IODIDE OF NITROGEN.
Explosives are solids which under certain conditions suddenly change into heated gas occupying many times the original space of the solids.
Ordinary gunpowder when fired turns into gas, of which the volume is 4,000 times as great as that of the powder. No wonder the bullet in front of it leaves the muzzle of the rifle in a hurry.
Today there are scores, even hundreds, of different sorts of explosives known to science. Some, such as lyddite, require a very considerable shock to explode them. Others, such as nitroglycerin, are fearfully dangerous to handle, for a few extra degrees of warmth or a very slight jar is sufficient to turn them instantly into gas.
Of the latter type there is nothing quite so unstable as fodile of nitrogen. It has to be made in alcohol. When allowed to dry it appears as a brown powder, and so unstable is this powder that a touch with a feather will set it off. The experiment has been tried of leaving a few grains upon a table mixed with a few grains of sugar. The first bluebottle that threw on the table and began to crawl among the grains caused an explosion. The mere jarring of the air by a loud shout or a heavy footstep is sufficient to detonate fodile of nitrogen, and it need hardly be added that no one in his senses would attempt to make this terrible stuff. To do so in any quantity would be equivalent to committing suicide.—Pearson's Weekly.
BRINGING UP CHK-DREN.
There Are Some Curious Customs In This Queer World.
There has been much discussion over the proper bringing up of children, but ideas continue to differ. And the farther you get away from home the stranger the ideas seem.
The Filipino father cries out with proud delight as his three-year old girl baby takes her puff at her first clear
Among the Seri Indians of the gulf of California the father is the last one expected to have any influence on the children. The mother rules the younger members of the family, and when she must enforce her authority by physical force she calls, not on the father, but on one of her brothers or some other male adult of her family. The father must never chastise his children.
A Navajo father administers punishment to his children very much as any other father does, but the Navajo boy has a means of protection denied to white boys. He has only to catch a rat by his own unaided efforts. From the moment he has accomplished this feat, no matter how young he may be, his father may not lay hands on him.
The children of the Point Barrow Eskimos have special training in politeness to foreigners. In conversing with strangers who make mistakes in the native dialect children must carefully note those mistakes and repeat them, even to imitating the wrong pronunciation of words. To speak correctly in such a case is likely to bring punishment from the parent of the child. New York Sun.
Without Prejudice.
A party of young men and women, members of a sketching club, were motoring along a country road. Just within the fence on the left grew innumerable graceful stalks, each bearing globes of pale green that shaded into gray and purple.
"How enchanting!" exclaimed one young woman.
"Do tell us," said another young woman, equally enthusiastic, to a gardener standing near, "what those beau-oo-tiful things are."
"Them? Them's calons gone to seed."—New York Times.
Rice In Costa Rica
Rice is one of the most important articles of food used in Costa Rica. It is eaten at least twice a day by every inhabitant of the republic. The per capita consumption of rice in Costa Rica is thus at least 100 pounds per year and the total amount of rice consumed over 30,000,000 pounds per year.—Exchange.

J. W. Harmon, Esq., Parsons, W. Va., "our next congressman," circulated this week in this neck of the woods mixing and mingling with the electorate. We have for many years known him. His head clear, his brain fertile, his heart warm and friendly. A product of Pendleton county; brought up on the farm where nature was learned, its Maker honored and manhood respected—good enough timber for a congressman.
As to the lynching of Leo Frank public opioion differs. Some blame it on the courts, contending that their parleys and delays agravate and incite such rash acts. Riches saved White's murderer and New York's former police lieutenant of the strong arm squad by money almost cheated the electric chair. It is generally believed that Frank was guilty. Guilty or not the black crime that hurled him into eternity, will be settled here and there.
The masters who were brutal to slaves were also, as a rule, brutal to their own, and the whole system of lynching got its inception from it, and the very fact that many southern officials fear mobs, is evidence of the best that the whites are to be sure victims of mob vengeance.
If a person could and would kill the Son of God, who died that mankind might live forever, and in the face of the act, make great pretensions and bold declarations of his love for his Father, what wo ld and should a sane man think of him? On the same hypothesis, how can the white men of the South who have raped, and disgraced millions of colored women boast of loving their own women to that extent, they must and will kill in and out of court on allegations of wrongs to them?
It's the hottest lie out of the infernal regions, and the poor Northenershave listened to its cunning seduction, until they have believed these infamous lies, gone back on the Negroes whom they boasted they freed, and whose wives, mothers and sisters "went down South," taugh them, lived with them and associated with them for years and not one was ever insulted, as was true of the South's women who were protected and cared for by their slaves. One who lies can have no love for truth. The Southern white man has made the Southern white woman his pinnacle on which to preach the gospel of purity in order to make the world condone their lynching—when in reality deep rooted prejudice is the cause and Frank's foul murder will work out good results.
Mr. Slaton spoke in California as he would not have done in his home state, for he is afraid of the mob that took Frank's life. Southern officials should be the last to palliate lynching by spectacularly appealing to their dying love for the purity of their womanhood. These virtue blatherskites have that state so mixed up with black women's blood you can't tell who is who and which is which.
A state that legislates 10 year old girls into factories; makes the age of girls 10 years for lustful consent and permits girls of 12 to be "industrial slaves," ought to have its lips silenced with paralysis. However count on this one fact, that the great Ruler of the Universe is just, and will work things out right in due time.

