THE PHOENIX TRIBUNE—ALWAYS IMPROVING APPROPRIATE A certain town has bought a new fire engine and the superintendent, after gathering all his men togeth- er, suggested that an appropriate motto should be placed over the sta. tion. The several suggestions were made. Finally one man arose and said: “I move the following motto— “May this fire engine be like the old maids in our village, always ready, but never called for.” MATCHLESS TEACHER Teacher: Willie, can you tell me how matches are made? Willie: No, ma'am. But I don't blame you for wanting to know. Why, what do you mean? Mother says you've been trying to make one for over a year. Ancient Chinese tortured prisoners by tickling the naked soles of their feet with straws. So started the ex- pression, “tickled to death.” SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1924 q g <q DODGE BROTHERS gq MOTOR VEHICLES q i q 4 Whether you buy a New or 4 Used Dodge Brothers Motor { Car you can count on its giving 4 you Dependable Service at { Low Cost 4 g a PRICES REDUCED, i Effective December st. 4 4 4 4 n x A ,7 —,. 17 4 McArthur Brothers THE SAME PERSON SAME DENTIST The patients who were treated at these offices a few years ago all remember the personal service and high standard of dentistry that they received at my hands. Dayman, national girl reserve director for the Y. W. C. A. With her were, Mrs. H. B. Wilkinson, Miss M. J. Maus, Miss Bennett and Miss Ewing. Mrs. M. M. Rodgers, director of the Colored girl reserve of the High school, introduced Miss Bennett, general secretary of the Phoenix Y. W. C. A., who in turn introduced the other speakers. Only brief remarks were made by Mrs. Wilkinson, Misses Ewing and Maus. Miss Dayman, in whose honor the reception was given, was the principal speaker. Miss Dayman had many interesting things to say of the contacts with girls which she constantly makes in her work, which takes her over all the territory west of the Mississippi. Her talk was an inspiration to the mothers as well as to the girl reserves, who had gathered to pay tribute to this national character. The reception, which was held at the A. M. E. church, was opened with singing by the girl reserves. Several appropriate numbers were rendered to the delight of all present. Following Miss Dayman's address, Mrs. Rodgers introduced Mrs. W. C. Hackett, who responded in a happy vein to the remarks made by the distinguished visitor. Miss Bobbie Stearns rendered a vocal number, after which an opportunity was given for all to meet Miss Dayman and the other visitors. Only the members of girl reserves and women interested in the girl reserve club of Phoenix, the ministers and "ye scribe" were present to meet these distinguished visitors and listen to the message delivered by Miss Esther A. Dayman. Presiding Elder Visits The Rev. H. A. Wells, presiding elder of this district of the Colorado conference of the A. M. E. church, spent Saturday in Phoenix, visiting the local pastor, Rev. Harbert and family. Dr. Wells left Saturday evening over the Santa Fe for Winslow and other northern points. LADIES. ATTENTION! Mrs. M. E. IN THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS DAY brings us the consciousness that whatever our personal animosities may be, whatever the strife between nations—merely neighborhood quarrels greatly magnified—there is this sublime occasion devoted to peace and good will. Its spirit is the lamp which lights to higher life; its influence largely supports civilization and prevents a lapse into barbarity. Christmas spirit means Christian spirit. In testing its effect, one has only to reflect upon the positions of races, the most advanced being those of Christendom. China, the oldest entity among peoples, has an admirable occasion upon which the citizens strive to liquidate all their debts. It is a national pay-up day, and in spirit somewhat resembles our Christmas. In Japan they have an annual event somewhat like our New Year's celebration during which the people go about expressing good will and promoting good cheer. But Christmas has a more elevating effect than either, in that it not only typifies peace and good will, but carries the essence of unselfishness and pure love, the most common expression being the bestowal of gifts. When the Christmas influence gains to the point that its spirit shall permeate the affairs of every day in the year, the millennium will have arrived. We have this day, and if we mar not its ideal its leaven will produce other days of the kind. In the making of a newspaper we have an opportunity to view the many forces operating upon the character of humanity. We see the good and bad, the sincere and insincere, the selfish and unselfish. We believe the leaven of good is more active than that of the opposed forces. If we have been able to assist the right, much has been due to your co-operation and we earnestly solicit a continuation of the same. Our Christmas greeting to you is one of optimism, good cheer and hearty good wishes. PROMISE YOURSELF To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel there is something in them. To look on the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and to have a smile ready for every living creature you meet. To give so such time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticise others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world—not in loud words but in great deeds. To live in the faith that the world is on your side as long as you are true to the best that is in you.
