DAYS OF YORE Anybody ever hear a flapper sing "Home, Sweet Home?" Christmas savings funds are ripe enough to pick. Granddad may have been a sod buster, but not on the golf links. That big hole in the family budget is where the turkey went through. Who remembers when a girl with an unattractive face had to let it go at that? College girls are taking up boxing. They wrestle, also, but it is called dancing. Mother kept that school-girl complexion by occasionally walking five or ten miles past a lot of drug stores. Cheese, says a dietitian, is one of the oldest of foods, and no archaeological expedition was needed to unearth that fact. Whatever became of the old-fashioned girl who, at this time of year, had a dresser drawer full of doilies and fancy work prepared for Christmas giving? The publicity which this locality has so sorely needed is now being sent broadcast throughout the country and as a result every day brings new people and new money to our gates. We are getting our house in order to take care of the increasing population and we have many reasons to believe that we are entering a new phase in our community life. Building permits show a staggering increase; the tax rate for Phoenix is exceptionally low. Bank Clearings and general business conditions reflect our good fortune. Not that this plan- mung is ever hard work, even if you go at it with all your might and main; because, as every boy and girl knows, when you do anything to make anyone happy, it is never hard work, and the more patience and skill you have to employ in do- ing it, the more fun it is. If you wera to ask him face to face, Santa Claus would tell you that a lot of people miss half the fun of Christmas because they for- get that it isn’t what is given that counts, but how the thing 1s given. He would tell you that what a thing eosts, or how much it shines, has nothing to do with it. What really counts is how much affection, kind- ness and well-wishing you put into it. It’s what you are, and not what the gift is that counts. That’s why Christmas is such a wonderful sea- son; and that is why most people who like Santa Claus and Christmas, try to plan and get ready for this great day so that they may have most of themselves to give when that day comes. Santa Claus never yet waited till the last minute and then scurried around and wondered what he would do about this and about that. You can guess from the stories they tell about him, and from the way he looks, that he is the kind who does things when they ought to be done— quite a while before the last min- ute. And in these things, it is well! to follow Santa’s example. This issue of the Tribune is pre- sented as your Christmas Shopping Guide. TEACHING Teaching is the noblest of profes- sions and the most important. But the value of the teacher’s service has never been truly appreciated. The teacher occupies the place of the parents for many a child, and his or her selection should be a mat- ter of the gravest concern to the Page Five community. School teaching is a heroic business. The teacher comes into the community as a total strang- er. Usually nobody gives any spe- cial word of welcome. The board of education, parents and pupils all con- stitute ‘themselves official observers. The big majority of teachers are the best of folks and they deserve kindly consideration. The keynote of our principles is the belief that everyone is entitled to the full benefits of the best that dental science has to offer. To this end, we have adopted modern business methods and economies which materially reduce dental costs. This, together with the employment of the most modern and effective methods in all dental operations, the conservation of the patient's time and the fact that the highest type of dentistry is rigidly maintained at all times, has established this greatest of assets—public confidence. An index to the measure of this public confidence and acceptance of our principles is best reflected in the fact that ours is the largest dental practice in this State—there must be a reason! LOUIS, Mo., Dec. 11—As a result of much talk and gossip, growing out of charges and countercharges made by Miss Rose L. Edwards and Rev. G. W. Becton, a conference was held Thursday at the office of Atty. S. E. Garner, to which was invited a representative group of men and women, for the purpose of hearing the story of both parties face to face. Quita a deal of public interest had been manifested in the rumors; and therefore a large crowd, other than those invited, were on hand early, to hear what had been whispered "a scandal." Miss Edwards, who is a divorcee, charged that Rev. Becton made love to her during some of his private interviews, and made her believe he was going to marry her. Letters were shown purporting to be from Rev. Becton, addressing Miss Edwards in the most endearing terms. In a statement made before the committee, Miss Edwards said, that the Rev. Becton, during one of his interviews, raved over her beauty and said that her mother, whose picture he held in his hand at the time, looked like a queen. She further stated that she had been a loyal member of Central Baptist church for eleven years, and gave one-tenth of her income to the church, and was an officer in several of the church auxiliaries, up until she was excluded, after she had told of her relations with Rev. Becton. Faced by his accuser, Rev. Becton, when called upon to make a statement, with bowed head, sang softly "I Need Thee Every Hour," at the conclusion of which he quickly raised his head and said that he would tell the truth in the matter, as he was amenable only to God. In his statement before the committee, he emphatically denied that he had written the letters which were shown by Miss Edwards. He said that the signatures to the letters, while having some similarity of his, were a forgery. He named a young man, formerly in his employ, as an accomplice in the forgery. During the time Rev. Becton was making his statements before the committee, he frequently stamped his feet and clapped his hands as is characteristic of him during his PHOENIX TRIBUNE—ALWAYS IMPROVING sermons. His actions, which got beyond the control of the chairman of the meeting, caused the committee to adjourn without any formal action. Opinion seemed to be divided in the matter, as there were many who took the position that the "woman in the case" had been mistreated and taken advantage of, while others were inclined to share the minister's viewpoint that it was a case of a woman's infatuation, without just cause, and the relentless hand of a woman's "vengeance." Rev. Becton is now conducting revival meetings at Central Baptist Church, of which the Rev. Geo. E. Stevens is pastor. Mailing Earlier The "Mail Early"urgings promulgated last year by the postoffice department met with a gratifying response. Though reasonable success was attained, the goal is set still higher for this year. "MailEarlier" might be this year's slogan. The purpose is to relieve postal employes of the overwhelming last-minute rush of former years by distributing the handling of parcels over a longer period, entirely eliminating the peak of the load from Christmas itself. The "zero hour" has been advanced, it is announced. Rural carriers will make no deliveries on Christmas and city carriers will make one delivery on Christmas. It is recommended that Christmas parcels be mailed between December 10 and December 20. It is urged also that Christmas cards be mailed early, lest they be not delivered until after the event. The matter of delayed shopping and delayed mailing is mainly a habit. Some folks are constitutionally slow. To be beforehanded in any action is the exception rather than the rule. While it may be practically impossible to induce some to act early, if those who are amenable to suggestion do, the end is gained by having at least a part of the business out of the way before the procrastinating ones come along. Thus the congestion which might otherwise result is in some measure avoided. It would be easier to shop early and mail early than to delay until the crowds are greater, but habit causes some of us to put off a task as long as possible. It is the correction of a bad habit which Page Seven the postoffice department is seeking.