SERIAL STORY OF INTEREST. A serial story constructed along entirely new lines will begin in the North American for Thursday, August 26, and be continued a chapter a day.
The title of the story is "Neal of the Navy"; the author is William Hamilton Osborne, one of the leading American creators of fiction. Incident after incident of the most thrilling character combine to make the story grip the attention of the reader, and motion pictures based upon these incidents will be shown in leading theaters, thus heightening the interest of the reader.
The first episode of the story—the first six instalments and the first two reels of the motion picture are based upon the catastrophe of Mount Pelee, and so successfully have they been written and planned that they send the story off at a rattling gait. The picture of the scenes described will include many feet of real volcanic eruption, one of the most marvelous bits of action ever shown on the screen.
"Neal of the Navy" represents another departure. Never before has a writer of the standing of Mr. Osborne written an original story with the purpose of having it screened. It marks a new departure and a new class of motion-picture play.
The 12th of September next, the people of Smithfield will hold an all-day meeting in the grove.
The report is out that fish are biting and "Dick" Murphy who always hooks and loses the biggest fish in the river, is oiling and filing his old antiquated hooks and bragging about his old goohered horse-hair line.
If you are a new housekeeper and this is your first season then you may not know some of these old-fashioned rules that have been tried and never have been found to fail. If iron rust gets on white clothing, as it is apt to do in the summer time, squeeze lemon juice on the spots and and then rub in plenty of salt and put the garment where the sun will shine on it.
The thermometer fell 31 degrees this week and some said: our "good old Summer-time" has gone.
"I wish, John," she said regretfully. "I had had sense enough not to destroy all the letters you wrote me during the year and a half of your courtship."
He smiled in a gratified way. "I knew you would regret that some time," he said.
"Indeed I do," she replied. "I need a little change the worst sort of way, and the man who bays rags and old paper was here today. How wasteful we are in our youth!"
He looked at her reproachfully, and almost involuntarily his hand sought his pocketbook. It is seldom, indeed, that a resourceful woman has to make a direct request for money.—Chicago Post.
Chserful Inducements
The following advertisement once appeared in the London Post: "A rock built, crenelated castle, buffeted by the Atlantic surge, at one of the most romantic and dreaded points of our ironbound coast, in full view of the Death stone; shipwrecks frequent, corpses common; three reception and seven bedrooms; every modern convenience; 10 guineas a week. Address," etc.

And For Three Summers Mrs. Vincent Was Unable to Attend to Any of Her Housework.
Pleasant Hill, N. C.—"I suffered for three summers," writes Mrs. Walter Vincent, of this town, "and the third and last time, was my worst.
I had dreadful nervous headaches and prostration, and was scarcely able to walk about. Could not do any of my housework.

I was certainly in a dreadful state of health, when I finally decided to try Cardui, the woman's tonic, and I firmly

Retold For Choir Singers.
One of the wealthy members of a fashionable church in Boston approached her pastor with the complaint that she was greatly disturbed by one of her neighbors.
"It's positively unbearable," said she.
"That man in the pew in front of us destroys all my devotional and pious feelings when he attempts to sing. Couldn't you ask him to change his pew?"
The good pastor was sorely perplexed. After a few moments' reflection he said:
"Well, I naturally would feel a little delicacy on that score, more especially as I would have to give a reason. But I will tell you what I might do." Here the pastor's face became illuminated with a happy thought. "I might ask him to join the choir."—Harper's Magazine.
Hard Luck.
"People can talk of their troubles," said Mrs. Wagleigh, "but I think Mrs. Jones has the hardest luck of any one. She is absolutely deprived by nature of enjoying a woman's greatest pleasure. She's a deaf mute and can't talk. She can only use her hands. Now, if that isn't awful tell me what is?" Mr. Wagleigh looked up from his evening paper. "I met her husband this afternoon," he said, "and he was tickled to pieces. His wife cut her fingers with the bread knife yesterday, and now she can't talk at all."—New York Telegram.
He Saw a Great Light
Wrecks on the coast of Cornwall England, were once a source of revenue to the natives. The Cornish folk were great smugglers too. The Rev, R. S. Hawker had in his service as man of all work old Tristram Pentire, the last of the smugglers. One day he made to the vicar this notable confession: "Well, sir, I do think, when I come to look back and to consider what lives we used to live—drunk all night and idle abed all day, cursing, swearing, fighting, gambling, lying and always prepared to shoot the gauger—I do really believe, sir, we surely was in sln!"—London Express.
Her Turn Had Come.
After two years he proposed to her, and she accepted him.
"I'm so happy and glad," she sighed.
"Why, dearest?" he asked. "Because I'm to be your husband?"
"Oh, it isn't altogether that," she answered. "But now I can have the laugh on all our relatives who have been saying that you'd never propose."
—Detroit Free Press.
Cherry Wood.
Cherry is the wood most used as a backing for the metal plates from which illustrations are printed in magazines and periodicals. It is chosen above all others because it holds its shape, does not warp or twist, works smoothly and does not split.
Not to Be Thought Of.
Certainly some might be foolish enough to call Athens. Thermopylae and Marathon the most famous Greece spots in history, but it would be dangerous.—Judge.
Of Course Not.
"That's enough. You only want to kiss a peachy cheek. You don't want to bite it."—Louisville Courier-Journal.
Laudable.
"What is your idea in reorganizing the choir?"
"I want to put it on a sound basis."-- Boston Transcript.
