"HERE SHALL THE PRESS, THE PEOPLE'S RIGHTS MAINTAIN, UNAWED BY INFLUENCE AND UNUNIRED BY GAIN." The Pioneer ESTABLISHED 1882. Anecdotal Literature By W. G. BY W. G. THE SUPREME OBJECT OF ATTRACTION. An old minister, while one day deeply engaged in his studies, was suddenly interrupted by the entrance of his wife, and asking him the question, "Do you think we shall be known to each other in heaven?" Without hesitation he replied. "To be sure we shall." "Do you think we shall know less then than we do here?" After a momentary pause, he continued, "But I may be a thousand years by your side in heaven without having seen you; for the first thing which will attract my notice when I arrive there will be my dear Savior; and I cannot tell when I shalt be for a moment induced to look at any other object." BOYCOTT. Boycotting is a species of conspiracy, and the term is derived from Capt. Boycott, a conspicuous victim of conspiracy. He was an agent of Lord Erne of Connemara, Ireland. As agent he had to serve notice to quit on the tenants, who retaliated by inducing the population for miles around, to refuse to have anything to do with him. Armed constables were called in to protect him and the new tenants. The term, therefore, originally signified a conspiracy to ruin the business of a person by violent interruption of his relations with others. It has been defined by an American judge as "a combination of many to cause loss to one person by coercing others, against their will, to withdraw from him their patronage. A boycott, even when accompanied by violence or intimidation, has been pronounced as unlawful by many courts. But when accompanied by violence it is a criminal offence at common law. GUILTY CONSCIENCE A clergyman walked into the churchyard, one day, as the sexton was digging a grave, and on his throwing up a skull, the minister picked it up, and examining it, found a headless nail in the temple, which he drew out and put it in his pocket, asking the sexton whether he knew whose skull it was; he answered that it was a man's who had gone to bed drunk, and was found dead in his bed next morning. "Is his wife living yet and if so what is her character?" asked the minister. The sexton said she was, and her character was fairly good, only her neighbors blamed her for marrying the day after her husband's funeral. The minister thereupon paid the woman a seemingly pastoral visit, and, among other questions, asked her of what sickness her husband died. She giving him the same account as the sexton, he produced the nail, and asked her "Woman do you know this?" She was struck with horror and instantly confessed she had murdered her husband. She was tried and executed. * * THE GIRLS AS THEY WERE. Backward! turn backward. O Time in your flight, and give us a maiden dressed proper and right. We are too weary of switches and rate. Burke clusters, and peach-baskets, wads of jute hair in a horrible pile, stacked on their heads to the height of a mile. Something is wrong with the maidens. Give us the girlies we once knew of yore, whose curls didn't come from hair dressing stores,—maidens who dressed with sense, and just as Dame Nature intended. Give us a girl with a figure her own and fashioned divinely by Nature alone. Oh! give us the girls as they used to appear. THE BOY SCOUT MOVEMENT. While the momentum behind the Boy Scout movement has been of very recent origin, there are already over 500,000 boys interested at the present time. During the past summer, camping has been the strongest feature of Scout Work. Within the past few weeks, a prominent member of Rhode Island State Legislature has offered a prize to be contested for by Boy Scouts. The Woonsocket, R. I., Boy Scouts are equipped with Stevens Little Scout Rifles—fitted with an extra barrel made so it cannot be fired—for drilling and parade purposes. Because of this special barrel there is no violation of law prohibiting carrying firearms on the street. The barrel is interchangeable with regular barrel for target practice, in which the Woonsocket Boy Scouts have become very proficient. This Boy Scout organization has given Stevens Little Scout Rifles a thorough test and is well pleased. The Stevens is very desirable because of light weight, simple mechanism and semi-military appearance. Open sights with which these Rifles are equipped are a fair test for the boy's eye. One twelve year old Boy Scout in a string of five shots put two in inner circle of Bulls Eye—counting 25 and another in the 24 circle. For drill work, the Little Scout Rifle, manufactured by J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co., is just right. On parade the boys make a very fine appearance. Apply to J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co., Chicpee Falls, Mass., for details of the interesting Boy Scout Movement and descriptive matter on Stevens Little Scout Rifles. MIDNIGHT IN THE OZARKS and yet eleppele Hitam Scranton, of Clay City, Ill., coughed and coughed. He was in the mountains on the advice of five doctors, who said he bad consumption, but found no help in the climate, and started home. Hearing of Dr. King's New Discovery, he began to use it. "I believe it saved my life," he writes "for it made a new man of me, so that I can now do good work again." For all lung diseases, cough, colde, la grippe, asthma, croup, whooping cough, hay fever, hemorrhages, hoarseness or quinny, its the best known remedy. Price 50c and $1.00 Trial bottle free. Guaranteed by all druggists. The Bookkeeper or Stenographer who has the recommendation of the Mountain State Business College, Parkersburg, W. Va, can always secure employment. Alderman, Professor of Horticulture, West Virginia University. The time is now at hand when the fruit grower should consider the purchase of trees for his fall or spring planting. The demand for trees has become so great that the overworked nurseryman from Malta to Oregon are unable to furnish an adequate supply in all varieties. Many of them have already contracted for over half of their stock. If you are looking for first class trees and are at all particular about getting the varieties ordered it would be advisable to arrange your purchase as soon as possible. Visit the Nursery. If you are buying a wood shed order it would pay to visit the nursery and select the trees before they are dug. Most nurserymen will allow a purchaser to go through their blocks and mark the trees he wishes to buy. In this way one may secure the most vigorous and best shaped trees in the lot, and can be reasonably sure that they will be true to name, for most of the variety mixtures are made in the confusion of the packing shed. Insist that your trees shall not be dug until the leaves have nearly all fallen, for this means that the buds are well ripened and that the wood is hard and mature. Much has been spoken