenth Street Church. All children are welcome.
Old and young are invited to participate in the Festival.
The Souvenir Program will contain the names of all patrons who are kind enough to purchase patrons' tickets in advance, that all the country may know who have helped to make an Oakland Festival a success.
Mme. Hackley is delighted with the public spirit of Oakland, and hopes that a permanent chorus will be organized to carry on this great work, and that perhaps R. Nathaniel Dett, the greatest American Negro composer, may be brought West later.
