PEKA PLAINDEALER PASSING OF THE CALAMITY HOWLERS! The Results of the Election Tuesday Means That Stubbs, Bristow and Dolley are Things of the Past-Kansas is Glad. The people of Kansas should feel proud of what took place Tuesday even if Stubbs did escape by a mere scratch. We can rest assured that his wailing and howling will soon be a thing of the past. The business man, the corporation man, the laboring man, President Ripley and the Santa Fe Railway Co., can have some peace even if they are devoid of political sense. The result Tuesday means the winding up of the career of Joe Bristow, Stubbs and several of the lesser disturbers of business interests. State Chairman Henderson Martin and Secretary W. H. Peperell are to be congratulated upon the wise, manly and conservative sight they made for Senator Hodges. They had no money and only a few newspapers to espouse their cause or Mr. Hodges would have been elected. Mr. Hodges can justly feel proud of the sight he made. Had he spoke in Shawnee county two weeks previous his majority would have reached 1,500. He is one of the most polished and convincing talkers that ever mounted a rostrum. He is polished, educated and refined and could represent Kansas anywhere and in a manner that no one would feel ashamed—a thing that cannot be said of the present Governor. We are exceedingly thankful that Joe Dolley was defeated for the legislature. He too was a howling farce—an abstract of mistakes, a political accident. We won't be asked out of the the speaker's office at the next session should we ask that a few places be given the colored people during the session. "Dolley and the bar won't be thar" to molest us. We are greatful to the colored voters for taking a stand against a man who is under suspicion of being implicated in a lynching. Stubbs is one of the wisest machine men Kansas ever had. He keeps a club over all of his appointees who fear him as a woman does a mouse. The remainder of the Republican ticket was elected by the usual majority. They are men of honor and tried, true Republicans. Teddy lost at every place he spoke. President Taft must feel good over the political downfall of Roosevelt who coused all the disturbance in the party. We don't want calamity howlers in the party. Mme Anita Patli Brown, now travelling with her own accompanist, will give a recital for Rev Craw on Monday night, Nov. 21. She is a coloratura soprano, a student from the Chicago Conservatory of Music, and comes with the very best recommendations. She will be assisted by local talent. We have had a small foundation for pastor for the past ten years, but now we have one weighing about 300 pounds. The church is well pleased with him. An hour was spent: in doing needle work and the remaining time was given to discussion along charitable lines. Master William Reeves, son of Mr and Mrs. Leche Reeves, died at his home, 1500 Quincy street, at the age of seven years and nine months. It has more jobbing houses than Kansas City and vies with St Louis. Found the colored people there, the rank and file, about as usual, moving no faster but, if anything, a little slower. The Drs. seem to be doing fine. Drs. Crossland, Carlou and Ricketts are the leading physicians of the town. Dr McAlister, the dentist is doing well. J H Ramsey the undertaker, has been in business five years and doing fine. Dr. C. S. Wheatly the chiropodist and mantourist, has the cream of the town as his customers and a fine office in the heart of the town. L. E. Perry is one of the most successful second men in the West. He manufactures mattresses; and in fact is a thorough business man. We wish we had more like him in the West. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Walker own one of the finest confectionery, bakery, ice cream and soda water businesses in the West, in their own building, a two story brick. Mr. Walker is one of the best colored men in St. Joseph. Prof. Harry Robinson has a beautiful park, with modern conveniences, moving pictures and vaudeville. He also manufactures hair braids, wigs, puffs, and other hair goods. M D Lowry, the tailor, is a success. His business has grown to more than he can do. Cleaning and dyeing is his principal strength. A. D. Hartz is with the United States Savings Bank, and writes fire insurancees. We are proud to note a man of the race in that line.
