12th Anniversary Number and Easter Special An Advertisement In The Tribune Is A Direct Personal Appeal To Colored People WE ORIGINATE—OTHERS IMITATE VOL. XII—NO. 394 BOY KILLED TRYING TO GET HIS CAP JONESVILLE, S.C.—James Smith, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Smith, was killed here on Friday afternoon, when a window at a local school fell on his head. Jimmie, as the boy was known, in his haste to get home, had left his cap in the school room and returned for it. Finding the door locked, he climbed in the widnow. As he climbed out the window fell, striking him with such force that he was killed. Other children had gone home and it was several hours later before the body was discovered. The child was a favorite among his companions ,who were grief-stricken when they learned of his death. WIFEY GETS DIVORCE HUBBY DANCES JIG CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — William Hawkes disturbed the equilibrium of Judge Arthur E. Beane, when he danced a jig in the corridor of the Middlesix Probate Court when his wife ,Mrs. Lillian M. Hawkes, was granted a divorce a few minutes before. Hawkes did not contest the suit but was present as a spectator giving voice to his feelings after the decision. Hawkes dumfounded the spectators by executing a few spontaneous dance steps in front of the doors of the courtroom. At the results of the finding, "right away quick" he began to make "whoopee." MEN FATALLY BURNED NEW ORLEANS, La. - Charles Richard and Allen Cmenents will probably die as a result of burns sustained when an oil stove in the room in which the two were sleeping exploded. Physicians hold little hope of their recovery. PHOENIX, ARIZONA, RCF, 1929 PREACHERS FIGHT; ONE IS STABBED Birmingham.—Excitement ran high on Fourth avenue and Seventeenth street, north, Monday—the section known as headquarters for a large number of preaches, when Rev. Cook, a Baptist minister it is said, used his barlow on the neck of Rev. N. P. Stovall, another minister of the same faith. It was reported from various sources that Rev. Stovall could not possibly live as Rev. Crook had severed an artery in his neck. The trouble started, according to eye witness, out of a dispute of the two national Baptist conventions and representations in these bodies. The charge that the ministers were fighting over liquor is denied and not verified by any person. Rev. Mr. Crook states that the Rev. Stovall nagged him and used abusive language and that he was greatly annoyed and defended himself against the attack of his fellow-minister. Rev. Crook is in the county jail and Rev. Stovall in the Hillman hospital, and it is learned that he is out of danger. Ministers state that Rev. Crook is of excellent character and his action was out of fear of Rev. Stovall. TO THE VOTERS OF PHOENIX: I take this means of endorsing the candidacy of David P. Kimball for the office of City Commissioner, and in such connection I desire to make the following statement: First, he is a successful business man, and therefore capable. Second, he stands unquestionably for a bigger and better and greater Phoenix. Third. His candidacy is not fostered or promoted by any clicque or combination. Fourth. He is honest, fearless and devoted to your best interests. Signed: J. G. TARBELL. PRICE $2.50 A YEAR THE CITY ELECTION Tuesday, April 2nd, the citizens of Phoenix will choose two commissioners who will assist in directing the affairs of this municipality for the next two years. This gives promise of being one of the hottest elections ever held in Phoenix and some one may be surprised when final count is made. Tribune readers are normal intelligent human beings fully capable of thinking for themselves. They have learned to study the records of candidates and make their decisions accordingly. The only way accurately to judge the future is by the past, and this rule applies to candidates as well as to any other person. We would not attempt to advise you how to cast your ballot on Tuesday, our duty as we see it is to inform you of the merits of the various candidates and let you vote your convictions. The best way to judge the merits of a candidate or ticket is to ascertain the type of workers supporting a candidate or ticket. 'Tis said that birds of a feather flock together. Southside Tea Garden Mrs. Chas. G. Johnson of Tempe, whose home is situated on the National highway, announces the opening of a tea garden at her home, and invites the general public to come and be served. Mrs. Johnson is a cateress of the New England style and you are assured of appetizing and tempting meals. Back from Washington The Rev. F. W. Haynes, pastor of the C. M. E. church, returned last week from the east. He visited Washington, Cleveland and other cities of more or less importance during his stay. Rev. Mack Allen and Rev. J. L. Arnold also made the trip to Washington to attend the inauguration and the Ministerial Alliance. PHOENIX TRIBUNE ESTABLISHED IN 1918 PUBLISHED BY THE TRIBUNE PUBLISHING CO. PHOENIX, ARIZONA A. R. SMITH, MANAGING EDITOR Advertising Rates on Application Subscription, per year.....$2.50 1739 E. Adams St. Phone 6250 OUR 12TH ANNIVERSARY Today the Phoenix Tribune enters upon its twelfth year of continuous publication in the city of Phoenix, county of Maricopa, state of Arizona. In the beginning the management of the Tribune adopted a policy of clean, conservative, reliable journalism and without equivocation or evasion, this policy has been religiously adhered to. The Tribune's family of readers has grown from a few hundred to many thousands and it is a source of pleasure to be in touch with so large a number of real live human beings. Our interests are mutual and long ago this group of readers learned to look upon the Tribune as the champion of the rights of the people. It has been our endeavor to improve as we grew, and in this we feel that we have succeeded admirably. The Tribune today is more popular than ever before, and the eagnerness with which it is received by subscribers proves this fact beyond a shadow of a doubt. We plan to make this the banner year of the Tribune, giving our subscribers a bigger and better journal in every way. It is a known fact that the value of a pulication as an advertising medium is based on two things —circulation and readers' interest. Since this is true, we shall continue to make the Tribune more and more interesting to its readers, while adding to our list of subscribers. It would be the basest form of ingratitude were we to end this editorial without thanking our advertisers as well as our subscribers who have materially assisted us during all three years in producing the Tribune. In a word, we thank you one and all, who in any way assisted in making the Tribune the great and influential paper it is today. --- PHOENIX TRIBUNE—ALWAYS IMPROVING Page Three The Home of The Famous "Kuppenheimer" Good Clothes And Everything Else in High Grade Men's Wear THE HUB David P. TEACHER At a teacher's institute the story was told of a certain young man recently speeding along the road when he caught up to a party of children on their way to school. He asked them if they cared to ride and for an answer they piled into his Ford until it was so completely filled that one little gir had to sit on the driver's lap. She was a plump little thing and the driver cuddled her close to keep her away from the steering wheel "Do you like school?" he asked. the little girl replied. "I haven't missed a day this year." "Yes, yes." "Good little girl," said the driver kissing her soft cheek. "Do you like your teacher?" "Yes sir," said the girl, "I'm the teacher." An the Ford darn near went into the ditch!
