LOUIS, Mo., Dec. 11—As a result of much talk and gossip, growing out of charges and countercharges made by Miss Rose L. Edwards and Rev. G. W. Becton, a conference was held Thursday at the office of Atty. S. E. Garner, to which was invited a representative group of men and women, for the purpose of hearing the story of both parties face to face. Quita a deal of public interest had been manifested in the rumors; and therefore a large crowd, other than those invited, were on hand early, to hear what had been whispered "a scandal." Miss Edwards, who is a divorcee, charged that Rev. Becton made love to her during some of his private interviews, and made her believe he was going to marry her. Letters were shown purporting to be from Rev. Becton, addressing Miss Edwards in the most endearing terms. In a statement made before the committee, Miss Edwards said, that the Rev. Becton, during one of his interviews, raved over her beauty and said that her mother, whose picture he held in his hand at the time, looked like a queen. She further stated that she had been a loyal member of Central Baptist church for eleven years, and gave one-tenth of her income to the church, and was an officer in several of the church auxiliaries, up until she was excluded, after she had told of her relations with Rev. Becton. Faced by his accuser, Rev. Becton, when called upon to make a statement, with bowed head, sang softly "I Need Thee Every Hour," at the conclusion of which he quickly raised his head and said that he would tell the truth in the matter, as he was amenable only to God. In his statement before the committee, he emphatically denied that he had written the letters which were shown by Miss Edwards. He said that the signatures to the letters, while having some similarity of his, were a forgery. He named a young man, formerly in his employ, as an accomplice in the forgery. During the time Rev. Becton was making his statements before the committee, he frequently stamped his feet and clapped his hands as is characteristic of him during his PHOENIX TRIBUNE—ALWAYS IMPROVING sermons. His actions, which got beyond the control of the chairman of the meeting, caused the committee to adjourn without any formal action. Opinion seemed to be divided in the matter, as there were many who took the position that the "woman in the case" had been mistreated and taken advantage of, while others were inclined to share the minister's viewpoint that it was a case of a woman's infatuation, without just cause, and the relentless hand of a woman's "vengeance." Rev. Becton is now conducting revival meetings at Central Baptist Church, of which the Rev. Geo. E. Stevens is pastor. The "zero hour" has been advanced, it is announced. Rural carriers will make no deliveries on Christmas and city carriers will make one delivery on Christmas. It is recommended that Christmas parcels be mailed between December 10 and December 20. It is urged also that Christmas cards be mailed early, lest they be not delivered until after the event. The matter of delayed shopping and delayed mailing is mainly a habit. Some folks are constitutionally slow. To be beforehanded in any action is the exception rather than the rule. While it may be practically impossible to induce some to act early, if those who are amenable to suggestion do, the end is gained by having at least a part of the business out of the way before the procrastinating ones come along. Thus the congestion which might otherwise result is in some measure avoided. It would be easier to shop early and mail early than to delay until the crowds are greater, but habit causes some of us to put off a task as long as possible.