and written about the adaptability of buying trees from nearby nurseries where conditions are similar to those in your orchard. While this is a factor that it might be well to consider, it is of far more importance to secure a good tree with a good root system. There is much evidence to show that it matters little from what part of the country a tree comes, provided it is healthy, vigorous and has not been injured in digging or shipping. Yearlings or Two-Year-Olds With apples it is always an unsettled question whether it is better to buy straight whips one year old or move expensive two-year-old trees on which the main branches are already started. The advantages in favor of the smaller trees are, first, cheapness; second, small root systems which will require only a small hole at planting time; third, the head may be formed at any height to suit the grower's fancy; fourth, the root systems receive less injury in digging than do those of larger trees. The advantages of the two-year-olds are, first, trees with well formed heads may be schooled thereby insuring uniform and symmetrical orchard trees; second, they will probably reach bearing size a year sooner than a one-year-old tree; third, it is easier to detect crown gall or hairy root upon them than upon yearlings. Between first class trees of both ages the two-year-olds are the most desirable. It is, however, sometimes difficult to get good two-year-olds because the nursery block has been sorted over the previous year and the beet trees sold are yearlings. Between a first class yearling and a second grade two-year-old, the younger tree would undoubtedly be the better. Never buy three or four year-old trees because these are the culks of previous years which were so weak and small that they had to be grown the extra season or two in order to bring them to a marketable size. Crown Gall. The most prevalent disease that attacks nursery trees, and against which purchasers should be on their guard, is Crown gall or Hairy Root, the two names coming from the two distinctive forms of the same disease. There are some differences of opinion among plant pathologists regarding the ultimate effects of this disease upon orchard trees, but all agree that it is very unsafe to plant intested stock. Make no contract or arrangement with a nurseryman which will not allow you to throw out all trees that show any sign of the disease. The wooly aphis causes small irregular swellings to appear upon the roots that might be mistaken for small galls, but inasmuch as the aphis is to be more dreaded than Press. BY INFLUENCE AND UNBRIDED H TOBER 21. 1911. V the aforementioned disease, have no hesitation about discarding these trees also. A Few Things Which Will Make the Results of the Recipes More Exact and Be of Help to Those Scales which can be bought at any hardware store for from $1.50 in %2 are a great help in the canning season, it is very hard to measure fruits of different sizes so that the proportion of fruit to sugar is correct, whereas the irregular size of the fruit makes no difference in determining its weight. In this day of short weights the scales are of advantage in checking up the amount purchased. The flat pliable knife, called a spatula, enables one to clean out the bowl more thoroughly than any other way. It can also be used very satisfactorily for reusing up recipes which do not require much stirring, such as getting the cough ready to knead for bread, the making of an omelet or a griddle cake. This knife can be older than any hardware store for these expensive to thirty-five cents. After having once used it you will wonder how you ever got along without it. RACHEL H. COLWELL, West Virginia University. WHAT IS YOUR FAMILY If your family is worth the best you can afford in house and food and clothes, is it not worth the best reading as well? B. & O's. Fine New Coaches B. & O's. Fine New Coaches The steel passenger coaches ordered by the Baltimore and Ohio several months ago are being delivered and placed in service on the through trains between New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis. The orders provide for 20 smoking cars and 30 day coaches together with 15 steel postal cars and 10 steel baggage cars. The new steel coaches have a seating capacity of 80 passengers, and smoking cars a capacity of seventy-two passengers. The new steel passenger coaches are a late development and naturally each new output from the shops have many very practical improvements and features not found in the earlier cars. The cars now being received by the B. & O are considered superior to any steel cars which have yet been constructed. The objectionable features found in the earlier steel cars, such as susceptibility to heat and cold and the unusual noise of the metal have been eliminated in their construction. The steel construction includes not only the steel frame work and the trucks but the outside sheathing as well. The trucks are made of one piece cast steel with steel wheels of mostimable strength. The floors are constructed of steel, over which is placed a layer of concrete to deaden the noise and to strengthen the construction. In all the fixtures and appliances every consideration is given to the comfort and health of occupants of the cars. The sanitary drinking water tank is another desirable special feature. The water and ice are in separate compartments, the water being forced into the tanks through pipes under the car, preventing employees from coming in contact with it. The ice is in a separate compartment also and does not touch the water, consequently the drinking tanks are as nearly sanitary as it is possible to make them. The interior finish of the steel care is worthy of special note. The ceiling and paneling below the windows are made of an imported fireproof composition which not only makes a fine finish but renders the interior of the car impervious to noise from the outside. This agassite presents the same strength and fire resistance as do steel, being even more desirable in that it has insulation qualities. The upper portions of the interior of the cars are of mahogany finish, giving them a rich and attractive appearance. The cars are insulated throughout. The outside sheathing of steel is welded to the steel frame, inside of which is the insulation material, with the mahogany finish above and the oakwood below. The cracking cars are 60 feet in length. The seats and backs are upholstered in plain heavy leather, a most desirable finish. The day coaches are 70 feet in length. The seats and backs of these cars are upholstered in plush, and the color effects of mahogany and light green present a delightful harmony of colors. All of these cars are equipped with electric lights and fans. They are considered the strongest, easiest riding and the most cheerful cars that have yet been built.
